Mackenzie Blackwood spent nearly an hour talking about his development as a young goaltender in the National Hockey League, including some specific technical details reserved for the goalie-savvy InGoal Premium audience. He didn't start playing goal until he was 12 (!) and yet he understands himself, his game and how to play as a professional well beyond his years. And hang on till the end for Woody's "one more question" which details an inside story of why Blackwood played so much of his early NHL career in borrowed gloves...

Chris Driedger was in the midst of a breakthrough season when the NHL shut its doors two months ago, establishing himself as an everyday option by posting a .938 save percentage for the Florida Panthers more than eight seasons after being drafted by the Ottawa Senators. For Driedger, who turns 26 this month, it hasn’t always been an easy path from third-round pick to NHL regular but the journey, which included spending time in the ECHL as recently as two seasons ago, has provided the Winnipeg-born goaltender with a lot of valuable lessons and insights into what it really takes to make it to the world’s best league. From how to approach practice, even when they’re running drills set up for the goalie to fail, to managing his mindset before and during games and what he learned from Roberto Luongo and is still learning from Sergei Bobrovsky, as well as a detailed breakdown of his game-day routine right up to how he maintains focus through the national anthems, Driedger spent close to an hour sharing those lessons with InGoal.

This one may be our longest feature to date as David Hutchison sits down to talk sport science and goaltending with InGoal Member, and New Jersey Devils Director of Performance Science & Reconditioning Coach, Devan McConnell. We talk about what makes goaltenders different from a physiology and biomechanics perspective, injury prevention, efficient training and recovery in the midst of challenging schedules – in the NHL or minor hockey – our specific needs in training and in practice and much more. McConnell is not just an NHL Sport Science Director who works with the likes of MacKenzie Blackwood and Cory Schneider, he is a goaltender himself who played and coached at the college level. This interview is packed with knowledge that will help goaltenders and coaches at all levels.

It seems like almost every week we say to ourselves – that’s one of the best interviews so far! And we mean it. So here we go again – another fantastic interview we enjoyed so much and we hope that you will as well. In fact, this time we’re changing things up a bit – with two guests in one interview as we sit down with goalie and goalie-coach, an opportunity to explore their working relationship and get insight from each of them about the other. Jeremy Swayman is this year’s winner of the Mike Richter Award as the top goaltender in NCAA hockey, freshly signed to an entry-level deal with the Boston Bruins. As the number one goaltender for the Maine Black Bears, Swayman played in all 34 of the Bears games this year registering a 0.939 save percentage and a 2.07 GAA with 3 shutouts. His coach, Alfie Michaud was a Black Bear himself in the late 90s before going on to a 15-year pro career that began with the Vancouver Canucks and concluded with stints in three European leagues. Together they talk to us about the NCAA and give us insights into the day to day training and development in one of the top programs in the country, his development work now as the NHL season is on pause, insights into his technical work, how they approach games including their different personalities as goaltenders. The interview covers close to an hour and we would have loved to see it go longer.

In this episode we sit down with Montreal's Charlie Lindgren who spoke with us about a wide range of topics from his development as a youngster, his competitive streak — he wouldn't let his younger brother Ryan, now a New York Ranger, shoot on him until he was 19 — moving from the NCAA to the NHL, working with Carey Price and much more. Plus, the boys make their Vezina picks with dinner in Vegas (one day...) on the line.

In this episode we sit down with Detroit's Jonathan Bernier. The former 11th overall selection in the Entry Draft began his career with early success, winning a Stanley Cup in Los Angeles and after stops in Anaheim, Colorado and Toronto, this year he's fashioned a team-MVP caliber season. Bernier talks with us about development, his cues for success on the ice and how he evaluates his game off the ice. It's a wide-ranging discussion that is sure to have something for goaltenders of all ages.

This week we are joined by former NHL goaltender Mathieu Garon, currently working with the Tampa Bay Lightning in a community development role. We also welcome from Lugano of the Swiss League, goaltending coach Michael Lawrence who is just recovered from the Covid-19. He shares. what it was like playing with no crowd in the early stages of the European response to the pandemic, as well as his work with Columbus Blue Jacket Elvis Merzļikins.

Los Angeles King Cal Petersen is our feature guest this week as he talks development, career, his NCAA experience and becoming an NHL regular.

This week we talk Russian Goaltending with Semyon Varlamov as well as coach Oleg Romashko who was in Vancouver working with Canucks Goaltending Coach Ian Clark.

Our guest in Episode 61 is Dusty Imoo, who finished his season coaching in the KHL on a lengthy road trip as his team, Kunlun Red Star is based in China, where COVID-19 first took hold. From that experience we also talk about his relationship with his goaltenders, his own need to practice with his team frequently to baiting shooters and learning to catch pucks.

we catch up with Bob Essensa to talk about everything from a playing career that started, as so many do, as the little brother that was forced into the net and ended with six NHL teams over 12 seasons before becoming the Boston Bruins goaltending coach in 2003. The man they call Goalie Bob shares insights as a goalie who played in the "fear factor" era, when shots really hurt, and through the evolution to equipment that not only better protected you, but also pads that actually rotated in the butterfly. He talks about staying current in an ever shifting coaching environment, and working with a future Hall of Fame goaltender like Tuukka Rask, including all the questions and criticisms he gets from other goaltending coaches in the summer about Rask's preference for "shin on post" on sharp-angle plays. The answer is revealing. In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we chat with Canada's Gold Medal winning goaltender from the World Junior Championships, Joel Hofer, just after his return to Canada. Hofer, who was also named the Tournament's top goaltender is a fascinating story; he didn't play AAA hockey until he was 16, was never drafted into major junior hockey, and had never before played for his country. In fact, when Canada brought their top junior netminders together this past summer for their Program of Excellence camp, Hofer was not on the list of invitations. As he always has, the 6'5" St. Louis Blues prospect kept working, producing a remarkable first half of the season with his WHL club, the Portland Winterhawks, and earned an invitation to the Canadian Team's final camp before the World Championships. He didn't start Canada's first game but once he got the net he didn't let go. His calm, steadying influence was a major reason for the Canadian victory. For our gear segment sponsored by the Hockey Shop we wanted to talk to an NHL equipment manager to give you some insights into the gear in the NHL locker rooms and the role the equipment manager plays in keeping his goaltenders on top of their game. We found one who does all of that, and a whole lot more. A former pro himself, Carolina's Jorge Alves frequently takes the net in practice himself to give the Hurricanes' starters much-needed rest and it's a role that Carolina players have told us over the years is an important one for the club. In fact, Alaves was even pressed into service as an EBUG (Emergency Backup Goaltender) and fate saw him get into the game and he now sports an NHL career that lasted a record 7.6 seconds.​

In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we're joined by the man we call the Godfather of Swedish Goaltending, Thomas Magnusson, @magnussonth, who is the Head of Goaltending for the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. While goaltending coaching is ubiquitous in top teams now, he was the first in the Swedish Pro leagues, even pre-dating Francois Allaire in the NHL. Magnusson led the charge as Sweden remade their program with the key strategy of coaching the coaches and continues down this path with 250 certified coaches now and a regular program of professional development to support them. We also spoke at length about recent research in Sweden into hip and groin injuries in goaltending and some potential practice and equipment changes to help mitigate this growing problem in goaltenders.
