Ep 54Episode 54 Justin Goldman - Lift the Mask
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we took the opportunity on Bell Let's Talk Day to chat with Justin Goldman, founder of The Goalie Guild, about his Lift the Mask program designed to help goaltenders improve their mental health. It's a subject our audience is familiar with based on past episodes with guests like Clint Malarchuk and Corey Hirsch sharing their battles with mental health, and one with strong ties to the goaltending world, from Robin Lehner's well documented struggles with, and recovery from, addiction and mental health disorders, to Finnish goaltender Jonathan Iilahti sharing his struggles in an article on InGoal Magazine earlier this season. Goldman has some insightful thoughts on the blurry lines between mental health and mental performance that will benefit goaltenders, coaches and goalie parents of every age, experience and level. In the gear segment presented by The Hockey Shop, Cam and Woody look at one of the most important pieces of equipment in every goalie's bag: the goalie jock. And yes, there's a way to fit it properly, which is why we only buy from the goalie staff at The Hockey Shop: they play the position, love the position and know how to help you find the right gear to keep you performing well -- and in this case playing safe.

Ep 53Episode 53 David Leggio
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we chat with longtime pro goaltender and coach David Leggio. He’s won a championship with Clarkson University where he earned the leagues top goalie award, he’s been an American League starter. He twice represented his country at the World Championships and at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. He won a Finnish league championship with TPS and played 4 years in the German League where he also won a Championship with Red Bull Munich...oh, and you might know him because two leagues changed their rules when he knocked his net over, preferring to face a penalty shot than a 2-on-0, even signaling for the penalty shot himself. We love that bold creativity, but we loved this interview even more for everything else he brings to the conversation. Leggio has worked with so many great coaches and goalie-partners over the years as he built his own impressive pro resume, that he has insights as a goaltender that make for fascinating conversation. We talk technical insights, deploying tandems, dealing with adversity, including a very significant concussion, and more. We're already looking forward to our next conversation with David Leggio. In the gear segment presented by the Hockey Shop, Cam and Woody get back together to look at Bauer's 2S line, both Pro and other price points as they are now on sale with some fantastic deals! You can see all the deals they discussed right here at TheHockeyshop.com/goal and you can check out InGoal's review of the 2S Pro right here at InGoalMag.com

Ep 52Episode 52 Robin Lehner
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down in the Chicago Blackhawks locker room with Robin Lehner to talk about being unpredictable to shooters, his success behind two very different teams and of course his personal journey. His open and honest manner shines through in this interview and we can hear why last year's Masterton Trophy Winner has been such an inspiration to others. We switch things up a bit again in our gear segment as we are joined by Kane van Gate. He's a YouTube beer-leaguer on a continuing journey to (he hopes) realize his NHL dream. He is (seriously) a Bauer brand ambassador and has been a guest at The Hockey Shop's TendyFest. That visit to Vancouver spawned another dream KVG38 is about to realize - that of documentary filmmaker. His Hockey Journey will premiere in St. Louis on January 27th and all of as in the InGoal Offices are excited to see what he has up his oversized goalie-sleeves - no doubt it will be as entertaining as his YouTube series The BHL Life.

Ep 51Episode 51 Joel Hofer and Jorge Alves
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we chat with Canada's Gold Medal winning goaltender from the World Junior Championships, Joel Hofer, just after his return to Canada. Hofer, who was also named the Tournament's top goaltender is a fascinating story; he didn't play AAA hockey until he was 16, was never drafted into major junior hockey, and had never before played for his country. In fact, when Canada brought their top junior netminders together this past summer for their Program of Excellence camp, Hofer was not on the list of invitations. As he always has, the 6'5" St. Louis Blues prospect kept working, producing a remarkable first half of the season with his WHL club, the Portland Winterhawks, and earned an invitation to the Canadian Team's final camp before the World Championships. He didn't start Canada's first game but once he got the net he didn't let go. His calm, steadying influence was a major reason for the Canadian victory. For our gear segment sponsored by the Hockey Shop we wanted to talk to an NHL equipment manager to give you some insights into the gear in the NHL locker rooms and the role the equipment manager plays in keeping his goaltenders on top of their game. We found one who does all of that, and a whole lot more. A former pro himself, Carolina's Jorge Alves frequently takes the net in practice himself to give the Hurricanes' starters much-needed rest and it's a role that Carolina players have told us over the years is an important one for the club. In fact, Alaves was even pressed into service as an EBUG (Emergency Backup Goaltender) and fate saw him get into the game and he now sports an NHL career that lasted a record 7.6 seconds.
Ep 50Episode 50 Marc Denis
In this episode presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we talk with NHL Goaltender turned Broadcaster Marc Denis - world junior Champion who in one season played 77 games (!) for the Columbus Blue Jackets - quite the contrast to today where we place so much importance on tandems. Kevin also chats with Carey Price in the locker room on a variety of topics from practice habits, playing on instinct in games and his mental approach. Cam brings us a goalie-parent focused edition of Questions for Cam - but there's still some nuggets in there for goaltenders of all ages as well.
Ep 49Episode 49 Thomas Magnusson & the Goalie Gear Nerd
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we're joined by the man we call the Godfather of Swedish Goaltending, Thomas Magnusson, @magnussonth, who is the Head of Goaltending for the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. While goaltending coaching is ubiquitous in top teams now, he was the first in the Swedish Pro leagues, even pre-dating Francois Allaire in the NHL. Magnusson led the charge as Sweden remade their program with the key strategy of coaching the coaches and continues down this path with 250 certified coaches now and a regular program of professional development to support them. We also spoke at length about recent research in Sweden into hip and groin injuries in goaltending and some potential practice and equipment changes to help mitigate this growing problem in goaltenders. For our gear segment, we bring you another first, as the man known as The Goalie Gear Nerd on social media @GoalieGearNerd - Mr. Nerd to us - stopped in for a chat about trends in goalie gear this year and next. He's got one of the widest networks in the game and we couldn't think of anyone who would be better to close out 2019 with to talk gear.
Ep 48Episode 48 Noora Räty and Frederik Andersen
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we have a lengthy interview with one of the finest women's goaltenders in the world - Noora Räty of Finland, now playing professionally for Kunlun Red Star in China. Her National Team career began at 15, the Olympics at 16, she has an remarkable NCAA record, including an undefeated senior season with a .956 save %, and has been playing for Kunlun since 2017. Like all the pros we meet, Räty shares her story of beginning in net and her development into a pro. She also gives us her thoughts on the challenges facing the women's professional game today. There's no Uber in Vancouver but Kevin Woodley is quickly becoming the "Uber for Goalies" as we're beginning to think he chauffeurs every NHL pro in town around in his car. This week Freddie Andersen hopped in with Woody and had a chat that we'll all enjoy. There's lots more from the goalie world including small cameos from Tim Thomas and Carey Price, talk of lacrosse goals, and a scary scene in the Ontario Hockey League. For our gear segment, our Ask Cam was so popular last week that it returns, rebranded with a slightly less awkward name, thanks to InGoal listener Alan Nosworthy, as Questions for Cam. They talk about helmets - do you really have to buy the top of the line? are there options? Fitting gloves as minor hockey goalies grow - or if you're a tiny-handed adult like Hutch - and things get a bit personal as one reader asks how many cups Cam wears on the ice! You might be surprised to hear how many....

Ep 47Episode 47 Carter Hutton and Ask Cam
In Episode 47 of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports Kevin takes Carter Hutton of the Buffalo Sabres for a ride through the streets of Vancouver to talk about his career, his gear, the mental side of the game and more. For our gear segment, Kevin lets you know what it's like to call the Shop for advice when he debuts the new segment "Ask Cam" where Kevin brings our listeners' questions (and a new "jingle") to Cam. Boot straps, stick sizing, securing your knee pads - the experts at the Shop can help you, just as Cam did this week!
Ep 46Episode 46 Michael Garteig
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with Michael Garteig, who went from Canucks prospect out of college, to winning an ECHL Kelly Cup Championship with the Toronto Maple Leafs affiliate last season, to tearing it up with Tappara in Liiga, Finland’s top professional league, this season. Garteig shared plenty of great stories about his transition to playing in Finland, some of the unique differences in the Finnish approach working with Tappara’s goaltending coach Aki Näykki, who is a long-time coach and friend of Nashville Predators star Pekka Rinne (and we hope will forgive us for butchering the pronunciation of his name throughout), as well his college career with Quinnipiac University, the decision to sign with his home province Canucks when it ended, and why it’s important to pack more than a duffle bag when you get called up to the NHL on short notice. In the gear segment, we connect with Cam at the Hockey Shop again for some Christmas gift ideas for the hard-to-please goalie on your list — December just started, but make sure you listen to this segment so you don’t miss any of Cam’s suggestions, or their shipping deadlines in order to get your gear in time to be wrapped and under the tree on Christmas.

Ep 45Episode 45 Mackenzie Skapski
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with recently retired former New York Rangers goaltender Mackenzie Skapski, who shares some fascinating stories from a career that ended with a .978 save percentage in the NHL and some compelling lessons on how hard it can be to truly understand your own game. Skapski is continuing to work with goalies through his new company, Assertion Goaltending, founded along with Rangers development coach Jeff Malcolm, and shares some insightful tips on the lessons he learned late in his career about identifying and sticking to your foundation as a goaltender. Their new program, which contains a strong video analysis component and principles from Rangers goaltending guru Benoit Allaire, hopes to change that side of the goaltending development model so other goalies don’t have to wait until the end of their career to really understand what makes them good and how to repeat it. In the gear segment, we connect with Cam at the Hockey Shop again or a preview of their massive Black Friday Sale, which is kind of like a floater from the point: No goalie will want to miss these deals.

Ep 44Episode 44: Steve Valiquette
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with former NHL goaltender and current New York Rangers TV analyst Steven Valiquette, who is also the CEO of Clear Sight Analytics, a company that is changing how we measure shot quality in the NHL, including playing an active role in helping the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup. Our conversation with Valiquette is long and fascinating, and touches on everything from almost having his career end in junior because of a house party, to figuring out things on his own as a young pro without any goalie coaching help, to the impact of, and specific lessons from, current Anaheim Ducks goaltending coach Sudarshan Maharaj and New York Rangers goalie coaching legend Benoit Allaire. Valiquette talks about playing with, and now analyzing Rangers star Henrik Lundqvist, which leads us into a fascinating conversation about properly measuring goalie performance with Clear Sight Analytics, and a few surprises as he shares some of their proprietary numbers so far this season, and how coaches can use that data to help their goaltenders, or in the case of the Capitals, exploit others by changing how they attack. In the gear segment, we give Cam at the Hockey Shop the week off as he prepares the store for a massive Black Friday Sale (more specific details on what’s available next week), and use the time to catch up instead with Adam Micheletti, vice president of hockey for Vizual Edge, the web-based vision training program that Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart told us about using regularly in Episode 39.

Ep 43Episode 43 Pekka Rinne and Chris Mason
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Pekka Rinne and his former Nashville Predators playing partner Chris Mason, who is back with the team as a broadcaster and still as entertaining and passionate about puck stopping as he was during an 18-year pro career that included 317 NHL games, gold and silver medals with Canada at the World Championships, a championship in Norway, and some of the best gear and mask art the NHL has ever seen. Our conversation with the two Predators icons includes everything from how Pesapola (Finnish baseball) helped forge an incredible glove hand for the late-blooming Rinne, the role that famous goalie whisperer Mitch Korn played in the development path of both guys, how Mason read shots off the blades of opposing forwards, and lots more insights every goalie will appreciate and relate to. In the gear segment, we catch up with Cam back at the Hockey Shop to talk about Goalie Bloc, small rubber band with a thick protective layer that wraps around your stick to help protect the index finger from shots that ride up the paddle. It’s a relatively new product that was only recently approved for use in NHL games, and seems like a no-brainer in terms of mitigating injuries risk, especially in practice.

Ep 42Episode 42 Andrew Raycroft, Jake Allen and CCM Director of Innovation Adam Gans
In Episode 42 of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with Calder Trophy winning goaltender Andrew Raycroft. From the Boston Bruins to the Toronto Maple Leafs, being traded for Tuukka Rask to working with him now as part of the broadcast team at NESN, Raycroft shared some great insights on everything from breaking into the NHL at a young age, to playing with his boyhood idol Felix Potvin, to how a year with Ian Clark and the Vancouver Canucks revitalized his career — but not how you might think. Speaking of Rask, we also caught up with Jake Allen of the St. Louis Blues, who shared a previously untold story about how his impersonation of the Bruins No.1 was used to help win the Stanley Cup. In the gear segment, we give Cam a break at the Hockey Shop and instead check in with Adam Gans, the director of innovation at CCM, and goaltender and a mechanical engineer with composites who has more than been specializing in sticks for 20 years, for a fascinating discussion about the recent evolution of composite goaltending sticks, and where they are headed next.

Ep 41Episode 41 Andy Moog and Brian's Optik 2
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we sit down with three-time Stanley Cup champion Andy Moog. He won his cups with the legendary Oiler's teams of the 80s, took the Bruins to the Finals and shared a Jennings in Boston as well. In between he...well, see for yourself how he was forced to suit up for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. We've known that Andy was that guy who wore the iTech bubble but it was still incredible to hear it from Moog himself exactly what made it happen. Moog was a fascinating person to chat with about the modern game, his approach to coaching goaltenders at the Okanagan Hockey Academy and with the WHL Portland Winterhawks and how many of the assets he brought to his own style of goaltending are becoming increasingly important today. This episode is released the day before Brian's new Optik 2 is released at retail. Cam and Woody look at the features and changes in the new gear. Once you've had a listen, head over to our review of the Optik 2 - we've been testing it for several weeks now and as you might expect, we were impressed.

Ep 40Episode 40 Chris Osgood and Bauer World
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we sit down with three-time Stanley Cup champion Chris Osgood for a lengthy chat that includes insights on everything from scoring a goal, to playing for Scotty Bowman and Kenny Holland, to with Dominik Hasek, fighting Patrick Roy, and why he was the last goalie to wear the helmet and cage combo. You won't believe the answer to that last one, and you won't want to miss his thoughts on being asked by Mike Babcock to hold a clipboard and scout face-offs as the backup late in his career with the Red Wings. Now a Detroit broadcaster and youth coach, it says here Osgood should have been in the Hall of Fame long before now for a career that includes 401 NHL wins, but for now we'll happily settle for this Hall of Fame interview with him. We take a break from the Hockey Shop for the gear segment this week, but not from Cam, who instead grabs Bauer's Spencer Freer to take us behind the scenes from Bauer World at a secret location in Miami, an annual gathering of top retailers that has become known as the Stark Expo of the goalie world.

Ep 39Episode 39 Carter Hart
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we sit down with Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart for a lengthy chat that includes several never-before-heard stories, anecdotes and tips from the impressive 21-year-old puck stopper. From changing his stretching routine, to being cut from his local AAA team at age 15 despite almost making the WHL shortly before, Hart opens up about the mental tools he has developed with help from his Sports Psychologist John Stevenson, sharing some of the drills that helped him make the jump from Jr to the AHL to the NHL last season, and some of the tips and programs he still uses today. It's hard not to be impressed with Hart's approach, and willingness to share several tips we know goalies and goalie parents will be able to use themselves this season. Back at the Hockey Shop with Cam for the gear segment, we look at three options to help keep your equipment stink- and bacteria-free, and give you the chance to save 20% when you stock up on sports spray using the #InGoal20 code at TheHockeyShop.com The boys also break down their answers to an informal poll that you are invited to join in on - so hop on over to InGoalMag.com to share your thoughts.

The two founders bring advice for goaltenders on the roe of a player agent and when and how to select one, as well as how to prepare physically to perform at your best. And for young goaltenders it's more than just "play lots of other sports" but in an answer typical of Francilia, it's well thought, deliberate, and fun. McElhinney shares so many memories and great lessons from a career that was launched with a love for the equipment, started in the NHL with an eye towards taking over for Miikka Kiprusoff in Calgary, almost ended with a pelvis fractured by what should have been routine crease movement with the Arizona Coyotes, and was reborn during four seasons with Sergei Bobrovsky, Ian Clark and the Columbus Blue Jackets. He talks candidly about his exit from the Toronto Maple Leafs last season — “The Toronto thing sucked,” he says, “It sucked." — a remarkable run to the Eastern Conference Final with the Carolina Hurricanes, why taking a surprise offer from Tampa Bay was an easy decision, and how his equipment, game and mindset have all evolved along the way. Also, we lead off with Cam from The Hockey Shop in our gear segment, looking at Warrior's new lineup of sticks before engaging in a discussion about the benefits of the new stick technology.

Ep 22InGoal Radio Podcast Episode 22: Spencer Knight, top-ranked goaltender for the 2019 draft
This week on InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we give you sneak peek at the future of goaltending with Spencer Knight, the consensus top-ranked goaltender for the NHL Draft this weekend in Vancouver. It’s a compelling conversation, with Knight talking about the importance of patience on his skates, his approach to wide-open practice drills against some of the best players his age on the US National Team Development Program (including projected No. 1 pick Jack Hughes), and how playing as a forward, both in hockey and for even longer in lacrosse, has helped him become a better goaltender and puck handler. There’s plenty of good advice for young goalies and parents alike, and after listening to the future Boston College goalie talk about the position for close to half an hour, it’s easy to understand why so many expect him to be selected in the first round on Friday. Plus, we recap the Stanley Cup run by impressive St. Louis Blues rookie Jordan Binnington (and explain why his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs would never have drafted the 6-foot-1 stopper), discuss some of the other trends that dominate the draft discussions about puck stoppers, and we check in with Cam at The Hockey Shop for a complete overview of the new Bauer Vapor 2X Pro chest protector.

Ep 21Episode 21 John Stevenson and options for your steel
This week InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, is one to pay close attention to. We all learn about gear and technique but if it’s true that the game is 80 or 90 percent mental then Dr. John Stevenson is someone you need to listen carefully to. He has guided Braden Holtby and Carter Hart since both were young. Stevenson started as a goaltending coach – right up to the NHL level – and transitioned into practice as a sports psychologist. In fact, when Holtby won the cup, after his family, Stevenson was the first person he thanked saying he wouldn’t have been there without him. Imagine what you could learn…. In the interview we talk about a workshop Stevenson is presenting across the country with another well-known goaltending mindset expert, Pete Fry (himself an NHL-drafted goaltender). The first sessions will be in Vancouver June 22/23.
