In that very candid feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Fucale shares the excitement and hard work that went into a standout junior career — two trips to the Memorial Cup, including one win, plus two trips to the World Juniors where he came away with a gold medal and shares the Canadian record for most wins at the tournament. He also openly shares his struggles, and who he turned to, as his pro career didn't match that early promise as quickly as he would have hoped. If you've ever struggled as a goaltender - and who hasn't? - this will be an interview you are sure to learn from. Now, with success on the international stage in three Spengler Cups for Canada and a passion to refine his craft that has always been with him, he looks forward to the upcoming season. Ep 95Episode 95 Collin Delia

Episode 94 of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports features more than an hour with the man Woody dubs "The Most Interesting Goalie in the World," Collin Delia of the Chicago Blackhawks. In that feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Delia, who looks to take on an increased role in Chicago this season with the departure of Corey Crawford, was a fascinating and open interview with a decidedly laid back feel that we all enjoyed. You'll learn a bit about his life as a new father, starting hockey as a roller hockey goalie in California, living, his Swiss coaching roots, and training in Chicago now and getting outside your comfort zone. You'll also hear about life inside the NHL bubble as a black ace where he had to take control of his own training - a good lesson for all goaltenders. Of course if you love gear, you'll enjoy all the chat about modifying his gear to dial it in and even fix it himself. While it doesn't come up in the interview, we wonder if perhaps that led to Delia and his partner starting the Portiere Leather Company. All that, plus another trip to The Hockey Shop for a fresh and fun video gear segment as Woody and Cam complete their Two Men in Chests mini-series looking at the Vaughn Velocity V9 Pro Carbon Senior Chest & Arm Protector, with some adjustability features we loved, plus added protection with that same Vaughn mobility goalies love.

Ep 86Episode 86 Connor Hellebuyck

Freshly minted Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck is our feature guest for Episode 86 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports. Our exclusive interview with the Winnipeg Jets star was one of the first he’s done since winning the Vezina, and it’s loaded with fascinating stories about his unique path from ignored high school hockey graduate, to the top of the NHL.Hellebuyck talks about dedicating himself to the position later than most after also playing out until he was 13, and the role a particular set of pads played in that decision to finally just become a goalie. He shares a story about going to stick-and-puck to run drills with a friend to prepare himself for a NAHL camp invite he drove 12 hours to attend, and how that led to a relationship that helped pave his way to pro. He shares insight on his evolution in college, from barely playing to winning the first Mike Richter Award as the top NCAA goalie in just his second season, and his initial hesitation to turn pro after that. He is candid about the changes in his game since joining the Jets, including some early stubbornness and specific examples of post play and hand positioning that he ultimately needed to alter. It’s a fascinating interview with one of the game’s best, and should serve as both an inspiration and a reminder to young goalies everywhere that where you’re at with hockey in your early teens doesn’t necessarily have to dictate where you end up. Cam goes over the innovative new pads and their revolutionary Stabilislide Knee, and shares feedback about fit, flex and feel, as well as some of the custom options he’d recommend to other goalies.

Ep 85Episode 85 Evgeni Nabokov

Episode 85 of the InGoal Radio Podcast kicks off with some very exciting news as we welcome back our presenting sponsor, The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, and catch up with good friend Cam Matwiv for the first of what will again be weekly visits to their slice of goalie heaven and a long list of new products we'll be reviewing in-depth, starting this week with CCM AXIS pads. Our feature guest this week is perfectly timed, as we welcome 14-year NHL veteran Evgeni Nabokov to the show just as Russian goaltenders set an NHL record with three of the four starters in the Conference Finals, and now two in the Stanley Cup Final after Anton Khudobin knocked off the only non-Russian No.1, Vegas starter Robin Lehner. Speaking of Khudobin, he once told us he didn't get formal goalie training until his teens, and it was none other than fellow Kazahkstan-born goalie Nabokov, so who better to talk to about the evolution of the position back in Russia? Nabokov, who is now the San Jose Sharks goaltending coach after a 14-year career spent largely with the Sharks, shares stories about how he came to the position through his father, a long-time pro, the strengths of the Russian system then and now, his path to the NHL, the influence of American coaching icon Warren Strelow, and his own philosophy about the best way to develop goalies. It's a fun half-our conversation loaded with take aways for goalies, goalie coaches and goalies parents alike.

Ep 77Episode 77 Kim St Pierre

Recently named to the 2020 class of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Kim St. Pierre will be the first female goaltender inducted into the Hall. St. Pierre was our guest this week on the InGoal Radio Podcast, and today we bring that interview to our Premium Members ahead of its public release on the podcast. This interview has so many great takeaways for goaltenders; it will have something for everyone. It was without a doubt one of our favorites — and not just because she managed to “one more question” our Kevin Woodley! We’re glad she did because it was to make another important point in an interview filled with them. With a bit of everything from her incredible Hall of Fame career, there are lessons for goaltenders at all levels whether just starting out or playing, as St. Pierre did, at the highest levels of the game. Kim’s thoughts on mindset and how she learned to deal with the pressure of International Play resonate not just for elite goaltenders but are also framed for young goaltenders just starting out. Her approach to the game, preparation, and practice hold lessons for all of us. St. Pierre earned 3 Olympic Gold Medals, 5 World Championship gold and as a member of Team Canada set records with 15 shutouts and a remarkable .840 goals against average. We hope that you enjoy this interview as much as we did — and we look forward to the next opportunity to bring this Hall of Fame goaltender to the InGoal audience.

Ep 76Episode 76 Jean-Philippe Lamoureux of Red Bull Salzburg

In the latest episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast we catch up with Jean-Philippe Lamoureux as he prepared to head back to Austria with his young family for another season Red Bull Salzburg and his 10th season playing in Austria’s top professional league, the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, where he is the reigning MVP after posting an eye-popping .946 save percentage last season. Lamoureux had immediate success in the ECHL and AHL after graduating from a standout career at the University of North Dakota in 2007-08, but left for Europe after just three seasons in North America and never looked back. The only thing better than the story about why he left, which involves his boyhood idol Ed Belfour relaying how an NHL GM who signed him would probably never give him a chance simply because he is 5-foot-10, is the journey that has followed and experiences that helped him get keep getting better. The oldest of six siblings in a hockey family that includes US Olympic stars and gold-medal winning twin sisters Jocelyne and Monique, Lamoureux shares some of his lessons along the way, including early experiences with current Canucks goalie coach Ian Clark (“If he’s gonna carve me, i’ll give him the knife”), how early lessons on positioning and the recent emergence of box control have helped him thrive as a smaller goalie, the importance of visualization and flow state to his mental preparations, and a lot more. Lamoureux also touches on the goalie-themed children’s book his wife Kellie wrote (and a defensemen-themed follow up), and why he gives up half of his short offseason back home in the United States to coach other young goalies through private lessons and camps at JPL Goaltending, including an annual stop in Vegas. Lamoureux may not be the biggest goalie or a name everyone knows, but this interview is loaded with lessons that every goalie can benefit from.

Ep 75Episode 75 Oilers Goaltending Coach Dustin Schwartz

Goaltending Coach Dustin Schwartz caught up with Kevin Woodley to talk about development, with a particular focus on approaches he has taken during the NHL pause running virtual development camps and professional development, including the recent WHL/Hockey Canada goaltending symposium that InGoal presented. They dove into the importance of a technical foundation for young goaltenders and three key elements: tracking, movement and positioning. While we hear about tracking now all the time, Schwartz explains how it is so much more than watching the puck. He notes that it is a key element in your mobility and indeed all aspects of the position — not just the save execution. Schwartz, a WHL and USports goaltender himself, is also a trained teacher. He touches on how that is inseparable from his coaching and his approach of working with each goaltender as an individual - whether working with someone from his own vintage in Mike Smith with the Oilers or with youngsters much as he did when he began working with Carter Hart as a 12-year old.

He talked about important lessons he learned about managing his game as a backup sometimes caught between being target practice for teammates and needing to stay sharp himself, including for that crucial First Round relief appearance that helped Chicago win the Cup in 2015; how he learned that there is such a thing as studying too much video of yourself; his early inspirations and first set of pads and ensuing gear obsession, including how he came to have a glove model linked to his name; and the grassroots origin story of why he will never again wear anything other than pads and gloves from Brian’s Custom Sports.

Ep 58Episode 58 Bob Essensa, Trade Deadline and PadSkinz

we catch up with Bob Essensa to talk about everything from a playing career that started, as so many do, as the little brother that was forced into the net and ended with six NHL teams over 12 seasons before becoming the Boston Bruins goaltending coach in 2003. The man they call Goalie Bob shares insights as a goalie who played in the "fear factor" era, when shots really hurt, and through the evolution to equipment that not only better protected you, but also pads that actually rotated in the butterfly. He talks about staying current in an ever shifting coaching environment, and working with a future Hall of Fame goaltender like Tuukka Rask, including all the questions and criticisms he gets from other goaltending coaches in the summer about Rask's preference for "shin on post" on sharp-angle plays. The answer is revealing. Speaking of trades, Dad, Woody and Daren discuss the moves that happened -- and maybe more pointedly, some of the ones that didn't -- ahead of this week's deadline, as well as the EBUG heroics of David Ayres for the Carolina Hurricanes in Toronto over the weekend, and what it might mean for how the NHL handles similar situations in the future.
