Ep 137137 Leaders; Things to Consider Before your Terminate a position

Ian discusses his thoughts on leadership, culture and employee satisfaction. Your homework was. Take a look at your rule book, take a red pen and get rid of those petty rules. Take your team out individually for a walk in fresh air and be genuinely interested in them and how they are feeling. Take a sledgehammer and smash that pool table if its just a prop. Take a look at yourself, what do you think employees say about you when you aren't in the room. Take your finger off the trigger and try to understand if there is any way to salvage the position or redploy them elsewhere. Training is the easy bit, finding a Rockstar is the hard work. Ep 128128 Marathon Woman Kathrine Switzer | Be Fearless

E

An iconic athlete, author, Emmy-award winning broadcaster and advocate for sports and social causes, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially register and run the Boston Marathon in 1967. She was attacked in the race by an angry official who tried to rip off her bib number (#261) and throw her out of the race because she was a woman. She finished the 26.2 mile distance anyway and went on win the 1974 New York City Marathon and to champion women in the sport globally, most notably leading the drive to make the women's marathon an official Olympic event in 1984. Now, 58% of all runners in the USA are women. To celebrate this social revolution, and to support another on active aging, Switzer ran the Boston Marathon again, at age 70, on the 50th anniversary of her iconic run, finishing only 24 minutes slower than she did when she was 20. This run launched her non-profit '261 Fearless' --named after that famous bib number--which empowers women globally though running. She has been honored widely for her achievements including being inducted into the USA National Women's Hall of Fame which recognized her for creating positive social change throughout her storied career. Ep 122122 The Business of Giving

Danny Mitchell has worked in the third sector as a fundraiser for over 14 years working for both national and large regional charities across most income streams. Danny decided to use his experience to help smaller charities to evolve as they all struggle in a very competitive marketplace. He also realised that there was a gap in the market to work with companies around their Corporate Responsibility to help them to make a bigger difference without detracting them from their day to day business. It starts with getting the correct fit for a charity partnership which many do not have. Danny discusses his biggest event this year, the World Record Firewalk which is on 30th April at Newcastle Falcons. Danny created this event to allow any charity to buy places and raise funds without the stress of organising it from scratch. It is already the largest in the UK and we are hoping that enough people sign up to make it a World Record. Ian & Danny discuss; Challenges faced to charitable organisations The differences between large and small charities Transparency of where your donation goes Inspirational Supporters and Volunteers What can we do? Ep 117117 One Golden Nugget

Steve has promoted Britain's biggest raves, written hit songs and owned a record label that sold millions of albums. "I've also fallen on my arse and had to clean toilets and sweep floors to keep my dream alive. It feels like a real-life game of Snakes and Ladders – I've pushed my way into shows like The X Factor and managed hit artists. I've travelled on Concorde, I've run marathons and cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats. I've been in business with Duncan Bannatyne, and I've stopped being in business with Duncan Bannatyne! And now I'm in the digital business. But for all the many high points I've also experienced more temporary failure than is good for one person. There have been many, many periods in which I have made a complete hash of things when I've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and flopped on the final furlong. I've tripped on the finish line so often I've questioned my own sanity. If there was a lesson to be learned I've lived it, studied it, absorbed it, taken it on board and then ignored it many times over – even when I think I've understood it I've had to go through it again a few times to really know what it means. And that is a great life lesson, right there – the situation that slaps you will keep repeating until you learn the lesson. If there's one thing I have realised over the years it is that with every challenging life situation there is always the seed of opportunity and the hope of brilliance within it. You just have to look for it and be open, which can be difficult when the shit is hitting the fan, but if you are ever going to be successful you must embrace this skill with open arms. All the money from sales of these books is going to Young Minds, a brilliant charity that champions the well-being and mental health of young people." Check out industryangel.com

Ep 110110 How to win at Office Politics

E

Show notes http://industryangel.com/110-how-to-win-at-office-politics/ In any office there's always a hierarchy of power plays in how to get things done. Corporate veteran, Davide Cervellin, discusses with Ian Farrar how to play the game in his new book 'Office of Cards': 1. The corporate environment is like an episode of Game of Thrones – despite all the rules and red-tape it can be unpredictable so make sure you're prepared for every outcome 2. Networking is the key to success – personal connections help you get things done so build a network that can make you uniquely effective in your environment 3. Lose the whiners – if you choose to spend time with people who drag you down, they WILL drag you down. Seek people who think and act like you – be a radiator and not a drain 4. Play the Long Game – getting what you want or need from the business world takes planning, time and hard work. Make sure every move you make gets you one step closer to your goal, no matter how long it takes 5. Always have a positive attitude and stay cool – it instils calm and inspires loyalty. Anger and frustration lose you good friends, lead you to make mistakes and miss opportunities 6. Never argue – there is absolutely nothing to gain from making an enemy for the sake of winning an argument because that enemy could become a problem 7. Make no enemies – enemies kill ideas and careers. Even if you think that person is powerless you don't want them as an enemy, to survive and thrive you need to make sure that you #makenoenemies 8. Make people feel valued and important – they're far more likely to support you and respond to your suggestions 9. Learn how to listen to people – your attention should be on what they're saying when they're speaking, not your response. By listening to people and giving them a chance to speak you're gathering information you can use to tailor your idea to tie in with what they've got in mind 10. Be prepared – when you need something from someone make it as easy as possible for them to give it to you by doing the research and thinking needed before you ask anything Davide Cervellin was nominated as one of the Top 100 Influential People in Data Driven Businesses in 2018. He now works for travel website Booking.com.

Ep 108108 Hip Hop Entrepreneur Mugzy

Show notes http://industryangel.com/podcasts/ Born on the 22nd of January 1991 Mugzy had to fight through his adolescent years. Struggling with deep internal stress, he found inspiration in Eminem after his first encounter with Hip-Hop when he heard the song 'The Way I Am'. Mugzy felt that he could strongly relate to the lyrics in Eminem's songs & began to change his image to be a true representative of the Hip-Hop culture. As he developed his style and studied Hip-Hop, he found further inspiration from the legends: 2 Pac, Biggie, 50 Cent, DMX, & searched further into the roots of Hip-Hop to re-discover artists like Public Enemy, NWA & Nas. Drawing inspiration from the masters of Hip-Hop & armed with the knowledge earned through years of hardship, Mugzy's rap speaks of truth. A raw truth. A truth that will resound with teenagers that have had to endure self doubt & lack of confidence. Mugzy emerged from the shadow through Hip-Hop & found a way to express himself through his music by embracing the culture. Mugzy's style is a blend of grit, raw lyrics, aggression and abrasiveness. Mugzy will tell it how it is. Based north of Sydney, Mugzy will not shy away from any challenge to perform on any stage.

Ep 103103 Risk Taking & Decision Making in Poker, Business & Life

Caspar Berry gives the corporate world a greater understanding of their decision-making process. He shows people that all decisions are investment decisions. Investments of time, money, status, energy, comfort and security made with the intention of getting some kind of long term return. He tries to give people a better understanding of what "risk" is and how it is calculated in its essential form. This calibrated mathematical language allows people to understand, view and critically evaluate their decisions (and those of others) in a new way. He gives an understanding of the psychology of decision making and the cause of risk aversion among humans: i.e. why we are reluctant to embrace short term failures for long term gain. His final objective is to give participants an original and empowering method for using their own natural risk aversion as a motivational tool that can be used to achieve better long term results. And all of this is done using poker as a fun and engaging but completely relevant metaphor throughout. Ian & Caspar discuss; Early days on Byker Grove Becoming an award-winning director Film making The challenges of the film industry The early days in Las Vegas Discovering Poker and becoming a pro player The ROI of risk taking Being prepared to risk it Educated and non-educated risk taking The risks associated with sales leads Low risk & High risk projects If we do this Vs if we never do this Show Sponsors:- Far North Sales & Marketing Far North Sales & Marketing Consultancy are all-encompassing Business Development specialists, our aim is growth, your growth. Ep 94094 Performance under pressure

Show notes can be found here Knocked off his bicycle by a drunken container truck driver Laurie sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, a broken neck & an amputated right leg. At the time he was in the final year of a PhD in Exercise Science that focused on muscle metabolism and feedback to the brain, the same systems that were now severely disrupted. Laurie's subsequent research emerged from his personal struggles in regaining his own health and wellbeing. His focus changed to researching the brain-body link with a particular interest in optimising bodily stress reactivity (composure) when performing under pressure. Nervous system training entails using correct body posture, slow conscious movements and heightened awareness to undo the mental interference which prevents our bodily systems from working harmoniously. This enables us to tap into the 3 motivated behaviours programmed in our deeply subconscious reptilian brain. 'Motivated' behaviours, are naturally done without thinking PLUS they release energy into the body. When these do not occur naturally (mostly due to mental interference) the release of energy is inhibited and we feel tension in the body. www.calminthestormsa.com Ian and Laurie discuss; Laurie's Background The accident Free Rock Climbing Incident Discovering to relax the body and focus the mind Learning to walk again Trusting the body Achieving that state of mind Dopamine and the reward system Movement is generated from the spine Serotonin and thinking Stay relaxed, or cortisol and adrenaline kick in Serotonin shuts off the pain response Minimise the stress, the thinking and let the body heal itself Your body and your heart have to buy into it Experimenting with exercise and scanning the brain The effects of Dopamine using Ritalin The link with Dopamine and Obesity Health and Wellbeing Exercise The heart healthy 'Rest & Digest' system Resting heart rates Drew from the Pop-Up Gym shares his journey Drew's recovery in the US The lack of rehab/recovery facilities in the UK The Pop-Up Gym facilities Specialised training for wheelchair users Drew Graham - Pop-up Gym Drew, 33, was an athlete specializing in middle distance running, namely the 1500m. During his late teenage years and early twenties, Drew experienced a lot of success on the track, winning several northern championships and competing at the British Olympic trials following which Drew was awarded a sports scholarship to Adams State University in Colorado, USA where he studied human performance and physical education with a minor in business alongside competing in the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Whilst in America Drew won several NCAA titles at both 1500m and 1 mile and in both individual and team capacities. Following graduation Drew moved to Texas to become a running coach at Abeline Christian University where worked for several years, however this all came to an abrupt end whilst on a visit to see his girlfriend in Colorado when Drew was training for a triathlon and went for a swim in a nearby lake. Unfortunately, a sand bar had formed so as he dove into the lake he broke his neck and crushed his spinal cord, resulting in paralysis from the chest down. Following a year attending a of state of the art rehabilitation in the USA, Drew returned to the UK to find access and opportunities to use similar equipment severely lacking, with those that were available being extremely expensive. Thus the idea for Pop-Up Gym was born and after two years of fundraising and establishing Pop-Up Gym as a charity, it was finally opened on the 15th January 2018. We now have over 30 members using the gym regularly, and plan to take it out on the road around the North of England to help those who are unable to travel to Gateshead.
