And they’re changing their minds on several key issues. A new survey by Tallo asked nearly 10,000 high school and college students about their shifting perspectives on work and what’s important to them in their first full-time position. Compared to last year, young people are significantly more likely to prioritize financial stability, hone their networking skills and consider moving for the right offer. It might be easy to lump Millennials and Gen-Z together—but there are some distinct nuances. While Millennials may not entirely deserve their reputation as job-hoppers, their careers have taken many turns, and they also play a significant role in the gig economy. Tapping into the next generation of talent has become more strategic than ever. Here are six ways recruiters can pivot to get Gen-Z’s attention on the job front." Westover https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores the recent HBR video, "How to Stop Promoting Incompetent Men." See the video here: https://youtu.be/5XikR_aN0Hk. Video Overview: "Are there fewer women in management because we can’t discern between confidence and competence? The popular explanations range from women just aren’t capable of being leaders to women just don’t want to be leaders. According to author Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic however, the absence of women in leadership roles has less to do with women themselves and more to do with how we interpret leadership traits. Confidence – a trait more associated with men – is often misinterpreted as competence. As a result, charismatic, but incompetent men have fewer barriers to reach the top than women. Individuals in positions to promote and hire managers should think more critically about what seems like a leadership trait versus what is an actual leadership trait. They will find that arrogance and overconfidence – the characteristics that get men into management positions – are also the characteristics that cause poor performance." Ep 18S17E18 - HBR Minute - How to Stop Promoting Incompetent Men
In this "HBR Minute" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores the recent HBR video, "How to Stop Promoting Incompetent Men." See the video here: https://youtu.be/5XikR_aN0Hk. They will find that arrogance and overconfidence – the characteristics that get men into management positions – are also the characteristics that cause poor performance." Ep 15S17E15 - Fostering Synergy and Collaboration in a Hybrid Work Environment, with Elizabeth Knox
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Elizabeth Knox about fostering synergy and collaboration in a hybrid work environment. See the video here: https://youtu.be/-kLQiIelobs. Elizabeth Knox (https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabeth-knox-she-her-1916b24/) loves to work, but she also knows it’s not easy to work well. That’s why she started MatchPace: she knows how much companies, government agencies, and nonprofits contribute to the good that the world needs, but only if the people who work there are working well and living well. Elizabeth helps organizations reimagine their workday to focus on the right priorities that drive to the right outcomes, so people can be more effective and prevent burnout. Elizabeth is also the creator and host of the podcast You Need to Stop Doing That, challenging the belief that we should always add more to our lives–more tech solutions, more activities, more relationships, and more stuff. She interviews guests across industries who share their own experience with saying “no” so they can work and live in line with their priorities. Elizabeth is a business owner, wife, and mother of four young children who speaks from a place of honesty–not as someone who has all the answers, but as someone who, like most of us, is still trying to figure it out, and knows that it’s a life-long process. Elizabeth's writing has been featured in HuffPost, Thrive Global, Today's Parents, and Today's Christian Women. Her first book, Faith Powered Profession: A Woman's Guide to Living with Faith and Values in the Workplace was published in 2013 and helps women grasp the importance and power of their professional work. Her latest book, exploring the importance of working at the right pace, is set to be published in 2021.
