Ep 14S20E14 - Systems Thinking: Working Effectively in a Collaborative Environment
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) shares his keynote with the Lendlease LLevel UP program, out of Singapore, titled: "Systems Thinking: Working Effectively in a Collaborative Environment." Session Overview: A key characteristic of a future that is VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) is the interconnectedness and complexity of the problems we need to solve. Businesses of today operate in networked ecosystems and constant feedback loops; issues are interlinked, cut across the usual business silos, and with multiple perspectives to consider. And yet, we tend to think in linear and causal ways. To better manage the challenges of today, we need to consider problems holistically in terms of their structure and the interactions between components and their environments. Systems thinking helps in framing complex problems which are often misdiagnosed when using linear thinking. Come learn how systems thinking can give you a significant advantage and help you thrive in the future of work. Ep 26S19E26 - The Dangers of Leading with Fear in the Workplace, with Russell Heath
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Russell Heath about the dangers of leading with fear in the workplace. See the video here: https://youtu.be/t1FTWlUIQDs. Russell Heath (https://www.linkedin.com/in/russellheathcoaching/) came to leadership coaching after many years leading environmental organizations, mission-driven coalitions, and political campaigns in Alaska. In those efforts, it became clear to him that the essential element in the success or failure of any campaign or project was the quality of its leadership—and that leadership was more a function of character and being than it was of skills and techniques. In service to his own leadership, he moved to New York City and entered a rigorous leadership coaching program. Transformed by that experience, he decided to become a coach himself. He is a graduate of Accomplishment Coaching, one of the nation’s premier coaching schools, and has been coaching professionally since 2012. He coaches leaders in both for-profit corporations and non-profit organizations and high-performing professionals committed to making things happen in the world, their organizations, or their lives. He also works with entrepreneurs who are committed to building their businesses. In addition to his non-profit work, his professional background includes many years as an IT project manager and systems analyst. He has written two novels; lived in Italy and Australia; traveled twice around the world—once overland and once, alone, by sail; he dances (tango and swing); sings; thrives on serious backcountry expeditions (telemark skiing, canoeing, hiking); when he left Alaska in 2010, he bicycled to Mexico via the continental divide. His next trip is to row around Newfoundland and his next project is to write a book about sailing around the world. Ep 24S19E24 - Inspiring TED Talks - The Happy Secret to Better Work, with Shawn Achor
In this "Inspiring TED Talks" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores Shawn Achor's 2012 TED talk, "The Happy secret to Better Work." See the video here: https://youtu.be/fLJsdqxnZb0. Video Overview: "It’s generally assumed we have to work to be happy, but what if we have it backwards? That’s the argument psychologist and CEO Shawn Achor makes in this 2012 talk. Achor says we need to be happy independently of work, and only then will we be able to increase productivity and success in the workplace. Searching for happiness in the workplace can be a deep rabbit hole that often leads to less happiness overall. This is an important message for leaders, who seek to inspire other people in their line of work. It just so happens that developing happiness outside the 9-5 hours is the most important for our health and success." Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. He is the CEO of Good Think Inc., a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers -- people who are well above average -- to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures. He is also the author of The Happiness Advantage. Check out Dr. Westover's new book, The Alchemy of Truly Remarkable Leadership, here: https://www.innovativehumancapital.com/leadershipalchemy. Ep 22S19E22 - Being More Accepting and Understanding When an Employee is Diagnosed with a Chronic Illness, with Wendy Bjork
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Wendy Bjork about how we can become more accepting and understanding when an employee is diagnosed with a chronic illness, such as multiple sclerosis instead of causing them to hide it or fear disclosing their condition. See the video here: https://youtu.be/hpQUFKbPFPc. Wendy Bjork (https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendy-bj%C3%B6rk-aka-the-ms-warrior-queen%E2%84%A2-413a3318b/), aka The MS Warrior Queen™, has dealt with Multiple Sclerosis for 35 years, since she was in her late teens. She realized early on in her diagnosis that having a positive mindset and a strong faith was key in keeping the illness from taking completely over. After years of experiencing all different levels of exacerbations and permanent damage to her nervous system, she decided a few years ago to begin a journey to healing holistically. Wendy is now a mentor to other women diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, empowering them to improve their Mind, Body, Relationships and Environment through her Four Cornerstones Program™ to bring out their Inner MS Warrior Queen. Since MS is an "invisible illness", there is a lot of stigma around it and potentially a lot of underlying issues. Through her years of navigating it, Wendy has realized how many gaps in care exist and her mission is to bridge those gaps and give other ladies the tools to navigate their MS. Realizing the journey to wellness has so many different aspects and there is not one quick fix, this prompted her to become obsessed with changing the face of multiple sclerosis. Her background is in finance as well as being a licensed Insurance agent which brings light to the importance of a solid financial foundation. She has authored two books, "Can the Way We Clean Our Home Affect Our Immune System?" and "Multiple Sclerosis, Sneaking Up Without Warning Since 1873" which are both available for download on her website. Wendy is also an author for the National MS Society's Momentum Magazine, and shares her story in a real and raw way, to be the voice of those perhaps not willing to speak for themselves yet. Wendy has also participated in roundtable discussions with Dr. Terry Wahls in regard to her Wahls Protocol and additionally, she is regularly featured on various podcasts and interviews to share her journey in the US as well as globally. She is working on a women's empowerment book series as a co-author project, her current Four Cornerstones program has opened up and she's accepting four new clients who are ready to take charge of their MS and get back to wholeness.
