S9 Ep 105Episode 105: Let's Talk About BOOBS
Today we are going to be talking about...Boobs. Breasts, tits, hoohahs, boobies - whatever you want to call them, they are a noteworthy part of the human body, and hold particular anatomical and symbolic meaning. Different people will conjure up different associations and ideals when it comes to the topic of boobs. Today, we want to discuss it from the perspective of 3 cis-gendered Asian American women. We’re going to talk about our personal experiences: what our boobs mean to us, recalling our relationship with them through those awkward teenage years, reflecting on social perceptions (for example the idea that Asian women have particularly small boobs), bra and personality associations, and more. If you enjoyed this episode, tell us about your first training bra in the comments! Tammy & Michelle started Hate Is A Virus in April 2020 in response to the rise in hate crimes against Asian American Pacific Islanders due to the pandemic. Join in today as we process the recent events, learn more about the initiatives at Hate Is A Virus, and discuss ways to take action to #StopAsianHate. S9 Ep 103Episode 103: Get to Know Jenny Han! Author of the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" Series
On today's episode, we pick the brain of the mastermind behind the "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" trilogy, Jenny Han! She is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and also the executive producer on all three of the Netflix films - "To All the Boys I've Loved Before", "To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You", and the final film, "To All the Boys: Always and Forever" (out now!) When her first film came out on Netflix, we all watched the movie and relished in the sweet nostalgia of young love, re-living the butterflies from first crushes, feeling the blush in our cheeks from awkward “firsts”, and wiping away hot tears that stain a naive heart. Lara Jean & Peter Kavinsky have clearly captured the hearts of America, and today, we think Jenny Han will capture yours. If you've watched the final film, let us know what you think! S9 Ep 102Episode 102: Bling Empire's Kevin Talks Dating, His Asian American Identity, and What it's Like to be on a Reality TV Show
Join us as we chat with our friend and Bling Empire star, Kevin Kreider. As residents of LA working on projects promoting Asian American representation, we met Kevin years ago through our friends at Wongfu Productions, whose shorts Kevin has acted in. And Kevin actually hosted a gala where ABG received our first cultural impact award from APEX in 2019. In this episode, we talk about both the Kevin in Bling Empire and the Kevin BEFORE Bling Empire - the Kevin who worked as a model and fitness coach while running his own production company called Taejin Entertainment LLC. The Kevin who has been an advocate of redefining Asian masculinity for many years and has been a motivational speaker at places like TedX and Google about reclaiming Asian male sexuality in America. EWe made it!! Triple digits!!! 100 is the beginning of a new chapter that we are opening as we enter the uncharted, the unknown, and the incredibly promising year of 2021. S8 Ep 99Episode 99: How Are Parents Coping With Today's Social & Political Climate? Feat. Asian American Parents
We are a couple of weeks into 2021, the year following an U.S. election year unlike any other many of us in our lifetime have, and perhaps ever will, experience. And though we are hot off the inauguration last night where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were formally sworn into office, marking the start of a new presidency, the intensity and aftermath of the social and political landscape from 2020 continues to affect us all. Like many people, we have been feeling overwhelmed, and sometimes numb, by all that has happened, and continues to happen, in our world today. To help us understand, ground, and interpret the current world state from a different perspective than our own, we are going to speak with people we think have one of the hardest jobs when it comes to coping with today’s current events - parents. Thank you to Kelly Lang, Michael Banaag, and Divya Anand for sharing their stories and perspectives with us! S8 Ep 91Episode 91: Parking Lots, Leftovers, and Jade Bracelets - The People, Places, & Things That Shape Us
EPeople, Places, and things - in the most simple and direct translation, they are simply the definition of a noun. But these nouns are what makeup experiences, the many experiences throughout our lives that have shaped us into who we are today. From the people who left a lasting impression on us, the places that are painted with memories, to the inanimate objects that feel more living than not...all of these experiences have left a lasting impression on us for different reasons. In the Disney movie, “Inside Out”, they touch on the topic of “core memories”. Core Memories play a pivotal role in the film and are described as memories that feel more significant than regular memories. Core Memories essentially shape your personality and define who you are today. Today, we’ll be sharing our core memories, specifically the people, places, and things that have made an impact on our lives. S8 Ep 88Episode 88: Gratitude Takes Effort - Here's How We Do It
One can argue that gratitude is the most powerful of human emotions. There have been studies that show that the benefits of practicing gratitude include: improved physical health, better sleep, greater happiness, more self-esteem, stronger relationships, greater resilience, less anxiety, reduced symptoms of depression, and so much more. Practicing gratitude not only helps you to feel more grounded and peaceful, but it also improves your ability to share that love with others. To give back. To say thank you. And to re-commit to your inner values. However, gratitude doesn’t come easy for most of us. The fact is, we’re built for survival, not happiness, and therefore, gratitude takes effort. Join us as we practice a gratitude exercise together, and share ways we implement it in each of our lives. Leave a comment below about something you are grateful for :) This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh. --- P A R T N E R S mentioned in this episode: - Orgain: 20% off first purchase + extra savings when you subscribe at TryOrgain.com/ABG - BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month at betterhelp.com/ABG10 - Audible: 1 credit to pick any title + access to unlimited Audible Originals each month at Audible.com/ABG OR text ABG to 500 500 - Thrive Market: Free gift up to $24 in value at ThriveMarket.com/ABG - KiwiCo: 50% off first month + Free shipping on any crate line at kiwico.com with code ABG S U B S C R I B E T O U S ! - @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts / Spotify / YouTube / Instagram / Twitter / Facebook - More about us at asianbossgirl.com E – M A I L U S ! - [email protected] S U P P O R T U S ! - merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com - donation: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message Learn more about your ad choices. S8 Ep 87Episode 87: The Haunting of Your Corporate Horror Stories
Happy early Halloween everyone!! In episode 79, we shared with you all some of our spooky horror stories from our time working in corporate. Not a lot of us like to air out our dirty laundry when it comes to our jobs, out of fear of looking like a disgruntled worker, or even the possibility of getting fired. But we asked you on IG if you were open to sharing, and to our surprise, our DMs were FLOODED with your messages. From physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive bosses to countless stories of mismanagement, these are pretty heartbreaking to read. It seems there isn’t enough done to combat these toxic work environments. At the end of the day, we’re all in this together. And the more we share, the more we know that we’re not alone in these experiences. So on theme with this weekend’s Halloween celebrations, we decided to share some of YOUR work-related horror stories! S7 Ep 86Episode 86: Birds, Whales, Fails, and All the Scary Tales -- Our Greatest Fears!!
EThis month, we are focusing on the topic of Self Exploration, and as we near the end of October and edge closer to the spooktacular day of Hallow’s Eve, otherwise known as Halloween, we thought it would be appropriate to dedicate an episode to OUR GREATEST FEARS!! Fear is one of the seven universal emotions experienced by everyone around the world. Fear arises with the threat of harm, either physical, emotional, or psychological, real, or imagined. While traditionally considered a “negative” emotion, fear actually serves an important role in keeping us safe as it mobilizes us to cope with potential danger. Today, we discuss everything from surface-level phobias like clowns, whales, birds, holes??? to deeply significant life fears, like lack of direction, failure, public speaking, and all. S7 Ep 85Episode 85: A Letter To My Ex
Breakups...ugh they suck! Sometimes it's a clean break. But more often than not, the period that follows can be messy and often left with words unsaid. As time passes and more life and love insight are gained, we may have even more we'd like to say to our former partner. The 3 of us have thought back into our dating history and each selected one ex. We then each took the time to write a letter to this ex, and we’re going to spend this episode sharing and discussing those letters with each other and all of you! Have you tried this exercise? S7 Ep 84Episode 84: 4th Generation- Between Two Worlds with Sierra Katow & Taylor Chan
EThe Asian American identity & the stories that exist within our community are vast & extremely nuanced. The three of us have explored our own identities through various episodes (Episode 25: ABM-AsianBossMoms, Episode 63: APAHM - Growing Up in An Asian Household, Episode 64: My Asian Am Identity) with the lens of us specifically being 2nd gen Asian Americans. If you listened to those episodes, you heard us talk about our parents’ immigration stories and how we balance the culturally traditional side (that our parents pass down to us) with our western side (the environment we were raised in). Today, we want to explore another identity within the Asian American experience...the stories and perspectives of people who are 4th generation. And to help us explore this topic, we have brought on 2 very special & familiar faces (and voices)…Comedian/Writer, Sierra Katow, and Director/Writer, Taylor Chan! Tune in to hear them share their stories about the feeling of growing up “in-between” two worlds. S7 Ep 83Episode 83: Attachment Theory and Me
Happy October everyone! This month, we are focused on the topic of self-exploration. And today, we will be talking about the fascinating theory of attachment styles. This theory has studied how parents/caregivers have played a significant role in the attachment styles of their children. As children interact with these caregivers as a secure base to explore from and return to, the response from these caregivers leads to the development of patterns of attachment for the child, i.e. are the parent’s responses loving, caring, angry? These interactions then guide the child’s thoughts, feelings, and expectations in later relationships in life, romantic or otherwise. In the late 1980s, psychologists noticed that interactions between adults are similar to those between children and caregivers. For example, adults feel comforted when those they are attached to are present, or they become anxious or lonely when they are absent. They observed that romantic relationships serve as a secure base that helps people to face the surprises, opportunities, and challenges that life presents. So today, we’re getting personal and going deep by analyzing our attachment styles!! There are four main styles of attachment: 1) secure attachment, 2) anxious-preoccupied attachment, 3) dismissive-avoidant attachment, and 4) fearful-avoidant attachment. Which do you think we'll be? She creates content that educates her followers on low-maintenance and effective skin care, sharing her unconventional acne-fighting tips based on her own personal skincare experience. S7 Ep 81Episode 81: Finding the Right Career
EThis month, we are focused on the topic of careers and entrepreneurship. To find a career that is the right fit, it’s important to not only understand WHAT we want but WHO we are - what are we good at? Understanding our personal strengths, weaknesses, and work values is not a one-time exercise. It requires a lot of patience, dedication, and active energy to understand ourselves, and also account for all the ways in which we change over the span of our working years. To prepare for this episode, we each took a number of evaluation tests that measure our skills, personality preferences, and work values. We’ll talk about everything from our inductive reasoning skills to structural visualization skills to dominance vs. influence and end with a fun Buzzfeed quiz to evaluate what career we should each be in. S7 Ep 79Episode 79: Our Corporate Horror Stories
Although the three of us now work on AsianBossGirl full time, we all have had experience working in corporate. From that obnoxious coworker who loved hearing the sound of his own voice, to horrible bosses that lacked a single empathetic bone in his/her body, to comments from coworkers about race and an unnerving correlation with some aspect of your work. As kids, we would make up scary stories to tell our friends, but now as adults, we STILL have scary stories to tell – only this time, they’re 100% real, and 100% scary, if not more. In line with this month’s theme of entrepreneurship and careers, we take a walk down memory lane and recount some of the horrific instances we experienced while working our past jobs. S7 Ep 78Episode 78: Finding Hope
E2020 is proving to be a challenge. On a larger scale, the world is facing a global pandemic that is trickling down and unveiling an ugly side to our country. All of these things happening in the world, whether we want to admit or not, affect all of us on an individual level. Through our conversations with each other & with our loved ones, we realize there also exists a feeling of guilt. Guilt that tells us that we don’t “deserve” to feel sad or down because “someone else is going through something worse”. But now is not the time to ignore the voice in your head that separates your soul from your ego. With all the time we’re spending at home, battling safety and our own sanity, it has become increasingly important to learn to listen to ourselves -- all parts of ourselves – the bright AND the dreary. Because only then- can we learn to bring light into a world that otherwise feels dim. Today, we’re discussing how we’re finding positivity & hope during the time. S7 Ep 77Episode 77: A Woman’s Right to Vote
This year's August 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which guaranteed and protected women’s constitutional right to vote. As Asian American women, however, this celebration was a little different for us. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, but women of color were still marginalized under this law. The fight for voting rights for women of color continued for many years after 1920, and it wasn't until the Voting Rights Act in 1965 that racial discrimination was finally prohibited in voting. These series of events emphasize how powerful, sought after, and precious the right to vote is. Voting is the single most direct expression of how we want the social constructs of our society to be managed. Today's episode is dedicated to all the women who have fought, progressed, and won us the opportunity to exercise one of our most basic civic rights - the right to vote! We talk about our earliest memories of the concept of voting (does anyone remember high school superlatives, homecoming court, or student government?), if voting was ever discussed within our Chinese/Taiwanese households, our first times voting, the resources we used, and what voting means to us now. Our listeners have requested that we also dedicate an episode to the Enneagram - so here it is! S6 Ep 72Episode 72: How Well Do We Know Each Other?
EWe have been friends for over 5 years now (working together for 3 of those years) - we've recorded over 70 episodes together, spent many late nights meeting for both work and play, exchange messages on the daily (if not hourly), and have gone on multiple international trips together. But how well do we really know each other? Listen and find out as we guess each other's answers to questions about our careers, love and sex, friends and family, childhood, favorite foods, and some juicy random questions (the answers to which you may not want to know, like... who doesn't flush their toilet paper down the toilet?? haha). S6 Ep 67Episode 67: Black Lives Matter & Allyship
EThis past week, you may have noticed that we held back our regularly scheduled content to focus on the Black Lives Matter movement. To us, nothing is more important than life itself, and when our black and brown brothers and sisters have lost too many of their lives to the injustices built into America’s systems, we need to pause and reflect on how we, as Asian Americans, can do our part to help. We are outraged at the death of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more unarmed black people whose names are not currently in the news. We are outraged at the persistence of police brutality, at the treatment of protestors, at white privilege, at systemic racism, and at our president. We are donating, e-mailing representatives, using our voice amongst our spheres of influence, and encouraging the people we know to do the same. So we hope that with this episode, we can continue to discuss, listen and learn from one another. Comment below with stories of the conversations that you're having with your loved ones. What was the most difficult part of the conversation? What would be helpful to hear from another ABG in the community? Share with us also any resources that you've found helpful to you. *We will be donating a portion of the ad revenue generated from this episode to various organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. S6 Ep 66Episode 66: Coming Out with Anna Lee and Justin Rodjanapanyakul
This episode comes at the cusp of May and June - one month celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage, and the other, LGBTQI with Pride month. Identity plays such a big role in a person’s life, and there are so many facets to it. In this episode, we explore sexual orientation, specifically, homosexuality, and the nuances of what that means when you’re Asian American. Our two guests are very good friends of ours and after having many of these types of conversations offline, we are so happy to offer our platform for them to share their stories. Anna Lee is a very close friend of Mel's who resides in San Francisco where she works at Facebook as a Business Lead for Entertainment. Anna goes by the pronouns of she/her and identifies as queer. Justin Rodjanapanyakul is a close friend of all 3 of ours (you might recognize him in some of our Instagram posts where he has graciously offered his photography skills). Justin is based in the Los Angeles area where he is a musician and YouTuber, known as one half of the duo, JRodTwins. Justin goes by the pronouns he/his and his sexual orientation is gay. [BONUS]: From the Covid Frontlines with Nurse Michelle Acob
bonusEThis Hero Story is brought to you by McDonald's. With all that is happening with the pandemic, McDonald's is putting forward the effort to showcase the many kinds of heroes in the Asian Pacific American community. McDonald's desire to uplift and highlight community heroes is guided by the belief that we are all in this together, and they are committed to caring for local heroes who are caring for our country. COVID19 has profoundly impacted the world. We’ve all had to adjust to a new normal, and that new normal has looked different for everyone. In recent episodes, we shared how COVID19 has impacted our personal lives, and our experiences have reflected that of many individuals who are adjusting to the stay-at-home order. In this bonus episode, we want to recognize and honor a local community hero who is working directly on the frontlines. Today, we have Michelle Acob, a bedside and charge nurse at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose - a trauma hospital. Michelle works in one of Santa Clara County’s first Covid-19 units starting in March 2020. As a charge and infection prevention nurse, she oversees the entire Covid-19 unit and is in control of bedding patients and guiding 10-12 nurses with their assigned patient loads. S6 Ep 63Episode 63: APAHM - Growing Up In An Asian Household
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, APAHM for short! During this month, we celebrate the cultures, traditions, and history of AAPI’s in the United States. This country is very much shaped by the stories of immigrants from Asia and the Pacific and the native people of the Pacific Islands. Today, we will be sharing with you our personal stories as Asian American women -- the traditions and foods we remember from our childhood, where we grew up, what it was like to visit "the motherland", and how these experiences have impacted our journey with shaping our own cultural identity. S6 Ep 62Episode 62: Loneliness, Connection, and Online Dating
EABG is officially in season 6! With the stay-at-home order still in place, we continue to record from each of our own homes. By now, we are a little more settled into this new, temporary normal of social distancing, but it can be challenging to cope with the inevitable loneliness. In collaboration with Bumble, this episode is dedicated to ways we are dealing with loneliness and how we are connecting with others through online apps. We discuss profile creation and evaluation tactics (we talk about wanting a horoscope filter, which you can actually find in the settings on your Bumble app!); how to start a conversation; and for those listeners like Helen who aren't on the search for a Boo anymore, our experiences with Bumble BFF (there's an option to hide date mode for users who are looking to make friends/network). We also appreciate that Bumble's priority is safety, and creating an inclusive/safe environment for it's users to make connections. S6 Ep 61Episode 61: Therapy and Mental Health with Haesue Jo (MA, LMFT)
Mental health is a topic that we get many messages about from our listeners. It’s a sensitive and complicated topic, and especially with all the recent world events that have occurred, we thought now is the right time to take a deeper dive into this topic. Back in July 2019, we released Episode 44: Mental Health with Christine Chen wherein our good friend shared her personal experience with clinical depression. Today, we wanted to offer a different perspective on the topic by bringing in Haesue Jo, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in the Bay Area, California. Haesue has 7 years of experience as a mental health professional, including working with Asian-American youth, families, and adults, given her firsthand experience dealing with generational and cultural differences in her own family. Haesue is also the Clinical Support Lead at BetterHelp, the largest online counseling platform worldwide. You can learn more about Haesue at betterhelp.com/haesue-jo. S5 Ep 58Episode 58: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus
EIt’s an age old point of contention, discussion, and often times, frustration - the differences between men and women, and of course nowadays with all the variations of gender identity, the complexity continues to grow - just how different is the opposite sex (or sexes)? Are men (and all those who identify as male) really from Mars, and women (and all those who identify as female) really from Venus? Today we have invited 2 very special ABB guests (Mike Bow & Jason Rodjanapanyakul to explore just how different (or similar) ABGs and ABBs really are. This will be an open forum and a safe space to ask each other ANY and ALL questions we may have about the opposite sex. Take a listen to our season finale & let us know what you think!
