S17 Ep 201Episode 201: Romance, Success, and Longevity - How Accurate Was Our 2021 Psychic Reading?
In January of 2021, we sat down with Carla, a Spiritual Medium, Healer, and Intuitive Counselor, who we got to ask about our FUTURES. Mel and Janet asked for insight in their searches for life partners, Helen received recommendations on areas to focus on and strengthen, and the three of us asked for advice for ABG’s success and longevity. Almost two years later, we’re reviewing what Carla read in our futures and comparing it to our lives today! Especially given the recent romance in Mel and Janet’s lives. What came to fruition within the last 2 years? What may still be coming around the corner in 2023? Check out Episode 98: We Did A Psychic Reading, to hear more of our original predictions, and learn more about Carla and her services at guidedbydivine.com! Have you ever had a psychic reading? It’s our final episode of the year (and also coincidentally our 200th episode!) 2022 certainly flew by, and as we prepare for the New Year, we wanted to take the time to reflect on the 5 Ws (who, what, when, where, and why) of this eventful year, both as individuals and as a company. S16 Ep 195Episode 195: ABG Favorites - 36 Questions to Fall in Love (Episode 35)
“The 36 Questions That Lead to Love” by Daniel Jones on The New York Times challenges friends and couples to be candid through a series of personal questions. There are three sets of twelve questions each, with increasing levels of vulnerability. This activity is based on a psychology study that explored how intimate and honest conversation creates connection and increases closeness, even if the participants were strangers at the start. After starting a podcast and business together, we know a lot about one another, but we wanted to challenge ourselves in this episode to explore even deeper levels of closeness through this activity. Tune in as we share what our perfect day looks like, how often we sing to ourselves, and what one quality or ability we would want to gain. As yet another year comes to a close, it’s always nice to look back on past episodes and hear what’s changed over the years. Today we’re playing one of Janet’s favorite episodes: our very first episode of Season 4 (we’re now on Season 16!), which she loves for the intimate conversation we shared while recording. We answered Set I in this episode, but you can also go back to listen to Part 2 on Episode 37: 36 Questions to Fall in Love (Part II). Leave us a heart in the comments if you would explore these questions with a friend, acquaintance, or stranger! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Vaccines: Find vaccines and boosters near you at vaccines.gov • Issuu: Sign up for FREE or get 50% off a premium account with code ASIANBOSSGIRL at issuu.com/podcast • Sweet or Savory with Alyssa and AJ: Catch new episodes every week on Spotify or wherever you listen to your podcasts and follow them @sweetorsavorypod __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: The Lessons We’ve Learned In Our First Year as Parents
This year has been jam-packed with new life experiences. As our baby reaches the ripe age of 1 (very soon!), I wanted to bring my husband, Philip Wang, on to the pod to talk about what it’s been like to take on this new identity of a parent. If we could turn back time, what is a piece of advice we would’ve told ourselves one year ago today? What is something we didn’t know or expect to happen in the first year as new parents that surprised us? Becoming a parent is a major life transition, and all transitions, no matter how eagerly anticipated, are accompanied by stress, fear, and lots of unknowns. We’re ecstatic that we survived the first year. And grateful that we can impart what we’ve learned to everyone that tunes in. Here are a few shortcuts if you’d like to hop to a topic that interests you! [01:38] – My Giggle and Drool of the Week [09:09] – What would we tell ourselves as new parents, one year ago today? [28:49] – Something we didn’t expect to happen in the first year as new parents, that did happen! [44:12] – Outro After you’ve taken a listen, let me know in the comments of our IG post if you related to this episode in any way. What are some lessons that you can share with first time parents? Is there anything we missed in this episode that you would like to add? As always, thank you for allowing me to share my personal journey with you all. I have so much more to learn and would love to continue connecting and learning from all of you out there. K-Dreaming with Mel: The K-Dramas of 2022 That Didn't Meet the Hype (ft. Anna Lee)
Hello K-Dreamers! We are quickly approaching the end of 2022 and the end of a full year of K-Drama watching. There were some dramas that quickly became a fan favorite, like “Little Women”, and sleeper hits that we didn't expect to love so much, like “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” There were also shows we just did NOT like (side note: Is it just me, or does no one talk about the K-Dramas they dislike out loud?) For today’s episode, I thought it would be fitting to talk through the Best & Worst Kdramas of 2022! Join me and my friend Anna as we chat through our personal favorites, and ones that just did not hit the mark. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: How We Got Our Baby to Sleep through the Night
We started sleep training our little one at nine months, and it has been a bittersweet journey. For his first nine months of life, every single night we held him in our arms, rocking him back and forth, dipping him up and down, snuggling him until he found his way into a comfortable nook of our arms to fall asleep in. Our hearts were heavy to start the sleep training process – would he ever fall asleep in our arms again? But we were ready to sleep more than a few hours (usually 2 to 3 hours) at a time. We recently hit the 10-month regression and he’s been pulling himself up to stand in his crib so it’s a whole new ball game now! But for a whole month, our little one slept 10-12 hours straight each night. In this episode, I share how we got our lil bubs to fall asleep independently, putting him down fully awake in his crib between 7-8PM, to waking up ~5:30-7AM, i.e., through the night. I am so proud of our little boy for learning to sleep on his own!! I remember thinking how difficult those sleepless nights were. On us, and on him. But I wouldn’t trade those 9 months for anything <3 Here are a few shortcuts if you’d like to hop to a topic that interests you! Living Well with Janet: I Had an Energy Healing Session and Here’s What Happened
Have you ever heard of “energy healing”, “Reiki”, or phrases like “balancing your chakras”? As someone who started my interest in wellness rooted more in traditional Western concepts of nutrition and health, energy healing is something I might have rolled my eyes at a decade ago. But since that time, I have been more curious about this modality of wellness, of healing. If you’re in the same boat as me – curious about this modality, but a little skeptical – listen to this episode where I share about my first energy healing experience (live audio from the session included!). Have you ever had an energy healing session? Or are you interested in trying it? We discuss romantic relationships often on our podcast, but today, we’re putting the spotlight on friendships. Life is best lived with friends, those who become your chosen family, through all the ups and downs. But as we journey through different life stages, some friendships become passive, or fall apart altogether. What are the qualities we value in a close friend nowadays? How are those qualities similar or different to those we seek in a romantic partner? And how do we recover from the heartbreak of a lost friendship? Tag some of your lifelong friends and share one of your favorite memories together in the comments! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Vaccines: Find vaccines and boosters near you at vaccines.gov __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: How Pregnancy Changed My Body
With any pregnancy, one of the most obvious and dramatic transformations is the physical one. As a first-time mom, I knew I’d be packing on the lbs throughout my pregnancy journey, but the weight gain and acceptance of this new body took time. I share in this episode what it was like to gain more than the recommended amount of weight for someone of my BMI during my pregnancy, the pressures to “bounce back” post-pregnancy, how my body changed, and also, how to (and not to) compliment someone who just gave birth. Society has always had a ridiculous standard on what women should look like post-birth. But a mother’s appearance after her baby isn’t what’s important, and we should not measure a mother by how quickly she can “bounce back.” Not now, not ever. With this episode, my hope is to encourage celebrating our bodies for what it has done, for what it IS doing, and for what it WILL do, not for what it once was. Here are a few shortcuts if you’d like to hop to a topic that interests you! [00:43] – My Giggle and Drool of the Week [03:05] – Disclaimer [03:25] - How much weight should you gain from pregnancy? [07:29] – A baby is only on average 5-10lbs. Where does all the other pregnancy weight come from? [09:02] – Was there any pressure to “bounce back” to my pre-baby weight? [12:37] – What are my post-pregnancy goals? [13:39] – How my body has changed [15:58] – How to (and not to) compliment someone who just gave birth [17:33] - Appreciating our bodies for what it is doing and will do After you’ve taken a listen, let me know in the comments of our IG post what your experience has been like with the physical changes your body has gone through. Or, if you plan to be a mom one day, what did you hear in this episode that might’ve surprised you? As always, thank you for allowing me to share my personal journey with you all. I have so much more to learn and would love to continue connecting and learning from all of you out there. S16 Ep 188Episode 188: ABG Favorites - Wax On, Wax Off (Episode 3)
Sugaring, bikini waxes, Brazilians, and landing strips - do you know what all of these terms mean? The practice of personal grooming “down there” is not a topic that is often discussed, particularly among young Asian Americans. So whether you shave, wax, laser, or keep it natural, we’re here to share our tips and stories for anyone who wants to learn more about the waxing process. Since we just passed our 5 year anniversary, we thought it would be fun to replay one of our favorite episodes, all the way back to Episode 3! Living Well with Janet: That Time I Went to Chinese Medicine School
Those of you who have listened to some of our earlier episodes at ABG know that I have switched careers many times. I started out at one of the Big 4s working in global transfer pricing, then in social enterprise, before switching to strategy in advertising, and finally landing in UX design before going full time on ABG. However, between my stint in Advertising and my time in UX design, I actually spent about half a year in Chinese Medicine School. AsianBossGirl just passed our 5th birthday! On September 21, 2017 we released our very first episode, “ABG - What’s in a Name?” At that time, this was very much a passion project - we were three girlfriends with corporate jobs, sitting around a table drinking wine, who decided to share our experiences as Asian American women with the Internet. Now, five years later, we’ve established a company, a community, and we’ve grown as individuals - all thanks to the amazing support we’ve received from you - our listeners! Thank you for spending your time with us, and reflect with us as we look back on our favorite episodes, compare our past and present aspirations, and send a message to our future selves. S16 Ep 185Episode 185: Increasing Laotian Visibility as a Multi-Hyphenate Storyteller - with Kulap Vilaysack
Kulap Vilaysack’s career path was not a linear one, but it landed her in Hollywood – from Nurse Kulap in Childrens Hospital to guest roles on Bob’s Burgers, The Office, and more. Over the course of her decades-long career, she has witnessed the media and entertainment industries evolve and change for the better. From her experiences as an actress, comedian, writer and showrunner, Kulap has seen that representation must start from the top of the ladder, and goes beyond simply casting diverse actors. On this episode, Kulap shares her own origin story, and how it led her to starting Laos Angeles, a movement for the Laos diaspora that seeks to amplify their identity and representation in mainstream media, as well as her favorite part of co-hosting the podcast “Add to Cart” with SuChin Pak (who we interviewed on Episode 181)! S15 Ep 183Episode 183: Janet’s Egg Freezing Journey - Giving Yourself Time to Start a Family
As many listeners may already know, Janet is going through the process of freezing her eggs. At the time of this episode’s release, she just finished her first cycle, and she’s planning to do 1-2 more cycles to collect additional eggs. Fertility is still a topic that is not often talked about, so today, Janet is here to share her personal experience and walk us through every step of the process: why she decided to freeze her eggs, how her day-to-day life was affected, and some helpful tips she’s learned so far in her journey. She’s here to shed light on parts of the procedure that may seem scary to some (costs, medication, etc.), the ups and downs of the egg freezing process, and how this whole experience has given her more awareness of her own body. For more information about egg freezing and IVF, you can also listen to our episode with Dr. Huang. Welcome to the very first episode of Spill the Baby Tea!! I’m your host, Helen Wu-Wang, and I am so excited to create a space for all of us to candidly talk about all things motherhood and parenthood. As a first-time mom to an 8-month-old baby boy and a busy working parent, I am here to share with you all what it is really like to juggle both. From breastfeeding and all the ups and downs of that journey, to why my husband Philip and I decided not to show our baby’s face on social media, to what my confinement period led by my super traditional Chinese mom was like, to finding the balance between entrepreneurial aspirations and being a present and intentional parent... there’s so much to cover. So of course – they had to be my very first topic. I am so excited to learn and grow together with you all in this lifelong journey of parenthood. Living Well with Janet: What Does it Mean to Live Well?
Hi, it’s Janet! Most of you know that I’m an avid yogi, meditator, plant-based eater and all-around wellness enthusiast. As a 2nd generation Asian American woman, I often find myself experimenting with Western health trends against the context of the Eastern philosophies I was raised with. I’ve shared parts of my wellness journey in various ABG episodes, but there are pieces I have yet to reveal. Listen to this episode for a thorough recount of my journey to wellness (so far). I explore what it means to live well and talk about periods in my life when I felt unwell and how I sought to feel better. My goal with this show is not to provide formal medical or health advice - I am not licensed to do that. Nor am I trying to push any one type of diet, workout, spiritual practice, etc. I am merely a youngish middle-aged person who is trying to live my life well, and in doing so, like to expose myself to lots of different practices and perspectives which I want to share with you in the hopes that it enlivens your own personal journey to living well. If you enjoyed this episode, I’d love it if you leave a comment in our IG post with one thing you’re doing for your wellness and which of the 6 dimensions it addresses (not sure what the 6 dimensions are? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out!) S15 Ep 181Episode 181: Two Minute News Segments on MTV Led to a Trailblazing Career for SuChin Pak
Our guest today is SuChin Pak, who is best known for being the first Asian American correspondent at MTV in the early 2000s, and one of the few Asian women we got to see consistently on our TV screens as teenagers. She started as a teen reporter on her local news channel, but didn’t expect to pursue a career in media – there weren’t others like her in the field back then. But thanks to her inspirational work, many of us are now able to consider creative careers that we didn’t think were possible before. Currently, she co-hosts the podcast “Add to Cart” with comedian and actress Kulap Vilaysak, and recently wrote the introduction for the anthology series: My Life: Growing Up Asian In America. Join us as SuChin shares her experience of entering the world of journalism during a time before social media, and how her career has informed her thoughts on community building and identity. Which Asian Americans inspired you growing up, or motivated you to pursue your career? __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Janet Wang Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • NEIWAI: Get 25% off your purchase with code ABG25 (now until 9/16/2022) at neiwai.us/3I7f3Cw • Gusto: Gusto: Get 3 months free at gusto.com/abg • WeBudding: Use promo code “boss” to get 50% off at en.webudding.com/boss • Shopify: Get a free 14 day trial and full access to entire suite of features at shopify.com/abg __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S15 Ep 180Episode 180: Our Hall Passes - Asian Men Edition
Today, we are celebrating Asian men in pop culture and media: those who made an impact on our lives growing up, and those we now admire for using their platforms to advocate for their community. These men have certainly proved that society’s measure of “hotness” has expanded beyond the notion that Asian men are not appealing, and should continue to expand. We reveal who our first Asian male celebrity crushes were, which actors we would want to star alongside in our theoretical biopics, and discuss how our personal definitions of “attractiveness” have changed over time. Who are your past and current Asian celebrity crushes, and why? Let us know in the comments! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Jordan Harbinger Show: Search "The Jordan Harbinger Show" on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts, or go to jordanharbinger.com/subscribe • Peloton: Get 30 days of Free Classes on the App - Learn more at onepeloton.com • Vegamour: Get 20% off your first order with code abg at vegamour.com/abg • NEIWAI: Get 25% off your purchase with code ABG25 (now until 9/16/2022) at neiwai.us/3I7f3Cw • Hubspot: Get started at hubspot.com __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S15 Ep 179Episode 179: How to Retire Early and Manage Debt with YourRichBFF, Vivian Tu
“Everybody knows that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but why can’t someone teach me how to do my taxes correctly?” We’ve all wished at some point in life that personal finance was taught in schools with as much emphasis as algebra and biology. Starting your first job and learning how to save, invest, and manage your money can be difficult without the help of an expert. Vivian Tu has made it her mission to make professional financial advice easily accessible. In 2021, she started posting videos as YourRichBFF to combat misleading information during the pandemic when many people were struggling to make ends meet. With her background on Wall Street at JP Morgan, her content helps the people who are “leftover” by the finance world - women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community and low-income groups - who otherwise would not have access to that information. In this episode, we asked her all our burning finance questions to get her insight on what you should know before buying a home, running a business, starting a family, and more. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Green Chef: Use code abg135 for $135 off 5 boxes + free shipping at greenchef.com/abg135 • Tailor Brands Plans: Get 40% off at tailorbrands.com/abg *Not valid on LLC • Stitch Fix: Visit stitchfix.com/abg and get $20 off your first purchase • Everlywell: Get 20% off your first at-home lab test at everlywell.com/abg • WeBudding: Use promo code “boss” to get 50% off at en.webudding.com/boss __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S15 Ep 177Episode 177: Abortion is Healthcare - Protecting the Right to Choose in Post-Roe America
On June 24, 2022 the Supreme Court voted to overrule Roe v. Wade, a landmark court case which granted federal protections for the privacy of Americans seeking to terminate a pregnancy. The legality of an abortion is now determined on a state-by-state basis, and already several states have implemented a total ban on abortion. This issue has been weighing heavily on our hearts for the past two weeks as we wonder what a Post-Roe America looks like. Whether abortion affects you directly or not, it is important to learn and share what the Supreme Court’s ruling means for abortion rights across America, and how the consequences will ripple out across the country. What are Trigger Laws? What does this mean for fertility treatments like IVF? How can we continue to protect the Right to Choose? “You don’t have to like abortion, but you have to respect other people’s rights, and that includes the right to safe, accessible abortion.” - @strong.ass.women For more resources on this issue, visit: AbortionFinder.org - Find abortion services and the most up-to-date information about State-to-State abortion laws. S14 Ep 168Episode 168: Asian American Identity with Old Navy’s Head of Voice, Jeanine Pang
In our last episode, the three of us talked about our relationships with our Asian American identity. Today, as we often do on this podcast, we have invited a guest to offer a different perspective on this topic. She is the Senior Creative Director, Head of Voice at Old Navy, a brand often associated with traditional Americana when we were teenagers - I don’t know if anyone else remembers those Old Navy 4th of July T-shirts, but they were pretty iconic and widely worn when we were young. Jeanine also happens to be an Asian American woman. As Head of Voice, she’s created award-winning marketing campaigns for the brand, including the size-inclusive Bodequality! campaign last year. Before Old Navy, she has written and edited for Vogue, W Magazine, Refinery29, and Opening Ceremony. She also has a masters in journalism from columbia university, and has written numerous culture features and op-eds. In our personal conversations, she has shared her passion for the Asian American identity - thinking through questions like “What does it mean to be Asian? and “What does it mean to be American?” We shared some of our own perspectives on this topic in the last episode, and now, we get to hear from Jeanine. This month, we’re working with Old Navy on a campaign to celebrate our AAPI heritage and reclaim what it means to be ‘American’ in 2022”. We are so pleased to be partnering with them on this very important conversation, so thank you, Old Navy, for sponsoring this episode.
