Living Well with Janet: EMDR, Trauma, and Mental Wellbeing with Dr. Monica Band
What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and who can benefit from it? Is trauma limited to single-event experiences? How does Gen Z approach mental health versus previous generations? To help me answer these questions is Dr. Monica Band, an award-winning practicing mental health therapist and educator, specializing in providing trauma-informed care for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), with an emphasis on Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and LGBTQIA+ communities. She is also the host of a new podcast called I Need to Ask You Something from Lemonada Media and the Jed Foundation, a timely series featuring stories about mental health, told directly from teens across the country. No matter your circumstance, I believe almost everyone can benefit from better understanding the role that trauma plays in one’s well-being and learn about methods for better coping in today’s chaotic world. __________________________________________ Host: Janet Wang Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S21 Ep 245Episode 245: Talking About Death & Aging with Our Parents
Today’s topic of aging is more somber than usual. Walking through many stages of life with our parents is a blessing for us, but it’s still difficult to come to terms with the passage of time. As physical changes become more apparent, aging is not an avoidable subject. How do we navigate these conversations with our parents and siblings, particularly if it’s taboo to talk about? How will we address life’s natural processes with our own kids in the future? Though it may be challenging to bring up, we believe that normalizing discussions around aging can be healthy for everyone involved, and make difficult future events a bit easier. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Rakuten: Start all your shopping at rakuten.com or get the free Rakuten app to start saving today • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. S20 Ep 242Episode 242: Healing After Miscarriage - Anne Phung’s TTC Journey
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month in the United States. Although research suggests that over 30% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, this experience can feel extremely isolating and lonely for families. It certainly did for our guest today, Anne Phung Nguyen Guzman, who experienced 2 miscarriages before giving birth to her beautiful baby boy last summer. Lack of support and empathy from her medical team, as well as toxic positivity from people around her, only made this process even more difficult. Anne has since shared her experiences on social media with vulnerability and honesty, in hopes that others who are going through their TTC (Trying to Conceive) journey can feel less alone. Everyone’s TTC journey is unique and deeply personal, so we hope this episode can provide some comfort and insight if you or a loved one are going through this process. __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Living Well with Janet: How to Keep a Positive Mindset When Everything Feels Like it’s Going to 💩
Have you ever experienced a situation that seemed catastrophic in the moment, like when you think back to it as a memory, you feel it in your body - whether it was wide-eyed panic, stomach sinking disbelief, or rising anger fuming through your nose and exiting your mouth in expletives? In this episode, I share how I discovered that my car was stolen, the surprisingly calm reaction I had, and how I was able to achieve this mindset. No Dumb Questions with Mel: My Journey with my Body Image Pt. 1
I've been avoiding this topic for 2 years now. My relationship with my body image is something I try to protect, because it's one that has brought me a lot of pain. There was a time that I blamed my body for my unhappiness and the demon of comparison was a very large figure that took over. It's a relationship that I'd consider a "work in progress" despite being in a better mental place. After getting to a place of contentment, I wanted to share my journey with my body image. This journey is one I never thought I'd go through and one I'm still nervous to share for many reasons. I feel like when people think of "body image issues", it looks a certain way to them. However, I learned that it's a spectrum and to not discredit any of these unsettling feelings. Everybody is different and everyone has their own relationship with their physical self. If you choose to listen to this episode, I hope you listen with an open heart and mind. Hopefully, this episode connects with some of you. *Content Warning: There will be talk about weight gain, nutrition, and body image. __________________________________________ Host: Melody Cheng Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. S20 Ep 235Episode 235: Demystifying the Porn Industry with Leo Vice
The topic of sex, pornography, and sex work is still considered pretty taboo in our society, particularly in Asian communities. This has been a highly requested topic for ABG, not only to promote conversation, but also because many are curious about representation in an industry that still highly favors Western beauty standards. Asian women are often fetishized and Asian men are often emasculated in mainstream media, so what does it look like in adult entertainment? On this episode, we’ve invited Leo Vice to talk about his experience breaking into the porn industry: how he went from working a corporate job, to self-producing his own content, to being one of very few Asian male porn stars in the industry today. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Janet Wang Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • Stitch Fix: Get 25% off your purchase at stitchfix.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: My Baby Was AT My WEDDING?!
Never in all the years I've dreamed up my wedding did I think I’d have my baby by my side. Never could I imagine, even now, not having our lil kiwi head right there with us. Our little man reveled in every moment of the day -- calling out to us with his cheerful "mama baba!" during the ceremony, effortlessly floating from one guest to the other, his infectious energy lighting up the dance floor. He definitely had the best time of his tiny little life and became a true highlight of our wedding. This episode is dedicated to how we planned the logistics of having our baby at our wedding, as well as recounting some of the more special moments of how we incorporated him into our wedding. For those who also chose the "non-traditional" path of welcoming a baby before their wedding, we'd love to hear how you artfully integrated your baby into your wedding day. Summer is all about sunshine and longer days spent with loved ones. This year in particular, we want to take full advantage of this season by embracing our summer-loving selves with confidence and unleashing our wild side! It’s the perfect time to look back on some of the hilarious (sometimes embarrassing) and unforgettable moments with friends. We even dive into a bit of the hypothetical: What if you and your friend are stranded on a desert island? How do you flirt at a summer pool party? And: If you were a popsicle, what seductive name would you give yourself? Grab a friend, and let us know how you would answer these questions in the comments! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. It’s been a pretty big year for me for a number of reasons, but an even bigger year for a few of my loved ones. As someone who is fairly introverted and generally shies away from hosting events and celebrations, I’ve had to step into my discomfort a couple of times this year. In this episode, I share how I hosted three major social events as someone who isn't the hosting type - my partner's birthday, a best friend's bachelorette, and my dad's retirement party. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: My Mom Spanked Me! Parenting in the 90s vs Now - feat. Momma Wu
Have you ever wondered how your parents raised you versus how you would raise your own children? My mom would tell me these stories about how we were weaned off diapers by the age of 1, that talk about SIDS and safe co-sleeping was not a popular topic of conversation, that we were spanked as a form of discipline, and organic foods? Who needs that! On this episode, I bring my mom, Momma Wu, on to talk about the differences between parenting as an immigrant mother in the 1990s and parenting as a second-generation Asian American, now, in the 21st century. Who was my support system? In this episode, I offer a high-level checklist of the key ways that I prepared myself for this significant endeavor. If you're interested in my full story with extensive details, check out: Ep 183: Janet’s Egg Freezing Journey - Giving Yourself Time to Start a Family and Ep 208: Checking In with Janet 6 Months Post-Egg Retrieval on the main AsianBossGirl show. __________________________________________ Host: Janet Wang Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S19 Ep 224Episode 224: Office Poops, Politics, & Printers - What We Do/Don’t Miss About Corporate
It’s been 3 years since we left our corporate jobs to work on ABG full time, and although our work looks very different from those days, there are some perks that we still miss. From benefits, to even just office supplies – what are the parts of working in Corporate that worked for us? Do we miss the “stability” of a corporate career? And, on the flip side, what are we very happy to have left behind? __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Honey: Try PayPal Honey for free at JoinHoney.com/ABG • Lululemon: Shop the Hotty Hot Shorts and more at lululemon.com __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. No Dumb Questions with Mel: Did Your Asian Parents Give you the Sex Talk?!
Today, we’re talking about sex. No, not the juicy details! But the awkward conversation you may or may not have had with your parents (for me, my auntie) about the birds and the bees. Are you feeling awkward yet? haha In this episode, I also recount how the conversation of sex was brought up and how my mother showed up for me in a way I never expected. __________________________________________ Host: Melody Cheng Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. S19 Ep 223Episode 223: Learning to Thrive Emotionally in Relationships, with Relating Between the Lines
When it comes to conflict with friends and family, it can be difficult to clearly express and elucidate your emotions. Particularly when you factor in cultural differences and generational gaps. Relating Between the Lines (RBTL), a school for relational education, has made it their mission to equip people with the tools they need to navigate these conversations. The co-founders of RBTL, Stephanie and Norman, join us to share how their personal experiences informed their emotional development and walk us through techniques for how you can improve your relationships and communication skills. Through live and online learning experiences, RBTL helps people embrace conflict, befriend emotions, listen deeply, and express authentically. As a first-generation Chinese-Vietnamese American woman, Stephanie seeks to empower Asian women to believe in their natural gifts, step into leadership roles, and take up space through mastery and embodiment of their emotional intelligence and soft skills. Norman is on a mission to “queer-eye” communication by sharing what he’s learned as a gay neurodivergent (ADHD 2e) man trying to find a sense of belonging in a world that is not designed for people like him. __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Stitch Fix: Get 25% off your purchase at stitchfix.com/ABG • Relating Between the Lines: Self-Guided Course - Get 10% off the RBTL Self-Guided Course at https://bit.ly/rbtl-sgc-abg Cohort-Based Course - Get 10% off the RBTL Lite or Signature 6-week experience after you apply and are accepted into the October 2023 cohort at https://bit.ly/rbtl-abg Referral Name - AsianBossGirl __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: How to Find Yourself Again as a New Parent feat. Executive & Life Coach, Bea Kim
Today’s guest answers all of life’s burning questions. “I feel like I’ve lost myself. I don’t know who I am anymore. How do I find myself again?” “How do I live a more intentional life?” “I want to be present for my family and make Partner, but how can I do both?” “What are some tactical ways to overcome burnout?” Bea Kim is an Executive & Life Coach who primarily serves working parents, high-potential leaders and executives, and she has worked directly with larger companies like Google, Adobe, and Facebook. She is also a group coach for the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Helen here! I am all about tactical advice, and less about the woo-woo (even though Wu is my last name ;)). Bea Kim provides just that in this episode – tangible ways to lead a more intentional life. Straight from our editor: “Bea is so insightful and such a great speaker! I feel like I learned a lot that could be applied to my life, even though I'm not a parent.” If you resonated with this episode, share in the comments of AsianBossGirl’s latest Instagram post. S19 Ep 222Episode 222: Janet & Mel Getting Engaged? Baby #2 for Helen? ABG Reality Show?! ABG Assumptions
On this podcast, we try to be as open and candid as possible. But realistically, our public persona only represents 5% of our lives. So, we wondered how much your assumptions about us match up with what’s really going on. From our personalities (Is Helen the most outgoing?) to our careers (Is ABG writing another book?) to our future plans (Would we ever move out of LA?) - are your assumptions about us correct? __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • ZocDoc: Download the ZocDoc app for FREE at ZocDoc.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Living Well with Janet: How I find SPACE in my life - My Meditation Journey
This episode is not about trying to convince anyone to meditate, if they aren’t somewhat interested already. I think most people I’ve spoken to don’t need to be sold on meditation and would like to start meditating, but the common hang-ups I hear are: "How do you meditate? Like what is going on when your eyes are closed? What am I supposed to be doing?" and "I've tried meditating before - I've downloaded apps, watched videos, or attended a short session - but I always fall off the habit. How do I develop a meditation practice or ritual? If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a meditating emoji in the comments, and if you feel so inspired, please share with me where you are in your meditation journey! S19 Ep 221Episode 221: There’s Nothing Sexier Than Good Food - feat. Ronnie Woo
As a society, we typically eat three meals a day, so nothing brings people together as much as food. Especially GOOD food. Today’s guest is a model turned therapist turned chef - Ronnie Woo, the author of a new cookbook, “Did You Eat Yet?” which celebrates his Asian and American heritage. What should you cook for someone on a 1st date? What dish will help you lock in a relationship? And what makes food sexy? __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Issuu: Sign up for FREE or get 50% off a premium account with code ASIANBOSSGIRL at issuu.com/podcast __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: [email protected] __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices.
