Ep 58The Boy Next Door (2015) feat. Matt Donato
EGrab your first edition copy of The Iliad, because we're closing out our anniversary month by covering Rob Cohen's (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) The Boy Next Door, an erotic thriller that is neither erotic nor thrilling! Joining us for this riff-fest is noted The Boy Next Door defender (and fellow Bloody Disgusting columnist) Matt Donato, and he's brought along a raw chicken for all of us to share!Join us as we commend Lopez for using her own clothes to cut down on production costs, but lament how the film completely wastes Kristin Chenoweth (despite her awesome "Can I Speak to Your Manager?" haircut). Also on the docket: we try to figure out why people hate Lopez and why all of the male characters in the film going through crazy mood swings. Trace goes to bat for one of the film's deleted scenes, Joe is confused by the concept of a penis purse and Matt can't get over all of the references to The Wiz.Finally, we attempt to list off the multitude of Chekhov's items in the film (EpiPen, Engine, cookies, etc.).Questions? Ep 57All Cheerleaders Die (2013) feat. PRIMO the ALIEN
EAnniversary month continues as the boys head back to high school, bitches! Along with special guest PRIMO the ALIEN, we're digging into co-directors Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson's remake of their own film, which is itself a franchise non-starter (Part One, you say? Show us the receipts!)Despite a killer opening, this film certainly did not "blue our balls" with its mish-mash of tones, weird pacing and poor editing. Thankfully there's jokes to be made about butt plugs, vagina freezers and Trace's improv skills.Plus: is this film part of the Eli Roth dude bro school of lesbianic filmmaking, or is it subverting the male gaze and offering up a pro-queer reading? We're honestly not sure!Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 56Hostel: Part II (2007)
EThe boys are making a return trip to Slovakia to discuss a film that no one wanted to guest on! That's right, they're discussing Eli Roth's controversial and (dare they say it?) feminist sequel Hostel: Part II!Join them as they discuss the rapid decline of the torture porn sub-genre between 2006 and 2007, the accusations of misogyny lodged against the film, and Roth's progressive decision to make the protagonist of his sequel a lesbian (whom he doesn't objectify!) while casting out-and-proud lesbian Heather Matarazzo as the character who gets the film's most brutal death (in a scene that got the film banned in several countries). Also, Trace tries to come up with a synonym for the word "castration," Joe gives a brief oral history of the word "cunt" and they both try to figure out why Jordan Ladd needs so much sleep.Questions? Ep 55Scream 2 (1997)
EHi! No, we really mean it. Hi! After nearly a year of waiting, the time has come for Trace and Joe to dig into the best film in the Scream franchise and arguably the best horror sequel of all time. Join us as we praise the film's dedication to further developing its main trio, its willingness to kill off Randy and, of course, Laurie Metcalf's totally unhinged performance as Mrs. Loomis (or is it Ms. Loomis? Try to keep track of Joe's pronunciations). Also on deck: wisdom from Wes Craven's audio commentary, details from Kevin Williamson's original leaked script, and a plethora of line readings, including Trace performing several scores. Plus: deep dives into two of the best sequences in modern horror!Don't wait for video because this episode is (British accent) "a good one."Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 54Speed Dating: Round 2 (2020)
EHappy New Year, fellow Horror Queers! We are celebrating 2020 with a sequel to our very first episode: Speed Dating! That's right, the topic of discussion this week is....US. No - not the movie, like Joe, Trace and all of you. Oh, and we've got a fancy new opening theme to ring in the new year!Join us as we go over the results from the listener survey from back in November (it's more exciting than it sounds), including your favorite and least favorite episodes. We also announce the winner of the contest who will pick a film for us to cover in a few weeks! We'll tell you our favorite and least favorite episodes, the episode we wish got more love and share our first horror movie memory, among other things. Oh, and we've got things to say about that controversial (and somewhat awkward) live episode on A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge.Plus, we answer some of your questions, which means things are going to get personal (some of you really want to know about our sex lives). Ep 53American Horror Story: Asylum (2012) feat. Emily VanDerWerff
EJust in time for the last episode of the year before the holidays, the boys hit the time machine and travel back to Briarcliff Manor circa 1964 to party with the oppressed queers of American Horror Story: Asylum. Joining us for the fun is Vox's Emily VanDerWerff, who actually recapped the series back in 2012!The second season of the FX anthology series is basically a Stefon skit: it has EVERYTHING! Aliens, Nazis, serial killers, lesbians, and even sexy, possessed nuns. Plus, in the three episodes we're watching, Anne Frank (episodes 4-5) and a killer Santa (episode 8).We're digging into the Ryan Murphy-ness of it all with a debate about the quality of AHS, whether Murphy is a true queer ally, as well as how Emily came to love Sarah Paulson and why that terrible aversion therapy scene is so difficult to watch. Also: is this show suggesting that Ian McShane's Leigh Emerson became a killer Santa because he was gang-raped by five men?!Questions? Ep 52Black Christmas (2006) feat. Alex Wiggins
EJust in time for the 45th anniversary of Bob Clark's iconic 1974 original film and the release of its second remake, the Horror Queers are celebrating the holidays with some eye bolas masquerading as Christmas tree ornaments in Glen Morgan's 2006 remake of Black Christmas! Joining them for this festive event is Alex Wiggins, the Acquisitions Supervisor for World of Death, who shares his traumatic experience of a hate crime that intruded on his first viewing of the film.Join them as they dive deep into the Weinstein shenanigans that plagued the film (not to mention those absolutely insane post-production shoots meant exclusively for the trailer), the jaundice-y and incest-y backstory of the film's male killer and the odd decision to have the film's female killer be played by a male actor.Oh, and why can't Andrea Martin's Mrs. Mac find any presents underneath that goddamn tree? This Week's Game: Which group of sorority girls are more equipped to survive a murderous psychopath? Ep 51Blade: Trinity (2004)
ENow that Trace has officially recovered from our 50th episode festivities, it's time to deal with an escalating vampire threat in David S. Goyer's Blade: Trinity, the whimpering conclusion of the groundbreaking (original) Marvel superhero trilogy. On the docket: why is a film filled with comedians so painfully unfunny? We speculate about the origin of the feud between Goyer and star Wesley Snipes (hint: racism), and discuss the badly-aged homophobic dialogue, which is sadly common ground for mid-2000s action films. Plus: Ryan Reynolds and Dominic Purcell's bodies (obvs), as well as random connections to Scream 3, Charlie's Angels and The Matrix!Be sure to stick around to the end of this supersized episode as the boys tackle gayness, body dysmorphia and Hollywood's obsession with Adonis beefcakes. It all gets a bit confessional, but hopefully it's helpful.Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 50The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008) feat. Ari Drew
EThe Horror Queers are celebrating their 50th episode with a Very Special Episode discussing.....pedophilia? And The X-Files? If that sounds like a weird combination, it's because it is. Luckily, they have Trace's better half (i.e., husband) and X-Files stan Ari Drew helping them through this momentous occasion! What's the best way to reward your fans that have been watching your show for nine years? According to series creator Chris Carter, it's to release a completely standalone film that eschews the series' mythology in favor of trying to earn new viewers! Oh, and let's have very undeveloped and un-nuanced discussions about major issues like pedophilia, stem cell research and head-transplanted Frankenstein monsters that walk some murky areas on transgender issues.Oh, and Trace apologizes in advance for his incomprehensibility in the last half of the episode. He thought it would be a good idea to drink a very large glass of whiskey (on an empty stomach) during the recording. It wasn't. Ep 49Jawbreaker (1999)
EEverything is peachy fucking keen as the Horror Queers take a field trip to Reagan High to figure out the mystery behind Liz Purr and the mysterious jawbreaker lodged in her throat! In what is admittedly an unusual film to cover in a horror podcast, Joe and Trace grab their Big Sticks and dive into the legacy that Darren Stein's Jawbreaker has left behind. How did this critical and commercial failure become the cult phenomenon that it is? Did it really rip off Heathers? Or was it ripped off by Mean Girls? Does it really matter? Why is Rose McGowan so perfect? And what if it had been a horror film, as Stein originally intended?Want to be entered for a chance to win the opportunity to pick one of our 2020 episodes (to be released in the first quarter)? Ep 48Alien: Covenant (2017) feat. Drew Dietsch
EIt's time to hop aboard the Covenant and head over to Origae-6....oops! We mean this random mystery planet that didn't show up on any of our scans! But hey, it's probably fine, right? Joining us for our colonization mission is Drew Dietsch, co-host of the GenreVision and Fin Flicks podcasts! After kicking things off with a debate on who will work the hole and who will do the fingering, the trio dive into the long and convoluted history of how Prometheus led to Alien: Covenant. Why does it feel like two films? Why is the CGI so bad? Why can we not tell any of these characters apart? Why does the movie think we will feel bad about their deaths if their spouses do? We will try to answer these questions in what is admittedly a super-sized episode, but hey, at least it's pretty. And if there's one thing that's certain, it's that Ridley Scott needs to shut the fuck up. Ep 47Interview With The Vampire (1994)
EWith the start of November's cold weather, Trace and Joe head south to Mississippi to visit our favorite bickering gay couple: Louis and Lestat and their ADORABLE adopted daughter, Claudia. That's right, we're back in vampire territory as we tackle Neil Jordan's infamous adaptation of the iconic first novel in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles just in time for its 25th anniversary! This movie is super duper gay (for 1994). The boys ponder the film's weird development cycle, including bizarre casting decisions (Julian Sands? Cher?!), question whether Rice ruffled studio feathers and lament Pitt's snooze-inducing performance. Joe and Trace bat heads over Cruise, but both are head over heels for Kirsten Dunst, which inspires a lengthy diatribe about her lack of recognition! Also up for discussion: Trace's dislike of long hair on men, the "Britishness" of Stephen Rea, prostitute tits, Letterboxd reviews of the Theatre des Vampires, and the real reason that Louis is so appealing (a HUGE dick).Questions? Ep 46A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) LIVE! feat. Mark Patton, Robert Rusler & Kim Myers
EYou've asked and you've asked and you've asked! The boys are finally covering A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, but there's a catch: it's LIVE! As part of Fantastic Fest's queer horror sidebar (which included the Texas Premiere of the documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street and a drag performance by Peaches Christ), the boys were fortunate enough to discuss NOES 2 with the film's stars Mark Patton (Jesse), Robert Rusler (Grady) and Kim Myers (Lisa)! In a podcast first, this episode comes to you completely uncut (like all the best things in life). Delight in the fact that Patton calls Trace on his bullshit in the first 5 minutes of the recording and completely derails the intended plan for the episode (in a good way, though!)Also, Patton gives his thoughts on Wes Craven, Rusler reminisces about doing cocaine with Grace Jones, Myers kick-starts a rendition of "Happy Birthday to You" for Patton (because hey, this recording took place on his birthday!) and Joe keeps his cool throughout all of it.Questions? Ep 45Phantom of the Paradise (1974) feat. BJ Colangelo
EHappy Halloween, fellow Horror Queers! Here we are: the final week of our eight-week Camp Marathon! We're singing our hearts out, bathing in glitter and snorting just a *touch* of cocaine with Brian De Palma's musical rock opera horror film Phantom of the Paradise! So grab your plunger and hop on board for this wild and crazy ride.In what is a first-time watch for Trace, a second-time watch for Joe and a 4,987,523,496,084,237,698th-time watch for BJ, the trio celebrate the cult film's 45th anniversary and all things Beef (Gerrit Graham).Trace (wrongfully) questions the singing abilities of Jessica Harper, Joe discusses the upcoming documentary Phantom of Winnipeg and BJ connects the film to the 2001 masterpiece Josie and the Pussycats.Questions? EAs the boys near the end of their eight-week camp marathon, they make a return trip to the halls of Dark Castle Entertainment (see previous episode on Orphan) to check into the Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane. That's right, they're celebrating the 20th anniversary of William Malone's remake of House on Haunted Hill!Join them as they discuss a remake that's better than it has any right to be (even if it doesn't seem to know what a "house" is), praise the glorious diva perfection that is Famke Janssen and marvel at Ali Larter's ability to connect wires and turn on lights!Oh! They need some help settling a debate: what would one call the fate that befalls Schechter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Max Perlich) in the film?Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 43The People Under The Stairs (1991) feat. Carter Smith
EAs the Camp marathon barrels on, Trace and Joe are joined by director Carter Smith to tackle our SECOND Wes Craven film in six weeks. The vibe is a little more reverent this time as the trio discusses the origin story of Craven's twisted idea, why the gentrification storyline feels more relevant now than ever and how adept the late director is at balancing the film's mix of tones. It's not all serious, though! Trace goes gaga for Wendy Robie's Mommy, Carter and Joe talk leather looks and the trio disagrees on whether or not the relationship between the couple (brother/sister) is sexual. Ep 42The Perfection (2019)
EIn order to accommodate our hectic TIFF & Fantastic Fest schedules, enjoy this Patreon-exclusive discussion on one of our favorite films of the year: Netflix's The Perfection! Prepare yourself for a spoiler-filled discussion on an extremely queer, extremely unpredictable and extremely awesome film. There aren't really any words to describe it, so imagine the premise of Black Swan, Single White Female, Outbreak, Misery, Oldboy and The Handmaiden are all thrown in a blender. Then add the narrative surprises of films like Martyrs and Funny Games where you have no idea what kind of film you're watching. Ep 41I Know Who Killed Me (2007) feat. Anthony Hudson
EThe boys continue their camp marathon with one of their most celebrated films yet: LiLo's Razzie-winning, F CinemaScore-awarded, critical and commercial bomb I Know Who Killed Me!Is it Hitchcock? Is it De Palma? Is it giallo? Who can say?! Thankfully we have Gaylords of Darkness co-host Anthony Hudson here to help us unpack all of the stripper-y goodness.Trace walks us through the car wreck of Lohan’s career, Joe repeatedly mispronounces “Dina”, and the trio obsess over Jennifer Tilly’s possum character and how a Disney animated version of the film would play out.Plus: we try to unpack the symbolism of the film's signature blue/red colour scheme, chastise the film's apparently humourless set, and recast Ormond with Celine Dion. Also: Joe adds to his Amazon Christmas Wishlist and Trace tries out his impressions of both Lohan AND Katherine Heigl? We may have gone crazy...Questions? Comments? Snark? Joining us is Stephanie Crawford, the co-host of the Screamcast podcast! In this episode, we shower Darla (Tonie Perensky) with praise and label Leatherface the tortured drag queen that he is. Is the film ahead of its time? Or is it just stupid? You tell us!Join us as we ask the ultimate question: why does no one get killed with a chainsaw in a movie titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Ep 39Cursed (2005) feat. Tim O'Leary
EThe Horror Queers eight-week camp marathon continues as Joe and Trace journey to Hollywood (barely escaping a car wreck on Mulholland Drive) to visit the hippest new night club since Planet Hollywood: Tinsel. That's right, they're discussing Wes Craven's Cursed! Joining them is Tim O'Leary, creator of the upcoming queer web series DEMONHUNTR! They will need all the help they can get to figure out just what this cobbled-together Frankenstein's monster of a film is trying to do.In what seems to be an ongoing trend with these campy movies, the boys discuss the very troubled production for Cursed at length, and try to determine just what the fuck Bob Weinstein was thinking when he demanded the script be re-written when 90% of the film had already been shot.No one, save for the always reliable Judy Greer, is having any fun in this movie. Kevin Williamson's script reads as if he was trying to one-up Scream 3's Hollywood satire (he fails). Poor Christina Ricci is handed some of the worst dialogue you'll ever hear ("Everybody's cursed, Jimmy. It's called life.").But hey, it's not all bad! Topics for discussion include Milo Ventimiglia's homo-repressed bully Bo, a werewolf giving Christina Ricci the middle finger and the longest plot summary ever. Oh, and man butts and cock socks. Ep 38Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) feat. Alice Collins
EThe Horror Queers are getting a head start on Friday the 13th celebrations with a visit to Crystal Lake in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday! Joe and Trace are joined by fellow Bloody Disgusting columnist Alice Collins in an episode that might as well be called E! True Hollywood Story: Jason Goes to Hell. Together, they will try to do the impossible: make sense of a film that makes absolutely no sense.Topics up for discussion are little girls in pink dresses sticking a hot dog through a donut, queer leather-daddy shaving fetishes, sensual hand-stroking and crazy-impressive gore effects. In a surprising twist, Joe admits to loving the film (despite not being a fan of the franchise), Trace talks about how screenwriters Dean Lorey and Jay Huguely stole the plot of the film from a story he wrote in the first grade and Alice spills the tea on most of the film's production troubles.Oh! Did they mention that this episode starts off an eight-week marathon of campy horror films? Because it does! So be prepared for seven more weeks of unintentionally funny horror films, most of which have very, very troubled production histories.Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 37IT: Chapter One (2017) feat. Michael Roffman
EIn an episode almost as long as its source material, the boys kick off Stephen King week with a trip to Derry alongside resident expert Michael Roffman (Editor-In-Chief of Consequence of Sound and co-host of The Losers Club podcast).EVERYTHING is on the table: Coming of age narratives, bad CGI, the appeal of dancing clowns, as well as Derry and Pennywise as stand-ins for Reagan-era Conservatism. Also, a discussion of whether adults are the true villains, the most effective set pieces and an obligatory queer reading of Richie and Eddie.Throw in Michael's analysis of Ariana Grande's contribution to music, the group's analysis of why a wave of 90s nostalgia is long overdue, and Trace's passionate response to hysterical reactions on the Internet. Plus: the episode runs long because we also sneak in an extended comparison to Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark!Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 36The Loved Ones (2009) feat. Dirty Little Horror
EThe boys are having their first foursome as they discuss Sean Byrne's drill-happy 2009 film The Loved Ones with the hosts of Dirty Little Horror Podcast! Self-proclaimed Britney Spears enthusiast Charles Rockhill and resident Australian Christopher Downs crash Joe and Trace's party to weigh in on the film's queer icon (and completely cuckoo bananas psychopath), Lola (Robin McLeavy).Join the boys as they travel Down Under so that Chris can explain Australian concepts that are foreign to North Americans (P Plates, anyone?), Trace gets a lesson in consent and Joe defines cultural cringe and discusses the film's kitchen sink approach to storytelling. Ep 35Good Manners (2017)
EJoe and Trace travel to Brazil to check in on expectant mother Ana and her nanny/housekeeper Clara in Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas' dark fairytale festival fave. Trace finds a couple of surprisingly conservative readings regarding abortion and lesbianism in this pregnancy horror film. The pair discuss the film's critical reception and how that ties into the film's "two movies in one" structure, Joe tackles the film's subtle race critique and ribs Trace about the film's CGI and homage to Frankenstein.Plus: in one of the longest plot recaps in the show's history, Trace somehow finds a way to reference The Lizzie McGuire movie AGAIN and Joe butchers yet another round of actor names. Ep 34Tragedy Girls (2017) feat. Dani Ryan
EAfter so many months, the boys are ready to embrace facts: they are social media darlings and the world needs to know it! With Dani Ryan along for the ride, the trio "Like and Fave" Tyler MacIntyre's astute meta-comedy about two aspiring serial (or is it spree?) killers on the cusp of graduating high school with a body count.Up for discussion: Are the girls on equal footing? Are they in love with each other? And why do people dislike these girls? Also: Trace works on his transitions between segments, he and Dani are hot for Josh Hutcherson (and why everyone should be watching Hulu’s Future Man), and Joe elaborates on why Craig Robinson’s character doesn’t work for him.Oh, and the trio discuss the logistics of being "buttholed to death.”Questions? Ep 33Audition (1999)
EKiri Kiri Kiri! The boys are officially declaring August Femme Fatale Month, which means they'll be tackling a bunch of films with some killer ladies (aka Trace's favorite type of character)! First up is Asami Yamazaki in Takashi Miike's controversial 1999 film, Audition! That's right, it's another Japanese film, which means you can laugh along (or take a shot) every time Joe mispronounces a character's name!Join Joe and Trace as they discuss the misogynistic (douchebag protagonist, objectification of women) and feminist (taking down the patriarchy, Asami as an avenging angel) elements of the film, BDSM, the secret queer relationship that no one talks about and the beautiful gore that fills the film's final act. Finally, they take the film's revelatory flashback to task for not making any sense whatsoever!Oh, and Joe is somehow able to liken the film to Bring it On. Trigger Warning: The dog DOES die in this movie, but it's off-screen. You do see its corpse, though. This Week's Game: If forced to part ways with a body part, which body part would it be.Questions? Ep 32ParaNorman (2012) feat. Brenna Clarke Gray
EThe boys fall through the 3D printer as they tackle their very first stop-motion animated family film. Thankfully they have help from Brenna Clarke Gray, the co-host of Joe's other podcast - Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr, which focuses on Young Adult literature adaptations.Brenna's vast range of experiences (English professor, mother, former voice actor, lover of Hilary Duff and hater of horror films) provides no shortage of amusing stories and anecdotes as the trio unpack the film.Topics include an unexpected queer character, homages to classic horror films, sequences that made us tear up, ParaNorman's unexpected anti-police stance and LAIKA's lengthy production process. Ep 31Orphan (2009) feat. Sade Sellers
EJoe and Trace traverse the spooky halls of Dark Castle Entertainment to discuss Jaume Collet-Serra's (The Shallows, House of Wax) creepy-kid movie Orphan! Joining them on their tour is Sade Sellers, one of the co-hosts of the Afro Horror Podcast! Her expertise on black horror cinema proves crucial when the boys analyze Sister Abigail (C.C.H. Pounder)'s brutal death by hammer!Other topics on the table includes the film's obscenely long 123-minute runtime, Trace's thoughts on Taissa Farmiga's acting abilities (or lack thereof) and Joe's fight for deaf actors' rights. Also: Why is Peter Sarsgaard's character the absolute worst? Why doesn't Character Actress Margo Martindale believe anything Vera Farmiga says? And what is Asia Argento's secret connection to the film?Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 30In the Flesh (2013) feat. David Opie
EThe boys are jumping across the pond this week to meet up with journalist David Opie to discuss the first season series of Britain's queer zombie show In the Flesh! Feeling intimidated be a whole season series of TV? Never fear! Because it's British, it's only three episodes long! And it's available on Amazon Prime and Hulu!Join them as they discuss zombies as a metaphor for queerness and the absolute brilliance of Emily Bevan's rebellious Amy. Plus, they condemn the 2016 film The Cure for completely ripping off In the Flesh's premise. And in one of their more bizarre tangents: a debate over baked goods!Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 29Scream: Resurrection (2019)
ESPOILER ALERT: We are spoiling the entire six episodes, but as Joe says in the intro, it is SO BAD that we don't recommend anyone watch. Just listen to us instead. In this special episode, the boys swing by Atlanta to check the latest TV iteration of Ghostface and the Scream franchise. Alas the "Deadfast Club" proves to be as uninspired as their attempts at metatextuality. This series has virtually nothing to offer, only bad writing, bad acting, terrible pacing, and lacklustre kills. Plus: the killer reveal is one of the most offensive insults to horror fans in quite some time. This Week's Game: Where does the Scream franchise go from here?If you like what you hear, please support the boys on Patreon.Questions? Ep 28Lake Placid (1999) feat. Brian Particelli
EFor the final entry in the Summer of Franchises, the boys grab Brian Particelli for a camping weekend at Black Lake. There they discover misogyny, bears and a profane Betty White…because they are firmly ensconced in a rom-com masquerading as a creature feature, written by none other than David E. Kelley. The boys attempt to break down the comedy to scares ratio (1:0), play the Hollywood spouse game (because Brian knows EVERYTHING) and Joe even tries out a few bad impersonations. Also on the menu: a queer reading of Hector & Hank, a deep appreciation of Bridget Fonda aka “Willie”, swapping Pullman for Paxton and an inability to keep any of the characters’ names straight. This Week's Game: 2 rounds! Ep 27Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995) feat. Sarah-Tai Black
EHello Kiddies! The Horror Queers are joined by Tales from the Crypt expert Sarah-Tai Black to discuss the booby-filled 1995 banger Demon Knight! In what may be their most tangent-filled episode yet, they not only code Billy Zane's Collector as gay and Jada Pinkett's Jeryline (a name that no character pronounces the same way) as a "soft butch" lesbian, but they also proclaim the queer icon status of the Crypt Keeper!Trace tries to decipher the rules of the demons (they're so contradictory!). Sarah-Tai gets a Bible study lesson. And Joe is dumbfounded by Sarah-Tai's story of how Alan Cumming once bullied her at a roller rink (and a thong-clad Anna Paquin just stood there and let it happen).Lastly, Joe cribs a lot of his supposed "knowledge" of Demon Knight from this wonderful article written by Stephanie Crawford. Ep 26Ginger Snaps (2000) feat. Ariel Fisher
EIt’s a maple leaf takeover! Just in time for Canada Day, Joe stacks the pod with both a Canadian film and a Canadian guest, Ariel Fisher, for another gang-up on Trace. The trio venture into the wilds of Toronto suburbia for a discussion of lycanthropy, the “horrors” of menstruation and how Katharine Isabelle can help facilitate the coming out process. Also up for grabs: Joe and Trace’s inability to do basic math, a discussion of feminine hygiene products, the struggles John Fawcett's production faced due to Columbine, and Trace’s true feelings about Canada.Plus - naturally - a discussion of werewolf transformations that devolves into the usual bathroom humor that you’ve come to expect. At least Ariel is around to class up the joint!Weekly Game: the trio pitch a quintessential (body) horror film that captures the experience of being in your 20s.Questions? Comments? Snark? EIn celebration of the second week of the Summer of Franchises, Joe, Trace and special guest Chris Eggertsen are headed to Romania…er…”Hollywood” to check out the fifth Chucky film.Chris and Joe gang up on Trace in a heated argument about what constitutes the “Big” horror franchises; they discuss out and proud gay director Don Mancini’s role shepherding the franchise for 30+ years, and why Jennifer Tilly’s autobiography should be called “Gaslighting.”Also on the table: pronunciations of “Redman,” a supersized overview of S Club 7’s history and, naturally, a detailed discussion of the titular “seed”…in all of its various forms.Weekly Game: the boys speculate which celebrity Chucky would murder.Questions? NOS4A2 (Patreon Clip)
trailerEWe're hopping in a 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith and driving to Christmasland so that we can cover the first three episodes of AMC's underwhelming adaptation of Joe Hill's (aka Stephen King's son) exceptional novel NOS4A2 (that's pronounced "nosferatu" for the uninitiated). Why would you stretch 100 of the novel's 700 pages into a 10-episode prequel season? Does anyone care about Vic (Ashleigh Cummings) and her shitty parents? No? That's pretty bad when she's supposed to be the protagonist of the show! It's not all bad, though. Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto) is proving to be a formidable foe and a unique Hocus Pocus-y villain. The pointy-toothed demon children are suitable creepy. And expect lots of comparisons to the book from Trace and a few "I didn't read the book so I don't care" reactions from Joe!Will this show get better as the season goes on? Ep 24Final Destination (2000) feat. Terry Mesnard
EOur Summer of Franchises begins by knocking on Death's door with the 2000 pseudo-slasher Final Destination! Joined by Gayly Dreadful's Terry Mesnard, the boys look at the film that boasts a queer screenwriter (Jeffrey Reddick) and several gruesome Rube Goldberg-y deaths (and one surprise bus attack).Join them as they debate the ridiculousness of the name "Clear Rivers," the fact that the FBI agents are the worst and why straight guys like to poop together (seriously, why is this movie so poop-obsessed?).Is a queer screenwriter not queer enough for you?
