Ep 88What Keeps You Alive (2018)

E

We're heading to a cabin in the beautiful woods of Muskoka, Ontario to celebrate the anniversary of the two lovely ladies at the center of Colin Minihan's 2018 thriller What Keeps You Alive! After discussing the implications of the film changing the protagonists of the original script (a heterosexual couple) to a lesbian couple, we'll then delve into the film's only real acknowledgement of the struggles of being gay (in a sequence that is quite personal to Joe). Yet we can't deny that the film has quite a few insightful things to say about relationships, especially its emphasis on the importance of communication (ya know, so you're not blindsided by the fact that your spouse is actually a psychopath). That it's anchored by two stellar lead performances doesn't hurt, either.Plus, we'll (rightly) laud the film's memorable rowboat set piece (yes, really), gush over the blacklight-lit montage that cleverly uses Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", and feel equally frustrated with the film's protracted third act.Questions? Ep 87Blumhouse's Fantasy Island (2020)

E

Since we're in the middle of "Vacation Month," we're taking a vacation! Enjoy this Patreon-exclusive (well, not anymore) episode that we recorded back in February for our loyal Patrons. Congrats, all you non-Patrons. Here's a taste of what life is like on the wild side.Prep your boring, inane (sex?) fantasies, because we are en route to Blumhouse's Fantasy Island. This is the second Blumhouse production in as many months to feature pretty people battling villains with black goo coming out of their eyes; it's also the second feature in a row from writer/director Jeff Wadlow to feature a gay asian character, so someone's got a fetish.Up for discussion: Trace thinks this film is entertaining and stupid, while Joe thinks it is lazy and boring. We both agree, however, that the twist makes NO SENSE. Of course neither does the island's geography, or the number of characters, or its resolution. Oh, and there's the fun implications of suggesting being bullied turns you into a stalker/killer. Thankfully we have goddesses Maggie Q and Lucy Hale (plus everyone's favorite lovable asshole, Ryan Hansen) to keep us entertained as we wade through this nearly 2-hour train wreck. Questions? Ep 86Island of Death (1976)

E

Vacation Month continues with a trip to beautiful - and exceedingly queer - Mykonos and Nico Mastorakis' notorious exploitation/video nasty film, Island of Death. This is the Stefon of horror films because it has EVERYTHING: bestiality, incest, targeted homophobic violence, misogyny, rape and so much more (please pay attention to the content warning!)After the film's lengthy production history and categorization in the UK's notorious list of video nasties (thanks for the background info, Anya Stanley!), we compare our readings of the film. Trace says it's merely shock value while Joe argues it's a comedy about religious hypocrisy (Mastorakis himself would say it's nothing more than an opportunity to make money!)Plus: comparisons to Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, Haneke, and Last House on the Left; Trace's forgetful history with onscreen bestiality; and logistical advice for water sports. Finally, we make a special request for Greek listeners: is your name Nico and did you work on this film?Anya's Doin' The Nasties column: https://www.anyawrites.com/columnQuestions? Comments? Snark? Micro Queers: Instinct (2018)

bonusE

We're trying something new and exciting! This weekly "micro" spin-off of Horror Queers will examine queer horror shorts in an effort to amplify the work of talented filmmakers who may not yet have made a feature film. The sole criteria: the shorts will always be queer or made by queer directors and they will always be freely available for public consumption. To kick things off, we're starting with Brazilian genre director Maria Alice Arida's film Instinct (click to view the short), which chronicles the dangerous attraction between older gallery owner Isabelle and provocative new performance artist Camila. Ep 85The Descent (2005)

E

Pack your climbing gear because we're headed to the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to go caving with the ladies (er....chicks with picks) of Neil Marshall's 2005 masterpiece The Descent on its 15th anniversary! How is a movie this scary when the monsters don't even appear until an hour into the film?Join us as we....um....descend into a discussion of why Juno (Natalie Mendoza) is a compelling character in spite of all of her mistakes (thanks, Joe!). We'll also investigate the potential queerness of Beth (Alex Reid) and Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) and choose between the UK and US endings of the film (spoiler alert: it's an easy choice). Also does The Descent feature the most tense scene in cinema history?Plus, an educational TED talk about the differences between claustrophobia and cleithrophobia. Why can't Trace stop bringing up the atrocious 2009 sequel? What is a dealbreaker movie and why do both of us consider The Descent to be one? And how do you give a lemon an orgasm?Questions? Ep 84Fright Night (1985) feat. Peaches Christ

E

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of quintessential queer horror film Fright Night, the boys, along with special guest (and FN super fan) Peaches Christ, head to the suburbs along with our hunky live-in-carpenter, our collection of knit sweaters and an entire wall full of clocks.Things get personal as Peaches shares her experience of working with Stephen Geoffreys, Joe confesses that the Tom Holland film is the genesis of his journey into queer horror and Trace discloses why Evil Ed's story arc made such an impact on him as a young gay teen. Expect a lot of conversation about how vital Ed's death scene is to the film's success and how rare it is in horror. It's not all serious though! Trace finally acknowledges that costumes in movies exist; Joe delivers a pornographic ode to Chris Sarandon's sweaters; and Peaches shares gossip about Vincent Price "straight" from the mouth of none other than Elvira herself! Plus: the film's legacy as the other queer horror film of 1985, celebrating Amanda Bearse as a lesbian icon (with extended discussion on Married...with Children) and a conspiracy theory about how much Kevin Williamson must have loved this film.Questions? Ep 83The Old Dark House (1932) feat. Kate Graham

E

Pack your umbrella because we're braving bucketfuls of rain in the Welsh countryside as we make our way to James Whale's 1932 film The Old Dark House! Joining us for a threesome is Kate Graham, the co-host of the Stop! Horror Time! podcast.Join us as we enter the House Femm and meet all of its kooky queer characters and sit down for a lovely dinner of roast beef and potatoes. Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because it won't be long before the mute butler Morgan (Boris Karloff) breaks into the liquor cabinet, and that's never a fun time! We'll discuss Whale's important place in the annals of queer horror, laugh at his spoofing of heterosexuality (a marriage proposal within 12 hours of meeting? C'mon!) and play 'I Spy' with all of the secret queer aspects Whale had to sneak into the film.Plus, Joe lauds the film's secret third-act villain who is also a pyromaniac (or...flaming?), Trace makes an attempt to scat and Kate educates us all on the reasoning behind the gender-bending patriarch of the Femm family.Questions? E

We're traveling to a breezy lakeside in Vermont to check in with recent empty-nester Michelle Pfeiffer and her totally not-a-murderer husband Harrison Ford in Robert Zemeckis' 'What Lies Beneath', which turns 20 this week!Join us as we both marvel at Zemeckis' fantastic (if overlong) homage to Hitchcock ('Rear Window'? Ep 81May (2002) feat. Katie Rife

E

After multiple requests, the time has finally come to crack the glass and dive deep into the sad, introverted, homicidal world of May, Lucky McKee's 2002 feature directorial debut, starring UBER talented actress Angela Bettis.Along for the ride is The AV Club's Katie Rife, who joins the boys to dissect Anna Faris' predatory lesbian Polly, Jeremy Sisto's fuck boy Adam (and his Horror Bro short film) and poor May, who we are equally drawn to and horrified by.Up for discussion: why Trace hates the word "gams", melons as a lesbian seduction tactic, Rian Johnson's not-so-secret obsession with the film, speculation about which character is a McKee stand-in and debate about whether we give May a pass because she's female (thanks BJ Colangelo!). Also, Katie needs to investigate her vet sister's basement for bodies. Finally, in the spirit of the film's obsession with patching and stitching things together, please accept our apologies for the occasional echo-y sound as this episode required more editing than a Frankenstein best friend named Amy.Questions? Ep 80I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) feat. Ari Drew

E

Happy 4th of July, Julie! We're celebrating the holiday (and Canada Day....) in Southport, North Carolina to discuss the seminal post-Scream slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Joining us is Trace's husband, Ari Drew, who is getting a redo after Trace drunkenly botched his previous guest appearance on The X-Files: I Want to Believe. After Ari tells us how he tricked a bunch of straight dudes into seeing IKWYDLS back in 1997, we all discuss the film's unearned reputation as a "Scream rip-off" before praising it for being one of the most mature films of the slasher genre. Not only does it choose to focus on characters over kills (something that probably pissed off a lot of people looking for a traditional slasher), but it offers so many poignant moments between Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar). We'll also tackle the film's origins as an (extremely loose) adaptation of a Lois Duncan novel and analyze its place in slasher history as an ode to '80s slashers with a Scream aesthetic mixed in (it's the best of both decades!).Plus, getting boned up over long slashers, Jennifer Love Huge Tits, Ray "Not A Character" Bronson and Ryan "Do Me Daddy" Phillippe. Oh! And you don't think we'd spend two hours discussing this film without devoting an entire segment to Gellar's epic chase scene, do you?And if you want even more I Know What You Did Last Summer shenanigans, subscribe to the Final Girl tier on our Patreon to gain access to over 50 hours of bonus content, including a brand new audio commentary on I Still Know What You Did Last Summer!Questions? Ep 79The Craft (1996) feat. Valeska Griffiths

E

For our final episode of Pride Month, we're calling the corners and invoking the spirit of Manon. That's right: it's time to discuss Andrew Fleming's 1996 ode to female friendships and the dangers of all-consuming power.Joining the boys is Joe's horror bestie, Valeska Griffiths, who unpacks why this film is so important for female and/or queer horror fans. We discuss the film's nostalgic value, its pop culture impact, and question the way race and sexual assault is handled (Christine Taylor deserved worse!). This leads to speculation about the forthcoming remake, the need for female horror creatives and the distinction between "bitchy" and "mean" girls.Plus: wise cracks about snake wranglers, Trace's affinity for Charmed, Hot Topic, and whether Robin Tunney looks better bald or in a green wig.Questions? Ep 78Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) feat. FriGay the 13th

E

Pride month continues with a queer positive slasher film that most people have never seen! We're joined by fellow queer podcasters Andrew and Matty, aka FriGay the 13th, to unpack the delirious madness of Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (aka Night Warning). This exploitation/video nasty tends to make waves for Susan Tyell's incestuous relationship with her twinky son, but the real topic here is the film's true villain: the homophobic cop who hates gays.In addition to its bombastic Final Destination 2 opening car crash and William Asher's workmanlike direction, the group debates Tyrell's artistic choices, sports in slashers, and twinks vs daddies. Plus: Andrew is obsessed with Julie the indestructible girlfriend, and Trace wonders who has a machete lying around the house? Also: do vaginas have flaps like boxes? Finally, and most significantly, a serious talk about how Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker reflects real life tensions between the queer community and the police and how the film's odd double release pattern put it on opposite sides of the AIDS epidemic.Reading: Let's Scare Bryan to Death: Butcher, Baker, Nightmare MakerQuestions? Ep 77Lord of Illusions (1995)

E

Continuing our Pride Month marathon, we're checking in with Clive Barker's third (and final) directorial effort 'Lord of Illusions', which features the first (and only) live-action appearance of Barker's recurring protagonist Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula).Topics up for discussion include: forehead buttholes, studio interference leading to a Director's Cut, mid-'90s special effects, magic vs. illusion and queer henchman Butterfield's Visible Penis Line. Also, Trace lauds everything cult-related in the film, but struggles with all of the noir elements. Joe gushes over all things Famke Janssen. Ep 76Hellbent (2004)/Killer Unicorn (2018) feat. Sam Wineman

E

To kick off Pride Month, we're hosting a double feature tracing the journey of the all-too-rare queer slasher film (things sure have changed in the last 15 years!). The two films up for discussion? 2004's 'Hellbent' and 2018's 'Killer Unicorn'. Joining us is Sam Wineman, the director of Shudder's upcoming queer horror documentary!First up, we're heading to Los Angeles to attend the West Hollywood Halloween Carnival in Paul Etheredge's 'Hellbent'. After marvelling at the fact that this film was even able to get made, we'll discuss the film's lengthy production, portrayals of various queer archetypes and how each of us sought out queer media in the early 2000s.Next, we're walking the streets of Brooklyn to party it up at the Annual Enema Party (because that's a thing) in Drew Bolton's 'Killer Unicorn'. We'll discuss the in-your-face queerness of the film, which is both good (a queer love scene, poppers representation and some very, very queer-themed deaths) and bad (drug abuse stereotypes, mean characters and an ill-advised & mishandled rape subplot). It's going to be a party to die for, y'all!Questions? Ep 74Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 (1987) feat. Leigh Monson

E

Grab your tiara, your emerald gown and your murder cape because it's prom season and the campaign to crown a Queen is vicious! Mary Lou Maloney is slaying the competition, bedding all of the boys and leaving her mark on the confessional wall...and on the stage. Joining the boys to discuss this Canadian slasher gem is Leigh Monson, who helps to unpack why Mary Lou is both a sex positive queer icon and a villain to root for.Perhaps we're possessed by the spirit of Mary Lou, but things get a little raunchy: we talk about the queer connotations of the naked shower sequence, Principal Billy's son getting pegged, a sexy pony ride, and kissing your Daddy. Oh and Trace yearns for a clean glory hole experience...Plus: a running gag about the film's long legacy on future horror films, Leigh's fondness for humping cut-outs, a lesson on Canadian film funding by Joe and why Trace is totally an Ursula.Questions? Ep 73Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) feat. Haleigh Foutch

E

Ruh roh! In anticipation of Scoob! being released this weekend, we're having our first Horror Queers double feature with 1998's classic animated film Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island and its, like, totally meta 2019 sequel Scooby Doo! Return to Zombie Island. Joining us for this venture is Collider's Haleigh Foutch, who joins Trace in being a fellow Scooby-head (as opposed to Joe, who is decidedly not).Join us as we discuss all things Scooby-Doo, from its status as a form of gateway horror for a certain generation of horror fans to the various forms of media it's influenced in its 50-year(!) run (see: Buffy the Vampire Slayer). We'll trace the franchise from its the low period in the early '90s to its resurgence on Cartoon Network to its re-validation with the release of Zombie Island (and yes, we'll make plenty of comparisons to the Scream franchise).Plus: questionable French accents (sorry, Adrienne Barbeau), lesbian cat creatures, Velma porn and a Joe Bob vs. Elvira debate. Finally, why does Fred want to have sex with the Mystery Machine? Your guess is as good as ours!Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 72Grace (2009) feat. Anya Stanley

E

Happy Mother's Day, everyone! We're celebrating this sacred holiday with a discussion of booby horror and queer baby mama drama in Paul Solet's Grace! Joining us for the discussion is journalist and mother Anya Stanley, who brings some much-needed maternal instincts to the discussion. Fair warning, though: this is not a film to watch if you're already pregnant..Join us as we discuss the greatness that is the supremely underrated Jordan Ladd, as well as admire Solet's use of sound design and lighting in the film. Plus, is the evil mother-in-law an example of unintentional camp? You tell us!Also on the docket: a debate on how to pronounce the word "midwifery," water births, Trace's sore left nipple and learning to flambé while cooking liver and onions!Questions? Comments? Ep 71A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)

E

Just in time for its tenth anniversary, the boys head to Elm Street to revisit Platinum Dunes’ worst remake. This film is a disaster for several reasons: from its condensed production timeline to its unmemorable set pieces to its extremely miscast leading lady, Snoozey Mara (credit the Halloweenies podcast for that gem!).What's extra frustrating is how likable the rest of the cast is! Jackie Earle Haley is trying his darnedest to bring something new to Freddy Krueger while poor Thomas Dekker (our queer connection) only gets to play angry and Katie Cassidy should have been the Final Girl. Then there's Kyle Gallner, who not only rocks a speedo, but is forced to carry the entire back half of the film by himself! We dig into all of the dirt, including first time feature writer Eric Heisserer's candid complaints about changes to the screenplay, the three big set pieces that were shot, then excised and aren't included in the Blu special features and, finally, the film's extremely poor handling of its child molestation storyline, which is never given the attention or care that such a delicate topic demands.Questions? Ep 70Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) feat. Tyler Jensen & Roman Chimienti

E

We're joining forces with Tyler Jensen and Roman Chimienti, the directors of the superb queer documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, in Phoenix Arizona (and later Orange Country, California) to discuss the "Other Side" in the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side! After spilling the tea on last year's live episode on A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, we dive into Brian Gibson's sequel that at least tries to do something different (as opposed to repeating the most successful parts of the original film). Is it wholly successful? That matter is up for debate, as the film holds a special place in Roman's heart, while it was a first-time viewing for us.Join us as we discuss Reverend Henry Kane (a bisexual Julian Beck), the villain that terrified a generation of children. Also up for discussion are the diminished roles of Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) and Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein), the laughable effects of the 3-minute-long climax in the titular Other Side and what it means to live a "normal" life. It's not all bad, though! We admire the chemistry and charisma of the film's co-leads Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, the superb practical effects (that vomit monster!) and the historical importance of the film's release during the Night Stalker's reign of terror.Questions? Comments? Ep 69Reefer Madness (2005)

E

Happy 4/20, y'all! We're celebrating with a pack of giggle sticks, a chocolate brownie-scented DVD box and a movie musical! That's right, we're discussing the TV film adaptation of the stage musical adaptation of the 1936 propaganda film: Reefer Madness! Just hope we don't turn into cannibalistic murderers like some of the people in this movie. Before we take a hit, we go into our own personal histories with marijuana and discuss the circumstances that led to the original (and absolutely terrible) 1936 film. From there, it's a one-way trip to toke town which inspires an impromptu Alexis Schitt impersonation from Joe and an in-depth discussion of....the movie Burlesque? We quickly course-correct and praise the great Alan Cumming (who portrays no less than three characters in the film), Ana Gasteyer (Trace's choice for film MVP), Amy Spanger (Joe's choice for film MVP), a dominatrix Kristen Bell, a cameo-ing Neve Campbell, a creepy Steven Weber and Christian (brother of Neve) Campbell, aka the Human Dimple.Warning for the faint of heart: this film is patently offensive to everyone, so no PC police here! We've got jokes about race, rape, queerness, women, men and, of course, drugs (would that it have been mere heroin!). Oh, and don't forget about blasphemy: we've also got Alan Cumming as goat Satan, Jesus singing about weed and stripper angels. And watch out for those singing carnivorous clams! And if you really want to have some fun, take a drink (or a hit) every time Trace says he loves something about the movie.Questions? Comments? Snark? Interview: Eric Charmelo on Ringer & The Perfection

bonusE

You didn't think we would let the co-creator/showrunner of The CW's Ringer (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as twins!) and the co-writer of The Perfection (one of our absolute favorite films of last year) go without spilling the tea, did you?!Eric was kind enough to chat with us a little longer about the behind the scenes drama that allowed Ringer to embrace its true campy potential ~5-6 episodes in, what the original architecture of the show was and what would have happened in seasons two AND three if it had of been renewed! Then, when we switch over to The Perfection, Eric tells us where the film was originally set and why that first act was moved to China, how he, co-writer Nicole Synder and director Richard Shepard broke the film's complicated narrative, the pros and cons of going to Netflix and how they landed Steven Weber. E

Grab your clear raincoat, your overnight bag and your reservation at Dorsia! The boys, along with special guest Eric Charmelo (co-creator/showrunner of The CW's Ringer and co-screenwriter of The Perfection) time travel back to the 80s to revisit Mary Harron's masterful satire of Wall Street capitalism and sociopathy just in time for its 20th anniversary. The threesome collectively lose our memory recall (who is the star of this movie? What is the name of the film Bale and Mathis co-starred in later? What is Eric's social media handle?), but find plenty of praise for Bale, Witherspoon, the soundtrack and Harron's writing/direction. Also: debates about why certain characters survive, whether Bateman is homophobic (or just a control freak) and a book vs film comparison of the notorious threesome murder sequence.Plus: Rabbit hole tangents about food porn, the benefits of charcoal, gunkata and why you shouldn’t use the word “asshole” during sex.Questions? E

Who's ready for a few good pranks? The boys hit the Canadian West Coast for a weekend retreat at the palatial island home of their Vassar friend, Muffy St. John , but the weekend doesn't go quite as planned. There are secret abortion cassettes, utterly unfathomable sex positions and some of the worst 80s fashion we've ever seen. Oh...and murder. There's something unusual about this late entry slasher and it's not just that actor Griffin O'Neal "Rebecca Gayhearted" (or is it "Brandied"?) a member of the Coppola family. There's also a secret alternative ending, a subtle queer read and no shortage of logistical questions about the plot. Ep 66Vamp (1986) feat. Cecil Baldwin

E

We're heading over to New York City (or is it Los Angeles?) to party it up with a vampiric Grace Jones in Richard Wenk's 1986 comedy horror film Vamp! Riding shotgun is Cecil Baldwin, the narrator of Welcome to Night Vale!Join us as Cecil educates us on the goings-on of 1980s New York City, which is not actually filled with green and magenta lighting. We finally make our way to the emptiest strip club ever: the aptly named "After Dark Club". While there, we chat with Dedee Pfeiffer (sister of Michelle) before being seduced by a Kabuki'd out Grace Jones and her hypnotic performance art striptease. We also try to label all of the films Vamp references/inspires (Adventures in Babysitting, The Warriors, Fright Night, etc.), while commending the film for not making Gedde Watanabe's Duncan a racist stereotype (even if the movie does forget about him after the first act).Oh, and does Trace make yet another Lizzie McGuire connection? E

In their attempt at social distancing, the boys abandon the city and head deep into the woods. Along for the ride is Girls, Guts & Giallo's Annie Rose Malamet, who schools the boys on all things punk (and Lisa Frank) so that they can understand the annoying teens in Jenn Wexler's The Ranger. Are you ready for two films in one? On one hand, we've got an 80s slasher throwback featuring punks vs authoritarians. On the other hand, we've got a (secret?) rape/revenge with lead character Chelsea (Chloë Levine) potentially being abused by her uncle (veteran director Larry Fessenden) or the titular Ranger...or both.Up for discussion: what drug are these kids doing? What's up with the wolf symbolism? Why does the film's pacing suffer when the kills begin? And why doesn't the film lean harder into punk? Finally: Trace opens up about an unsettling encounter tied to the film that initiates a frank discussion about film festival reviews, as well as the relationship between directors, critics and the production of art.Questions? Ep 64Jason X (2002)

E

Happy (early) Friday the 13th, y'all! We're celebrating the holiday with a return trip to space (following our episode on Hellraiser: Bloodline last month) with a festive viewing of the much-maligned Jason X.Join us as we say hello to a cameo-ing David Cronenberg before traveling 4.55 centuries into the future to board the vessel Grendel. While aboard, we will lament the outlawing of hockey in 2024, ponder the "Microsoft Conflict" and cheer on Janessa (Melyssa Ade) as she earns some sextra credit by employing some some super tame nipple play. Also, why is UberJason only in the last 14 minutes of this 87-minute movie? Why are the sets of this $11 million-budgeted movie derivative of the 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century? Did Harry Manfredini rip off John Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark score for his "Birth of the UberJason" track? And will Trace find yet another way to bring up The Lizzie McGuire Movie? (The answer is yes.)But hey, it's not all bad! There's still that super clever VR sequence in the third act, Lisa Ryder's delightfully kooky android KM-14 and a truly awesome kill involving liquid nitrogen and a scantily clad scientist's head (seriously, why are all of these female scientists baring their stomachs?).Questions? Ep 62Zombeavers (2014)

E

In honor of Trace's 31st birthday, we're closing out February with a discussion of one of his favorite movies: Zombeavers! That's right, a movie that gifts us John Mayer in his feature film debut and one of the most salacious games of "Would You Rather" ever committed to film sends Trace into a non-stop flurry of giggle fits throughout the entire episode. Join us as we discuss this 77-minute-long film that features a plethora of beaver puns, Millennials scissoring each other to Lady Gaga, were-zombeaver people (and bears) and some very impressive zombeaver puppets. It's about as ridiculous (and entertaining!) as it sounds. Also up for discussion: severe penile trauma, a crazy faux Oscar campaign, a Frank Sinatra-style theme song and a delightful animated opening credits sequence!Look, this should be a one-joke movie that doesn't work, but it's actually a film with lots of jokes and it does work! That this admittedly juvenile film is non-homophobic and has equal amounts of nudity between its male and female characters is just an added bonus! E

You asked for it (well, at least one of you did), and so we are finally covering the listeners' choice that was selected from our 2019 Listener Survey! That's right, we're discussing Pascal Laugier's controversial 2008 film Martyrs (aka the most anti-spoiler film ever made)! Big thanks to listener Brian Conmy for helping us pull the trigger on covering this masterful and deeply upsetting film.Major trigger warnings for anyone who has never seen Martyrs, because this film is one of the most disturbing films ever made. That's not hyperbole! Join us as we discuss what might be the most extreme example of white privilege ever put on screen (seriously, these people are so rich that they seemingly have all the time in the world to torture young women just so they can find out what happens after we die) and assign a few different readings to the film, including a very positive queer reading that might turn a few people around on it.We'll also try to answer questions that have followed the film since its 2008 release, including but not limited to: Is it torture porn? Is it misogynistic? Does it have a purpose? Why would someone make this endurance test of a film?Oh! And as an added bonus, both of us secretly watched the 2015 American remake without telling the other one, so we spend a little bit of time comparing the two films (hint: the original is better).Lastly, here are all of the articles we reference in the episode: The New Extremism in Cinema: From France to Europe (eds: Tanya Horeck & Tina Kendall) Films of the New French Extremity: Visceral Horror and National Identity by Alex West Martyrs: Evoking France’s Cinematic and Historical Past by Daniel Totaro Martyrs by Scott Tobias The Philosophy of ‘Martyrs’: Transcendence in Torture by Andrew Couzens Keep Doubting: Why Martyrs is One of Horror's Most Biting Critiques on Systems of Violence and Oppression by Angi Martyrs (2008): Movie Plot Ending Explained at ThisBarry.com Questions? Ep 60Single White Female (1992) feat. Double A Horror Highway

We're kicking off Women in Horror Month with a confusing and frankly boring erotic thriller about a threatening lesbian roommate, written by a gay man, for straight male audiences. Joining us for the ride are the two Amys (Kasio and Ketchum) of Double A Horror Highway, who help to unpack the film's mushroom cut hairstyles, portable computing devices and why neither Bridget Fonda or Jennifer Jason Leigh's characters own any furniture. Also up for discussion: un-sexy sex clubs, showing (but not using) the incinerator, whether Heddy is a true lesbian or mentally ill (or a mentally ill lesbian) and speculation about why the film tries to redeem every terrible character, including the rapist played by Stephen Tobolowsky! So little of Single White Female makes sense that we struggled to retain even the most basic plot points. Anniversary month is dead! Long live Birthday month! To get the ball rolling, Joe has selected a terrible (read: great) film from his beloved Hellraiser franchise. Of course he opted for the fourth film - the one in space! - directed by none other than fake DGA moniker Alan Smithee (actually FX master Kevin Yagher).Folks, we have yet another super complicated production timeline, including a rumoured 112 min cut, multiple directors and reshoots that completely alter the film's meaning. And yet...there's still so much fascinating stuff mixed in with the hot garbage, including a compelling battle of the sexes, a bizarre (immediately discarded) trans mention and an actress that Trace is CONVINCED is secretly Noomi Rapace.
