Ep 102Krampus (2015) feat. Bobby Torrez

E

We're kicking off the holiday season by hunkering down in a snow globe with YouTube star Bobby Torrez and a screening of Michael Dougherty's Krampus (2015).The film has an all-star cast (Toni Collette! Adam Scott! Allison Tolman! David Koechner!), but doesn't manage to nail its balance of tones like Trick 'r Treat did. Thankfully the film has a great score (suck it Joe!) and a fantastically unnerving jack in the box named Der Klown, who Trace cannot stop jizzing over. Plus: Krampus as an LGBT icon, why the holidays are hard for queers, and lesbian-coded twins.Questions? Comments? Snark? Ep 100Cruising (1980) feat. Andrew Scahill

E

Hold onto your hips and lips because for our 100th episode, we're going Cruising! Along for the *ahem* ride, is film professor Andrew Scahill, who guides us through an academic deep dive of the 1980 William Friedkin film, which has been one of our most requested titles since we started Horror Queers! There's LOTS to talk about: the heavily protested production, the depiction of the gay community, the critique of the police, and the frank depiction of sex and community. Throw in the film's historical legacy and its reappraisal through a contemporary lens and there's plenty to sink our teeth into.Plus: Pacino's look of gay panic, The Velvet Rage, and a Rebecca/Cruising porn parody! Joining us is Bloody Disgusting's own Dax Ebaben!Join us as we discuss the Stephen King-approved source material (aka one of the scariest novels of the 21st century) and how it translates to the screen in the Ben Stiller(!)-produced film that most critics compared unfavorably to Little Shop of Horrors (those critics are dumb).Plus, sad handjobs, impromptu amputations, questionable German accents (sorry, Joe Anderson) and all the praise for Laura Ramsey's tragic performance.Source: "10 Years Later, ‘The Ruins’ Still Gets Under the Skin!", by Trace ThurmanQuestions? Ep 98Copycat (1995) feat. K Lynch

E

Here's our Salem Horror Fest episode on Jon Amiel's vastly underrated (and under-seen) 1995 film Copycat! Joining us for the discussion is the director of the festival themselves: K Lynch!Join us as we wax poetic over the incredible performances of Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter and the implied lesbianism between their characters, raise our eyebrows at Harry Connick Jr's "squirrel covers"-obsessed serial killer, and debate whether or not killing off the only explicitly gay character is homophobic.Plus, we'll lament the fact that Copycat was released in the shadow of Se7en, which came out just a month prior. But never fear! We'll sing the film's praises and point out all the things it gets right, and why it should be remembered as a classic '90s thriller.Questions? Comments? Snark? Joining us at Camp Bloodbath is Jenn Adams, co-host of Psycho Analysis Podcast and The Losers Club Podcast, who has a deep appreciation for the film's emotional beats. We spend plenty of time unpacking this comfort horror film, particularly the mother/daughter relationship between Malin Akerman and Trace's fave, Taissa Farmiga, and Vicki (Nina Dobrev)'s redemptive arc.Plus: disagreements over Adam Devine and Thomas Middleditch's humor, getting sidetracked talking about everyone's filmography and the apex of Joe's inability to pronounce names correctly.Questions? Joining us for the discussion is Scarred for Life co-host Mary Beth McAndrews, who brings her own passion for vampires to the episode. After a brief crash course on Hammer Horror, we'll laud the performances of Ingrid Pitt as the thrice-named anti-heroic vampire Marcilla/Carmilla/Mircalla, marvel at the unusual vampire lore (shrouds?!), and lament the lack of any interesting male characters (though that is undoubtedly the point).Plus, Mary Beth leads us in a frank discussion of bisexuality and the vampire sub-genre's relationship to it, which isn't too shocking considering this film is sexy af.Questions? Ep 92Showgirls (1995) feat. Nay Bever

E

This week on the pod, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of (decidedly NOT a horror film) Showgirls. Along for the road trip to Vegas is Attack of the Queerwolf co-host Nay Bever, who delivers both laughs and insightful commentary. This probably isn't the episode you're expecting: sure we poke fun at the film's ridiculous elements, but we spend most of our time discussing the film's many terrible men, analyze the success of the film's satire, question who the film's intended audience is and deconstruct the implications of the controversial rape scene. It's not all serious though. Ep 91Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) feat. Zena Dixon

E

Grab your fencing gear and get ready to submit your student film for the coveted Hitchcock Award, because we're discussing the 2000 slasher sequel ‘Urban Legends: Final Cut’ with “Real Queen of Horror” (and co-host of the Bloody Disgusting Podcast) Zena Dixon!Join us as we dive into this much-maligned film, which was directed by famous composer John Ottman (who manages to integrate tons of horror movie references into the film). We've got all areas of the spectrum covered, as Joe hates the film, Zena loves it, and Trace falls somewhere in between.Of course, we'll have to cover the bad: Did Ottman take on too much by opting to direct, compose and co-edit the film? Why does this franchise have a knack for bland-o final girls? Why are all the kills so weak? Is Eva Mendes' lesbian character predatory? And does this film feature the most ridiculous motive ever for a slasher movie villain? But hey, it's not all bad. We've got a kidney heist (in a sequence written by the first film's screenwriter Silvio Horta). We've got inspired performances from Jessica Cauffiel (Valentine and Legally Blonde) and a returning Loretta Devine (whose security guard Reese was sadly dumbed down between films). Ep 90The Quiet (2005) feat. Kill By Kill

E

On this week's episode, we're evoking the spirit of American Beauty with lesbian director Jamie Babbit's incest drama/thriller The Quiet. Thankfully we've got Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of the Kill by Kill podcast to help us unpack all of the lurid melodrama of this Elisha Cuthbert/Camilla Belle stinker.Where did this snooze worthy film go wrong: the languid pacing? The atrocious dialogue? Aiming for prestige instead of embracing queerness and camp?In between bouts of maniacal laughter about milkshakes, masturbation and Belle's complete lack of screen presence, we never quite reach consensus (Trace *likes* this film...but can't explain why!). All we know for certain is that Connor Kennedy wants to fuck us!Resource: If you are a child or know of a child who is being sexually abused, please contact the Childhelp National Child Abuse HotlineQuestions? Ep 89Tenebrae (1982) feat. Michael Varrati

E

On this week's episode, Joe, Trace and special returning guest Michael Varrati board a plane to Rome to discuss the pod's very first Dario Argento film, 1982 (or is it 1984?)'s Tenebrae. This is another video nasty (see our episode on Island of Death), so it's got a convoluted production history that includes censorship and rumored on-set tension between Argento and frequent collaborator Daria Nicolodi. Tenebrae is also a surprisingly queer positive text from the master of horror, from the casual inclusion of a lesbian couple in the film's most notorious set piece to the casting of trans actress Eva Robins. It's also textbook Freudian psychosexual, right down to those red heels.Come for Michael's impassioned defence of dubbing in Gialli, stay for Trace's love of the doberman sequence (the Helen Shivers of giallo setpieces!), then leave for Michael's terrible dad jokes.Questions? Ep 88What Keeps You Alive (2018)

E

We're heading to a cabin in the beautiful woods of Muskoka, Ontario to celebrate the anniversary of the two lovely ladies at the center of Colin Minihan's 2018 thriller What Keeps You Alive! After discussing the implications of the film changing the protagonists of the original script (a heterosexual couple) to a lesbian couple, we'll then delve into the film's only real acknowledgement of the struggles of being gay (in a sequence that is quite personal to Joe). Yet we can't deny that the film has quite a few insightful things to say about relationships, especially its emphasis on the importance of communication (ya know, so you're not blindsided by the fact that your spouse is actually a psychopath). That it's anchored by two stellar lead performances doesn't hurt, either.Plus, we'll (rightly) laud the film's memorable rowboat set piece (yes, really), gush over the blacklight-lit montage that cleverly uses Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", and feel equally frustrated with the film's protracted third act.Questions? Ep 87Blumhouse's Fantasy Island (2020)

E

Since we're in the middle of "Vacation Month," we're taking a vacation! Enjoy this Patreon-exclusive (well, not anymore) episode that we recorded back in February for our loyal Patrons. Congrats, all you non-Patrons. Here's a taste of what life is like on the wild side.Prep your boring, inane (sex?) fantasies, because we are en route to Blumhouse's Fantasy Island. This is the second Blumhouse production in as many months to feature pretty people battling villains with black goo coming out of their eyes; it's also the second feature in a row from writer/director Jeff Wadlow to feature a gay asian character, so someone's got a fetish.Up for discussion: Trace thinks this film is entertaining and stupid, while Joe thinks it is lazy and boring. We both agree, however, that the twist makes NO SENSE. Of course neither does the island's geography, or the number of characters, or its resolution. Oh, and there's the fun implications of suggesting being bullied turns you into a stalker/killer. Thankfully we have goddesses Maggie Q and Lucy Hale (plus everyone's favorite lovable asshole, Ryan Hansen) to keep us entertained as we wade through this nearly 2-hour train wreck. Questions? Ep 86Island of Death (1976)

E

Vacation Month continues with a trip to beautiful - and exceedingly queer - Mykonos and Nico Mastorakis' notorious exploitation/video nasty film, Island of Death. This is the Stefon of horror films because it has EVERYTHING: bestiality, incest, targeted homophobic violence, misogyny, rape and so much more (please pay attention to the content warning!)After the film's lengthy production history and categorization in the UK's notorious list of video nasties (thanks for the background info, Anya Stanley!), we compare our readings of the film. Trace says it's merely shock value while Joe argues it's a comedy about religious hypocrisy (Mastorakis himself would say it's nothing more than an opportunity to make money!)Plus: comparisons to Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, Haneke, and Last House on the Left; Trace's forgetful history with onscreen bestiality; and logistical advice for water sports. Finally, we make a special request for Greek listeners: is your name Nico and did you work on this film?Anya's Doin' The Nasties column: https://www.anyawrites.com/columnQuestions? Comments? Snark? Micro Queers: Instinct (2018)

We're trying something new and exciting! This weekly "micro" spin-off of Horror Queers will examine queer horror shorts in an effort to amplify the work of talented filmmakers who may not yet have made a feature film. The sole criteria: the shorts will always be queer or made by queer directors and they will always be freely available for public consumption. To kick things off, we're starting with Brazilian genre director Maria Alice Arida's film Instinct (click to view the short), which chronicles the dangerous attraction between older gallery owner Isabelle and provocative new performance artist Camila. Ep 85The Descent (2005)

E

Pack your climbing gear because we're headed to the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to go caving with the ladies (er....chicks with picks) of Neil Marshall's 2005 masterpiece The Descent on its 15th anniversary! How is a movie this scary when the monsters don't even appear until an hour into the film?Join us as we....um....descend into a discussion of why Juno (Natalie Mendoza) is a compelling character in spite of all of her mistakes (thanks, Joe!). We'll also investigate the potential queerness of Beth (Alex Reid) and Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) and choose between the UK and US endings of the film (spoiler alert: it's an easy choice). Also does The Descent feature the most tense scene in cinema history?Plus, an educational TED talk about the differences between claustrophobia and cleithrophobia. Why can't Trace stop bringing up the atrocious 2009 sequel? What is a dealbreaker movie and why do both of us consider The Descent to be one? And how do you give a lemon an orgasm?Questions? Ep 84Fright Night (1985) feat. Peaches Christ

E

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of quintessential queer horror film Fright Night, the boys, along with special guest (and FN super fan) Peaches Christ, head to the suburbs along with our hunky live-in-carpenter, our collection of knit sweaters and an entire wall full of clocks.Things get personal as Peaches shares her experience of working with Stephen Geoffreys, Joe confesses that the Tom Holland film is the genesis of his journey into queer horror and Trace discloses why Evil Ed's story arc made such an impact on him as a young gay teen. Expect a lot of conversation about how vital Ed's death scene is to the film's success and how rare it is in horror. It's not all serious though! Trace finally acknowledges that costumes in movies exist; Joe delivers a pornographic ode to Chris Sarandon's sweaters; and Peaches shares gossip about Vincent Price "straight" from the mouth of none other than Elvira herself! Plus: the film's legacy as the other queer horror film of 1985, celebrating Amanda Bearse as a lesbian icon (with extended discussion on Married...with Children) and a conspiracy theory about how much Kevin Williamson must have loved this film.Questions? Horror Time! podcast.Join us as we enter the House Femm and meet all of its kooky queer characters and sit down for a lovely dinner of roast beef and potatoes. Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because it won't be long before the mute butler Morgan (Boris Karloff) breaks into the liquor cabinet, and that's never a fun time! We'll discuss Whale's important place in the annals of queer horror, laugh at his spoofing of heterosexuality (a marriage proposal within 12 hours of meeting? C'mon!) and play 'I Spy' with all of the secret queer aspects Whale had to sneak into the film.Plus, Joe lauds the film's secret third-act villain who is also a pyromaniac (or...flaming?), Trace makes an attempt to scat and Kate educates us all on the reasoning behind the gender-bending patriarch of the Femm family.Questions?
