Lighthouses carry a special place in history, and they still are very important today. These were manned by lighthouse keepers who’s main duty was to watch the light, which historically was a lantern that they had to make sure it burned bright and clean. They also had to ensure that the lights mechanisms stayed operational so it would flash in its own unique distance pattern. During foggy patches and stormy weather, multiple lighthouse keepers would work. One would operate the signals, while the other would operate the light. Lighthouse keepers would work very long days and nights, because if they didn’t disaster could strike. It was because of these people that ships would be able to safely go in and out of harbours. These people were the ones who warned ships crew that there were rocky coasts or dangerous shallow waters. I was really excited to hear that ten years after the tv show Dexter ended, that producers decided to bring it back. In case you haven’t heard of it or watched it, the TV show Dexter is about a man who is an adorable but awkward blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department by day - and a serial killer at night. His adoptive father detected his son’s murderous ways very early, and using his skills from his job as a Miami Police Officer - he taught Dexter his “code”. So what was this code? Dexter could only target evil people, and specifically serial killers like himself. As the series progresses, Dexter tries to hide his dark side while he struggles with the morality of his duel nature. As much as this show is great entertainment, for some it was an inspiration. When I was a young girl, I read all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder “Little House” books. I was enchanted by the tales of young Laura who’s family had great adventures, while protecting and supporting each other. I felt a kinship with this girl, since I grew up on a farm in the Canadian prairies. I knew from personal experience how physically hard farming could be, and I could only imagine how difficult it would be to grow up during those times. I also saw my own father in the character of Charles Ingalls. He was a strong man, who loved his family. He would do anything to help protect those he loved. So imagine my surprise when I recently discovered that Pa Ingalls may have killed some people. Just a heads up here, today we will be talking about murder…a lot of murder. If you guys haven’t figured it out by now, I love history. I love history that is not the norm, and things that people likely never heard about. And that is why I love hearing a person’s family history. It isn’t necessarily the type of history that makes the news, or that lore develops from, but it tells the tale of how we as individuals got to where we are today. During the Middle Ages, demonic possession was the go to explanation for erratic or different behaviour within society. The treatment for this was exorcism. When reviewing cases of possession from the past, experts have found traits that lean towards affected individuals having personality disorders, mood disorders, and other mental illnesses. But sometimes, there are cases that makes one stop and think…maybe sometimes it isn’t just mental illness. Is it possibly something more? Whenever a bad storm is on its way, I feel it. It has always been that way…I start getting pain behind my eyes, and if I don’t take medication I end up with a bad migraine. My doctor told me that there are many people who are just like me, and we are considered to be human barometers. Many times all I need to do is take a single Tylenol or Advil, and the problem is solved. But what if I took that pill, and it was tampered with. This is what happened in 1982 when several people took Tylenol without knowing that someone tampered with them. They were laced with potassium cyanide. The word poltergeist is a German word that stands for noisy ghost or spirit. It is said to be responsible for physical disturbances and turmoil. Many claim that poltergeists are capable of physical abuse like hitting, pinching, or tripping people as well as moving objects, and making noises like knocking on doors. They traditionally are described as troublesome, and they haunt a person versus a location. Even though the name of these entities have been tagged to Germany lore, some variations of poltergeist activities are found in many different cultures. Early claims of spirits attacking and harassing their victims date back to the 1st century, but the name of poltergeists only started to become more common in the early 17th century. Some believe that tales of poltergeists are only hoaxes, and some others think that it is just illusion, memory lapses, or wishful thinking. But for some, this is a very real and terrifying reality. Humanity has always been fascinated with the ocean, and even today - we are not entirely positive what lives in the waters that cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface. So it should be no surprise that storytellers throughout history have populated these waters with all sort of monsters that are ready to wreck havoc on sailors at any time. Some of these mythical sea monsters are said to be so large that they can lay waste to entire cities with ease, while others are no bigger than any other creature in the seas. In the late 1880’s; London’s East End was the scene of a series of brutal murders, which remains unsolved to this day. The victims were women, and their deaths all took place relatively close to each other. All of these killings are believed to be committed by one man. Although his identity has baffled experts for over a century; today this man is known as one of the world’s most infamous serial killers - Jack the Ripper. These men immigrated from Scotland in search of a new future, but instead ended the futures of many. Most people today say they don’t believe in curses. But if you consider the prevalence of curses in today’s media; it suggests that this concept still has a hold on many peoples psyches, and that many still believe that this could happen to them. From a scientific perspective, there is a rational explanation behind why people could believe they are cursed. For example, studies show that people who believe they are cursed come up with this idea due to their own thinking patterns, or from the desire to make sense of the world around them. Science also tells us that if a person does believe in curses that this belief is often reinforced by other psychological tendencies. There is no scientific evidence to support a supernatural base for curses, but the belief of a curse has powerful impact of people. When you come home you expect to be safe...after all...your home is your castle…right? But even though you may not want to believe this, the truth is that there is no way to guarantee for your safety no matter where you are. For one small town in Ohio, they learned this lesson the hard way when an unknown individual began mailing threatening and sexually explicit letters to residents. Now if that isn’t scary enough, what made this worse is that in small towns everyone knows everyone else. There are no real strangers, and the person who wrote those letters knew way too much. For years locals looked over their shoulders. Some wondered if they would be targeted, while others wondered how they got in the letter writers crosshairs. In 1893, a man named H.H. Holmes was the master of his domain. He lured victims to his macabre hotel that he outfitted with trap doors, gas chambers, and a basement crematorium. What are the ingredients for the perfect modern day urban myth? Well…it needs to be something that a quick Google search will not give away its true origin. It also needs to be something that lingers and re-manifests...something that jostles memories of the first time it supposedly creeps out of the darkness, and makes itself known. Today, the tale you will hear has these elements, and has been one of the most talked about of all modern based myths. The Mothman is a creature that was first documented in the late 1960s, and since then has been spotted countless times in the United States. Some claim it comes before cataclysmic events, and others claim it is connected to UFOs and the Men in Black. But others believe it is a hoax, or maybe a product of mass hysteria. A little while ago, we did a show about fairytales, and how Disney has a talent of retelling these ancient tales that were passed from generation to generation. They take these stories and Disney-fy them for kids. These stories were not made for kids though...they were dark, full of deception and death. These stories are often more complex than folk lore, and have a lesson for us to learn. Disney makes all the women and their true loves heroes. The women are delicate but strong, and the men are valiant and brave. They somehow make it through insurmountable odds to save the world against evil. They defeat the bad guys, take their thrones, and live happily ever after in castles with their woodland friends. Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea. It is east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of the Bahamas, and it has a very interesting history. It was originally inhabited by an indigenous population that migrated from South America before the first Europeans arrived on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus. The island was claimed by Spain, who ceded to France in 1687. During the French Revolution of 1789 to 1799, slaves and free people of colour launched the Haitian Revolution which changed the countries trajectory forever. After years of conflict, France was defeated and Haiti declared their sovereignty on January 1, 1804 becoming the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was the second republic in the Americas, was the first country to abolish slavery, and the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. I remember one day my mom brought up that she was thinking of donating her body to science when she dies. She said to me that she wasn’t going to use it anyway, so why not? Why not help someone? I told her that I would support whatever she chooses, and ultimately she told me that she decided to be an organ donor and not donate her whole body to science. People who decide to donate their organs to others are heroes. People who decide to donate their bodies to science are helping people learn and help with studies that save lives. Today, I am presenting an episode that I wanted to put out to all of you since the very beginning of this podcast. The thing is…I avoided it until now. The reason is that the subject matter is a sensitive one, and close to my heart. I honestly started to try to develop this episode multiple times over the past year, and walked away since it affected me so deeply. But I feel that it is vitally important to speak out about our subject matter today…child abuse. Child abuse is physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and/or neglect. It can include both physical and mental injuries that last a lifetime. It involves an abuse of power and a breach of trust, and even one event no matter how small can destroy lives. But the stories that you are going to hear today are not small. They are in fact some of the worst case scenarios, and I feel that it is important that they are remembered. It is important that these children are remembered. Today we will be talking about abuse so severe that it resulted in what is called a feral child. A feral child is a human child who has lived isolated away from other human contact from a very young age. They have little to no experience with human care, behaviours, or even language. These children at times were victims of severe abuse, or trauma before running away or being abandoned. They are sometimes are the subjects of folklore or legend, and are often portrayed as having been raised by animals. About 61 years ago, something happened in the Ural Mountains that has resulted in a conspiracy theory that just wont go away. A band of skiers trekked through this mountains stashing food, and extra skis in a valley to pick up on their way back from their trip. Later that same night, these nine experienced skiers and hikers burst out of their tents half dressed fleeing into the night and into a blizzard. They were later found dead - some with their bones broken, and one was even missing her tongue. For decades, few people beyond the victims family and friends were even aware that this happened. A lonely hearts killer, which is otherwise known as a want-ad killer, is someone who finds their victims historically through classified or personal ads, or match making organizations. With the evolution of the internet, this has evolved to include dating apps, and looking for love chat rooms. The motivation of these type of killers vary with some planning to rob their victims, or some wanting to satisfy a pathological impulsive. In Episode 10, we discuss famous hauntings in two plantations. Lore developed around these plantations for several reasons. One of these was to help bring in tourists, but the other was that historically lore that surrounds plantations is many times altered to emphasize the horrors of slavery. In the story you will hear today, these don’t apply. The case you will hear actually happened the way it is presented. It wasn’t exaggerated to bring in tourists, but is a case of extreme hatred that was targeted at one family, corruption at the highest levels, and a community that had the taste for blood. By the dawn of the 19th century, consumption which is now known as tuberculosis had killed one in seven people. Throughout much of the 1800s, tuberculosis patients looked for a cure in sanatoriums where it was believed that resting in a healthy environment would result in a cure. But for many it wasn’t, and they never left. For most patients, time spent in a sanatorium resulted in death in a time that no cure existed for this contagious disease. Genetics can be a funny thing sometimes. In my case for example, I look like my mom but when I had my DNA tested I was genetically more my dad. In the case of my niece and nephew, they both have the most beautiful shade of red hair. Apparently my sister-in-laws grandfather had a red beard, but no one is positive why these two won the genetic lottery with their hair colour. Sometimes genetics can lead to some strange things though, and in the case of a family from Kentucky in the United States, they are now famous because of it. They started appearing in local lore and in fairytales as a versatile symbol for evil and transgression, and by the late 16th and 17th centuries people of all classes believed that witches were everywhere.
