The province of Alberta in Canada is known mostly for being oil country with farms sprinkled in-between. When I was growing up, I loved to travel off the farm to spend time with my cousins in the city of Edmonton. I would stay at my aunt and uncle’s home, and my cousins and I would roam wherever we wanted to. There was no reason for my aunt and uncle to worry, because after all…Edmonton was a safe place. Lighthouses are beacons of light that help ships safely come home, and often they are a lifeline to seafarers caught in the chaos of a violent storm. But sometimes; lighthouses can’t save those at sea. Many sailors, captains, and passengers have died in coastal accidents, pirate attacks, or due to their inability to see the light of these beacons of hope. America’s Most Wanted was an American tv show that debuted on February 7, 1988 that was hosted by John Walsh. John had gained publicity and became a crime advocate after his own son was kidnapped and murdered in 1981. The show featured crime reenactments and interviews with those who were involved, with the goal to get tips that could eventually solve the crime. This show was the longest running crime reality show in the history of Fox Broadcasting Company, and it contributed to the arrest of more than 1000 fugitives. One of those fugitives was living in suburbia, and was known as a loving husband who worked as an accountant. Female friendships are very special. Many times these bonds are shown to last longer than other bonds in a woman’s life whether they are romantic, family, or otherwise. When I was a young child; my mom would drop me off at my grandparent’s house while she ran her errands. Grandma would plunk me down on the living room couch, and give me her newspapers to read. But my grandma’s newspapers were not the ones that you likely read as a child. Her’s were tabloids on their best day, and had titles like The National Inquirer, The National Examiner, and The Weekly World News. It was in one of these that I saw a picture that mesmerized me. Very few women in history stand out in the way that Agrippina the Younger does. She was the granddaughter of the first Roman emperor Octavian, and was a great niece to Emperor Tiberius. She was Emperor Caligula’s sister, the wife of Emperor Claudius, and she was the mother of Emperor Nero. This pedigree allowed for her to have immense power, but even so - Agrippina lived in a society ruled by men. Because of this, she had to fight, scheme, and possibly murder to gain her power. Robert Pickton, who is known as the Pig Farmer Killer, confessed to killing forty nine women between 1995 and 2001. His crimes sparked widespread outrage, and this resulted in the Canadian government acknowledging the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. Robert died on May 31, 2024 in a way that many think that he deserved, but his death brought up a lot of questions about his crimes and who else may have been involved. In December of 2021, we released an episode called “The Edmonton Dexter Wannabe” that tells the tale of Mark Twitchell. He murdered a man after being inspired by the fictional tv character Dexter Morgan. Dexter was the antihero of a book series by Jeff Lindsay that was developed into a tv show by the same name. In both the books and tv series; Dexter is a forensic blood spatter analyst who works for the Miami-Metro police. In his spare time, Dexter is a vigilante serial killer who targets other murderers who evaded the justice system. Mark Twitchell was inspired by this, but he did not target evil doers. He targeted an innocent man. But Jeff Lindsay didn’t just make Dexter’s story up. He was inspired by a man that has been called “the perfect psychopath”, who murdered at least seventy people. About two hundred years before the famous witch trials happened in Salem; men and women were being convicted of transforming into werewolves. There is a type of female killer that has become so infamous that they have their own nickname - the black widow. This name comes from the Black Widow spider that are found all over the world. They are considered to be the most venomous type of spiders found in the United States, so people are naturally not big fans of them even though people rarely die from their bites. But it wasn’t due to their venom that these spiders are compared to deadly female killers. It is actually because of a a widely circulated myth that the females of the species eat their mates after sexual contact. While this actually does happen sometimes; this isn’t regular behaviour. This didn’t stop this falsehood persisting today, and now being attached to women who decide to murder their lovers. These women are a lot more dangerous than their spider counterparts, and are known to act out their anger, sociopathic tendencies, or desire for financial gains by killing their husbands, boyfriends, or both. There are many types of of sweetener that a person can choose from. Some come in granular form like sugar, while others come in a syrup form like corn syrup. Another is molasses which is considered to be a liquid sugar that contains sucrose, and small amounts of fructose and glucose. In 2009; a psychological horror film was released that changed this horror subgenera forever. The movie called “The Orphan” tells the tale of a couple who’s marriage became strained after the stillbirth of their third child. This loss was very hard on the family, and as a way to move forward the couple decided to adopt a nine year old Russian girl named Esther from a local orphanage. The couple’s oldest son Daniel resents the family’s new addition, while their five year old daughter Max embraces having a new sister. This is where things start to get strange. Esther starts exhibiting hostile behaviour towards animals and school mates, and she seems to have knowledge of someone older than her. When Sister Abigail from the orphanage decides to come to the house to check in on Esther, this is when the couple finds out that tragic events and incidents always occur around her. One of these was the deaths of Esther’s previous adoptive parents. After a whole lot of bad happens, the family learns that Esther is not a nine year old girl after all, but actually is a thirty three year old woman who suffers from proportional dwarfism. She had spent her life posing as a child, and she was actually a violent serial killer who has murdered at least seven people. Now…I am not going to ruin the movie for those who did not see it, but this one is a definite must see. The plot was very different for its time, but what most people don’t know is that this terrifying tale is actually based on a true story.
