A little while ago, we did a show about fairytales, and how Disney has a talent of retelling these ancient tales that were passed from generation to generation. They take these stories and Disney-fy them for kids. These stories were not made for kids though...they were dark, full of deception and death. These stories are often more complex than folk lore, and have a lesson for us to learn. Disney makes all the women and their true loves heroes. The women are delicate but strong, and the men are valiant and brave. They somehow make it through insurmountable odds to save the world against evil. They defeat the bad guys, take their thrones, and live happily ever after in castles with their woodland friends. Most murders follow a pattern, or have clues. Many times the motive is made clear by what is found at the crime scene. But sometimes cases do not fit into a handy template. Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea. It is east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of the Bahamas, and it has a very interesting history. It was originally inhabited by an indigenous population that migrated from South America before the first Europeans arrived on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus. The island was claimed by Spain, who ceded to France in 1687. During the French Revolution of 1789 to 1799, slaves and free people of colour launched the Haitian Revolution which changed the countries trajectory forever. After years of conflict, France was defeated and Haiti declared their sovereignty on January 1, 1804 becoming the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was the second republic in the Americas, was the first country to abolish slavery, and the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. I remember one day my mom brought up that she was thinking of donating her body to science when she dies. She said to me that she wasn’t going to use it anyway, so why not? Why not help someone? I told her that I would support whatever she chooses, and ultimately she told me that she decided to be an organ donor and not donate her whole body to science. People who decide to donate their organs to others are heroes. People who decide to donate their bodies to science are helping people learn and help with studies that save lives. Today, I am presenting an episode that I wanted to put out to all of you since the very beginning of this podcast. The thing is…I avoided it until now. The reason is that the subject matter is a sensitive one, and close to my heart. I honestly started to try to develop this episode multiple times over the past year, and walked away since it affected me so deeply. But I feel that it is vitally important to speak out about our subject matter today…child abuse. Child abuse is physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and/or neglect. It can include both physical and mental injuries that last a lifetime. It involves an abuse of power and a breach of trust, and even one event no matter how small can destroy lives. But the stories that you are going to hear today are not small. They are in fact some of the worst case scenarios, and I feel that it is important that they are remembered. It is important that these children are remembered. Today we will be talking about abuse so severe that it resulted in what is called a feral child. A feral child is a human child who has lived isolated away from other human contact from a very young age. They have little to no experience with human care, behaviours, or even language. These children at times were victims of severe abuse, or trauma before running away or being abandoned. They are sometimes are the subjects of folklore or legend, and are often portrayed as having been raised by animals. About 61 years ago, something happened in the Ural Mountains that has resulted in a conspiracy theory that just wont go away. A band of skiers trekked through this mountains stashing food, and extra skis in a valley to pick up on their way back from their trip. Later that same night, these nine experienced skiers and hikers burst out of their tents half dressed fleeing into the night and into a blizzard. They were later found dead - some with their bones broken, and one was even missing her tongue. For decades, few people beyond the victims family and friends were even aware that this happened. A lonely hearts killer, which is otherwise known as a want-ad killer, is someone who finds their victims historically through classified or personal ads, or match making organizations. With the evolution of the internet, this has evolved to include dating apps, and looking for love chat rooms. The motivation of these type of killers vary with some planning to rob their victims, or some wanting to satisfy a pathological impulsive. For many people their reputation is everything. For some it determines their status in society, and for others it is a measure of their influence. A person’s reputation is a sum of all actions that is reflected by the people around us, in the way they treat or interact with us. It is an indirect result of anything and everything we do, and even though it takes years to build one - it can take minutes to destroy. In Episode 10, we discuss famous hauntings in two plantations. Lore developed around these plantations for several reasons. One of these was to help bring in tourists, but the other was that historically lore that surrounds plantations is many times altered to emphasize the horrors of slavery. In the story you will hear today, these don’t apply. The case you will hear actually happened the way it is presented. It wasn’t exaggerated to bring in tourists, but is a case of extreme hatred that was targeted at one family, corruption at the highest levels, and a community that had the taste for blood. By the dawn of the 19th century, consumption which is now known as tuberculosis had killed one in seven people. Throughout much of the 1800s, tuberculosis patients looked for a cure in sanatoriums where it was believed that resting in a healthy environment would result in a cure. But for many it wasn’t, and they never left. For most patients, time spent in a sanatorium resulted in death in a time that no cure existed for this contagious disease. Genetics can be a funny thing sometimes. In my case for example, I look like my mom but when I had my DNA tested I was genetically more my dad. In the case of my niece and nephew, they both have the most beautiful shade of red hair. Apparently my sister-in-laws grandfather had a red beard, but no one is positive why these two won the genetic lottery with their hair colour. Sometimes genetics can lead to some strange things though, and in the case of a family from Kentucky in the United States, they are now famous because of it. Between the years of 1482 and 1782; thousands of people were accused of witchcraft and were executed. People believed that witches were everywhere plotting with the devil to cause harm. They started appearing in local lore and in fairytales as a versatile symbol for evil and transgression, and by the late 16th and 17th centuries people of all classes believed that witches were everywhere. They were a deadly threat to life and of the divine order. It is these beliefs that helped develop the legend of witches, but also resulted in innocent people dying. The Palace of Versailles has a special place in my heart. My nine times great grandfather managed the farms at this location that was the royal seat of power for over 100 years. For well over a century, some have made claims that a person can suddenly, and without explanation explode into a ball of fire. The phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion or SHC has been talked about in countless books and television shows concerning unexplained mysteries. I remember as a kid, I read stories about SHC in what my grandma called her newspapers which were the National Enquirer, and The World News. I found the concept of SHC hard to believe even at this age. There are three things needed to make a fire…oxygen, fuel, and an ignition source. Christmas is a time of celebration, and joy. To me, it’s not about getting presents. When you walk down the streets of New Orleans, you will hear the sounds of jazz music wherever you go. It normally is calming and soothing, but on March 19, 1919 it only brought fear. Why? If there is one thing that Disney is known for is their re-telling of fairy tales. They take a fairy tale, and Disney it up for the big screen. All the women are beautiful, but oppressed in some way. All the men are strong and valiant. Somehow facing insurmountable odds they are always victorious against the bad guy, take their thrones, and live happily ever after wearing uniforms or hoop skirts while hanging out with the forest creatures or friends they met along the way. But that is not how these stories started. There was no hoop skirts or dancing teapots. Fairy tales are actually a type of folk lore that was handed down from generation to generation. While a folk tale is often simplistic in its storyline, fairy tales are often more complex. While today’s versions of the original stories are told to children, they were originally meant for an adult audience due to their darkness and gruesome plots. An Angel of Death is a type of criminal offender that often becomes a serial killer. They are usually employed as a caregiver or as someone who is supposed to protect the most vulnerable, but decides that their victims would be much better off if they no longer suffered and they end up killing them. Many times it is said that this behaviour starts with the vulnerable, but soon escalates to encompass those who are healthy. The motivation for these people vary, but it is said that these types of killers have a pathological interest in the power of life over death, and can be attracted to professions that they are most likely to find their victims, like policing, firefighting, and healthcare for example.They look like the rest of us, but in their minds they may be looking at you as their next victim. The act of deliberately inflicting severe physical or mental suffering on people as a form or punishment, fulfilling a twisted desire, or to force action from the victim has been done from the beginning of time, and it still occurs today. It has been carried out by or sanctioned by individuals, groups, and states for many reasons like punishment or revenge, extortion or persuasion, political action or coercion, or to get a confession whether the victim is guilty or not. Although torture is sanctioned in some areas of the world today, it is prohibited under international law and domestic law of most countries. It is widely illegal, and is an incredible violation of human rights which makes it unacceptable under Article 5 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In late 1922; British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the King Tutankhamun who died at the age of approximately 18 years old in 1323 BC. When I was a kid, my mom told me about something she experienced as a young child. She grew up in a French Canadian Catholic family, and attended a school where she was taught by nuns. As you can imagine, religion was an important part of my mother’s childhood. When she was in grade one, she was assigned a part in her school’s play due to she was the youngest in the school. She was to partake in one scene which was as follows: Mom was a young girl that was playing when the devil approaches her. She was supposed to be scared and run away. She told me she was clear on what she was supposed to do, but at no time before the play did she see the person who was in the role of the devil in costume. On the day of the play, she played her part as she was told - that was until the devil came out on the stage. Mom lost it. She was terrified and hysterical which looked great on stage, but after she ran off stage she could not be calmed. The devil came to get her! Do you want to know what finally did the trick? The nuns gave her a necklace, a tiny Virgin Mary statue, and a candy bar. Now considering the time and the culture, I can completely understand how my mom believed that the devil came for her, but it was a teenager in a costume. One day Elizabeth Fritzl’s father asked her for some help with a project he was working on. For months he was building a cellar underneath the family home, and he needed Elizabeth’s help to lift a door on a frame. Elisabeth climbed down the stairs, and helped him put the door up. Did you ever wonder about the origin of something? I do…like potatoes. How did people decide that potatoes were delicious? Thousands of years ago, was a cave man just walking along and saying to himself, “ I am so hungry, but I had sabertooth tiger last night. Hmmm (caveman looks to the ground) that plant looks interesting…(caveman then pulls leaf on what will be known as a potato plant, and takes a bite). YUCK! This is nasty! (caveman then decides to look to the ground) What are those things attached to the plant poking out of the ground (caveman pulls out what will be known as a potato, and dusts it off). I’m sure this will be way better (caveman takes bite). GROSS! But if I bake it over my newly invented fire for about half an hour or so, add sour cream, butter, and chives this will be awesome!!! Now I am pretty sure it did not happen like that, but one has to wonder how did people come up with the ideas that resulted in what we commonly use or consume today. Sometimes people invent items with a purpose in mind, and they fulfill that purpose. In the late 1970s, Wes Craven was a struggling filmmaker who created his first horror movie which is now the classic The Last House on the Left. He did want to branch out, but could only find financing for horror films. He soon realized that he was really, really good at scaring people, and soon became the best known horror filmmaker of all time. Forty years ago, he produced another film on a very tight budget…The Hills Have Eyes. Even in todays standards, this movie is brutal. It starts with Bob Carter, his wife Ethel, and five other family members driving in their camper vans going towards San Diego. An accident occurs, and the group gets stranded in the desert. Two of the men decide to go for help, and the rest of the group decides to stay put and wait. What they do not know is that where they are stranded is where nuclear testing occurred decades earlier, and it mutated a group of people who now have developed the taste for human flesh.
