For well over a century, some have made claims that a person can suddenly, and without explanation explode into a ball of fire. The phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion or SHC has been talked about in countless books and television shows concerning unexplained mysteries. I remember as a kid, I read stories about SHC in what my grandma called her newspapers which were the National Enquirer, and The World News. I found the concept of SHC hard to believe even at this age. There are three things needed to make a fire…oxygen, fuel, and an ignition source. In the stories I read, they had two out of the three - but no ignition source. Then how can this happen? Is it even possible, or just another tale? Christmas is a time of celebration, and joy. To me, it’s not about getting presents. If there is one thing that Disney is known for is their re-telling of fairy tales. They take a fairy tale, and Disney it up for the big screen. All the women are beautiful, but oppressed in some way. All the men are strong and valiant. Somehow facing insurmountable odds they are always victorious against the bad guy, take their thrones, and live happily ever after wearing uniforms or hoop skirts while hanging out with the forest creatures or friends they met along the way. But that is not how these stories started. There was no hoop skirts or dancing teapots. Fairy tales are actually a type of folk lore that was handed down from generation to generation. While a folk tale is often simplistic in its storyline, fairy tales are often more complex. While today’s versions of the original stories are told to children, they were originally meant for an adult audience due to their darkness and gruesome plots. An Angel of Death is a type of criminal offender that often becomes a serial killer. They are usually employed as a caregiver or as someone who is supposed to protect the most vulnerable, but decides that their victims would be much better off if they no longer suffered and they end up killing them. Many times it is said that this behaviour starts with the vulnerable, but soon escalates to encompass those who are healthy. The motivation for these people vary, but it is said that these types of killers have a pathological interest in the power of life over death, and can be attracted to professions that they are most likely to find their victims, like policing, firefighting, and healthcare for example.They look like the rest of us, but in their minds they may be looking at you as their next victim. The act of deliberately inflicting severe physical or mental suffering on people as a form or punishment, fulfilling a twisted desire, or to force action from the victim has been done from the beginning of time, and it still occurs today. It has been carried out by or sanctioned by individuals, groups, and states for many reasons like punishment or revenge, extortion or persuasion, political action or coercion, or to get a confession whether the victim is guilty or not. Although torture is sanctioned in some areas of the world today, it is prohibited under international law and domestic law of most countries. It is widely illegal, and is an incredible violation of human rights which makes it unacceptable under Article 5 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The word “Occult” is difficult to define, and because of this many have different understandings to what it means. To some it is a fascinating world of paranormal and mystery. In late 1922; British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the King Tutankhamun who died at the age of approximately 18 years old in 1323 BC. This discovery created folklore that flew around the world about curses that befall anyone who intruded on a sealed Egyptian tomb. The press further sensationalized this by releasing stories like The Times in London and New York World Magazine that speculated that…and I quote…”the most dire punishment follows any rash intruder into a sealed tomb.” As the years passed, the curse of the Pharaohs has become deeply embedded into our culture through numerous books, movies, and tv shows. One of my favourite quotes about prophecies was said by a man named Peter Drucker who stated; “Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window. When I was a kid, my mom told me about something she experienced as a young child. She grew up in a French Canadian Catholic family, and attended a school where she was taught by nuns. As you can imagine, religion was an important part of my mother’s childhood. When she was in grade one, she was assigned a part in her school’s play due to she was the youngest in the school. She was to partake in one scene which was as follows: Mom was a young girl that was playing when the devil approaches her. She was supposed to be scared and run away. She told me she was clear on what she was supposed to do, but at no time before the play did she see the person who was in the role of the devil in costume. On the day of the play, she played her part as she was told - that was until the devil came out on the stage. Mom lost it. She was terrified and hysterical which looked great on stage, but after she ran off stage she could not be calmed. The devil came to get her! Do you want to know what finally did the trick? The nuns gave her a necklace, a tiny Virgin Mary statue, and a candy bar. Now considering the time and the culture, I can completely understand how my mom believed that the devil came for her, but it was a teenager in a costume. They are typically wearing a white dress or gown, and are commonly part of legends concerning accidental death, murder, and suicide. These ladies are part of lore from around the world, and are usually connected to unrequited love. One day Elizabeth Fritzl’s father asked her for some help with a project he was working on. For months he was building a cellar underneath the family home, and he needed Elizabeth’s help to lift a door on a frame. Elisabeth climbed down the stairs, and helped him put the door up. When she turned to leave, her father Josef grabbed her and forced a piece of cloth soaked in ether over her mouth and nose. Everything went dark, and she then stayed in the dark for a very long time. Did you ever wonder about the origin of something? I do…like potatoes. How did people decide that potatoes were delicious? Thousands of years ago, was a cave man just walking along and saying to himself, “ I am so hungry, but I had sabertooth tiger last night. Hmmm (caveman looks to the ground) that plant looks interesting…(caveman then pulls leaf on what will be known as a potato plant, and takes a bite). YUCK! This is nasty! (caveman then decides to look to the ground) What are those things attached to the plant poking out of the ground (caveman pulls out what will be known as a potato, and dusts it off). I’m sure this will be way better (caveman takes bite). GROSS! But if I bake it over my newly invented fire for about half an hour or so, add sour cream, butter, and chives this will be awesome!!! Now I am pretty sure it did not happen like that, but one has to wonder how did people come up with the ideas that resulted in what we commonly use or consume today. Sometimes people invent items with a purpose in mind, and they fulfill that purpose. In the late 1970s, Wes Craven was a struggling filmmaker who created his first horror movie which is now the classic The Last House on the Left. He did want to branch out, but could only find financing for horror films. He soon realized that he was really, really good at scaring people, and soon became the best known horror filmmaker of all time. Forty years ago, he produced another film on a very tight budget…The Hills Have Eyes. Even in todays standards, this movie is brutal. It starts with Bob Carter, his wife Ethel, and five other family members driving in their camper vans going towards San Diego. An accident occurs, and the group gets stranded in the desert. Two of the men decide to go for help, and the rest of the group decides to stay put and wait. What they do not know is that where they are stranded is where nuclear testing occurred decades earlier, and it mutated a group of people who now have developed the taste for human flesh. When a person thinks about haunted places, cemeteries usually come up. There are lots of dead bodies there, so it must have ghosts…right? According to lore, ghosts usually haunt the places they died or suffered trauma. This does not normally happen in a cemetery. That is usually where their go after all the bad happened, but it doesn’t mean that cemeteries are not haunted. It doesn’t mean that when you go visit your loved ones that you are alone. In the 1980’s and 1990’s; satanic ritual abuse allegations started popping in the United States, and soon travelled to other parts of the world. This moral panic was named Satanic Panic, and was filled of reports of physical and sexual abuse of people in rituals of devil worship. In its most extreme, the allegations involved a conspiracy of a world wide organization that was led by the wealthy and powerful, and children who were abducted or bred for human sacrifice, pornography, and prostitution. It didn’t matter if there was proof…it didn’t matter if you were innocent. Just like the Salem Witch Trials, if you were accused…you were guilty. To this day people are still in jail concerning these allegations, and experts say that the accusations are not over. In today's episode we will be discussing allegations of child abuse. A curse is any expressed wish that some form of misfortune will befall on a person, place, or object. Some believe that curses are created by a supernatural power while some believe that it can be created by magic or witchcraft. It is also thought that sometimes events occur that stain a person or object, and because of this a curse develops. Many things are said to be cursed. Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty with discarding or parting with possessions due to a perceived need to save them. People suffering with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of items, and because of this, excessive accumulation of items occurs regardless of their financial value. There is little recorded evidence to prove if hoarding existed prior to the twentieth century. Historically though; hoarding started as a way to protect valuables from unrest, but it was considered sinful. At the turn of the century, studies started to occur on this and it was recognized as a mental illness. Today; help is available for people suffering from this, but historically many people did not get the help they needed which resulted in actions that put them in the history books. For those families, they can’t change the channel. Children alone account for an estimated 8 million individuals who go missing world wide per year. These men revolted against their king, outlined their grievances in a powerful document that called for their freedom, and then fought for that freedom. They won what was considered to be a stunning victory over what was then the world's strongest superpower. But the thing is that these men were still men. There have been many studies done on why people stay in relationships with partners that do not fulfill their desires and needs. Many of these studies show that people who stay in these types of relationships suffer from low self esteem, may perceive themselves to be less attractive, or have lower standards. Others believe that it also has to do with people seeing their romantic partners in an unrealistic positive way, or that they consider the alternatives not as desirable. Today is a really special day for me for several reasons…first - this episode is our last episode for season one! The other reason is that today you will hear an interview that I did recently with an amazing lady. Malia Miglino is an actor and makeup artist who lives and works out of Los Angeles, California. She has her own YouTube Channel, and is the host of two of my favourite shows…Macabre Mondays and Grave Hunter. The concept of moving between different points in time has been a very popular topic in science fiction for years. TV shows Dr. Who and Star Trek, along with movies like the Back to the Future Series, show people getting into some sort of machine and time travel to various points in the past or future, and then jump into an adventure. But is time travel real? Scientists do not agree. Some say that any attempt to time travel will kill the human who tries, and others believe it is completely possible. The idea that the dead can remain earthbound started in the most ancient times, and has appeared in countless tales since then. It has spawned its own folklore genre - ghost stories. People believing in ghosts is actually part of a larger belief system, which gives people comfort. After all, who wouldn’t want to believe that loved ones who are gone are watching after us, and help us in our times of need. But with the good, comes the bad. Not all ghosts are good and pure. Some are malevolent, and want to harm. It is the believe in these types of spirits that make us look under the bed at night, or jump when the floor creaks. It is these stories that we tell around campfires, or to scare ourselves. And it is these stories that are told generation after generation, which brings us to one of my favourite ghosts stories that I read about as a child.
