In 1604, King James convened the Hampton Court Conference, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to the problems of the earlier translations perceived by the Puritans, an orthodox faction of the Church of England. Every year, people across the United Kingdom light fireworks and bonfires to commemorate the events of November 5th, 1605. Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night celebrates the capture of Fawkes (1570-1606), who was apprehended under the British Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder, fuses and matches, planning to blow up King James I and his entire Parliament, which would have severely altered the course of British North America. Jacobean Era (1603-25) theater plays were performed by The King's Men, an acting company to which William Shakespeare (1564-1616) belonged for most of his career. In 1608, Samuel Champlain took some colonists up the great River St. Lawrence to establish a new settlement and fur trading post. He founded France's first permanent Canadian colony, which he named Quebec—an indigenous word meaning: where the river narrows. This strategic location was at the foot of a great rocky cape on the north shore, which formed a natural fortress barring the way upstream to the interior. In the spring of 1605, France’s St. Croix settlement was moved to a new site across the Bay of Fundy, on the shore of the Annapolis Basin, an inlet in western Nova Scotia. Here at Port Royal, France's most successful colony to date was established. The general area came to be known as Acadia. Among the lieutenants on this undertaking was a geographer named Samuel de Champlain, who promptly carried out a major exploration of the northeastern coastline of what is now the United States. Throughout his life, Samuel de Champlain was a loyal Catholic soldier. As a young man, he learned to fight with the firearms of his time, acquiring this practical knowledge when serving with the army during the later stages of France's religious wars involving the Holy Catholic League in Brittany from 1594 to 98. During this time he attained the rank of Captain. His soldiering skills, along with his talents as a Navigator and Geographer, would later serve him well during his many adventures in North America. In his early thirties, experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. Along the way, he took detailed notes, wrote an illustrated report on what he learned on this trip, and gave this secret account—entitled ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico 1599 to 1601’—to his King, Henry the fourth, who rewarded Champlain with an annual pension. Sable Island is an isolated small Atlantic sandbar situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia that is notable for its role in early Canadian history when France initiated the first attempts to settle on the island. The Viceroy of New France, Marquis de La Roche, sent soldiers and settlers (mainly criminals) to Sable Island to establish a fishery and fur trading post. When the convicts mutinied, they were left on the tree-less and stone-less Sable Island. Most of the settlers died, but a few managed to survive in mud dwellings for 5 years before being returned to France. Poorly planned, the settlement failed and was abandoned in 1603. Gallic Wars were waged between 58 and 50 BC by the Roman general Julius Caesar against the peoples of Gaul (present-day France). Gallic tribes, including the Averni led by the Celt chieftain Vercingetorix, fought to defend their homelands against an aggressive Roman campaign. The Wars culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, in which a complete Roman victory resulted in the expansion of the Roman Republic over the whole of Gaul. The Conquest of Gaul brought Roman occupation and influence to a land later to become France, one of North America’s major European founding nations.
