Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was an English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen, Elizabeth the First. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke fame would later take up the search for the mythical kingdom. The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 brought fame, both for England and Queen Elizabeth I, and greatly affected the future development of North America. Europe was stunned that such a small island nation had successfully defended itself against such a major aggressor and foreign diplomats began to court England as a possible ally. Elizabeth's popularity soared. The impact of the victory for the nation's self-confidence and the future of North American exploration and colonization cannot be overestimated. England’s success was celebrated in all manners of ways. Songs were written, medals struck, portraits painted and prints published. All lauded Elizabeth as a savior who stood firm to protect her nation, shared the glory of the success with the English navy and gave thanks for divine intervention. On May 28th, 1588, a fleet of a hundred and fifty-one Spanish ships set out from Lisbon, bound for England. Its mission was to transport a huge invasion force across the Channel. The Spanish King, Philip II, was determined to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne and return the English to the Catholic fold. Two months later the mighty Spanish Armada was sighted off the coast of Cornwall. Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) Walter Raleigh’s cousin, was a celebrated Elizabethan Sea Dog—an informal name bestowed upon English privateers who were authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. Carrying letters of marque issued by the English Crown, the Sea Dogs frequently attacked both enemy shipping at sea and enemy outposts on land... frequently targeting the Spanish in North American waters and ports. Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539–83) was an Elizabethan adventurer, explorer, member of parliament and soldier who served during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and was a pioneer of the English colonial empire in North America. He was a maternal half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh and a cousin of Sir Richard Grenville. His dramatic death at sea in 1583 is immortalized by American Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Sir Francis Drake was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 1570s. He was an English explorer, sea captain, privateer, slave trader, Elizabethan naval officer, and politician. He is best known for his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577-80. This included his incursion into the Pacific Ocean, until then an area of exclusive Spanish interest, and his claim to Nova or New Albion for England, an area in what is now the U.S. state of California. Martin Frobisher was an Elizabethan seaman, adventurer and explorer who made three voyages (1576-77-78) to the New World looking for the Northwest Passage to Asia. Admiral Sir John Hawkins was an Elizabethan shipbuilder, naval administrator and commander, merchant, navigator, privateer and slave trader. One of the foremost seamen of 16th-century England, he was the chief architect of the Elizabethan navy and was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth the First in the 1560s. Queen Elizabeth was crowned and buried in 1603 at Westminster Abbey, a large twin-towered Gothic church with a vast interior. Founded over a millennium ago, it is one of the United Kingdom’s most notable religious buildings and the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and, later, British monarchs. Many royal marriages and national commemorative events have also been held within its walls. Gloriana had illuminated an era, for which she gave it her name. A grand ceremony was about to begin. Her Majesty was dressed for the occasion and coiffed in style. Good Queen Bess always dominated special occasions and today would be no exception. Her subjects would pay her homage, as they should. Although Regina’s Monarch and Sovereign official portraits had not changed in decades—propagating intemporal youth and vigor throughout her realm—today her mask would be removed, finally exposing her true visage. Anyone who was ‘anyone’ in the Kingdom was present. The Monarch’s favorite seamstress remained close by, at her post, assuring her anointed Sovereign’s costume was impeccable. The Virgin Queen was ready. She lay still, dignified, royal, arms to either side, reposed in regal attire, attended by her ladies in waiting, ready for one last opulent public appearance... her funeral. Let’s examine the clever and effective use of political art during the reign of Queen Elizabeth while visiting Jesus College founded in 1571 under the reign of the Monarch, making it the only Elizabethan College within the University of Oxford. Paintings of her likeness demonstrated the Tudor concept of power. The portraiture of Queen Elizabeth the First of England illustrates the evolution of English royal portraits from the representations of simple likenesses to the later multifaceted imagery used to convey the power, authority, supremacy and aspirations of the state, as well as of the monarch at its head. Elizabeth paid more attention to propaganda than art, disseminating her portraits widely throughout her realm, including North America. Elizabeth was born at Greenwich in 1533 and was the daughter of the Tudor King Henry VIII by his second wife Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister Queen Mary to the throne in 1558. Elizabeth’s long reign was one of the most brilliant in English history. Referred to as The Golden Age, it is remembered for the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots the year before, and for many important voyages of exploration and discovery to North America. Known as the Virgin Queen, the colony of Virginia along the eastern coast was named after her. Before England ruled the Waves, there was the Mary Rose (1511-45), a technologically advanced sailing vessel that contributed to the future world domination of the English Navy, including the vast waters surrounding the North American continent. While she lay on the sea bed since 1545, the wreck of the Mary Rose and its contents were preserved in silt for centuries prior to being located in 1971 and raised in 1982 in one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history.
