109. Gloriana, The Virgin Queen

Let’s examine the clever and effective use of political art during the reign of Queen Elizabeth while visiting Jesus College founded in 1571 under the reign of the Monarch, making it the only Elizabethan College within the University of Oxford. Paintings of her likeness demonstrated the Tudor concept of power. The portraiture of Queen Elizabeth the First of England illustrates the evolution of English royal portraits from the representations of simple likenesses to the later multifaceted imagery used to convey the power, authority, supremacy and aspirations of the state, as well as of the monarch at its head. Elizabeth paid more attention to propaganda than art, disseminating her portraits widely throughout her realm, including North America. 108. Queen Elizabeth I

Elizabeth was born at Greenwich in 1533 and was the daughter of the Tudor King Henry VIII by his second wife Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister Queen Mary to the throne in 1558. Elizabeth’s long reign was one of the most brilliant in English history. Referred to as The Golden Age, it is remembered for the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots the year before, and for many important voyages of exploration and discovery to North America. Known as the Virgin Queen, the colony of Virginia along the eastern coast was named after her. 104. Raising the Mary Rose

Before England ruled the Waves, there was the Mary Rose (1511-45), a technologically advanced sailing vessel that contributed to the future world domination of the English Navy, including the vast waters surrounding the North American continent. While she lay on the sea bed since 1545, the wreck of the Mary Rose and its contents were preserved in silt for centuries prior to being located in 1971 and raised in 1982 in one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history. 103. King Henry VIII part 2

His life was rocked by repeated scandal, religious schism and lustful ambition making King Henry VIII one of the most fascinating and mixed characters to influence North America’s history. King Henry VIII is probably the most well-known and most studied of English monarchs. His reign is often seen as a prelude to and the forerunner of the British Empire and English activities on the North American continent. Certainly, without the institutional changes he brought, the wars he fought, and the religious differences he ushered into his country, England, and therefore Britain likely would have never risen to the status she ultimately achieved. CharlesFort was established when a French expedition, organized by Huguenot leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and led by the Norman navigator Jean Ribault, landed at the site on the May River in 1562, before moving north to Port Royal Sound. There, on present-day Parris Island, South Carolina—at that time a part of Florida Territory—Ribault left twenty-eight men to build a settlement. 74. Diamonds of Canada

Jacques Cartier led his third and last expedition to the St.-Lawrence river valley in 1541. A new headquarters was established a few miles upstream from the Amerindian village of Stadacona, near the present site of Quebec City. This time Cartier was to be followed by Jean Francois de la Rocque, sieur de Roberval, with a party of colonists. After a wait which lasted through the following winter, Cartier set sail for home, only to meet Roberval’s party in three tall ships in the harbor of what is now St. John’s, Newfoundland. Diamonds of Canada, mined by Jacques Cartier's men at the mouth of Rivière du Cap-Rouge proved to be worthless quartz. Cartier’s "treasure" is remembered in the name of Québec’s Cape Diamond or Cap aux Diamants and also in the French proverb "Faux comme un diamant du Canada", "As false as Canadian diamonds."
