Ep 506Ep. 506 - Haunted Portugal
Portugal sits right along the coast of Spain and while Spain overshadows it in size, the history of Portugal is vast. A mix of cultures have lived and ruled here for centuries. The country became a leader in exploration of the world and thus a principal entity for world trade. Today, the Republic of Portugal is a respected country that heralds peace and has a population of 11 million people. There are quite a few ghosts among that population and on this episode, we are going to feature several locations in the country that are reputedly haunted. The Moment in Oddity features radioactive boars and This Month in History features the first passenger locomotive. Phantasmal Crime 28 - Finding the Bodies
bonusWe often wonder why spirits stay behind in haunted locations. Many times the answer is that some sort of trauma was experienced. And digging even deeper, we sometimes find that a spirit is at unrest because their case hasn't been solved or even perhaps that their body hasn't been discovered. I've been collecting ghost stories from around the world for years. I found this one out of India that happened not too many years ago. This is the story about a murdered couple who wouldn't rest until their bodies were found. Lincoln, Nebraska is the home of the Cornhuskers and its also the state's capitol city. The Sower stands atop the tower of the Capitol Building, preparing to toss some seeds to businesses and neighborhoods below. Some refer to the area as fly over country and describe the landscape as boring. But for us, if you throw ghosts in the mix, a city becomes suddenly exciting. And a quick drive through the nearby rural areas certainly inspires visions of Children of the Corn. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of Lincoln, Nebraska. Phantasmal Crime 27 - The Rose Family Murders
bonusNot too far from Malabar Farm State Park in Ohio sits Pleasant Valley Cemetery. One marble grave marker stands a bit higher than the rest of the headstones around it and across the top is embossed the family name Rose. This marks the final resting place of three members of the Rose family who all died within a thirty day time frame. The cause of death was not some hideous plague that swept through town. The family was murdered. That revelation is horrific enough, but what makes this story truly chilling is that they were murdered by one of their own. The USS Salem was the flagship of the 6th Fleet and is nicknamed "The Sea Witch." She was first launched in 1947 as a Naval cruiser and was fortunate to never see any battle. But that didn't keep her from being linked to death with reports of onboard deaths ranging from 75 to 100. And that has left ghosts on this now floating museum in Quincy, Massachusetts that we had the opportunity to explore when we visited Salem in August of 2022. Phantasmal Crime 26 - The Dark Power of the Everglades
bonusThe Florida Everglades is a network of impenetrable swamps, snaking waterways and thick cypress forests. This would be a great place to make a body disappear and there is a dark history here of disappearances, death and hauntings. Conservative numbers claim that there have been 175 unsolved murders here since 1965. People claim that the Everglades is haunted and there are stories going back to the times of the earliest settlers here, the Calusa tribe, that speak of a dark energy and power. Ep 501Ep. 501 - Hotel del Coronado
There's no other way to describe the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego other than magnificent. The structure is unique and easily recognizable with its Queen Anne Victorian architecture and white clapboard exterior topped with red turrets. Much has been added to it through the years to modernize it, but the original 1888 hotel still dominates the scene. A beautiful stranger came to stay in 1892 and she was found dead at the hotel. And now that hotel is famously haunted by her spirit. From the hotel, one can see the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which also is apparently haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Hotel del Coronado. The Moment in Oddity features a gold coin treasure and This Month in History features the Lincoln penny. Ep 500Ep. 500 - Mystic Mountains
Vast areas of the oceans have never been explored, but there are also places on the earth that have been left untouched. Particularly the mountains. Some are so high, men can only dream of scaling them. Others are so thick with vegetation, it is impossible to penetrate deeply. Fathomless mysteries are hidden within them. Several of these mountains have legends connected to them, making them mystical. Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman Redux
bonusThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a well known piece of fiction written by Washington Irving in 1819. Many of us first heard the story in our youth and the tale fueled our imagination with images of a headless horseman chasing a man through the forest, carrying a fiery pumpkin that represented his head. It was a terrifying tale. But is this just simply a piece of fiction? Is there some truth to the story? Headless figures are quite common in the world of the paranormal. And the setting for Irving's story is a real place with real locations mentioned in the tale. We've actually gotten to visit it and even paid our respects at the cemetery, which is Irving's final resting place. Ep 493Ep. 493 - St. Augustine Haunted House Investigation
A haunted house in the city of St. Augustine is not unique. It seems every location near the historic downtown is haunted. But this house was fairly new, being built in the 1980s. We conducted an investigation here that lends credence to the theory that any place can have unexplained activity, regardless of age. Perhaps it is because of the land. Maybe things that happened in the house left spiritual residue. Or its also possible that spirits gather somewhere because of people seeking to communicate with them. Join us as we investigate a small house just outside of the historic downtown of St. Augustine! The Moment in Oddity features Penny Treasure and This Month in History features death sentences halted. Ep 492Ep. 492 - Haunted Cemeteries 26
There really is no place quite as peaceful as a graveyard. The dead generally don't talk. Introverts don't have to pretend to read a book to remain undisturbed. Extraverts can take comfort in the fact that they are surrounded by a captive audience. Everyone can take solace in the idea that when they are gone, they will have a spot to keep their memory alive. Perhaps this is why so many of these cemeteries seem to be haunted. A spirit just wants to be near their memorial. Join us as we feature haunted cemeteries from England, Arkansas, Minnesota, Vermont, Florida, and Illinois! The Moment in Oddity features Got Milk? and This Month in History features the birth of Mildred J. Hill. Phantasmal Crime 16 - Walkup Family Murders
bonusThe Flagstaff of 1937 was quite different from the sleepy little railroad town it had once been. Emigrants from Boston had passed through this pine forest near the mountains in 1876 and marked their camp with a pine tree stripped of its bark and branches and crowned with an American flag in honor of the country's centennial. Their flag staff became a landmark and eventually the name of the town. By the 1930s, Flagstaff had become a thriving small town thanks to the local university, the Lowell Observatory and tourists coming to see the Grand Canyon. The wealthy side of town was on Leroux Street. And it was here on North Leroux Street that the Walkup family home was located.
