Nestled within the Canadian Rockies in southwest Alberta is Crowsnest Pass. The name is a translation of Native American words that meant "the nest of the crow." Crowsnest Pass is an area of stunning scenery, but also a place of tragedy, rum running, coal mining and was the home of the last woman to hang in Alberta. Westward expansion was pulling people from the east into the wild west. Oklahoma City was booming and it called to a man named William Skirvin. He built a hotel that has survived into today. The Skirvin Hotel was meant to be the most grandiose and fancy hotel in the area. And it was, hosting some of the luminaries of the day. Now it seems to be hosting spirits alongside the living. The Bastille is a former jail that dates back to the Wild West and ran as a jail for nearly 70 years. The building has had many iterations after it closed as a jail. This was an art gallery, a restaurant, a bar and a nightclub. Today, it stands empty and in need of major renovations. This may or may not please the current residents of the building, the ghosts. The Novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" was written by Harper Lee in 1960. The story details a black man accused wrongly of the rape of a white woman. It was as though Harper Lee had heard the true story of Robert Milton. Milton was a black man accused of rape by a white teenager in 1920s Mississippi. He was convicted and executed and most people believe he was an innocent man. Perhaps that is why he haunts the courthouse where he was hanged, the Old Tishomingo County Courthouse. The town of Abbeville in South Carolina is near the Georgia state line and hosted the last war council for Jefferson Davis. The Confederacy died in this town. The Winchester Mystery House or Winchester Mansion is one of the most unique and bizarre homes ever built. The mystery part of the name refers to the interior infrastructure. It truly is a mystery why certain elements were constructed. There are stairways that lead to nowhere and doors that open to walls and windows on the interior of the house. USS The Sullivans is berthed now at the Buffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park in New York. We learned a lot about USS The Sullivans when we toured the USS Yorktown in June 2024. It's a very different name for a ship and that's because it was named for five brothers who all died aboard the same ship when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II. The Bellaire House has a big reputation and is located in southeastern Ohio in the city for which it is named. The Crandell Murder shocked the nation. Sylvester Crandell shot his mother-in-law, his step-daughter, his wife and himself in 1887. This was the worst crime Saratoga County had experienced up to that point. All four people would die and the main motivation seems to have been money. Sylvester Crandell and wanted more of it and when his wife and mother-in-law wouldn't give it to him, his rage erupted. Prisons had once been thought of as just holding areas to punish people. In the late 1800s, a movement started that aspired to a higher ideal of reform, rather than punishment. The Outer Banks stretch for 200 miles from southeastern Virginia to Shackleford Banks in North Carolina. The Atlantic that borders its eastern side is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because of the hundreds of shipwrecks that have occurred here. We traveled much of this stretch on our recent road trip and took in many of the sites while learning about the history and legends of this area. A key figure in history connected to the Lower Islands of the Outer Banks was Blackbeard the pirate. He came to his violent end here. Dr. T. G. Hamilton was a trail blazer in the field of Paranormal Research. Seguin Island is an island off of Maine that has been a part of maritime history long before the American colonies were founded. The island can only be reached by boat, and is home to Maine's tallest and second oldest lighthouse, Seguin Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse is known by its more common name, Seguin Light, and not only dates back to the birth of America, but it carries a rich history that includes a gruesome tale. Old Sacramento is known as Sacramento's "Front Porch." The entire sector is protected as a National Landmark and for good reason. Much of California's early history is seated here. The town saw immense growth during the California Gold Rush and with that came death as well. Cholera epidemics swept through and fire and floods destroyed the place more than once. Old Sacramento had to be raised eighteen feet to prevent flooding, leaving behind underground tunnels. When we originally covered the General Lafayette Inn in early 2015, we named the episode after its then current incarnation: Barren Hill Tavern and Brewery. That endeavor closed in 2016 and was reopened as The General. That too closed, in January of 2020. Today, it is owned by business guru Michael M. There is over 400 years of history connected to Volusia County in Florida, including Native American residency, Spanish exploration, French colonization and British settlement. The Berrima Courthouse in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales in Australia is a great example of colonial architecture. The courthouse was a necessity as the colony was built on convicts and many continued their wayward deeds. The Morse Mill Hotel in Dittmer, Missouri has it all for history and ghost enthusiasts alike. This location has not only served as a private residence, tavern and inn, but also as a hospital for the Confederate wounded during the Civil War. And during Prohibition, this building was both a speakeasy and a brothel. A female serial killer has been connected to the Morse Mill Hotel as well. Fort Riley sits on the north bank of the Kansas River near Junction City in Kansas. The military installation has a history that stretches back more than 150 years. Early on, the soldiers' missions were to protect the overland trails that settlers were using to move west. Eventually, they protected the railways being built. The fort would eventually become important in training the cavalry and served as a training center for every major war. Today, it still is a working base with several museums dedicated to its history. Many locations reputedly have some strange things happening. The Plains of Abraham have known death. This is a historic area inside Battlefields Park in Quebec City, Canada. Before the park, this was a place few would wander as it had a reputation for being a hiding place for criminals. Then it became a spot for executions to be carried out. And that is why there is a female ghost that roams the Plains of Abraham. Everyone calls her La Corriveau. Hurricane Mills Rural Historic District is the name of Loretta Lynn's ranch in Tennessee. This is a large 3500-acre property that is basically its own little village. Loretta Lynn wasn't shy about telling people that her ranch was haunted. Loretta embraced the paranormal and even claimed to have her own psychic abilities. The world lost an amazingly talented singer and songwriter when she passed in October of 2022.
