The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds is the largest medical museum in the UK and takes guests on a journey through the history of medicine. There are exhibits about medical innovations and instruments, surgery in the 19th century, diseases and cures and the uniforms worn by medical personnel. Monthly lectures are hosted on topics ranging from "Questionable Quackery" to "Bloody Barbers and Splattered Surgeons." At the same time that the rural garden movement was launching and thriving in Victorian America, the Magnificent Seven were being established in London. The founding of these seven cemeteries was an effort to establish private cemeteries outside of London to alleviate the overcrowding in the city's churchyards. Small parish churchyards had provided burial space for hundreds of years, but with a burgeoning London population, burial space was shrinking and citizens were becoming worried about the unhealthy conditions. These new suburban cemeteries would be Kensal Green Cemetery, West Norwood Cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery, Brompton Cemetery, Nunhead Cemetery, and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. These cemeteries wouldn't get their nickname until 1981 and the name came from architectural historian Hugh Meller who was inspired by the 1960 western film "The Magnificent Seven." The USS Forrestal was one of the largest aircraft carriers ever built. She served for nearly four decades before being decommissioned in 1993 and then she was scrapped in 2015. During the Vietnam War, the carrier experienced a devastating tragedy with bombs on board the ship that led to several fires and over a hundred men dead. Murder is a ghastly matter. At the hands of a loved one, it truly becomes heinous. Most murder victims are murdered by someone they know and a high percentage are killed by either a lover or spouse. This is not a new statistic. History proves that to be a fact. Polstead, Suffolk, England was not a place where one would expect a murder to occur, particularly in 1827. But a crime of passion did take place here and a young woman was left dead. The horrifying murder was nicknamed the "Red Barn Murder" because of the location of the murder. The paranormal takes center stage in the solving of this case as the victim's stepmother was visited by her spirit at night, three times. The Merchant's House Museum at 29 East Fourth Street in Manhattan is a relic from the past making it a treasure in New York City. Carlinville is a small town stop along the original Route 66 and is located in Macoupin County, Illinois. The town is home to the "Million Dollar" Courthouse, which seems a bit out of place because it is so massive and cost so much to build. The Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky was so beautiful and iconic that it inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." Many a murder case has been won in court on just circumstantial evidence. This is true of present day cases and it was true back in the 1840s when a man named David Sheely lost his life at the end of a hangman's rope. Many believe he was an innocent man. And perhaps that is why his ghost haunted people for decades after his hanging. Sheely certainly isn't unique. Through the centuries, many wrongly convicted people have been put to death. It's one of the reasons why many people don't support the death penalty. There are many stories of murder victims coming back as spirits to find justice. Is it possible that wrongfully executed people have ghosts that return as well? And what of the truly guilty? Do they not make the transition out of fear? Do their spirits stay as they seek penance? The Old Montana Prison is said to be the most haunted location in Southwest Montana. This was a state prison that was used for over 100 years and was the first Territorial Prison in the western part of the United States. The prison closed in 1979 and has reopened as a venue with multiple museums, the main one being the prison itself. The Aiken Rhett House is located in Charleston, South Carolina. This is a partially restored house museum that can be toured and was a home that remained in the Aiken family for 142 years. A few years after Mount Auburn Cemetery was established, the city of Bangor in the state of Maine would follow its lead. Mount Hope Cemetery would become the second rural cemetery established in America. Bangor was named for the oldest city in Wales and is the "Queen City" of Maine. At the time that the cemetery was established, the city was known as the "Lumber Capitol of the World." And while the city was quite successful, its burial grounds were in bad shape. Many were abandoned and unkempt and the ones that were still being used were overcrowded. Bangor's mayor in 1834 even declared that the cemeteries caused a "soul chilling experience." This would change as the city decided to try its hand at this new garden cemetery experiment. In April 2018, Diane visited Waverly Hills Sanatorium for the first time and several listeners joined her on a tour of the place. The group experienced some unexplained things and Diane has been dying to get back and show me the place. Covid thwarted our plan to investigate privately with a group of listeners in April 2020. The Occidental Hotel is a historic hotel in the town of Buffalo, Wyoming. The area was once a thoroughfare for those seeking treasure during the Gold Rush or a new life during Westward Expansion. That made it attractive for outlaws too. The town was the setting for A&E's drama "Longmire." The Occidental Hotel was heavily trafficked for a while and then went bust, almost leading to the wrecking ball. Today, it has been restored to a grand hotel once again, giving guests a chance to go back in time to the old west. And just like so many tales of the Old West, this one has a ghost story or two. The Black Donnellys were an Irish family looking for a new start across the Atlantic Ocean in the early 1840s. James and Johannah Donnelly had lived in poverty and strife and they hoped that Canada would bring a new start for their little family. So they packed up what little they had, along with their son James, Jr., and migrated to Forest City, Canada from Tipperary, Ireland. They would find a new life in this new world, but they would not gain it in the right way. They would take what was not theirs and this would lead to strife for their family. It would eventually lead to a lot of death as well. And now spirits roam the former Donnelly homestead. Beijing is a city with over 3,000 years of recorded history. Not only is this a city with a rich history, it has a rich culture, some of which is surrounded by folklore and the supernatural. There are several haunted locations in this capital city of China. Chaonei (Chow nay) No. 81 is found in the Dongcheng District and is a unique brick structure with an obscure history that seems to be mostly connected to the Catholic church. No one really knows why it is haunted, but it is said to be one of the most haunted locations in China. There is the Huguang Guild Hall, a haunted theater. The Baker Hotel is known as The Grand Old Lady and is located in Mineral Wells, Texas, a town named for the mineral springs in the area. In the early 1900s, the city became a place for those seeking healing from the curative effects of the mineral springs. To provide lodging for these guests, the Baker Hotel was built by Theadore Baker. For years, this once grand resort sat decaying, but today it is undergoing extensive renovations with a plan to reopen in 2026. We have to wonder what the many spirits here have to say about that. The Olde Park Hotel has stood for over 130 years in Ballinger, Texas, which is known as the Greatest Little Town in Texas. From the outside, the hotel looks pretty unpretentious, but it has a storied history. The building has housed not only a hotel, but a brothel, a boarding house, school, restaurant and antique store. La Purísima Mission is located in Lompoc, California. The Spanish mission once covered nearly 300,000 acres and was established to evangelize the local indigenous people known as the Chumash. The mission was successful with as many as 24,000 cattle and sheep and over 2,000 people. There was a major earthquake and the Chumash eventually revolted and the mission was abandoned. We originally featured the Island Hotel and Restaurant in Cedar Key, Florida back on Ep. 36 in 2015. In November 2024, we stayed overnight and did a little investigating and while our experiences were subtle, it does seem that paranormal activity does occur here. The building was originally built in 1859 and used as a general store and it was built to last. The building material that was used was Tabby, which is a mixture of oyster shells, sand and limestone, and the structure has lasted 165 years. The most recent hurricanes to hit the area, particularly Hurricane Helene, only caused slight wind damage to the structure. The building has passed through the hands of many owners, some of whom may still remain in the afterlife. People claim there are as many as thirteen ghosts here. The rest of Cedar Key did not fair well during Hurricane Helene, but we still enjoyed the surroundings of what seems to be a very haunted island. Salem, Massachusetts' Gardner-Pingree House was the scene of a horrific murder. In 1830, this had been one of the grandest houses in Salem and was owned by Captain Joseph White. On the night of April 6th, he was bludgeoned and stabbed to death. This event and the ensuing trial featured some prominent names. Daniel Webster was the prosecutor and writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and H.P. Lovecraft were all inspired by elements from this true crime. Such a horrific murder can lead to rumors of hauntings. And several ghosts seem to be at unrest in the aftermath. The historic Tampa Bay Hotel is stunning and very different from its surroundings. Downtown Tampa Bay pierces the skyline with skyscrapers and other elements of the typical metropolis concrete jungle. The old hotel features Moorish and Turkish architecture. The Andrew Low House is located in Savannah, Georgia and is a beautifully restored 19th century home that sits in the heart of Savannah's historic district. A sculpted and well-cared-for garden leads guests to a door that opens in to a part of the history of a Scottish immigrant, Andrew Low, who left his mark on the city and also the woman who founded the Girl Scouts, his daughter-in-law Juliette Gordon Low. Now in the afterlife, it seems that both of these individuals are still connected to the house. The most unexplored areas of the earth are its vast waterways. Humans can't breath underwater and thus our explorations of the seas are very limited. We often wonder if stories about mysterious and sometimes ferocious sea creatures are inspired by our imaginings of what could be below the surface of the water or if they are based on true experiences. When deep sea explorations do manage to send back pictures, some very unique and weird creatures are revealed. The McCormick Ranch is located in a remote part of the Eastern Plains in Stratton, Colorado. Mike McCormick and his father worked the property with the help of homeless men they hired during the 1980s. No one can be sure if these homeless men were actually paid for their work because many of them ended up dead. The ranch was the perfect place for serial killers to do their dastardly deeds as no one would hear the victims scream. Several bodies were found on the property, but not all of them, and that may be why this ranch is crawling with paranormal activity.
