Sermon | Free for Life (Ephesians 4)

Why bother going to church? Is church just a spiritual pick-me-up, a Sunday habit, or something far more? In this sermon, Pastor Richard Lee challenges us to rethink not only why we show up to church, but how we show up - and what might be missing when we don't. If you've ever felt like a spectator in your own faith, this one's for you. · ·👉🏻 Check out other Highrock sermons: https://tinyurl.com/3rdw4x8n👉🏻 Check out Highrock's 15-min daily devotionals: https://tinyurl.com/38d4aryd

Daily Devo | The Gardener and the Wild Olive Branches (Romans 11:16-24)

Many of Paul's listeners might hear Paul to be saying that the Gentiles are replacing Israel. That would be a misunderstanding! Rather, Gentiles are like wild branches being grafted into a cultivated tree. No matter who we are, our inclusion is not a birthright or something God owes to us. Instead, our connection must always be one of gratitude and humility!Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:Paul has been addressing the question of Israel. We are now two-and-a-half chapters into his three chapter answer.- After two-and-a-half chapters, how do you understand the spiritual relationship between Gentiles, Jews, and Israel as a people? How might you explain this idea to a children's Sunday school class? Just as importantly, what are some of the questions that remain? (And there might be many!)- What encouragement do you take from this passage, that you are like a wild branch that was grafted into the gardener's cultivated tree?

Daily Devo | Love It or Lose It (Romans 11:7-15)

Sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it. That, says Paul, was the situation for Israel. Sometimes we, too, forget the privilege it is to know God in Christ! Israel's failure to value the gift of God serves as a warning to all who might be tempted to take God's grace for granted.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:Many in Israel had lost what they had taken for granted. Treating their spiritual privilege as a birthright caused them to lose sight of its incredible value.- Have you ever taken a blessing for granted? Perhaps it was a possession, a position, or even a person? What happened, and what were the consequences of taking that blessing for granted?- How do you avoid taking good things for granted? How do you refresh your appreciation and gratitude for God and the blessings of God?

Daily Devo | You Are Not Alone! (Romans 11:1-6)

The continuing place of Israel in God's plan might seem like an academic discussion but for Paul, it was deeply personal. He brings up the story of Elijah, who at one point thought he was the only person left who had not abandoned the God of Israel for other gods. But God was with Elijah, along with several thousand others who had remained faithful. Paul likely felt similarly at times. But no matter how alone we might feel at any given moment, we are not alone. God is with us, and so are many others! Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:Paul's reference to Elijah is found in 1 Kings 19. Elijah felt so alone and depressed that he was barely able to continue on.- Have you ever felt alone in following God in your family or your community? Have you ever felt like being faithful to God led to a place of hopelessness? What happened? What, if anything, helped bring you out of that pit of despair?- Elijah was reminded that he was not alone. Elijah's story was likely a reminder to Paul that he was not alone. What or who can help remind you that you are not alone?

Daily Devo | Jealous? (Romans 10:14-21)

Can jealousy ever be a good thing? Over a thousand years before Jesus, God told Israel that they would one day become jealous of the Gentiles for the spiritual blessings that they would be enjoying. Even today, Jesus can showcase blessings through his followers so that others will be provoked to desire what God is offering not just to a select few, but graciously to all!Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:Sometimes, we discover what we truly desire only when we see it being enjoyed by others.- Have you ever been jealous of a good thing you saw someone else enjoying? In particular, did that desire ever cause you to make a choice or a change to gain that same experience for yourself? Recall and describe that process.- Is there someone in your life who you wish would draw closer to Christ? How might you prayerfully invite them to witness and experience the good things shared by those who follow Jesus?

Daily Devo | Anyone? Anyone! (Romans 10:5-13)

Have you ever wondered how God feels about you? Have you ever wondered if you're good enough, smart enough, or loving enough to be acceptable to God? The Apostle Paul is clear that many had made the answers to these questions far too complicated. Who will be acceptable to God? Who will God rescue from the darkness of this world? "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!"Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Repenting of Good Things (Romans 9:30-10:4)

When can a good thing be bad? When it gets in the way of something more important. In this case, our own good behavior can become a bad thing if it leads us to trust in our own goodness rather than the grace of God. Such "goodness" becomes self-righteousness that produces resentment rather than love, entitlement rather than gratitude. We must repent and turn away from making any good thing a substitute for the love of God in Jesus Christ.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:Jesus becomes a stumbling block whenever we make anything, even a good thing like faithful obedience, into a substitute for the love and grace of God.- Have you ever felt that you deserved something good from God more than someone else? What was the good thing in you that you thought made you more deserving of God's love?- The older brother in the parable of the prodigal (Luke 15:11-32) was angry because he felt that he was more deserving of the father's love. What might help him, or you, celebrate rather than resent his "less-deserving" sibling?

Daily Devo | My People (Romans 9:25–29)

Who are your people? This question was central for the church in Rome and for Paul's entire ministry! Which matters more -- physical lineage from Israel or the offer of grace extended to all people? As difficult as it might be to accept, God had long declared that God's people would be a collection of those who responded to the promises of God in faith. Whatever might seek to divide us, God calls us to be united by the love of God in Jesus Christ!Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | What About Him?! (John 21:20-25)

After Jesus restores Peter, you might imagine that he would be filled with gratitude, despite the warning about the way he would one day die as a martyr for Jesus. Instead, we see Peter turn around immediately and ask regarding John, "What about him?" Comparison kills joy and community. Daily Devo | Do You Love Me? (John 21:15-19)

Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love me?" and each time, Peter says "Yes." By the time Jesus asks Peter a third time, Peter is hurt by the question. If you were to have a supernatural encounter with God, where do you imagine it might happen? Probably not at a campfire cook-out on the beach! -- Note: No devo tomorrow, April 30. We'll be at a staff overnight retreat --That Easter Sunday evening, Jesus appeared amongst the fearful disciples. Daily Devo | Secret Disciples (John 19:38-42)

Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilate to request the body of Jesus. Joseph was a member of Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, but he was a secret disciple out of fear of the other religious leaders. Daily Devo | The Kindness of Clarity (John 19:31-37)

The soldiers saw that Jesus was clearly already dead. Just to be sure, a soldier pierced Jesus' side with a spear. Daily Devo | The Crucified King? (John 19:16-24)

The Jewish people had been waiting for the Messiah, a promised king, for centuries. They knew that he would be a descendant of King David, which Jesus was, but how could a crucified Jesus possible be the king they were expecting? But as the Gospel of John shows us, the crucifixion was not a mark against Jesus being the long-expected savior. When Pilate considers that Jesus might be more than human, it strikes him with fear. Even so, he is even more afraid of Caesar. The religious leaders are no different, saying to Pilate, "We have no king but Caesar!" Who determines what is right in our lives? Who sets the priorities? Daily Devo | Loving Opposition (John 19:1-7)

How do we respond to those who oppose and betray us? The Roman guards took delight in their cruelty to Jesus. Pilate simply wanted to wash his hands of it all. But Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, though they would soon abandon him. He also washed the feet of Judas, who would soon betray him. And Jesus then told them to love one another as Jesus had loved. At the end of his prayer, Jesus moves beyond himself and his closest disciples to all those who will believe because of their message. In other words, he prays for us! In the meantime, are we taking seriously this earnest desire of Jesus?Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | Who Has God Given You to Love? (John 17:9-19)

In the second part of his extended prayer, Jesus prays for those closest to him, referring to them as those whom God had given him. He prays for their unity and their protection. Daily Devo | Praying Like Jesus (John 17:1-8)

This chapter is one of the rare insights we have into how Jesus prayed. That insight is also an invitation for us to join Jesus and make his prayer our own. Like Jesus, we can bring glory to God by completing the work that God gives us to do and also to give others a clearer picture of God by how we live and love. Daily Devo | In My Name (John 16:23-33)

Building on his desire that his disciples would not lose their faith or their joy, Jesus reveals an even greater truth to them. Daily Devo | Pain with a Purpose (John 16:12-22)

Even relatively minor pains that lack purpose and predictability can cause intense suffering -- chronic headaches, for instance. In contrast, much greater pains can actually lead to joy. Jesus uses the example of childbirth. Thought very intense, it is only for a time and it leads to something wonderful! In the same way, Jesus wants his disciples to know that their pain will end and lead to even greater joy.Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Daily Devo | A Warning and a Promise (John 16:1-11)

Jesus continues to warn his disciples that bad times are coming. This warning is not meant to help them avoid the danger -- that would be impossible. Instead, they might remember that God is in control even in the darkest times. In fact, it is better that Jesus should leave because it is the only way for us to receive God's Spirit. Daily Devo | Persecution or Paranoia? (John 15:18-27)

Jesus warns his disciples that they will face persecution. The same world that persecutes Jesus will also persecute his followers. Daily Devo | Stay Right Here! (John 15:9-17)

As Jesus continues to share with the disciples after the last supper, he shares his deepest desire is that they remain in his love (v9). Daily Devo | You're Going to Get Cut! (John 15:1-8)

Jesus proclaims to his disciples that he is the true vine, we are the branches, and God the Father is the gardener who tends the vine. Some branches fail to produce fruit and are cut away. Some branches produce fruit and are pruned to produce even more. Either way, you're going to get cut! Daily Devo | The Way, The Truth, and the Life (John 14:1-11)

Jesus has already said that he is the "resurrection and the life" (John 11:26). Here he claims also to be "the way" -- the only way to the Father. But what does it mean that he is "the truth"? A listener today might also find Jesus' claim to be the only way to be offensive and close-minded. Is Jesus' declaration meant to be divisive, or invitational? Looking for a previous devo? Want to share one with a friend? Start here:https://www.highrock.org/daily-devotionals/For Reflection:"I am the way, the truth, and the life." Daily Devo | Love Because You are Loved (John 13:31-38)

Jesus gives his disciples a new command -- to love one another as he has loved them. They had already known God's command to love one another. What was new about the command was Jesus' example. They were not only to love one another, but love one another in the way that Jesus was loving them. Daily Devo | To Follow Jesus is to Serve (John 13:12-20)

Jesus is our teacher and lord -- that is true. But Jesus is also our servant, which he proves by washing the feet of the disciples. Every good thing finds its fullness in Jesus and he wants us to share in this ultimate blessing, which is why he calls us to do likewise.
