The Jewish people had been waiting for the Messiah, a promised king, for centuries. They knew that he would be a descendant of King David, which Jesus was, but how could a crucified Jesus possible be the king they were expecting? But as the Gospel of John shows us, the crucifixion was not a mark against Jesus being the long-expected savior. Instead, the crucifixion was precisely how he would save us, and indeed, long-foretold by King David himself!

For Reflection:

The charge written above Jesus' head, "King of the Jews", was likely intended to be an ironic jab at the religious leaders rather than a declaration of faith.

- Many people wondered how a crucified criminal could possibly be the promised Messiah. How do you see today's text addressing those concerns?

- Jesus' victory and God's plan was accomplished through what appeared to be a total defeat. How might you be able to take this moment with you so that you can trust God in dark moments in your own story?
