Pt. 4 | Sam Thayer - Cultivating and Caretaking the Ecosystems We Call Home
This episode was recorded at the event 'Planting the Future: Medicinal Plant Conservation in the Driftless Region' hosted by United Plant Savers on August 12, 2017 in Wisconsin. Thank you to Sam Thayer and Susan Leopold for sharing this! Beyond, sustainable harvest, we look at the long-term future of our landscape, and the special role that plant gatherers have in maintaining its ecology and prosperity. We'll talk about the threats and historical changes to our ecosystems, and discuss strategies to work and grow past them. We can do more than just "reduce our impact"—we can be a positive force to create and maintain vibrant and diverse communities of native plants that are at once productive for us and a paradise for wildlife. Nurturing the land that nurtures us. The Driftless Area will be used as an example for ecological and management concepts that apply everywhere. We'll explore some traditional, mutually beneficial relationships between Native peoples and the plants that support them, and discuss practical techniques for implementing this kind of harmony on our own sacred gathering grounds. Working from the six tissue states and teachings of the physiomedicalists, this system is both intuitive and clinically accurate. To observe patterns of disease we need to observe patterns in nature first to grasp harmonies and disharmonies. Winds that dry, waters that swell, heat that rises, cold that depresses are all vital expressions of nature that play out in our organs, joints, muscles, thoughts and spirit. This is the practice of traditional folk herbalism where nature is observed and the inherent self-regulating systems of the body are acknowledged and supported. Marketing for Herbalists | Erika Galentin
The Marketing as Gardening Course presented by Sovereignty Herbs LEARN MORE AND REGISTER Register by August 25, 2022 for an early bird bonus! Do you feel lost when it comes to marketing your herbal services such as consultations, free clinics, workshops, herb walks, and online classes? Do you feel like you're doing (or not doing) something that everyone else is doing successfully (and maybe thinking 'I guess I just don't have a green thumb for this')? It's easy to get discouraged by ALL THE THINGS we are supposed to be doing ALL THE TIME to market our herbal services. Updating social media, sending out emails, answering direct messages, creating and printing flyers…the list goes on and on and on and…. New marketing technology leads us to believe that it should be easy to promote and book out our herbal services using this simple formula: open app + add a visual + say something ~very~ important = sell out your workshop. Repeat. But if it were that easy, why do so many of us only get crickets? Why isn't anyone signing up (and why can't I get that darn basil to grow)? The fact is we shouldn't all be vying for the same audience – especially when we want as many people to have access to herbalism as possible (and no, this is not another class on boosting your social media followers and likes, it's much bigger than that)... We shouldn't have to copy other's successes because we are struggling with our own—when we tap into our own authenticity we shine! Sometimes the most jaw-dropping gardens are the wildest and least conventional... We shouldn't be burning out on churning out new content again and again…we can compost and rework our creative content to form a consistent message that nourishes our success as herbal educators and practitioners…. We shouldn't have to beg people to be in our programs – our biggest fans will show up and stick with us (just like those friends that come over and absolutely love galavanting around your garden with you smelling and tasting and seeing all the beautiful things). Trying to promote your herbal services may be an overwhelming task - the outcome of which often feels out of our control. But it doesn't have to be. While the tools of marketing have evolved and will continue to evolve, the core principles of how to be successful are still the same….kinda' like gardening. LEARN MORE AND REGISTER

KEYNOTE: New Herbal Uses in the 21st Century | Howie Brounstein
Today's episode is Howie Brounstein's keynote from the 2019 Breitenbush Herbal Conference. We were lucky enough to find out a former student of Howie's was in the audience and they recorded it from their phone. Since it was recorded on a phone, the audio is a wee bit wonky. That said, Howie did take some time to clean up the sound a bit. It's definitely listenable and there are many gems and takeaways! I had the honor of being co-organizer of this event and was so thrilled that Howie gave the first keynote to kick off the weekend. This was right before Rising Appalachia took the stage! Howie was my first herbal mentor (along with Steven Yeager). He is the owner and lead instructor at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. If you're looking for an herbalism apprenticeship with a heavy focus on botany, wildcrafting, herbalism and anatomy and physiology, I can't recommend his school enough. Traditional Incense Crafting by Evan Sylliaasen
Learn more and register for The Botanical Resins Workshop Series Resins can be an overlooked substance when it comes to herbalism. They're common in aromatherapy, incense and perfumery, but what about the rest of their countless benefits? Resins can be used in balms, salves, liniments, creams, serums, massage oils, body butters and so on. The ancient systems of medicine treasured resins so much and often referred to them as "liquid gold," and "food of the gods". Resins have been prized over the ages for their use in beauty products and skin care preparations, and of course, for their aromas… We're excited to share an amazing new series – which is ALL about resins – from our friend Evan, founder of The Northwest School of Aromatic Medicine. It's called The Botanical Resins Workshop Series. In this free course he's making it a point to talk about the many different ways resins can be used. He'll help you see why resins are so precious and often have MORE medicine and aromatics than a lot of other botanicals you might be working with. He's also going to walk you through how to make infused resin oils and resin-based salves that can be used for superior first aid, skin care, and much more. Join this complimentary workshop and start watching the first lesson now. This fun and informative series is available for a limited time so be sure to sign up today! Hope you enjoy
