What Is the Most Common Missing Nutrient?

At the Kahn Center patients have extensive nutrition testing. The most common missing nutrient is...Omega-s long chain fatty acids like EPA and DHA. Are you deficient? It is likely and you can be tested. The cleaning source of raising your blood and tissue levels is to adopt a daily habit of 2 tablespoons a day of ground flaxseed while lowering or eliminating added oils.

Protein as King? The Crown is Tarnished

I cringe when I get asked what protein I want on my salad, already heaped with beans. We have been led to believe that the more protein the better, particularly if it is grilled chicken. New data this week shows that diets low in methionine, a building block of proteins, influence metabolism in mice and humans and may assist cancer therapy (in mice). What foods are low in methionine? Plant foods, of course.

The Queen's Report: Cut the Saturated Fat Foods

Today a scientific panel to the UK (with the Queen's seal) published a 220 page report updating a 1994 report. Their review of the world literature concluded that butter, cheese, eggs and meats are NOT back. The 1994 recommendation to limit the % of calories from saturated fats remains at 10% or less in 2019. The risk of heart disease remains real and the preferred approach to substitute plant foods like beans for beef is the recommendation. Thank you, Queen.

3 New Reasons to Avoid Red Meat

I promise you: if red meat healed your health issues, I would report the science as it was. Yet, we know that increased red meat is associated with heart disease, cancer, diabetes and death. These past few weeks provided 3 more reasons to avoid red meat. These include the research on the meat rich Paleo diet and increased levels in the blood of TMAO. It also included more data about the concerning spread of the Lone Star tick and meat allergies. Finally, humans are not mice and we do not make neu5Gc. It turns out we have antibodies to neu5Gc from eating red meat from other species which is rich in neu5GC and creates inflammation and atherosclerosis. Overall, eat whole plant foods and your health will be protected.

Shocking News About Sexual Health: A New Therapy to Share

The first man on the moon, the first mile under 4 minutes, the first person to pull on a cow's udder and drink it (the last one is a classic Mel Brooks joke). It takes a pioneer to carve new territory in any field. Well how about the first researcher that took a shock wave device originally designed to break up rock hard kidney stones and put it on his own penis to see if blood and nerve growth would occur? Another pioneer. Indeed, this happened and the world is better for it as a new therapy of heart disease and erectile dysfunction was developed. The science of low intensity shock wave therapy is discussed this week. We offer GainsWAVE therapy at the Kahn Center on this edition of Heart Doc VIP on Empower Radio.

Nature vs Nurture: You Are in Charge of Your Health

Dr. Kahn gets asked so often by patients if they are "trapped" by a family history of disease, heart, cancer, dementia and such. New data this week is the topic and the majority of the risk of diseases like diabetes type 2 and others are in OUR control, not genetic control. The word is lifestyle medicine. Food choices, exercise choices, sleep patterns, stress management, social support, smoking or not, and love and joy are able to speak to our genetic material and favor health and longevity. What Is the 3rd Leading Cause of Death in the USA?

There is some "good" news that is out but it is shocking for sure. The third leading cause of death overall in the USA is medical errors made in hospitals during treatment. Estimates from 200,000 to 400,000 deaths a year occur due to mistakes. Even more shocking is that the number of people seriously harmed that do not die may be 10-20 times higher! A brand new report suggests that number may have dropped to 161,000 deaths in the USA but still a gross and distressing number. If you can, stay out of hospitals. If you are in the hospital, have family members stay with you, even if overnight.

What to do When Science Conflicts Our View?

Is Diary Healthy? Dr. Kahn has a bias. Dr. Kahn thinks the data for consuming a whole food plant diet, organic if possible, is the optimal diet for the human population, the planet, and the rights of animals. What does he do when data is published suggested that his framework may not be accurate? This week a report suggested inadequate dairy may contribute to a significant number of cases of colorectal cancer. Dr. Kahn had many emails and calls about this. What to do when that data causes conflict? We will look honestly and openly at nutrition science on this edition of Heart Doc VIP on Empower Radio.

A Visit to PaleoFX: Why?

Last weekend Dr. Kahn was in Austin, Texas to visit his food truck (ATX Food Co. on Barton Springs Road) and to participate on a panel at the largest conference on the Paleo Diet. Why? This was not "his crowd" and he knows that certain members in the auditorium were not happy he was included. The discussion with other health care providers was animated but also revealing as to the difficulty getting credible information based in science. Paleo, not for Dr. Kahn, maybe not for anyone.
