Dumbledore and Voldemort are widely regarded as the pinnacle of magical power, standing at the very top of the wizarding hierarchy. Their mastery of spells, dueling prowess, and profound understanding of magic set them apart from nearly all other witches and wizards in history. While still just a boy, Dumbledore performed magic that his professors "had never seen before,", and in adulthood, he cemented his place as the most powerful wizard of his time, mastering disciplines of magic that others could barely comprehend. Years later, Voldemort followed suit, displaying unnatural magical talent from a young age. Even before formal training, he could move objects, control animals, and manipulate the minds of others through sheer will. As an adult, Voldemort's magic became unmatched in both brutality and innovation. He pushed spellcraft to its limits and became the only known wizard to split his soul multiple times. It's fairly safe to say that these two were leaps and bounds ahead of their peers and entirely deserving of their reputations as two of the most powerful wizards in history. But what if I told you that another wizard - one just as powerful, if not more so, than both of these men - once walked the very same halls of Hogwarts that they did, but somehow doesn't get nearly the same recognition? The Sacred Twenty-Eight is a "Pure-Blood Directory" published in the first half of the twentieth century that outlines the wizarding world's most pure-blooded magical families – which is to say, the witches and wizards whose ancestors had not "muddied" their blood lines with Muggle integration. Within the wizarding society, blood purity has been a longstanding source of division and prejudice, and the assertion that some wizarding families were more "pure" than others (because their bloodline remained purely magical) is not received well by most in Wizarding Society. Regardless of this, pure-bloods believe they are somehow better - more powerful, more deserving - simply because their lineage has remained untouched by Muggle blood. And while many wizarding families (even some on the Sacred 28 list) reject this idea as outdated and elitist, many others, like the Malfoys and the Blacks, wear their pure-blood status like a badge of honour, ensuring that their family trees remain free of Muggle influence. And the same can be said for many others on this list. But if we dissect the Sacred Twenty-Eight more closely, there's something... odd about it, and it's the fact that the Weasleys are on the list. Unlike the Malfoys, who openly embraced their pure-blood superiority, the Weasleys are known for their progressive attitudes - welcoming half-bloods, Muggle-borns, and even Muggles themselves. They openly reject pure-blood supremacy, and yet... their family history, even as recent as Molly and Arthur, tells a different story. Is it possible that the Weasleys are simply no better than the families they claim to be so different from? One thing that's always dawned on me is how shocking it must be for the parents of muggleborns to receive news of the magical world. And as if coming to terms with the existence of an entire magical world isn't difficult enough already, they're then expected to entrust the safety of their children to a bunch of complete strangers in a world that they not only have no understanding of, but have also just been introduced to. Oh, and let's not forget the cherry on top: once your child leaves, you're expected to keep the whole thing a secret. Don't tell your friends, your neighbors, or anyone else - because the magical world doesn't exist as far as the rest of society is concerned. Given how difficult it must be for the parents of muggle-born students to come to terms with this reality, I'd be willing to bet that there has been more than one instance of parents REFUSING (at least, initially) to send their child to the school. After all, what GOOD parent wouldn't worry about sending their child off to an unfamiliar, hidden world filled with unknown dangers and rules they don't understand? I know my mum would take issue...At least, until she learns a bit more about it. Hey everyone, Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing The Philosopher's Stone, Hogwarts professor Quirinus Quirrell, Lord Voldemort, and of course- Harry Potter. After returning home from his trip, Quirrell didn't reprise his previous role of Muggle Studies professor; instead, he had been given the coveted position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor - a subject that had been notoriously cursed for years. And although Dumbledore, ever watchful, was wary of Quirrell's drastic transformation, he lacked concrete evidence and thus permitted the young professor to carry out his duties. And the year Quirrell assumed the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor coincidentally aligned with Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts. Very early on in Harry's magical adventures, he stops at the Leaky Cauldron with Hagrid, where he has his first encounter with Quirrell - a meeting that, at the time, seemed unremarkable but would later prove to be far more significant. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing RETCONS- specifically, all of the RETCONS made by JK Rowling after the Harry Potter series had ended. I should start off by making a clear distinction between what retcon USED to mean and what it means now, because somehow the term has evolved over time into something else altogether. Depending on which version of 'Retcon' you subscribe to, you're going to have very different expectations for this list. The ORIGINAL interpretation of Retcon, which stands for 'Retroactive Continuity', referred broadly to adding new information to previously told stories to expand or reinterpret the narrative. A good example of this would be JK Rowling revealing (through extended publications) that Witches and wizards VANISHED THEIR POOP via magic before the Hogwarts plumbing system came into effect.- And the more commonly understood modern definition of retcon refers specifically to changes that contradict previously established facts in the narrative, whether intentional or unintentional. The distinction here is that this interpretation places an emphasis on these new facts conflicting with existing canon. A third definition I found online seems to support either: 'a literary device in which facts in the world of a fictional work that have been established through the narrative itself are adjusted, ignored, supplemented, or contradicted by a subsequently published work that recontextualizes or breaks continuity with the former.' But for the sake of today's video, we're going to separate them, first placing our sights on works that CONTRADICT the source material, then shifting our perspective to more recently introduced content that SUPPLEMENTS the source material (but doesn't change it). There are quite a few mistakes and plot holes in the Harry Potter books and films. In fact, there are enough for me to make several compilations of them. However, perhaps one of the most confusing and inconsistent elements of the Wizarding World is undoubtedly the 'Trace'- a fairly major plot component that is riddled with contradictions.- To the Harry Potter casual, these issues with the Trace probably went by relatively unnoticed, but for the die-hards, it was hard to ignore the glaringly obvious ways in which the trace was misrepresented. There are also many components of the trace that are never explained- like how it is actually applied to underage witches and wizards. Today, we'll be diving deep into the Trace - exploring what it is, how it's applied to children, and, through examples from the books and films, uncovering why this concept is essentially a total trainwreck. From the moment HBO's new Harry Potter TV Series was announced in April of 2023, fans of the series have been buzzing with questions and excitement. Questions like..What will the series be about? Will it stay true to the original books? And most importantly, who will be in charge of the project? And since then, a lot of these questions have been answered.- But perhaps the biggest lingering question mark surrounding the series pertains to casting. Because you see, so much of the Harry Potter films success was a direct result of the incredible casting decisions that were made.- For many of the roles it's almost impossible to imagine ANYONE else undertaking them. But..Showrunners for the upcoming series have the behemoth task of finding people anyway. Back in September an open casting call was announced for 3 of the most important characters in the series- Harry, Ron and Hermione. And for these roles, I can almost certainly tell you that it will be relatively unknown actors that end up taking on the characters. Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In what seems like just the last couple of years (but in reality has spanned nearly a DECADE), Warner Bros. has faced some challenges when releasing new Harry Potter IP- particularly the "Fantastic Beasts" film series. These high-budget films which dropped in 2016, 2018, and 2022 respectively struggled to find traction at the global box office and didn't quite hit the mark for most fans. And for these reasons, it's unlikely that the Fantastic Beasts films will ever continue, stopping 2 films shy of the 5 film projection originally provided.- However, Warner Bros. found a bright spot in 2023 with the release of Hogwarts Legacy, which seemed to really strike a chord with Harry Potter fans worldwide. The game topped sales charts as the best-selling game of 2023 across ALL platforms and ALL genres- beating out Call of Duty, Madden, Zelda, Diablo and more. And since the game's release over 30 MILLION copies have been sold. Encouraged by this success, Warner Bros. Games released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions in August, remastered the Lego Harry Potter game collection, and granted licenses for several new mobile games. But the biggest bit of news is that a Hogwarts Legacy SEQUEL has apparently become a 'very big priority'. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. This is part 1 of a video series where I'll be diving in to the Harry Potter books and taking a look, chapter by chapter, at all of the mistakes that were made. Starting with book 1: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I'm going to be placing a particular focus on instances in which factual errors were made or canon was somehow contradicted. Trivial errors like typos / grammatical issues will not be focused on this video. I should also mention that I'm not making this video to CRITICIZE the books, but rather, take a look out of my own curiosity. Authors are only human and nearly every book series has mistakes like these made in them. Rowling has even addressed this topic herself: "As obsessive fans will tell you, I do slip up! Several classrooms move floors mysteriously between books and these are the least serious continuity errors! Most of the fansites will point you in the direction of my mistakes. But the essentials remain consistent from book to book because the story has been plotted for a long time and it is clear in my mind."
