These cursed objects, created through an unnamed and forbidden process, are known for their ability to fragment the soul, preserving it beyond death, and granting the creator an impenetrable shield of immortality. However, the creation of these sinister objects comes at an unthinkable cost, leading us to wonder what dark magic and sacrilege went into their making. What unspeakable rituals did Voldemort undertake to achieve his twisted form of immortality? How did the creation of each Horcrux alter his soul, turning him further down the path of darkness? And what mysteries lie buried within the shattered remnants of his fragmented soul? Today we're going to be exploring all of that, and more, as we uncover the truth behind the horrific dark magic that produces Horcruxes. Horcruxes, said to be one of two things from the Harry Potter books that made JK Rowling's editor nearly VOMIT, are still very much an enigma to this day. The very first known Horcrux was made in Ancient Greece by a wizard named Herpo the Foul, and thousands of years later, Voldemort became only the second known creator of a Horcrux. Made from magic that is so terrible in nature that even dark wizards are horrified by what it entails, Horcruxes are creations that are unimaginable to the vast majority of the Wizarding World. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be taking a look at five Draco Malfoy theories that have recently caught my eye.- To start, I'd like to acknowledge that there are loads of debates out there between fans as to whether Malfoy was a redeemable character or not. There seems to be two very distinct camps – one that believes Draco was a snake at the beginning of the series, and an even bigger snake at the end; and another that believes he was simply brought up in an environment of hate but was really a good person. The latter of these two groups, suggests that there is a very obvious character arc and redeeming storyline that Draco goes through in the latter half of the series. I must admit that I'm somewhat with the second group of fans in my beliefs regarding Malfoy. Sure, he was a pompous pureblood that did terrible things to Harry and his friends in their youth. But these terrible things were always done with juvenile intent. For example, in The Philosopher's Stone, Draco was responsible for tricking Harry into thinking he was going to fight Malfoy in a midnight duel. BUT his true intention in challenging Harry was to have him found outside of bed, running around the castle after hours – something which would have resulted in Harry's expulsion. EXPULSION – not death – not even harm. So, I imagine you take my meaning. Draco seemed to hate Harry but not to the point that he would cause him actual harm – at least as an 11-year-old boy. Of course, later in the series, there are many times in which Draco is presented with the opportunity to bring harm to Harry – such as when he was asked to identify if a very badly stung Harry was indeed THE Harry Potter. This happens at Malfoy Manor in The Deathly Hallows after a group of snatchers find Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the woods and they use a charm to puff up Harry's face beyond the point of recognizability. Of course, the snatchers suspect it's Harry, his lightning-bolt scar mainly to blame. But when Draco, home from school on holiday, is asked to confirm that the puffy-faced, adolescent wizard IS THE Harry Potter, he falters. He knows it's Harry – we know he knows. But he does not confirm it to his father, Lucius, even though it would've brought the Malfoy family back into great favour with the Dark Lord, because Draco knows that if he were to identify Harry as HARRY, he would've been killed. This is one of the MOST telling moments into the true nature of Draco Malfoy. And, so, it's with this perspective that I'll be taking you through today's theories on Mr. Malfoy. We know that in November of 1945, Dumbledore achieved the impossible by defeating the notorious (and Elder Wand wielding) dark wizard at large- Gellert Grindelwald. For decades, Grindelwald had been building his following and spreading his poisonous ideologies, disrupting the Wizarding World in a way unlike any other wizard before. His goal was simple: to establish a new world order where wizards would reign supreme over Muggles. His ideologies, promoted segregation, discrimination, and violence, instilling fear and chaos in thw eyes of many. And for a long time, it looked as though Grindelwald's twisted perspectives were gaining traction.. That is, until Albus Dumbledore stepped in. We also know that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel of 'Legendary Proportions' that is widely perceived to have been the most legendary duel of all Wizarding history. "They say, still, that no Wizarding duel ever matched that between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in 1945. Those who witnessed it have written of the terror and the awe they felt as they watched these two extraordinary wizards do battle. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be diving in to the lives of the fabled trio, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley AFTER the events of the final book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. After the dust settled and the battle with Voldemort came to an end, the Wizarding world celebrated the triumph of good over evil. Voldemort's downfall had a profound impact on the Wizarding world, effectively bringing an end to a dark era characterized by the absence of hope and replacing it with a renewed sense of optimism. However, it also marked the beginning of an uncharted chapter in wizarding world history. And because the books and films ended, we never really got many insights in to HOW the Wizarding World rebuilt itself. And more specific to todays' topic, we weren't given any further information on what the lives of our beloved trio looked like in the aftermath of the war. We were given a brief epilogue that gave us a GLIMPSE in to their lives 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts- but besides that, nothing else. All we get to see are the main characters gathered at Platform 9¾ as they see off their own children to Hogwarts. But this leaves a pretty large gap in time- 19 years to be exact- that's relatively uncharted. Today, I'd like to provide you with some information on what transpired with the trio during these relatively unexplored two decades following the war. Severus Snape became the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor during Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts. And in theory, he was perfect for the position. He had a profound understanding of both sides of the magical spectrum, and knew more about the dark arts than most- making him the perfect candidate to teach students all about it. So..Why didn't he assume the role SOONER? If Snape was so perfect for it- why couldn't he just have the job? Why did he have to wait until Harry was in his sixth year? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing a well-known Hogwarts artefact known as the Mirror of Erised. Specifically, we're going to be getting in to a theory regarding it's dark and otherwise UNKNOWN history. This particular mirror also happens to be the inspiration behind the outro featured on every video I launch on this channel. Harry first discovers the Mirror for himself in the Philosopher's Stone: "It was a magnificent mirror, as high as the ceiling, with an ornate gold frame, standing on two clawed feet. There was an inscription carved around the top: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi. " In case you've forgotten how the mirror works, it's essentially a magical mirror that holds the power to show us the 'deepest, most desperate desires' of our hearts. This is reflected in the mirror's name, no pun intended, as 'Erised' flipped around reads as 'desire'. Engraved on the mirror are the words 'Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi, which, backwards, reads as 'I show not your face but your hearts desire'. According to existing Harry Potter lore all we know is that it existed BEFORE the nineteenth century (pretty open window there) and that no one knows HOW it arrived at Hogwarts. These two aspects of the mirror's existence seem to be entirely undocumented. Moreover, it is entirely ambiguous whether the Mirror of Erised was created with innocent and playful intentions or with more malevolent and darker motives. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing 5 spells from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. But before we get started I want you to brace yourselves to the fact these aren't just any old 5 spells- these are 5 of the most powerful, destructive spells the wizarding world has ever seen- spells so formidable that by contrast even the notorious killing curse (avada kedavra) PALES in comparison. Now, within the wizarding world magic can be leveraged for a wide variety of functions- from help with every day tasks (like cleaning), to picking locks, to teleportation. But perhaps one of the most IMPORTANT uses of magic in a tumultuous wizarding world (that seems to face a new dark wizard every few decades) is the ability to perform martial magic - that is, magic for combat.- Now, in every day context martial magic is not necessary, but it certainly never hurts to be prepared for an invasion of death eaters or dark wizard acolytes, and that's probably why most of these 5 powerful spells were created in the first place. Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to-discuss how Voldemort went about killing Severus Snape. Snape's death is a BIG topic in the Harry Potter story, and when he died it was a truly tragic moment in the series. That is unless of course you don't like Snape. As you progress through the books and films, your perception of Snape is constantly challenged- is he good? Bad? What are his intentions? And in the end, it turned out that Snape was almost more devoted to the cause than anyone.- Snape later dies in the Deathly Hallows, after Voldemort comes to the conclusion that he will need to kill Snape in order to become the true owner of the elder wand. However, we do also find out later on that Snape died in vain, as he was never the true owner of the elder wand after all - and was simply unnecessarily killed by Voldemort. However, what was always interesting about Voldemort killing Snape was that he didn't do it himself-he used Nagini. So we know that Snape ultimately dies at the hands, or mouth (rather) of Nagini on Voldemort's orders. But what I found unusual about Snape's death was the very significant ABSENCE of Avada Kedavra AKA the killing curse. Voldemort is a massive proponent of the killing curse, I mean.. he can't get enough of it, and it's very purpose is to kill. So, why wouldn't he use Avada Kedavra on Snape? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why Lord Voldemort didn't attack the Longbottom family after the prophecy, which inevitably upended the life of Harry Potter. As many of you will know, the trajectory of Harry's life was determined before he was even born. For, just weeks before his birth on July 31 in the year of 1980, a somewhat inadequate soothsayer named Sybill Patricia Trelawney provided the wizarding world with a prediction that would forever change the course of history. She gave an authentic prophecy, that would one day go on to become infamous, while meeting with Professor Albus Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn. After going into a trance-like state during the meeting, which was actually an informal interview for the Hogwarts' Divination teaching position.- Based on Trelawney's appointment of the Divination Professor soon-after, it's believed that she made this prophecy in June of 1980 - mere weeks before the birth of Harry Potter.- After Harry's birth, the reasons for Voldemort targeting the Potter family are rather easy to explain. Most obviously, Harry was born on July 31 - the end of the seventh month. As for the "born to those who have thrice defied him" bit - that's a bit less obvious. But we do know that Lily and James Potter - Harry's parents - were both asked to join the Death Eaters while at Hogwarts and turned down the invitations. They were also part of the original Order of the Phoenix, which means they would have been part of the missions to fight against Voldemort and his followers. As the war against the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters was ongoing, they most certainly had many opportunities to defy Voldemort repeatedly.- So, all of this adds up as to why Voldemort targeted the Potter family and believed Harry to be the wizard described in Trelawney's prophecy. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're taking a look at the entire Harry Potter series and discussing the top ten unsung heroes from The Philosopher's Stone to The Deathly Hallows. In thinking about the novels and films of Harry Potter, it's really not all that difficult to name a few of the bravest characters that grace both the pages and the silver screen. Starting with the title character, of course, Harry Potter - or the Boy Who Lived - is without a doubt the most obvious hero of the franchise. Fans don't have to look very far from there to point out other notable heroes, from Harry's courageous and heroic best mates, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, to the world-famous Professor Albus Dumbledore. And while the headmaster has already well established himself as a hero when Harry arrives at Hogwarts School, the trio of friends also become lauded for their bravery and heroic deeds from their very first year at school. While the recognition of their heroism may go from "sixty points" to Gryffindor "for pure nerve and outstanding courage" in their first year to the gratitude of the entire wizarding world for defeating one of the darkest wizards history has ever know, it's rather inarguable that alongside one of the greatest heroes of all time, Harry, Ron and Hermione are also certainly heroes - all of whom receive the recognition they deserve for their bold and daring feats. But what about all those other characters who helped Dumbledore and the golden trio succeed in those accomplishments? For, as we know, Harry and his friends wouldn't have made it as far as they did in their journey to defeat Voldemort without the help of many allies along the way. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Ghost Plots. You might not be too surprised to hear that Rowling, who wrote the 7 Harry Potter books in a 10 year timespan, generated a fair bit of information (storylines, plots, characters) that simply never made it in to the final versions of the beloved books. And in time, these secondary pieces of information have come to be known as 'Ghost Plots'. "Over the seventeen years that I planned and wrote the seven Harry Potter books, I generated a mass of information about the magical world that never appeared in the books. I liked knowing these things (which was fortunate, given that I couldn't stop my imagination spewing it all out) and often, when I needed a throwaway detail, I had it ready because of the background I had developed. I also found myself developing storylines for secondary (or even tertiary) characters that were superfluous to requirements. More of a wrench were the plots I worked out for some much more important characters that had to be sacrificed for the bigger story. All of these I inwardly termed 'ghost plots', my private expression for all the untold stories that sometimes seemed quite as real to me as the 'final cut'." But what you may be surprised to hear is that a lot of these deleted plotlines and characters have since been exposed by Rowling. It's been 27 years since the first book came out, so I guess it was bound to happen eventually. Anyway, today we're going to be taking a closer look at some of these ghost plots, examining the Harry Potter story in a completely new light. Sometimes, witches and wizards solely rely on the magic they can brew in a cauldron - other times, they ride dragons. But regardless of the differences between each of these fantasy worlds, they all have one thing in common - that is that they all have their own set of rules on how magic exists and operates. In terms of the Harry Potter universe, there are - of course - many rules and stipulations as to how magic works in the wizarding world. But with a universe that has continued to expand over the course of two decades, it's not all that surprising that some of these rules...don't really make much sense at all. "It is Veritaserum - a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear. Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips - right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then, Potter... then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not." Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA 'Truth' Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can't help but notice that it's ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series). In fact, the list of times that it's actually used in the story is exceedingly short. These moments include.. Giving it to Barty Crouch Jr after discovering that he was disguised as DADA Professor Mad Eye Moody Rita Skeeter using it on Bathilda Bagshot while interviewing her for Albus Dumbledore's biography There were of course other times that it was mentioned, like when Dolores Umbridge used a 'fake potion' made by Snape on Harry Potter that he only pretended to drink. But on the whole, it's not even talked about that much, and I feel like it could bring about a whole lot of clarity. ESPECIALLY in the context of convicting criminals. In the Death Eater trials, for example, Igor Karkaroff was pardoned by the Wizengamot after giving up the names of some of his co-conspirators. Why not just feed him Truth Serum? In today's video we'll be discussing WHY Veritaserum isn't more actively used by the Ministry of Magic. Although the first few instalments of Harry Potter were clearly written for a younger audience, it's evident from the very beginning of The Philosopher's Stone that this is not a series afraid to kill off characters. In fact, before we even get 50 pages into that very first novel, we learn - alongside a distraught 11-year-old Harry Potter - that his parents not only died but were MURDERED by one of the most evil and dark wizards of all time. First things first, Dumbledore is unquestionably one of the most powerful and INTELLIGENT wizards to have ever lived. While at school, Dumbledore's magical abilities consistently turned heads, particularly his skills surrounding charms and transfiguration. He also did exceptionally well on his N.E.W.T.S and O.W.L's. Griselda Marchbanks, a professor working for the Wizarding Examinations Authority, remarked that Albus was able to do things with a wand that 'she had never seen before' - remember that. - He was remarkably wise, cunning, tactical and even emotionally intelligent.- But while Dumbledore may very well be all of these things, the series sometimes portrayed him to be practically omniscient. So much so, that it's even remarked upon by other characters: "You are omniscient as ever, Dumbledore." "oh, no, merely friendly with the local barman" And while this may have been a somewhat playful comment on Dumbledore's behalf, I think that there may actually be some pointers in the story that help to explain Dumbledore's seemingly all-knowing perspective.- Dumbledore (throughout the books) just seems to give off an overwhelming 'feeling' that he KNOWS what's going on around him at all times. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Harry Potter book characters who are NOTHING like their movie counterparts. As a general rule, fans of book series know to watch movie adaptations of the novels they love without expecting too much - for it is extremely rare that a filmmaker's vision will match the fictitious world that a fan has created in their own mind. After all, how could you expect every single person to interpret a book the EXACT same way - from the appearance of the characters to how the world looks around them. And even if there was some sort of consensus on how a character was supposed to look, there's also the fact that it's incredibly unlikely for there to be an actor or actress out there who perfectly resembles that character, is the right age, has the correct dialect, AND can act. Of course, this seems even more impossible when applying the concept to an entire cast of characters - like in Harry Potter.- And so, when the first movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series, The Philosopher's Stone, was released in 2001, it goes without saying that fans of the books knew things wouldn't be perfect. BUT it wasn't unreasonable to think that the films would at least TRY to accurately reflect the people and places that fans had read on the pages of the first few books. And in many ways, it did - especially, that first film. Within the wizarding world, anyone referred to as simply a "Slytherin" is a current or former student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who was sorted into Slytherin House upon their arrival at the school.- The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school. Tom Marvolo Riddle was born at Wool's Orphanage on New Years eve, 1926 to Merope Gaunt, a pure-blood witch and the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt.- Tragically, Merope died shortly after Riddle was born, the result of a broken heart. Abandoned by the man that she loved and suffering complications from childbirth paired with starvation and/or hypothermia, Merope no longer had any desire to live, and made no attempts to utilize magic to save her own life. In interviews conducted AFTER the series ended, JK Rowling opens up the possibility of Voldemort LOVING something, someone. She said it herself, if Merope had survived and been there to raise him, then there's a very good chance that he COULD have loved. This means that he was never quite as emotionally incapable as other canon suggests. So my question is..If the transformation of Tom Riddle in to Voldemort could have been avoided by some love and care, then what on earth happened to him at the orphanage? I suppose it's possible that he simply needed the love and care of his mother- but, weren't the caregivers at the orphanage good to Tom? Or, was it actually Tom's upbringing that was directly responsible for creating the monster that tore apart the Wizarding World? The Harry Potter 'prophecy' is a major driving force of the Harry Potter story- foretold by Seer Sybil Trelawney,-the fabled prophecy foresaw the birth of the person who would have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort. And to begin to unpack today's topic further, we need to take a look at the prophecy a little closer.- In 1980 Sybil Trelawney, the now Hogwarts divination professor, was interviewing for her posting at Hogwarts. During her interview, a disappointed and unimpressed Dumbledore began to lose interest, when suddenly Sybill entered a trance. In her trance, Sybill spoke of a boy, that would be born at the end of July, that possessed the power to defeat the dark lord himself.- Had no one heard Sybil's prophecy, then there likely wouldn't have been any need to go in to hiding. But unfortunately for the Potters, Snape (who was then a Death Eater) was eavesdropping at the door, and it didn't take long for him to relay this new information to Voldemort. From Snape's perspective, this was his first mistake, but it was also perhaps the catalyst for unforgivable, opportunistic actions on Snape's part that will (potentially) forever change the way you look at his character. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Horace Slughorn. The....LIAR? For the most part, Slughorn is regarded as charming, jovial and well-liked among students and staff alike. He had a talent for creating positive and welcoming environments. He was also known for his love of the finer things in life, such as good food and luxurious tastes. What's more, Slughorn was an excellent professor- showing plenty of enthusiasm and providing practical examples to help students understand complex potion-making techniques. We later find out that Slughorn had some skeletons in his closet, like giving Tom Riddle information on Horcruxes, but after those memories are extracted he's still not exactly painted as a guilty party. He comes across as a sort of unwilling participant, divulging information on a topic that he couldn't have possibly considered the ramifications of. But here's my hot take...Slughorn's nature was a lot darker than people realize. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. When we're first introduced to Lucius Malfoy, our initial impressions are that he is a wealthy and pompous supporter of Lord Voldemort. He is portrayed as an arrogant, haughty, and elitist man with a strong sense of superiority. He exhibits a disdain for those he perceives as beneath him, particularly Muggle-borns and anyone who opposes his pure-blood ideology. He's also influential and manipulative, using his wealth and power to advance his personal agenda. However, over the course of the series, our impression of Lucius Malfoy changes significantly, and this perceived sense of 'power' that he previously exuded seems to fall off of a cliff. Fast forward just a few books and Lucius Malfoy no longer displays.. any kind of power or influence. Lucius, who was once confident and haughty, is now portrayed as fearful and desperate- a broken man who has completely lost control of his life.
