Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to-discuss how Voldemort went about killing Severus Snape. Snape's death is a BIG topic in the Harry Potter story, and when he died it was a truly tragic moment in the series. That is unless of course you don't like Snape. As you progress through the books and films, your perception of Snape is constantly challenged- is he good? Bad? What are his intentions? And in the end, it turned out that Snape was almost more devoted to the cause than anyone.- Snape later dies in the Deathly Hallows, after Voldemort comes to the conclusion that he will need to kill Snape in order to become the true owner of the elder wand. However, we do also find out later on that Snape died in vain, as he was never the true owner of the elder wand after all - and was simply unnecessarily killed by Voldemort. However, what was always interesting about Voldemort killing Snape was that he didn't do it himself-he used Nagini. So we know that Snape ultimately dies at the hands, or mouth (rather) of Nagini on Voldemort's orders. But what I found unusual about Snape's death was the very significant ABSENCE of Avada Kedavra AKA the killing curse. Voldemort is a massive proponent of the killing curse, I mean.. he can't get enough of it, and it's very purpose is to kill. So, why wouldn't he use Avada Kedavra on Snape? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why Lord Voldemort didn't attack the Longbottom family after the prophecy, which inevitably upended the life of Harry Potter. As many of you will know, the trajectory of Harry's life was determined before he was even born. For, just weeks before his birth on July 31 in the year of 1980, a somewhat inadequate soothsayer named Sybill Patricia Trelawney provided the wizarding world with a prediction that would forever change the course of history. She gave an authentic prophecy, that would one day go on to become infamous, while meeting with Professor Albus Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn. After going into a trance-like state during the meeting, which was actually an informal interview for the Hogwarts' Divination teaching position.- Based on Trelawney's appointment of the Divination Professor soon-after, it's believed that she made this prophecy in June of 1980 - mere weeks before the birth of Harry Potter.- After Harry's birth, the reasons for Voldemort targeting the Potter family are rather easy to explain. Most obviously, Harry was born on July 31 - the end of the seventh month. As for the "born to those who have thrice defied him" bit - that's a bit less obvious. But we do know that Lily and James Potter - Harry's parents - were both asked to join the Death Eaters while at Hogwarts and turned down the invitations. They were also part of the original Order of the Phoenix, which means they would have been part of the missions to fight against Voldemort and his followers. As the war against the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters was ongoing, they most certainly had many opportunities to defy Voldemort repeatedly.- So, all of this adds up as to why Voldemort targeted the Potter family and believed Harry to be the wizard described in Trelawney's prophecy. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're taking a look at the entire Harry Potter series and discussing the top ten unsung heroes from The Philosopher's Stone to The Deathly Hallows. In thinking about the novels and films of Harry Potter, it's really not all that difficult to name a few of the bravest characters that grace both the pages and the silver screen. Starting with the title character, of course, Harry Potter - or the Boy Who Lived - is without a doubt the most obvious hero of the franchise. Fans don't have to look very far from there to point out other notable heroes, from Harry's courageous and heroic best mates, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, to the world-famous Professor Albus Dumbledore. And while the headmaster has already well established himself as a hero when Harry arrives at Hogwarts School, the trio of friends also become lauded for their bravery and heroic deeds from their very first year at school. While the recognition of their heroism may go from "sixty points" to Gryffindor "for pure nerve and outstanding courage" in their first year to the gratitude of the entire wizarding world for defeating one of the darkest wizards history has ever know, it's rather inarguable that alongside one of the greatest heroes of all time, Harry, Ron and Hermione are also certainly heroes - all of whom receive the recognition they deserve for their bold and daring feats. But what about all those other characters who helped Dumbledore and the golden trio succeed in those accomplishments? For, as we know, Harry and his friends wouldn't have made it as far as they did in their journey to defeat Voldemort without the help of many allies along the way. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Ghost Plots. You might not be too surprised to hear that Rowling, who wrote the 7 Harry Potter books in a 10 year timespan, generated a fair bit of information (storylines, plots, characters) that simply never made it in to the final versions of the beloved books. And in time, these secondary pieces of information have come to be known as 'Ghost Plots'. "Over the seventeen years that I planned and wrote the seven Harry Potter books, I generated a mass of information about the magical world that never appeared in the books. I liked knowing these things (which was fortunate, given that I couldn't stop my imagination spewing it all out) and often, when I needed a throwaway detail, I had it ready because of the background I had developed. I also found myself developing storylines for secondary (or even tertiary) characters that were superfluous to requirements. More of a wrench were the plots I worked out for some much more important characters that had to be sacrificed for the bigger story. All of these I inwardly termed 'ghost plots', my private expression for all the untold stories that sometimes seemed quite as real to me as the 'final cut'." But what you may be surprised to hear is that a lot of these deleted plotlines and characters have since been exposed by Rowling. It's been 27 years since the first book came out, so I guess it was bound to happen eventually. Anyway, today we're going to be taking a closer look at some of these ghost plots, examining the Harry Potter story in a completely new light. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing a few noteworthy instances in which wizarding world magic makes absolutely NO SENSE. As many fans of fantasy fiction will tell you, magic tends to have different rules depending on which universe you're referencing. For example, in some fantasy realms, wizards are called warlocks and witches are called mages. In these universes, those who have magical abilities may or may not require wands. Sometimes, witches and wizards solely rely on the magic they can brew in a cauldron - other times, they ride dragons. But regardless of the differences between each of these fantasy worlds, they all have one thing in common - that is that they all have their own set of rules on how magic exists and operates. In terms of the Harry Potter universe, there are - of course - many rules and stipulations as to how magic works in the wizarding world. But with a universe that has continued to expand over the course of two decades, it's not all that surprising that some of these rules...don't really make much sense at all. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing Veritaserum- an incredibly powerful (and I feel, underutilized) potion that forces individuals to reveal the truth. "It is Veritaserum - a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear. Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips - right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then, Potter... then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not." Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA 'Truth' Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can't help but notice that it's ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series). In fact, the list of times that it's actually used in the story is exceedingly short. These moments include.. Giving it to Barty Crouch Jr after discovering that he was disguised as DADA Professor Mad Eye Moody Rita Skeeter using it on Bathilda Bagshot while interviewing her for Albus Dumbledore's biography There were of course other times that it was mentioned, like when Dolores Umbridge used a 'fake potion' made by Snape on Harry Potter that he only pretended to drink. But on the whole, it's not even talked about that much, and I feel like it could bring about a whole lot of clarity. ESPECIALLY in the context of convicting criminals. In the Death Eater trials, for example, Igor Karkaroff was pardoned by the Wizengamot after giving up the names of some of his co-conspirators. Why not just feed him Truth Serum? In today's video we'll be discussing WHY Veritaserum isn't more actively used by the Ministry of Magic. We'll also be discussing use-cases from the story in which Veritaserum could have proven to be extremely useful, potentially saving lives in the process. Let's dive in. Although the first few instalments of Harry Potter were clearly written for a younger audience, it's evident from the very beginning of The Philosopher's Stone that this is not a series afraid to kill off characters. In fact, before we even get 50 pages into that very first novel, we learn - alongside a distraught 11-year-old Harry Potter - that his parents not only died but were MURDERED by one of the most evil and dark wizards of all time. And so, while many of us were indeed taken by surprise when some of our favourite characters were later killed off in the books/films that followed, it really should've been somewhat obvious that we were in for a dark and treacherous ride.- Which brings us to today's topic - all those deaths. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing ALBUS DUMBLEDORE and a theory about how he always seemed to maintain some level of control. First things first, Dumbledore is unquestionably one of the most powerful and INTELLIGENT wizards to have ever lived. While at school, Dumbledore's magical abilities consistently turned heads, particularly his skills surrounding charms and transfiguration. He also did exceptionally well on his N.E.W.T.S and O.W.L's. Griselda Marchbanks, a professor working for the Wizarding Examinations Authority, remarked that Albus was able to do things with a wand that 'she had never seen before' - remember that. - He was remarkably wise, cunning, tactical and even emotionally intelligent.- But while Dumbledore may very well be all of these things, the series sometimes portrayed him to be practically omniscient. So much so, that it's even remarked upon by other characters: "You are omniscient as ever, Dumbledore." "oh, no, merely friendly with the local barman" And while this may have been a somewhat playful comment on Dumbledore's behalf, I think that there may actually be some pointers in the story that help to explain Dumbledore's seemingly all-knowing perspective.- Dumbledore (throughout the books) just seems to give off an overwhelming 'feeling' that he KNOWS what's going on around him at all times. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Harry Potter book characters who are NOTHING like their movie counterparts. As a general rule, fans of book series know to watch movie adaptations of the novels they love without expecting too much - for it is extremely rare that a filmmaker's vision will match the fictitious world that a fan has created in their own mind. After all, how could you expect every single person to interpret a book the EXACT same way - from the appearance of the characters to how the world looks around them. And even if there was some sort of consensus on how a character was supposed to look, there's also the fact that it's incredibly unlikely for there to be an actor or actress out there who perfectly resembles that character, is the right age, has the correct dialect, AND can act. Of course, this seems even more impossible when applying the concept to an entire cast of characters - like in Harry Potter.- And so, when the first movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series, The Philosopher's Stone, was released in 2001, it goes without saying that fans of the books knew things wouldn't be perfect. BUT it wasn't unreasonable to think that the films would at least TRY to accurately reflect the people and places that fans had read on the pages of the first few books. And in many ways, it did - especially, that first film. However, as more and more movies were made, there were some pretty glaring differences between the books and the films - in particular, with some of the main characters of the series.- And so, here are five book characters that I think are NOTHING like their movie counterparts... Within the wizarding world, anyone referred to as simply a "Slytherin" is a current or former student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who was sorted into Slytherin House upon their arrival at the school.- The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school. Tom Marvolo Riddle was born at Wool's Orphanage on New Years eve, 1926 to Merope Gaunt, a pure-blood witch and the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt.- Tragically, Merope died shortly after Riddle was born, the result of a broken heart. Abandoned by the man that she loved and suffering complications from childbirth paired with starvation and/or hypothermia, Merope no longer had any desire to live, and made no attempts to utilize magic to save her own life. In interviews conducted AFTER the series ended, JK Rowling opens up the possibility of Voldemort LOVING something, someone. She said it herself, if Merope had survived and been there to raise him, then there's a very good chance that he COULD have loved. This means that he was never quite as emotionally incapable as other canon suggests. So my question is..If the transformation of Tom Riddle in to Voldemort could have been avoided by some love and care, then what on earth happened to him at the orphanage? I suppose it's possible that he simply needed the love and care of his mother- but, weren't the caregivers at the orphanage good to Tom? Or, was it actually Tom's upbringing that was directly responsible for creating the monster that tore apart the Wizarding World? The Harry Potter 'prophecy' is a major driving force of the Harry Potter story- foretold by Seer Sybil Trelawney,-the fabled prophecy foresaw the birth of the person who would have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort. And to begin to unpack today's topic further, we need to take a look at the prophecy a little closer.- In 1980 Sybil Trelawney, the now Hogwarts divination professor, was interviewing for her posting at Hogwarts. During her interview, a disappointed and unimpressed Dumbledore began to lose interest, when suddenly Sybill entered a trance. In her trance, Sybill spoke of a boy, that would be born at the end of July, that possessed the power to defeat the dark lord himself.- Had no one heard Sybil's prophecy, then there likely wouldn't have been any need to go in to hiding. But unfortunately for the Potters, Snape (who was then a Death Eater) was eavesdropping at the door, and it didn't take long for him to relay this new information to Voldemort. From Snape's perspective, this was his first mistake, but it was also perhaps the catalyst for unforgivable, opportunistic actions on Snape's part that will (potentially) forever change the way you look at his character. He is portrayed as an arrogant, haughty, and elitist man with a strong sense of superiority. Since the original release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997, theories based on the wizarding world of Harry Potter have abounded. There are theories out there that Professor Severus Snape was a vampire and that Hermione and Harry were actually siblings. Some of these theories are more popular and widespread than others - such as the idea that Neville Longbottom was actually the Chosen One Professor Trelawney spoke of in her prophecy about the downfall of Lord Voldemort. There are also outlandish speculations that barely deserve any discussion. Today, however, I'll be taking you through a fan theory that has gained some massive traction online - the idea that Rubeus Hagrid was in fact a Death Eater. The majority of this theory has been presented by a Reddit user by the name of Whoofph, who shared his theory on the sub-Reddit "FanTheories". Upon first learning of this theory, I must admit - I was skeptical. How could the blundering, yet lovable half-giant, who rescued Harry from the Dursleys, secretly be a dark wizard in DIRECT conflict with those he was supposed to be allied with? But after reading it, I must admit, the theory is compelling and filled with some incredibly plausible evidence. It is worth noting, however, that the author of the theory has conceded that much of "the evidence" against Hagrid can likely be chalked up to plot holes, especially earlier on in the series - but it's still fascinating to see how it all fits so well together to support the idea that Hagrid could have actually been a double agent, and follower of Lord Voldemort. As another fan pointed out, the idea that this could be true also provides a really interesting balance to Severus Snape being a double agent for Dumbledore. In any case, let's take a look at some of the most valid points - at least in my opinion - that support the idea that Hagrid was a Death Eater from this popular fan theory... More specifically- we're going to be discussing a popular fan theory which suggests that Dumbledore was never the TRUE owner of the elder wand.- The Elder wand was the first hallow created, made by Death himself, and it was said to be the most powerful wand that ever existed. The Elder Wand is made of elder wood, and it's core is the tail hair of a Thestral. It's 15" long and has carvings down its length that resemble clusters of elderberries. With the elder wand, witches and wizards have historically been able to produce intensely powerful magic that others could only dream of. Some magic is actually altogether impossible without the Elder Wand- including things like mending other wands. We see this powerful artefact pass hands on numerous occasions throughout the Harry Potter story- and its 'ownership' is of utmost importance to the plot. After all, it's the ownership of the Elder Wand that eventually allows Harry to defeat Voldemort- firing his own killing curse right back at him. But before Harry became it's owner in his final showdown with Voldemort at the end of the Deathly Hallows- who were the true owners? Conventionally it is believed that Dumbledore was the owner, followed by Draco who disarmed Dumbledore, followed by Harry who disarmed Draco. But one popular fan theory suggests that Dumbledore was never the true owner at all. So where does that leave us? The main driver behind the theory is HOW the wand actually changes ownership. Conventionally it is believed that a witch or wizard can only become the true master of the wand if they 'best' the previous owner. But what does 'best' mean? While it was originally suggested that 'besting' a wizard meant defeating them, the Harry Potter story seemed to suggest later on that 'besting' can include an act as simple as disarming- i.e Draco with Dumbledore. Specifically, we're going to be taking a look at the events of the time period surrounding the Potter's murder, and why on earth Dumbledore chose to 'borrow' an item of such great protection when the Potter family's lives were in imminent danger. If the cloak is so powerful that even death can't find you, wouldn't it be more useful in the hands of people who are hiding from the most powerful dark wizard to have ever lived? Let's dive in. The Invisibility Cloak is a powerful magical artefact that once belonged to Ignotus Peverell- the youngest brother from the 'tale of three brothers'- a story outlining the origin of each Deathly Hallow.- The plot surrounds the three wizard brothers and their ability to cheat death for a short period of time. After conquering death, a personification of death, under the guise of congratulating them, awards them with 3 gifts: The elder wand, the resurrection stone, and the invisibility cloak. Long story short, each brother chose one of the gifts that death had presented them.-Ignotus (the youngest) chose the invisibility cloak. All 3 of these objects are massively instrumental in the Harry Potter story- and while the elder wand is a huge plot driver, the invisibility cloak definitely ended up being the most useful hallow for Harry- which is interesting, because it was indirectly handed down to him by his father. After James's death, it was kept safe until Harry was old enough to appreciate it, at which point Dumbledore anonymously gifted the cloak to Harry in the Philosopher's Stone.
