Ep 5Nicole's Journey To Becoming a CHT | Testimonial
Nicole's Journey To Becoming a CHT | Testimonial[00:00:43] Hey, how are you? I am, I'm finally coming out of my haze. It was awesome. Right? [00:01:00] I mean like, so I just want to start with saying, congratulations. Um, you have worked so hard and I really am just so happy for you. Um, tell me what you're thinking about when you open your email, you opened the email, didn't you, did you open the email?[00:01:21] Well, so yeah, what happened then was the email came in and I, um, well I found out from someone else at the results came in and I had been thinking. How am I going to open this thing until I get home? Cause I was just too afraid to do what at work. And I only had one coworker who knew I was taking the test again.[00:01:47] And so I I'm went man. And she's like, what's the matter? And I'm like, results are in. She's like what's going on? I said, oh. So, what are you going to do? And I'm like, I think I'm going to wait till I get home. She says, rip that [00:02:00] bandaid off. So as I'm trying to go through it, you know, my hands are shaking.[00:02:06] And the first thing I saw was the word, congratulations. I threw her my phone and I said, you have to read it. I can't do this anymore. And she started screaming saying, you pass your pants your best. And so. We were in an open gym. So where OTs are in the corner and PTs are on the other side of the gym and they start hearing a screaming and they're coming, running over that we dropped somebody.[00:02:29] Right. And, um, and, uh, yeah. And from then on, it's been a major hate. Uh, it was like, and then like, they were like, they got scared. Cause was it the center of the ER she's hyperventilating? I just, I just, I started crying and laughing. I didn't know what else to think. I just, it was like very surreal I had.[00:02:54] And then when I came home, I kept having to read it to make sure it was correct. You know, you get a [00:03:00] little, get a little less. Little gun shy when you, you know, when you try and you get that, we're sorry. You know, and it's like, sure, doesn't say, sorry. And I remember that's the one thing that, um, I remember when we spoke about it this last time you were like, I'm so scared of that email.[00:03:25] Like you almost have, like, you've been traumatized by this stupid email. Pretty much. Yeah. So my coworkers are calling it PTSD. They're like, you've got PTSD from emails. I said, yeah, pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. Just from that one email, just from that, just from that one email. Right. So, um, now that you're kind of coming out of this haze, um, like how, how outside of like being really, I guess, happy, like.[00:03:59] [00:04:00] How did you feel, did you think it was what you expected it to be like? Well, it was kind of funny because, so the information came in on Tuesday. I, I came home and I was talking to a friend of mine who, like, I went stealth with a lot of people. Like there was only very minimal people. So everyone who knew in the past that I taken it, they thought I had given up and wasn't going back in.[00:04:33] Cause I said, the last time I said, that's it I'm done. I can't do this anymore. I'm shot. And so when I made the decision to go back. Not telling me I'm a telling people. Like, I always told a core numb, like only like not even a handful. Okay. All right. So, because those are the people I needed to be my support.[00:04:53] So, um, I, so I was driving home and I was talking to [00:05:00] one of my friends who did not know. So she's freaking out on the phone, happy for me. And she texts me later. The next day. She's like, you must be on cloud nine, stay on that cloud. And the first thing I went is I am not on that cloud because when I came home from work, I just, I, this is what I call it.[00:05:18] I just felt like a wrung out. All the emotions had just come crashing through. Yeah. And then yesterday, when I went back to work, I was more like a zombie and every single, I mean, more people are more happier than I was yesterday because I was just so wiped out today is when I started to feel the joy of passing the exam.[00:05:42] Okay, good. That's amazing. Yeah, because you're like, I feel like. It sounds like you were just holding your breath this whole time. I did it. I, yeah, I was because, and I didn't realize I was doing that and it was, I didn't [00:06:00] realize it. And then it's like, I came home and I went, okay, now what do I do? You know?[00:06:06] So it took me a couple of days to really kind of chew on it. And it's like, now I'm like, yeah, I'm good. Now. Like how. I'm incredibly proud are you of the hard decision that you had to make this last time? And so we're going to kind of just keep walking backwards this last time. Like how hard was that decision for you?[00:06:33] Because let's, let's just tell people because, and you don't have to go into numbers if you don't want to, but you've taken this. Test numerous times. And we you've been with me for two years. Yeah. You've been wi
Ep 4My Biggest Carpal Tunnel Pet Peeve!
Carpal Tunnel Pet Peeve[00:00:43] Hey its Hoang here. I am going to talk about carpal tunnel, right? I want to talk about carpal tunnel. I don't know why this is a pet peeve of mine, but I want to talk to you about carpal tunnel because man, every time I see it in the group, it drives me crazy. So I [00:01:00] see these posts all over the place and. So we deal with this kind of issue when patients call us about carpal tunnel.[00:01:08] So as, as occupational therapists, as hand therapists, we have a tendency to think like, oh, carpal tunnel, uh, you know, brace, uh, or surgery. So why. Why is it that when it comes to carpal tunnel syndrome, it's either brace or surgery, right? Y Y Y is, you know, um, oh, I think I have carpal tunnel. Oh, put a brace on, do tendon glides and there is a more to carpal tunnel than wearing a brace and getting surgery.[00:01:46] I swear to God more. I've been a hand therapist. The more I've been working with the carpal tunnel, there is so much more to carpal tunnel than wearing a brace. As occupational therapists. As a [00:02:00] hand therapist, we have more. Ability than just saying put on a brace. Right. So I see in this group, um, Hey, I have, you know, seen in like mom groups all over the place and in other therapy groups all over the place, it's like, oh, I have so and so who, who has numbness and tingling in their fingers?[00:02:23] And every day they wake up and they have numbness and T. It's carpal tunnel. So, um, what, what should I do about it? Right. Oh, everyone's like put on a brace, wear the brace, take drugs, do tendon glides. There's so much more as therapists. We have the ability to evaluate. And evaluating is asking very specific questions, you know, what's going on because they're with carpal tunnel, just like everything else.[00:02:50] There's a rule in and a rule out. Okay. So let's rule out other problems and this rule in carpal tunnel. So. What I would like to see [00:03:00] more of it's just like, Hey, you know, if you think you have a couple of tunnel, why don't you reach out to an experienced occupational therapist or a S uh, a hand therapist in your community, blah blah, a certified hand therapist in your community that really can help you get to the bottom of what's going on.[00:03:16] Bracing is actually really good and it can be used for a short period of time. This is a. Temporary thing. Right. And then too, you know, as OTs, as occupational therapists, we have new skills, a yes. Tell you that there's something specific about the brace, because it's not just putting on any old breeze.[00:03:39] It's about getting the right kind of brace and wearing it the right way. Right wearing the right way. The schedule is very important at night only. Do you know how many people come into my clinic and tell me, they've been told to where it breaks and they wear that fucking brace all the goddamn time and they have other problems, then Joe's carpal tunnel.[00:03:58] So there's a little [00:04:00] bit more to it. And what we need to do is we need to dive in a little, extra dive into a little extra so that we can talk more about just bracing. Okay. How we add. As occupational therapist is really huge. You want to get, do you want a job? This is how we get a job. This is how we keep our job is by helping people very specifically, not just being like a Google.[00:04:24] Right? So people are looking on Google and they're like, oh, brace, oh, injection. Oh, pills. Yes. I know. But as occupational therapists, we can help them so much more than just modifications. Right. I don't know about you, but if. Twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties and seventies. I don't want to modify for my whole fucking life to just be racist.[00:04:46] I'm sorry. I'm cursing a little bit because I'm very passionate about this, but there's more than that, but you want a rule in, you want a rule in and, um, ah, rolling. And rule [00:05:00] out other problems. There's a lot of times people come with carpal tunnel issues and it's coming from neck shoulder coming all the way down their arm and into the wrist and into their hands.[00:05:09] Right. So there's a hand intrinsic tightness issue or is it shoulder and neck problem? Right. And is it just carp? Is it just the media. Or could we have potentially some owner nerve types of issues or radio narc types issues that like they're all over the place with. Right? So we got a rule in and rule out and sometimes you got to rule out and rule out tendonitis types of issues.[00:05:32] Right? So there's so much more to it than just telling someone to wear a brace. Now, surgery is very important, has a place in hand therapy, but I don't know about. But I don't rush to surgery if I don't have to. Now, obviously you're working with someone and they have atrophy, you know? Um, yeah. Yeah. And it's some surgery, right.[00:05:56] Because once you start having atrophy, um, there's a problem. [00:06:00] So, I mean, Sometimes you have to see, like, is

If you're not a patient therapist, I don't care if you are a new grad or you're a therapist that has several years of experience under your belt, but you want to get into hand therapy and you're trying to land some initial. Well, then [00:01:00] listen up. I've got a tip. It is one of the most important tips that I can give you that is going to help you nail that interview.[00:01:08] My name is Hoang with hand therapy secrets, and I can tell you right now, I see this. All the time. So whether you're a brand new grad, you know, getting out and your life, trying to line up those interviews and you're like, I need to get this job. And I want to get into hand therapy or you're, uh, an occupational therapist has been out for a couple years, but maybe you're in a different setting and you're looking for different opportunities in your career.[00:01:37] I hear this all the time. So I want to share with you my, um, my own findings. Okay. This is my experiences is my, um, my tip, right? Because. You know, as an owner of a therapy clinic, I have an opportunity to interview tons and tons of people. And this is the one thing [00:02:00] that I always hear, and I want to share it with you.[00:02:01] So this is my thing. Do you have an interview coming up and you're, you know, you're feeling kind of nervous and you're like, I really want this job. This sounds great. Like I really want it. Um, the one thing that I could share with you, one thing, one thing only on this video today is please stop doing this one thing.[00:02:20] It is. The person that you're interviewing that you don't know how to do something. Boom. I swear. I swear. I get people who come into my clinic all the time. And one of the first things that come out of their mouth, I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to do that. I'm a new grad stop telling people that you're a new grad.[00:02:44] I could tell about your resume. I could tell, stop telling me that you don't know how to do something. Um, I promise that that is not the most important thing. If you're a new grad and you want to get into hand [00:03:00] therapy position, people who are hiring love new grads, because you're, open-minded. Right. You, um, they have an opportunity to work with you and help develop your skills and that kind of stuff.[00:03:12] Stop telling them that you're a new grad and that you don't know how to do stuff. Right. Big, big, huge thing. I see it all the time. I hear it all the time. Stop telling people that you're a new grad and that you don't know what you're doing. You do know something. So Lee was something that you do know how to do and what you're willing to do, because that sometimes can plan you that job, because you're just so open.[00:03:34] Right? And if you are a therapist that has several years of experience under your belt, it doesn't matter, you know, stop telling the person that's interviewing you, that you don't know how to do something. The most important thing that you could tell somebody is that you have, what's the experience that you have, they could bring to that place.[00:03:56] Right? One of the things is your experience, certain [00:04:00] amount of maturity, right? Hopefully you have some maturity, you're a responsible person. There's some really key things are so great about you. Um, you know how to work with people. You're not a word with complicated people, you know how to work with difficult people.[00:04:13] There's always something you have, uh, X, Y. XE experience. A lot of times people come and they just start telling me, I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to do that. It's like, don't, don't do that. I'm like, please don't tell me, I'm not going to know. Right. Well, I have this keen ability to kinda like know certain things, even before you say it, but, um, I don't know how I do it, but I want to know what you can bring to the table.[00:04:45] I want to know what you're looking for. I mean, in terms of like, when you're looking for a job, To match like for you want and what the company has to offer. And if you guys are the right fit and all that good stuff, then you know, you want to put your [00:05:00] best foot
