83: Question Everything. Let's start with Gender - Noam Kostucki

Meet Noam Kostuki – a life artist and business coach with a diverse professional portfolio, the author of “You Are Your Brand” and “Seek to Keep: How to Find the Best Mentors and Keep Them,” and also the pioneer of a jungle culinary adventure called HiR Fine Dining in Costa Rica.Having delivered two TED talks, delivered programs at Harvard and Yale, and spoken at over 80 international conferences, mostly on subjects related to “making money from doing good” and “creating masterpieces,” Noam is now an experienced teacher, consultor, coach and guide for business owners, entrepreneurs, creators, and investors.NoamHiR Dining (http://hiradventure.com/)Instagram ("https://www.instagram.com/noamkostucki/) Connect on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/noamkos/)Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/noamkos)Twitter (https://twitter.com/noamkos)ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. My background is in Biology and Psychology with a passion for improving the world and human behaviour. We all want things that don’t make much sense when viewed from a broader perspective. The only way to create something magical is to start with something impossible. *Noam shares his radical and influential views about environmental change and other issues that need people’s attention or interest – how their points of view can be manipulated to make them directly link carbon emissions or other harmful substances to the damage they cause and try to be less negligent about such things. Do I need to be constantly producing and always getting better every single second of my hour? Probably no. I could be hanging out and just having a nice time with the people here on the course and observing. Our guest discusses how school teaches us the black and white reality, but it does not teach us how to deal with it. Whether we should maximize our time and stay productive and busy all the time or we should do nothing at all for at least some fixed time periods. Why, sometimes, finishing things that we start or sticking to them is not as important as we think it is? How gender roles are not fixed and how different errors can also make a business unique and successful. *I think that the state of gender is definitely changing a lot. I think that the world is going through a new openness. I think that we’re going through a crisis of masculinity and I think we’re going to see a lot of changes around that. I think that the gender question is definitely going to be a big topic. *Noam has an open, innovative, radical, and revolutionary approach to the topics of gender identity, diversity, roles, expression, sexuality, and much more. He believes that the focus is soon going to shift from the stronger or more masculine side of women to the softer or more feminine side of men.*I love the feeling that as much as the last hundred years have been about empowering women and about elevating women. I’ve got a feeling that this next phase now and the next five years might be the beginning of reconnecting men with both masculinity and femininity. I can see the response to what I’m doing is so surprising. I mean, for metrosexual men and women in Costa Rica, in the US and the Philippines, young and old, it’s really amazing to see how people are responding. *Noam discusses how being on a privileged side of the society in any way makes you unable to complain or be unhappy about anything – especially as a kid – when you keep getting told that there are people who are in a much worse condition. As a young guy, when you are frustrated, you are not allowed to cry because that is sissy, but you are not allowed to shout either. That creates bottled up emotions.A moment that something becomes a routine. It’s time for me to change.Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. 59: Mental Health without the BS - Petra Velzeboer - Psychotherapist and Executive Coach

Petra Velzeboer is a mental health consultant, executive coach and podcaster. She has a radical 'no BS' approach to mental health and isn't afraid to come out with some hard hitting facts of life. She has a challenging personal story from being raised in a cult which she broke out of to then fall into alcohol abuse and motherhood. Her tale of turning herself around to get her qualifications and become a shining beacon of inspiration and advice to others is amazing. She is a true advocate of the Growth Mindset and an absolute legend. On the show we go through her dark history and the amazing challenges she overcame. But it is not a perfect wonder story and we both reflect on our own current challenges instead of pretending we have arrived at this Nirvana of knowing everything and being happy which too many people pretend. This is a hard hitting episode with lots of insights and tips for really being true to yourself, taking accountability and becoming the person you should be. 57: Doing the Difficult Thing - Dr Niall McCann - Intrepid Explorer and Director of National Park Rescue

Dr Niall McCann doesn't mess around. He's cycled the Himalayas, rowed across the Atlantic and skied across Greenland. He knows a thing or two about taking on difficult challenges and winning. His incredible mindset to take on huge challenges doesn't just stop with adventuring but also taking on the worlds biggest problems. As a Biologist and conservationist he was challenged by the lack of impact science was having on the decline of species and the climate. Instead of getting depressed he took on the problems head on and runs National Park Rescue to solve these problems. They take the biggest issues to the most important people they can and get buy-in at a top level to protect nature by law. They also take a bottom up approach and skill local people to look after wildlife and provide them jobs as park rangers and tour guides so they can preserve their assets and make money out of them from tourism instead of hunting. Because of his work there are huge ares of land that are protected and provide sanctuary to species that would be going extinct otherwise. He is also a member of the Mountain Rescue Team in the Brecon Beacons and if you hadn't got the picture he is a bit of a hero on every level. Topics It was an inspiring conversation with Niall about the work he does. We discuss so many things: How to become an 'explorer' The challenges rowing across the Atlantic How illegal poaching relates to arms dealing, drug trade and human trafficking and the importance of stopping it How to get buy in from politicians How to create a sustainable economy that solves these problems How to get on TV Why climate change wasn't broadcast publicly for so long The future of conservation and the climate General amazing life advice Links National Park Rescue Wallacea Trust Dr Niall McCann Website Growth Mindset Website and Show Notes ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. It is really hard to build a brand. To make a campaign that people actually engage with you have to push the boat out and really make people think about what you are telling them and make it something memorable.HAVE A PURPOSEThings get pretty depressing pretty quickly when you don’t have a purpose. It’s really interesting to see what happens in life when you have basically arrived at all the metrics of success one needs to achieve in one life. What the hell do you then go and do?BE NICELooking after those around you and giving back to people that helped you or people that can learn from you is really important and a crucial way to not get too caught up in all your own problems and be grateful for what you do have.BONUS - BRAND TRUMPS DATAMany marketers obsessively focus on all important metrics to drive success. Of course, success is defined by the metrics you track. However, this can lead to marketing teams ignoring their brand, as it is a hard intangible metric to measure.Mat makes the point that when you make brand your top metric to work towards then all your other metrics will go up anyway. So you should never ignore your brand!BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)EATING THE BIG FISH BY ADAM MORGAN (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eating-Big-Fish-Challenger-Compete/dp/B008TT17OM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=eat+big+fish&qid=1580912250&s=books&sr=1-1)This is all about taking a smaller brand and challenging the big brands in the market and beating them, which is exactly what Just Eat did and thus a perfect book for further reading.SAPIENS BY YUVAL NOAH HARARI (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapiens/dp/B00VXKB596/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=sapiens&qid=1580912228&s=books&sr=1-1)A masterpiece on the evolution and history of the entire human species up to today and why the world is how it is and a beautiful insight into human minds.Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. But you need to do it right:Have a tangible story - you need to have a cool story that ideally has some concrete metrics behind it that can people can understand and this will help a journalist tell a story Choose your one thing - To get press journalists want to have a succint 50 word summary. make it easy for them and focus on one thing that you are an expert at that you want to be known for. If you try and do multiple things at once you just end up in a mess that doesn’t go anywhere. This is a wider lesson for life as well as your PR Everything gets easierA number of times Rafael was challenged but he embraced the difficulties and fears and they all become much easier over time. He was challenged starting his first business, and every business after that. He was challenged by writing a book. He was challenged by living in the UK. Every time you're speaking that is a time when your guest isn’t. Your podcasts or any form of interviews get much better when you stop trying to control the interview and make it about you and just focus on the person you’re talking to. PLAN OUT YOUR IDEAWith solid preparation, Dan managed to get 10,000 users in one night. That is insane. Compared to so many ideas I’ve seen with people spending years to get a thousand users. Caught up in running around doing all these different things and not using focussed effort on the most important areas to get the most leverage. This is definitely a great example of the 80/20 rule and focusing on what matters.FOCUS ON A NICHEDan’s podcast is highly focused on just Great Business Leaders with a crazy amount of experience. He releases 16 episodes a year and in 2 years already had over a million listens, and I'm sure this year it’s going stratospheric. When you focus on just a quality niche it’s much easier to grow what you do and can take a lot less effort. It a sad truth that I am just too interested in too many things to nail myself down to one concept for the podcast and love being available to talk to any fascinating human. But, I’m definitely changing tactics to become a seasonal podcast where I go deep on one niche at a time and really make high-quality content for one field at a time.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)I know for a fact some of Dan’s favourite books are ‘Lost Connections (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Connections-Uncovering-Depression-Unexpected/dp/B078HH4HF4/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2HXFZGH4Z37MX&keywords=lost+connections+johann+hari&qid=1580906136&s=books&sprefix=lost+co%2Caudible%2C384&sr=1-1)’ by Johann Hari and ‘12 Rules for Life (https://www.amazon.co.uk/12-Rules-Life-Antidote-Chaos/dp/B078YBSPYZ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1ZU7IUT7INDR7&keywords=12+rules+for+life&qid=1580906168&s=books&sprefix=12+rules%2Caudible%2C447&sr=1-1)’ by Jordan Peterson.Another favourite is ‘How To Change Your Mind (https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-to-Change-Your-Mind/dp/B07CT42TNF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=12AGK0N435PJ2&keywords=how+to+change+your+mind&qid=1580906206&s=books&sprefix=how+to+chang%2Ca

Both Nav and I suffer from this and when you learn to say no and be protective of your time to truly deliver at a top level on just a few focused projects things get a whole lot betterONLY DO IT IF YOU LOVE ITTo succeed in the arts you have to just love the art that you are doing, whether it is writing, painting or music. it shouldn’t be about fame or other things because that won’t come instantly and you won’t enjoy yourself. you will constantly be questioned and challenged by what you're doing and if you don’t love it you will give up. I really liked his example that a banker doesn’t have to get tested to see if he can be a banker every week, but as an artist, you are constantly auditioning to even be able to do your job. This leads nicely into another important point aboutHAVE THE RIGHT GOALS AND METRICS OF SUCCESSWhen the choir were in a big competition and put in loads of work and hours they had an awesome experience and massively grew the profile of the choir, every person involved gained new skills and they made beautiful music. yet because they didn’t win the competition they felt like failures. if you removed the bit where you mention your in a competition and just say that your going to be in TV to millions of people and be awesome that sounds great and hardly something to get depressed about. So before you do anything it is important to remind yourself what is the real value from what you are doing and what you want to get out of it before you chase the wrong goals.BONUS TIP - NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR AN AWARDBeing nominated for a BCA was one of the best things that happened to him and also thoroughly deserving. Similarly, with a previous guest Lisa Forte who was nominated for top 100 women in Tech it's great when someone who really deserves recognition gets it. So I’m pretty sure we all must know someone in our community that deserves more recognition. So just nominate them. Whether it's for a BCA or Top person in Tech or any other award. If someone has been making your day brighter give back and give them a nomination. If they are doing great work already they’ll be able to do twice as much if you give them a little bit of help. When developing gratitude they say you should write more letters to people deserving, but going one step further and getting them a nice award is five times better and I”m sure you will feel fantastic if your favourite local hero gets an award because of you. 49: Stoic Determination and Tenacity, 'Sisu' - Mike Follett, CEO Lumens Research

Mike Follett is the CEO of Lumens Research. They create eye-tracking software to understand human behaviour and intent. Mike is full of fascinating insights on life and business. He has some fantastic stories where he used 'Sisu', a Finnish ideology of grit and bravery, to get himself out of sticky situations. ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. I am a British entrepreneur, investor and explorer. From hitchhiking across Kazakstan to programming AI doctors I am always pushing myself in the spirit of curiosity and Growth. My background is in Biology and Psychology with a passion for improving the world and human behaviour. One of my new favourites.Sometimes we need to show some grit and determination. To be the David against Goliath and do the scary things. Mikes example of taking on a bigger business trying to shut him down is a perfect example of realising when you need to just step up your game.FRAME YOUR STORIES CORRECTLYWe are the result of the stories we tell ourselves and so it’s very important what stories we use to explain what happens in our lives. We covered two very important points around this to ensure that you encourage the best activities from the stories you tell and learn the most you can. - 1 - Try to frame them positively so you can see the best in a situation and not give up. When Mike nearly lost the entire business instead of explaining themselves as incapable idiots who certainly shouldn’t be running a business, they explained it as a big lesson and an example where a plucky young company managed to overcome the big bad guys - 2 - On the flipside. Don’t blind yourself from your problems by telling yourself things too positively and believing your own hype. When Mike was struggling with traction and thought his business idea was the answer to everything it took his marketing director to explain that realistically not everyone in the world will need this or be amazed by it and you need to really know who gets exactly what value from it.DON’T BOX YOURSELF INThis nicely summarises the last two tips. Mike boxed himself into thinking he needed to use a specific piece of equipment from one supplier. This was a stupid story to tell himself and nearly cost the business. It required ‘Sisu’ to overcome this toxic mindset and open the business to other ways of operating. The reason this is a third tip is that before you even start telling yourself stories or need ‘Sisu’ to get out of a sticky situation you can avoid this by not boxing yourself in in the first place and planning out a business that isn’t reliant on a single break point, whether it is one customer or one supplier or one piece of technology it is always really key to not have all your eggs in one basket that you don’t have control of.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)Diffusion of Innovations - Everett M. Such innovations are initially perceived as uncertain and even risky. To overcome this uncertainty, most people seek out others like themselves who have already adopted the new idea. Thus the diffusion process consists of a few individuals who first adopt an innovation, then spread the word among their circle of acquaintances--a process which typically takes months or years. But there are exceptions: use of the Internet in the 1990s, for example, may have spread more rapidly than any other innovation in the history of humankind. The Imitation of Christ - Thomas Akempis (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Imitation-Christ-Penguin-Classics/dp/0141191767/ref=sr_1_1?crid=QA7P9GPB9HAQ&keywords=the+imitation+of+christ&qid=1580826406&sprefix=the+imi%2Caps%2C391&sr=8-1)Only the Bible has been more influential as a source of Christian devotional reading than The Imitation of Christ. 48: Cyber Attack Wargaming - Top 100 Women in Tech Winner Lisa Forte, CEO Red Goat

Lisa Forte deservedly won the top 100 Women in Tech award for 2018 for her work combating cyber-crime. She is an inspirational public speaker and a tenacious entrepreneur. Her business Red Goat Cyber Security helps businesses combat cyber crime. If you want to play at cyber wargaming in the office to prepare for malicious attacks she is the lady to call. Her previous experiences working to combat Somali Pirate attacks on shipping and then for the British government have made her a real expert in the space. Lisa’s attitudes toward life and learning are as infectious as they are brilliant. I can’t recommend her more highly. The idea behind social engineering is to take advantage of a potential victim’s natural tendencies and emotional reactions.*Instead of working on months hacking into a company’s system, social engineering would bypass the process which would make life easier for individuals or criminal organizations. Cyber attacks hit businesses every day and have increased every year as people try to benefit from vulnerable business systems. *Lisa started out taking every role in the company, Red Goat Cyber security, to set as a sample in getting the business off the ground. If she won’t move, no one else will. She mentions that it’s a constant challenge to run your own business, comparing it to taking care of a child that never grows old. It needs constant attention. Lisa also cited her success in public speaking that helped the company gain more clients and, at the same time, elevate herself. If you’re really struggling with something, if there’s a block on something, don’t just necessarily go and look for the obvious solution. Go and look outside the box and try to find someone who might offer you something that blows the barrier that you have.Lisa believes that the Cyber Security industry will grow exponentially since consumer products being developed nowadays are intertwined with the internet. She mentioned that since almost everything would rely on the internet, this would make users more vulnerable to cyber-attacks.Hopefully, individuals will start becoming more aware of how they connect with the internet and become more security conscious in the same way you never go out of the house without locking your door.Lisa brought up that there are 2 types of hackers: black hats and white hats. Some hackers are criminals and use their computer skills to harm or damage computer systems. These people are called black hat hackers. White hat hackers, on the other hand, use their computer skills to perform ethical hacking. Ethical hacking can determine vulnerabilities in a computer system. If companies don't hire white hat hackers to seek out potential threats and find vulnerabilities, there would likely be a lot more cyber crime activity and data breaches. It’s basically stepping up their game to make their life challenging. Our guest talked about the internet becoming a space filled with malicious links, trojans, and viruses. Data breaches are becoming more frequent, and naive users are more vulnerable than ever before. Lisa

It’s better to get halfway to a billion and fail than succeed in getting to one million. When you have massive goals you can really surprise yourself. There are two ways to achieve huge success like this. you can build a business the traditional way. or you can form a movement, depending on what you want to achieve you might not need to become rich first to achieve your dreams. this is a really strong point that completely relates to a different idea I've been putting together to do exactly this which I”m hoping to launch this year. watch this space for details. SUCCESS IS CREATIVITY PLUS PRODUCTIVITY I love this definition of success. It is exactly what I’m striving for, the two things that make me happiest are when I am being creative and when I’m being productive and when you can find something that overlaps both you are in the sweet spot. My idea’s going forwards are really going to be optimised for this. HEALTH This whole attitude on life extension is awesome. the main take homes are to avoid as many carbs as possible but perhaps going full on keto is a bit too much. but try and micro fast which is eating within an 8-hour window each day. so for me, I have lunch at 1 pm maybe snack on some fruit and then dinner. After a while it's incredibly easy. Once you get used to it you can push for longer fasts like 24-hour fasts or I’ve started doing regular 40-hour fasts which is basically one whole day of not eating in the middle of my normal 16-hour fasts as those just feel like normal eating now anyway. I pushed it really hard last week and did a 100 hour fast which was a bit mental and had some interesting results which I’ll do a whole podcast on soon. Let's just say there are too many people advocating extreme fasting without useful medical advice so I deliberately did an unsupported one and documented what went wrong to prove a point. I might do some more sensible ones with some science involved as well in the future but who knows. Make your decisions based on who is genuinely interested, passionate and motivated to achieve the vision you have for the company. They may have a bigger learning curve but the work they do will be ten times better TELL A GOOD STORY By telling a story that really pulled on the heart strings Ben got a crazy level of interest from investors at the Techstars DemoDay. he started with a video from one of his fisherman explaining how his life has been changed thanks to pesky fish. He makes more money more reliably from working with the app and doesn’t need to risk his life going out in dangerous seas to make ends meet. By telling a story that people understood and buy into the concept which massively increased his chances of success. THE WORLD OF FOOD IS CHANGING Chef’s and consumers expect to be able to get hold of better products faster and more transparently. The next five years is going to have a radical shift in the food chain as people become more connected with the sources of their food. Seeing how a company like Pesky Fish operates opened my eyes and once you see how it could be it seems ridiculous to think it could ever go backwards. Doing anything worthwhile will usually entail some pretty difficult or boring moments at some point or quite a lot of points. You’re much more likely to be successful with anything you do, if something that fundamentally interests you.AUTOMATE THE BORING STUFFWhen doing something find parts that really don't interest you and take up your time, these will often be holding you back from reaching your potential. You want to find ways to automate them as much as possible. For a bootstrapped entrepreneur this might not be possible straight away but it should be one of your highest priorities as soon as you have the budget. If you can automate your admin and accounts and stuff that just takes your time and isn’t that interesting you can spend more time doing the interesting thing that delivers value and thus build a better business or get more experience in whatever it is you are trying to do.If it turns out the hard boring thing you want to automate is the critical part of the idea or skill that you are working on then clearly this wasn’t a thing that interests you and you should be doing something else.BE SELECTIVE OF YOUR CO-FOUNDERS OR CO-WORKERSDon’t work with anyone just because they sound like they have the right skills. You need to know that you can deeply trust this person, that you both have the same long term goals and that you have the complementary skills. (and also that they don’t have a shady history)So If you don’t already know someone it might be better to work in a non-binding agreement as a test first to see if you really both have the same goals and interests and that it will work long term. It can really help you avoid a messy breakup or issues of silent co-founders dragging you down and of course, hefty legal fee’s to deal with the problem. Richard is doing himself out of a job here. But as he says he would be much rather be helping you scale your business up anyway.BONUS TIP: THINK ABOUT YOUR RISKSHis business failure lead to some huge lessons. Don’t take too many loans and leave yourself exposed. Don’t have one point of failure just because a market seems so strong doesn’t mean it will be that way tomorrow. Hedge some of your bets and choose a niche that will be resilient to change.BOOKSTHE COMPLETE TURTLE TRADER (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-TurtleTrader-Investors-Overnight-Millionaires/dp/0061241717/ref=sr_1_1?crid=126355F8JUHF4&keywords=the+complete+turtle+trader&qid=1580814205&sprefix=the+complete+turt%2Caps%2C447&sr=8-1)This book sounds awesome. It is the real-life version of the movie Trading Places but with 23 participants in the experiment instead of just Eddie Murphy. DON’T GET DISTRACTED OR LET LIFE GET YOU DOWN. LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT AND KEEP MOVING!Now Agustin said this so many times during the interview I genuinely got a little frustrated and I admit I was trying to perhaps dig other insights out of him. but i was being a complete idiot because this is so bloody hard to do and so so damn important. It sounds like a fairly simple idea but it’s a nightmare to actually implement and I can easily look back at many times where i’ve been weak or unfocused on my goals and let other things get in the way. Agustin is truly a master at just living in the moment and getting the most out of live and living with a purpose he is an incredible example of what a human can do despite everything going against you. His story really puts things in perspective and if you think you have a hard time then you should really pick yourself up. take his advice and move on. TRY IDEAS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATEAgustin was worried he would become a wage slave for life if he didn’t quit his job and start trying ideas. He had numerous failures and just kept trying out different things till he finally had an idea he was able to get traction on. It’s easy to never take the risk or to give up after you fail but again it’s about not giving up and moving on relentlessly. BE MINDFUL OF OTHERSAgustin mentioned he tried to be mindful of others and I can tell you from direct experience he really is. You can’t tell from this released podcast but actually this original recording was over an hour long and boy did i murder this interview. Agustin had such incredible tips but I kept on asking stupid questions or missing the point, not helped by the fact that I was under way too much self inflicted workload stress and generally too busy. Agustin sent me such a kind email a few weeks later:bro. no worries if you need to delay the podcast or don’t publish it. it was nice chatting and no pressure. (rough abbreviation) Sounds little but it really helped me a lot and gave me a huge relief that I was able to finally give this podcast the true attention to make a good job of editing it into an actual piece of audio that makes sense and sounds like it happened in a logical order. Trust me it didn’t happen like that at all. Igor Volzhanin is the CEO of DataSine. A marketing business that helps businesses create personalised marketing based on the personality traits of their customers. It is the kindest thing you can do for yourself and others by just laying yourself bare and being vulnerable and honest.BE CAREFUL WHAT INVESTMENT YOU ACCEPTTheir first offer they had to reject, by holding out they got into Techstars and later the investment from a Russian VC who gave them much more support as they were aligned with the goals of DataSine. This is an easy one to say but to actually do in practice is a lot harder when you haven’t got a bunch of different investors to choose from. It requires some real bravery to reject people if you aren’t sure if you’ll get another offer. But try to ensure your goals and the investors goals are as similar as possible DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERSI don’t think I’ll ever forget the story of the Indian kids being so happy they got a football and could stop kicking rocks around. Whilst at the same time first world children being unhappy with receiving last years iPhone. It is such an accurate statement! It highlights a general flaw in human psychology. Our happiness is a very weird thing that is highly affected to the context of the people around you instead of focussing purely on how lucky you are for the things you have. So don’t compare yourself to others or feel entitled to things that you have no business being entitled to and just chill out a bit and remember to think how much worse things could be. Instead think about how much you can be grateful for. It will do you the world of good TAKE BIG RISKS“The biggest risk in life is doing something you don’t like in the hope you might learn to enjoy it” - Igor VolzhaninI love this quote so much! We risk missing out on so much in life by just doing the things we are presented with and by not taking chances. By letting our fear of the unknown control us we often never find things that truly make us happy and it is so important to take seemingly big risks less we run the biggest risk of all of having never truly lived. 38: The Power of Focus - Nicholas 'Charles Tyrwhitt' Wheeler, OBE

The Founder of Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, Nicholas Wheeler OBE, discusses his various successes and failures from childhood to the present day. We find out how to have good ideas and bad ideas and the key to making them successful. Charles Tyrwhitt is now a ~$0.3 billion company which he started from nothing. The story of zero to 1 million is always interesting. But the further stories of going from 1 to 10 and 10 to 100 provide incredible depth and insights into how to focus and be persistent. InsightsPeople would often do stuff because they were told to do it. Work because you want to do it. Love what you do.Top leaders can provide the framework and tools for a team, but the game is won on the playing field. When a strategy looks brilliant, it’s because of the quality of execution. In starting a business, you have to give the quality your target market would normally want.Fail fast so that you could pivot. You decide what you’re good at and do that. Decide what your core strength is.If you want to do something well, focus on one thing and do it well.Entrepreneurs tend to sell out easily in hopes to make it faster. Enjoy and learn from the Grind. It’s always not about the money. The unhappiest people are those who make a lot of money because you need to be striving for something to which if you suddenly get there, it destroys a lot of people.NICHOLAS AND CHARLES TYRWHITTConnect on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-wheeler-934496/)Charles Tyrwhitt company website (http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/)ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. He started a photography business to commemorate the precious memories and reminders of people dear to someone. He was inclined to the business idea of import-export because he had a feeling that this could be a good way to grow a business.Do stuff because you really want to do it, and not because you’re told to do it.Always wanting to be in control of his destiny and start his own business, Nicholas cites execution as a “big thing.” Start with execution and subsequently define your strategy. You don’t want to be the leader who overpromises only to under-deliver. Prioritizing execution requires you to think of your business strategy a living, evolving entity, meaning you’ll routinely revisit, reanalyze and make updates based on how things are going in real-time.The idea is not the big thing. It’s always about execution. You look around a room and there are a 101 business ideas in any room. You just got to do it better than anybody else. Better quality, better value, better sale.Through traveling, Nicholas was able to start a shoe business. As he garnered clients, Nicholas had to manufacture his products internationally because of the quality he deemed fit for his business. After experiencing business lessons, Nicholas turned to “Charles Tyrwhitt,” a menswear clothing line built to last. He mentioned that when starting a business, the first couple of years should all be about learning your customers, your product and your business. He has given recognition on the times when his business would try to go do more things for growth, to which it has cost them setbacks. Charles Tyrwhitt improved in time especially with the development of the internet. When the internet did come along, I knew it was going to be very important for the business. It changed mail order from the down and dirty to being quite sexy.Nicholas points out that the key to every business’s success is focusing on the things that one is good at. The key to success might be focus, but don’t forget to believe in your dreams. Success is limitless when Focus is the driver and never take your mind off your dreams. You don’t just think it’s going to work, you know it is going to work. When you’re bored, you tend to lose focus. Just be mature on focusing on the one thing and be the best for you to get a business working. Focus is an incredible part of success.Nicholas took the time to invest himself in taking more work than they can handle rather than delegating tasks to his employees. As a humble leader, he appreciates the strengths of each employee and trusts them to do effective work to help move the company forwar

36: Contrepreneurs, Wantrepreneurs and Entrepreneurs - Mike Winnet- UKs #1 Demotivational Speaker

Mike Winnet is the UK's #1 demotivational speaker. He is the antidote to 'Contrepreneurs' that sell instant success formulas to 'Wantrepreneurs' who are never going to make it and are just wasting their money. He believes that most people are average and should not harbour lofty ambitions to achieve their dreams and should be much happier with a simple life. Needless to say, this sparks an interesting debate between Mike and the Growth Mindset host Sam. You have the same number of hours in the day as the world’s most successful people. What you lack is their drive, work ethic, and talent. That’s why they are more successful than you. - Mike WinnetLESSONSDON’T BE A CONTREPRENEUR!I had only thought about how i could try to convince people that they can do more with their lives but really i want to help them live the best life they can. I don’t want to be another contrepreneur selling the message that anyone can be successful with these 5 simple tricks or something and never want to be selling conferences and course that will change your life to people whose lives I can’t change.I really don’t want to push the message at all that things are easy or that you can get the key to happiness or success by just listening to me, you definitely have to take on the growth mindset and acknowledge and work at your weaknesses. recognise your strengths and where you can develop further and optimise your time for learning and executing and not just consuming more knowledge endlessly. anyway its a humbling realisation to be told that I could be selling false dreams to my listeners but it’s great to make sure I focus on really only making content that is really useful and isn’t just click-baity crap.YOU ARE THE CONTENT YOU CONSUMESo important these days. it’s super easy to get caught up with your social media feed and going on a 2 hour youtube binge or watching netflix or love island (well at least that’s what i hear, i could literally never watch love island) but anyway the point is that the internet and technology is a real amplifier and can be dangerous. It gives great access to science and learning but at the same time unlimited content that it useless and depending on what you choose to consume will really affect you. You are the direct result of the information your taking in and if your constantly on social media then your never going to be successful and you are pretty much just making yourself stupider. if you can optimise your time for reading quality content and learning then the world is your oysterYOU CAN’T BUY INSTANT SUCCESSWether someone is selling the key to business success or a zero to hero coding course in three months the facts of life is that you nothing is that easy. Anyone offering something like this is a liar and you are literally wasting your money if you expect to just pay £1000 and have everything sorted out for you. It takes work.To run a business you need to dedicate all the hours to get it off the ground. To become a coder you need to really learn the fundamentals before paying for any bootcamp course or you have no chance of learning much at all whilst you are there. Trust me!BOOKSRICHARD TEMPLAR - THE RULES OF WEALTH (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1292086432/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=4802d-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1292086432&linkId=494d6d46b134a16fbc063b027346bf85)The Rules of Wealth' is a set of behaviours that separate the wealthier from the less wealthy. They are a personal code for a more prosperous life.ARE YOU AVERAGE - MIKE WINNET40 TELL TALE SIGNS THAT YOU ARE AVERAGE.Motivational speakers like Tony Robbins have got ordinary Joe’s like you so pumped up and ready to “crush it", that society is overrun with wannabe entrepreneurs. And that's dangerous. The rise of social media has got everyone believing they can run an online business. But if everyone is focused on their side hustle, who's going to do the real jobs?So this book is to stop any idea you may have of making the world a better place and just getting you to accept this is it. 35: Quit Your Job and Travel to Find Success - Kat Wczesniak

Kat started her first business with no clue about business and just a passion for travel. She grew the brand into a successful travel company Curious Kats Adventure Club and got paid to live her wildest dreams. She sold the business after 5 years and started a marketing agency based on all her lessons. We recount her biggest lessons and stories along with top advice to do things that scare and improve you everyday. > ”Just do stuff, if it scares you that’s even better” - Kat WczesniakLESSONSKat didn’t follow some course or read a book to start her business. she didn’t pay some guru like Gary V to turn her into a millionaire or something, she just did stuff. Point is that if you need someone to tell you what to do then you are probably never going to do it. A real growth mindset attitude that just because you aren’t endowed with the skills doesn’t mean that if you don’t work hard you can’t do it. you don’t need to have an mba in business or studied all the books to be able to go and just do something. 34: Business and Legal Lessons from a Life in Tech - Anthony Rose "The man who saved the BBC"

TOP LESSONS FROM A LIFE LAUNCHING WORLD CHANGING TECHAnthony is known for his work managing the launch of the BBC's iPlayer, for which Wired UK named him "the man who saved the BBC". He has founded/co-founded multiple companies including; Beamly, 6Tribes, Hey Blab, KaZaa and QJAM. He is the current CEO of SeedLegals, the world’s first legal automation platform for startup funding. Rose currently holds 14 patents and has won numerous awards for his contributions to the digital product industry. SEEDLEGALSAfter making his stamp on how we consume audio and TV in the age of the internet, Anthony started Seed Legals to turn legal services into a digital service accessible to anyone. Seedlegals was started to solve his own problems and help save founders time and money to quickly get the solution they need from a team who understand startups and law. In the episode, he recounts some of the best advice possible for any founder considering starting a business and raising money, educating us about the biggest mistakes founders make and the top tips for growing a business successfully. TOP TIPSThis is a grossly short list of the million things I learnt in this podcast…HAVE A FOUNDER AGREEMENTThis is one piece of advice I do have experience in and I tell you what it saved my life. THERE ARE GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES TO RAISE INVESTMENTDon’t try to raise at the same time as launching a product. Finding traction will be slower than any estimate and make it hard to raise money (and will probably just be made slower by trying to raise and not focussing on your business). The best times to make your first raise are before you have a product launched or after you have demonstrated traction. SHOUT ABOUT YOUR BIZMake yourself seem big by trying to appear everywhere, Engage wherever you can in news, meet-ups, on-line groups and anywhere you can get your name out, (try appearing in podcasts!) When small it is really important to appear like you are ‘organised’ and ‘everywhere’ and this can really boost your returns from marketing and client conversations and is also a huge boost in your ability to attract talent that you need to grow your business. 32: How to Make a Successful Podcast (or Other Side Project) - Sam Harris

I have been recording podcasts for nearly two years and running this show for over a year and running side projects for the past 10 years there are loads of thing I've learnt. (There is plenty still to learn and I don't want to pretend I am the ultimate master just yet) I break down some of the most important things to make your side project or hobby a successful endeavour that gives benefits back. In the second half of the episode I dive deeper into specific lessons and surprises I've learnt from running a podcast that I wish I had been aware of when I started. MAKE A SUCCESSFUL PODCAST OR SIDE PROJECTTHE PROBLEM WITH SIDE PROJECTSMany people start idea’s as a side project for it to just fizzle out, be it getting fit, learning an instrument, learning to code or starting a business. It’s really frustrating to end in failure and have wasted a bunch of time and money you’ll never get back going nowhere.I have been recording podcasts for nearly two years and running this show for over a year. I have been running side projects since I can remember with plenty of success and failure and a whole bunch of lessons learnt. There is plenty still to learn and I don't want to pretend I am the ultimate master at any of them or at learning. However, there are some common themes I’ve noticed with my own projects and those of people who have done started their own with success.SIDE PROJECT SUCCESSI break down some of the most important things to make your side project or hobby a successful endeavour that gives you benefits back in learning skills, making connections or growing a business. https://perrytheva.imgur.com/all/?third_party=1PODCAST SUCCESS (AND PITFALLS)In the second half of the episode, I dive deeper into specific lessons and surprises I've learnt from running a podcast that I wish I had been aware of when I started.I do not claim to have a multi-million pound podcast and to be living the dream just yet. But I hit my targets for year 1 of getting 100k downloads and $100 per episode (despite them being slightly arbitrary). More importantly I got to do a bunch of really cool shit and meet awesome people and satisfy my curiosity urges. I created a brand and a podcast that now opens doors for me across the world.I won’t pretend to give good advice on how to secure the best advertising, or get a million listeners as I simply haven’t done this. I do give advice on things like ‘how to not lose all your listeners’ or ‘waste hours editing’ as I have done both of those!CONTACTIf you want any more information or advice on launching a podcast or a side project then do reach out to me on twitter as I love helping and giving advice =]Sam:Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/samjamsnaps/)Quora (https://www.quora.com/profile/Sam-Harris-58)Twitter (https://twitter.com/samharristweets)LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharris48/)Sam's blog - SamWebsterHarris.com (https://samwebsterharris.com/)Support the Show - Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/growthmindset)Subscribe!If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. 31: Foolproof Success with Bryony Thomas - Author & Founder of Watertight Marketing

PUBLISHING AND BUSINESS LESSONS FROM A MARKETING MASTERBryony Thomas has run her own marketing agency Watertight Marketing for ten years and has written an amazing book of the same title. Watertight Marketing is one of the best business books I have ever read so I’m honoured to have her on the show. She takes us through her story of starting the business and launching a sell out book, key insights into turning a traditional time based business into a scalable machine that creates value for thousands of people. Along with some amazing life advice.TAKES HOMES FROM THE EPISODESLOW AND STEADY SUCCESSHer book took 4 years to write and the workbooks another year. All the rest of the content and video’s have been in ongoing production ever since. It’s not overnight success. It’s slow and steady iteration and well thought out actions and improvements. and it’s genius!STEP AWAY FROM YOUR BUSINESS TO SCALE ITScale yourself by stepping away from your business and not working IN your business and instead working ON it. A very four hour work week philosophy of forcing yourself to get away from things to make it work from a distance.STICK TO YOUR VALUESBe true to yourself and Don’t let people change your values or style. bryony didn’t let anyone change her title or direction of her book. Equally when she doesn’t work on the things that offer money straight away so that she knows she is working on the things she really values and wants to achieve in the long-term. This helps her avoid getting stuck of the cycle of work you don’t want. PUBLISHERS DON’T HELPDo your own good marketing! publishers don’t do stuff for you and it is hard. and crowdfunding can be a great way to get some people behind your book and help sell it for you. and will motivate you to bloody finish it. STUDY THE BEST BOOKSyou don’t learn much by reading once. re-read the really good books several times so that you are actually a knowledgable person in it. MARKETING MINDSET PODCASTI am launching a new podcast called Marketing Mindset (see what I did there). It’s going to be part of my new business Postary. It’s a platform for easily sending amazing direct mail from the safety of your laptop and digital tools that people need these days like analytics and personalisation which was something you could never do before with the offline channel of print marketing. And whats more it’s all eco friendly. Bryony is one of the first guests on the Marketing Mindset podcast and we have a specific marketing interview. 25: North Korea - Life as a North Korea Tour Guide - [Recorded in the DPRK]

We're very excited to announce our first episode from North Korea. Recorded in the heart of North Korea, Sam talks to his tour guide Ben about the country and his experiences. Sam visited North Korea over Easter 2018 and this podcast is an interview with his tour guide Ben Johnson. We discuss the country and the surprises it has in store for the people that visit. It was an amazing experience and a pleasure to bring some of it back for you. We also discuss the growing industry of dark tourism and challenging yourself to go out of your comfort zone. Sam, Ben and our Korean HostsPresident Kim Jong-Un score card. Very accurate marksmanCanned Food in a Freezer. They clearly didn't know what the display freezer was for.We had a fun English lesson with some students. Actually most of them are pretty damn chill about the entire affair and happy going about their lives and walking their dogs. They certainly live modest lives and don’t have a lot of money as a nation, but they aren’t distracted by social media and all that crap the whole time and if you rushed in trying to save them they’d look at you like your bonkers. It is scary the way news controls our lives and thoughts and the way it makes us percieve them. We of course are very aware of the influence of north korean news on it’s own people which is of course very controlling, yet we pay little attention to our own news and it’s influence on us.I’ve been really enjoyed reading the book ‘Factfullness’ by Hans Rosling which is one of the most informative books about the world around you. He gives an example of an Englishman going to Mexico City which is apparently one of the most dangerous places and yet the people there were scared to visit London because they’d heard of stabbings and crime and riots. and this happened to me exactly when i visited and the book is just full of funny facts we get completely wrong about how bad the world is and is a very positive book to help you question the reality of what your being told.QUESTION NORMALITYBeing shut of from most of society they have a very different impression of normal. As a nation of skinny people they found fat people an amazingly rare and hilarious thing to observe. When a train gets delayed this is a perfect opportunity for everyone to practice a group dance so why just waste time standing around when you could be dancing. They also believe that dark chocolate will make you black and white chocolate will make you white. So one, never buy a north korean lady dark chocolate as a present. and think twice before tucking into your favorite white chocolate bar before chowing down on a milkbar before you lose your tan. That’s something the scientist never warned you aboutTHE WORLD IS GETTING MUCH SMALLERWith the increasing wealth of all nations and decreasing cost of travel the number of tourists is exploding. Places like North Korea and Eritrea and starting to be able to have their own tourism industry as people increasingly want rare and unusual experiences beyond the normal and completely overdone options offered on package holidays where you are just one of a million people doing the same thing.Again going back to the Hans Rosling book there are two ways of looking at this. It’s easy to see the overabundance of people at tourist attractions as annoying and a problem. But it’s actually amazing that so many more people are able to afford to take time off work and enjoy their money and go away and relax.I was really surprised to meet rich North Korean on the train into and out of China who were going on shopping holidays for the latest fashion and things. It was a concept that hadn’t even entered my brain as possible MOST THINGS AREN’T THE END OF THE WORLD. YOU REALLY DON’T NEED TO STRESS - A BIT OF RESILIENCE AND IT’S ALL FINE!Travelling opens your eyes in many ways as I’ve shown. But one of the best things is when everything goes completely wrong and the most terrible stuff happens. and yet you still walk away fine having had this completely bonkers experience. It genuinely makes you feel like there’s no point worrying about anything. Ben’s experience being stranded on different borders or my experience being arrested in Paraguay feels like it’s the end of the world. and yet it all ends up okay. I can only liken it to jumping of a skyscraper and expecting to go splat and then just landing on

23: What on Earth is a Rainbow Gathering and Why You Need to Go

Life under the Rainbow:Running wild in the woods with the naked hippiesRedefining you inhibitions and desires to create an entirely new view of the world and have lots of fun at the same time.Natural fun. no drugs, no alcohol, no technologyWe invite Felix Chandler back to the mic to talk about our experiences at Rainbow gatherings and what people need to know about them. Considering it is possibly one of the most enjoyable, interesting and insightful events I've ever been to it's amazing that most people have never heard of them, so definitely something worth sharing with you the listeners! We try and cover all the things someone who has never been asks and should know before arriving and the effect they had on us including all the challenges it threw at us and our favourite experiences and take homes. As well as rainbow gatherings we also discuss polyamory, the benefits of having and not having and generally put the world to rights on social media and travel. GatheringsMore details about upcoming Rainbow gatherings across the world can be found online here:http://somewhereundertherainbow.org/find-a-gathering/https://www.welcomehome.org/There are usually one or two active facebook groups per gathering and far too many to list here. Some of them can be difficult to join without an invite but you can usually message on one of the forums to be invited or try contacting me direct for an insiders invite into the family =]LESSONSAppreciate thingsThe story of the rich successful guy who wants to go back to being a poor man on the street was really interesting. He had never tasted something so good as a this skinny cat because he was so hungry for it and so appreciative. If you can culture better appreciation of everything around you this is the key to being happier in your lifeRainbow is a great launchpad for travelWhen you want to visit a new country and really learn about it and meet people and have real experiences. It is very hard these days as a tourist going to a new city and trying to actually engage with real life. Going to a Rainbow gathering in the country is a perfect way to meet actual locals and understand what life was like in their history and current times. And you get an awful lot of inspiration and tips for cool things to do in that country and a lot of invites to go and visit people and do fun stuff together. If you see an event happening in a country you’ve wanted to visit it is literally the best place to start hands down. Smile moreI can’t say how nice it was being in a group of people who always smiled at you as you walk along. Every day I walked lightly on my feet thanks to all the smiles. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed practising out and about since. HAlf the people I smile at look away before they get the chance to respond, but genuinely a lot of people look surprised and sile back and have a connection. and some people I even get a high five for no real reason but it’s awesome. So just go about your day assuming everyone will be nicer if you smile at them and thus you can actually make it so.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sex-Dawn-Stray-Modern-Relationships/dp/0061707813/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2VPRE1F17HCJR&keywords=sex+at+dawn&qid=1580470304&s=books&sprefix=sex+a%2Cstripbooks%2C347&sr=1-1)Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science--as well as religious and cultural institutions--has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing. Fewer and fewer couples are getting married, and divorce rates keep climbing as adultery and flagging libido drag down even seemingly solid marriages. In the tradition of the best historical and scientific writing, Sex at Dawn unapologetically upends unwarranted assumptions and unfounded conclusions while offering a revolutionary understanding of why we live and love as we do.Somewhere Under the Rainbow by Tom Thumb (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Somewhere-Under-Rainbow-personal-Gatherings/dp/1482611708/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=somewhere+under+the+rainbow&qid=1580470380&s=books&sr=1-1)This is a well-reviewed book about his experiences at Rainbow gatherings. It’s been described as a great way for those who haven’t gone to learn about it and for those that have been to reminisce and remember what they valued.I hope that is what I have achieved with this podcast but if you want to know more or remember more then this book is the place to go.Status Anxiety - Alain De Botton (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Status-Anxiety-Alain-Botton/dp/0141014865/ref=sr_1_1?crid=TCZJXLBKSSHJ&keywords=status+anxiety+by+alain+de+botton&qid=1580470410&s=books&sprefix=status+an%2Cstripbooks%2C

The business and science behind lightning fast workouts with big results.Marcelo Mesquita is the Founder and CEO of Intense Health, a radical new fitness chain delivering strength and fitness results with only 20-minute workouts. We discuss the science behind the HIT movement and Marcelo's path to starting the business, from opening his first gym at 16 to competing in martial arts and body-building.TIPSATTITUDE TO TIMEIn so many cases you can really leverage your time and this day and age it’s something we’re all running out of. So obviously working out can be quicker, but also meditation and even sleep with new technologies. Also when it comes to business things can go much faster if you are willing to share your business with people who are experienced and know your market and how to grow and avoid mistakes. That said you should also be willing to take things slowly and sensibly and pay the price of time where its due . Scaling a business too fast leads to mistakes and some things just need to be done methodically and patiently so that you can build a strong and stable business.ATTITUDE TO BUSINESSHe saved up to invest in the equipment and took some big but calculated risks on starting it. Didn’t take investment and instead got advice and contacts from his clients a lot of whom were business professionals and he really leveraged his network and asked important questions to take things to the next level. I feel a big similarity to my approach here on the podcast so hopefully, you guys at home are getting the same benefits through listening to all the lessons I’m learning here!LIFE PARTNERSHe’s the first person to ever say he would find his partner earlier in life. But he gave such a good reason that he really just found his best mate that’s into all the things he likes and a shared passion to take on the world together sounds awesome. I’ve always been pretty relaxed with an attitude of the right person will come along when they come along and not worried about it. but suddenly after listening to him, maybe I should prioritise this.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)BODY BY SCIENCE BY DOUG MCGUFF (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=body+by+science+doug+mcguff&i=stripbooks&crid=3LFTPJ5BJM0LX&sprefix=body+by+sci%2Cstripbooks%2C367&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_11)The book that really breaks down the whole science behind High-Intensity and Low-Frequency weight training so you can understand the processes at the cellular level.FAST EXERCISE BY MICHAEL MOSELY (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fast-Exercise-Michael-Mosley/dp/1780721986/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2YW1ATRJE3ZO3&keywords=fast+exercise+dr+michael+mosley&qid=1580462977&s=books&sprefix=fast+exer%2Cstripbooks%2C348&sr=1-1)A researcher and doctors investigation into HIT training and how you can get fitter with just 120 seconds of training a week when done correctly. 18: The Simple Art of Happiness - Bob Asim

Product Manager at Roche Pharmaceuticals(Kindest person I know)Bob Asim is a mid 30-year-old Malaysian professional who has worked at various large medical organisations bringing products to market and into hospitals and GP surgeries such as breast cancer and diabetes medications.Bob is also one of the kindest and happiest people I have ever met and just has some amazing philosophies on life that have really stuck with me and I hope will help you as well.TOP TIPSHAPPINESS THROUGH GENEROSITYNow this is kind of a difficult concept to grasp and initially practice when you’re brought up in a world where you are taught to think for yourself and When you can start deriving happiness from making others happy your life truly changes. When you think of things from other peoples perspectives instead from your own perspective you really unlock a whole extra dimension of happiness that never even existed before and its suddenly becomes remarkably easy to enjoy each day instead of going through life selfishly trying to have more for yourself or feeling owed stuff or victimised when you don’t get as much as others instead of feeling happy that other people are doing well. This also makes you are much nicer person to be around and then other people start doing nice things for you and your life and relationships get a whole lot better.Bob thinks that the ability to be generous should be considered a privilege that you shouldn’t take for granted and should use at all times:1 - The fact you can give anything is a privilege. even just a smile is a privilege that you are happy. giving anything of value is a privilege that you have something of value.2 - Being able to give to others because they are open to receive is also a privilege. Not everyone in life is ready to receive help or advice or any form of gifts from you. So when people are open to generosity you can be grateful that you are able to improve their day. Then to conclude with his biggest philosophy - Having what you need is enough and having more is awesome because you get to give to others. HAPPINESS THROUGH LIVING IN THE MOMENT AND JUST DECIDING TO BE HAPPYDon’t let your expectations of what you want control your happiness. when shit things happen accept them and just move on without being dragged into unhappiness, like Bob and his new kitchen or me and my parking ticket. If you accept reality as it is straight away you can continue to be happy and have good relationships with the people around you. If you kick and scream like a child resisting acceptance of this new fate that has befallen you and blaming those around or shouting at people you are just being stupid, you have to accept this new situation you are in eventually and you are just wasting time.If a problem arises and you let that make you unhappy and get angry or sad, instead of having one problem you create many more problems for yourself and waste your own time being unhappy about life and waste time of others being a dick and life is simply too short too waste with this so just don’t. and then life is much better. And as a bonus when you observe the fact that you could be unhappy right now but have decided not to be, you feel even happier because you aware of how much crap you are avoiding. I appreciate that this is super easy to say and super hard to do. Like i learnt my lesson with the parking ticket ten years ago but still didn’t become great at practicing it till more recently. Some people certainly feel like they are supposed to get angry when someone does them wrong and like it’s violating their principles letting someone get away with something. but if you can look at the big picture and see how much benefit and negative you truly get from following these negative emotions it just always works out worst for yourself. Like buddhist say. ‘Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other man to get sick'STAY TRUE TO YOUR BELIEFSWhen something makes you feel awkward and you know it's wrong yet you feel like it can’t be changed and those around you aren’t doing anything. Don’t just carry on. Have the balls to stick your neck out and risk it. Bob saved patients money and impressed his bosses by being the one willing to tell them about the issues going on with doctors stealing money from patients. He risked being not understood or losing sales of the product for his company by doctors no longer using their products. But he stood up for his belief and the patients and everything worked out.I think we all have times when our morale beliefs are challenged and examples like this are a great reason to have faith in ourselves instead of just following the crowd.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)REPLAY - KEN GRIMWOOD (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=replay+ken+grimwood&i=stripbooks&crid=34URPC1UQLI34&sprefix=replay+%2Cstripbooks%2C361&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_7)The tale of a
