Merry Christmas!  Today, we’re featuring today’s daily devotion from Pastor Greg Laurie for Saturday, December 25, 2021. We hope you have a blessed Christmas Day with friends and family.  --- I heard about a couple that was going out of town for the Christmas weekend. They packed their luggage, dropped off the dog at a friend’s house, and then loaded up their SUV. They pulled out of the driveway and were driving down the street when the woman suddenly turned to her husband and said, “We forgot the baby!” They had to go back and collect their child, whom they had left in the house. That’s what Christmas is like for many people. How easy it is to miss the whole point. We trim our trees, hang our lights, and attend endless events, but we forget about the Baby. Did Jesus come to this earth so that we could shop and spend too much money on Christmas presents? Of course not. He actually came with the express purpose of dying on a cross for our sins. He said that He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45 NLT). The incarnation was for the atonement; the birth of Jesus was so there would be the death of Jesus. Red is the color of Christmas because Jesus’ blood flowed from that cross for us. God offers a gift to you: Eternal life through Jesus Christ. Listen in for a new message from Luke 2. Notes The joy of Christmas is not in what’s opened Christmas day. Joy does not come from what is under the tree but from who died on the tree! The Lord needed Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem to fulfill Micah 5:2. History is His story. Jesus wasn’t a mere man or just one of the prophets. Jesus was God in human flesh! Christmas is not a rags-to-riches story, but rather a riches-to-rags story. When Jesus arrived, almost everyone missed it.  1. The highest message came initially to the lowest of people. 2. The message of the first Christmas was a message of joy!  Great joy which shall be to all people! At the cross, Christ defeated sin. At the resurrection, Jesus defeated death. 3. Fear robs us of the joy of Christmas. “Do not be afraid, the Messiah has come!” The message of Christmas is fear not and have joy! The condition of joy is to let go of fear. Joy and happiness are something you choose, not wait to feel. “Rejoice in the Lord, always. Again, I will say, rejoice!” —Philippians 4:4 Joy is a powerful magnet the Christian has because the nonbeliever has nothing like it. 4. We can have joy this Christmas because we have a Savior: Christ the Lord. Jesus is not just your Savior; Jesus is also your Lord! Sometimes it is easy to forget that the people God chose as Jesus’ parents were young and, in many ways, unprepared. Yet Mary and Joseph trusted in God’s plan and were faithful.  Starting off our Christmas series, Pastor Greg Laurie shows how God fulfills His promises through the obedience of regular people. Listen in for a message from Luke 1 and Matthew titled, “With God, Nothing Is Impossible.” Notes The word for power comes from the root word “dynamite.” Mary saw Jesus enter the world as her son and leave as her Savior. Mary was living in Nazareth. 1. Mary lived a Godly life in an ungodly place. Nazareth could be described as sin city. Mary models for us that it is possible to live a holy life in an unholy place. “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young.” Mary was a nobody in a nothing town in the middle of nowhere. God uses “nobodies” to tell everybody about somebody. The Lord hand-picked Mary to fulfill this prophecy. Troubled means “disturbed,” “confused,” or “failure to function.” 2. Mary was surprised that God had selected her and not someone else. Gabriel the Archangel tells Mary what the name of her child, the Messiah, was to be. Mary was willing to do whatever God wants! 3. Mary obeyed and magnified God. Mary wonders how she, being a virgin, will conceive and Gabriel says, “For with God nothing will be impossible.” —Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible! Joseph is an unsung hero of the Christmas story. 4. God chose Joseph just as surely as He chose Mary, to be a stepfather, a father figure for Jesus on Earth! Joseph was doubtful about the supernatural conception. The angel of the Lord came to Joseph, too! If there were no virgin birth, there would be no sinless Christ. If there is no sinless Christ, there would be no atonement. 1. Jesus came to die and give His life as a ransom for many. “For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve others, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” —Mark 10:45 2. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to bring life in all of its fullness. 3. Christ was born in a manger so that we could be born again! God has given us the ultimate gift. Read the full devotion below! --- “Then Peter called to him, ‘Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.’ ‘Yes, come,’ Jesus said.” —Matthew 14:28–29  Courage or Fear? Let’s give credit where credit is due. No one else volunteered to walk on water—not James, not John, and not any of the other disciples. But Peter did. So Jesus told him, “Yes, come” (Matthew 14:29 NLT). What happened next? Matthew tells us that “Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. ‘Save me, Lord!’ he shouted” (verses 29–30 NLT). Peter sank because he was afraid and because he took his eyes off Jesus. When fear reigns, faith is driven away. Fear and faith don’t hang out together. Either faith will be there, or fear will be there. But when one walks in, the other walks out. Sometimes we’re doing well, and then we look at the wind and waves in our lives, and we begin to sink. We check our email or social media, or we turn on the news, and it causes our hearts to panic. Peter began to sink because he took his eyes off Jesus. And when take our eyes off Jesus, we’re going to sink as well. When we forget God’s promises to us, we’ll start to sink. But then Peter called out to Jesus, and He “immediately reached out and grabbed [Peter]. ‘You have so little faith,’ Jesus said. ‘Why did you doubt me?’” (verse 31 NLT). In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I heard a doctor on the news say something that I’d never heard before: Courage uses the same pathways as fear. How does one go from being an enemy of the Christian faith to one of its key evangelists? In this episode, Pastor Greg Laurie surveys the most stunning conversion in the book of Acts—when Saul came to faith. Notes God gives us absolutes for our own protection. Religion can turn you from God. God promises that His Word will not return void. “Saul was uttering threats with every breath.” —Acts 9:1 Jesus is the only Way to God because the Bible says so! What are you really passionate about? What motivates you? In this Sunday morning episode, Pastor Greg Laurie gives us a potent example of living wholeheartedly to know God and make Him known. Discover the key to a well-lived life! Notes The priorities of the early church were prayer, Bible study, and evangelism. When God is working, Satan will always be attacking. Happiness is not found in looking for self-fulfillment but self-denial. An early death means an early crown. 1. Stephen was well-respected. Integrity and character are what you are in the dark. 2. Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy Spirit means to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. 3. Stephen was filled with wisdom. 4. Stephen was faithful in the little things. You can never be too small for God to use, only too big! 5. Stephen looked for opportunities and seized them. “But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 6:55 When You obey God, He will fill you with the Spirit. “And they cast him out of the city and stoned him.” —Acts 7:58 God gave Stephen the grace he needed when he needed it. As Stephen stood for Jesus on Earth, Jesus stood for Stephen in Heaven! The Bible promises a believer will enter Christ’s presence immediately following death. “Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.” —Psalm 90:12 “Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator.” —Ecclesiastes 12:1 1. For the Christian walking in the will of God, death will come at the appointed time. 2. The Christian does not have to fear death. Sleep is only used to describe death for the Christian, not the non-Christian. 3. In Heaven, all our questions will be answered. 4. God can bring good out of the worst kind of bad. Stephen’s life was short, but it was full. Stephen went to Heaven. Where will you go when you die? How should Christians live in the midst of social upheaval? In a timely message, Pastor Greg Laurie offers encouragement—as well as a blueprint—for countercultural living from the book of Acts. The word revolution not only means “upheaval” and “change;” it also means “turning around” or “rotating.” The death of Jesus was God’s predetermined plan (Acts 2:23–24).  “Organized Christianity which fails to make a disturbance is dead.” —G. Campbell Morgan The book of Acts is simply a picture of normal Christianity. The book of Acts is a record of the acts of the Holy Spirit, covering a 30-year period from AD 33–63. The book of Acts was authored by the Holy Spirit, speaking through Dr. Luke. The name Theophilus means, “Lover of God.”  1. Before you can change the world, you must first be changed.  The disciple’s greatness was not because of who they were as individuals; it was because God put His hand on them. Jesus did not call these men who became apostles because they were great; they were great because Jesus called them! The word used for appeared refers to the eyeball. Before they could change the world, Jesus needed to change them. Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). 2. The church had a job to do, and so do we!   “You will be My witnesses, telling people about Me everywhere!” (Acts 1:8). Jesus is not late in returning; there is something He wants from us.  3. We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to do what God calls us to do.  The word power comes from the Greek word “Dunamis.” It’s never too late to be used by God. One day we will all be weighed on God’s divine scales. What kind of weight does your life have right now? There is a last night for every nation and every person. Are you a lonely soul? This may be the last time you have to make this commitment to follow Christ. Jesus can forgive you of all of your sin. Realize you are a sinner who needs a Savior.
