God is angry with me and wants to ruin my life. “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” —Jeremiah 31:3 2. God loves me and accepts me as I am (this is the opposite of the first one and is also wrong in a different way). God does love you and accepts you as you are, but He does not want to leave you that way! 3. Follow your heart. The modern use of the word heart is primarily thought of as emotion. Do not follow your heart; follow God’s heart (in other words, His Will). “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.” —Ezekiel 36:26 4. Trust your gut. The problem with trusting your gut is when selfishness is the motivating factor. Instead of trusting our gut, we should trust in the Lord. 5. We need to learn to love ourselves. The real problem is, we love ourselves too much. 6. You deserve to be happy. “Every man, whatsoever his condition, desires to be happy.” —Augustine (A.D. 397) God is happy! Jesus said, “Happy are they that hear the Word of God and keep it.” 7. God wants us to follow our dreams. God loves you and His plan for you is better than your plan. God is omniscient (all-knowing). What bothers you or brings tears to your eyes is a concern to God. God knows your tomorrow! The way to life is through death, the way to up is down, and the way to happiness is sadness. 8. We need to live our lives God’s way, not the way of the world. Wisdom is known by its actions. Wisdom is known by its good fruit. God’s wisdom is pure (moral purity). A wise person is not so arrogant to think they cannot learn anything; they will talk to a person, not about a person. We need to be bridge builders, not bridge burners. 9. If I live a good life, I will go to Heaven. There will be bad people in Heaven. There will be good people in Hell. It is not enough to know about God; we need to know God. We’re back in our Walk This Way series for this Sunday message. Open your Bible to James 3 and join Pastor Greg Laurie as he goes over the power of our words. Get good encouragement from this message! Notes There is power in what we say to others. Words matter, especially words of encouragement. More people have died by words than any weapon of man ever devised. The tongue is the most destructive weapon on the face of the earth. 1. What you say reveals who you are. The control of the tongue is a barometer of Christian maturity. The first sin committed after the fall was a sin of the tongue (Genesis 3:12). 2. We need to control what we say. James is telling us that the uncontrolled tongue has a direct pipeline to Hell. 3. Our words used right can do so much good. 4. Our words used wrong can do so much damage. Ways our words hurt others: 1. Gossip and backbiting (Proverbs 20:19). Gossip is like junk food—you know it is bad, but you eat it anyway. Ways our words hurt others: 2. Innuendo. Ways our words hurt others: 3. Misuse of our words in flattery. Gossip is saying behind a person’s back what you would never say to their face. Flattery is saying to a person’s face what you would never say behind their back. 1. Controlling your words is a sign of spiritual maturity. T – Is it true? H – Will it help? I – Is it inspiring? N – Is it necessary? K – Is it kind? 2. The greatest use of our words is to proclaim God’s Word. When you speak for God, take it very seriously! 3. Use your words to build up, not tear down. 4. Use your words to praise God, because this is the highest and greatest use of our tongue. It’s not enough to think it; you need to say it out loud! 5. Use your words to preach the gospel, because this is God’s primary way of reaching nonbelievers. 6. Use your words to confess your sins. You can think it, but you need to say it out loud … I have sinned. The best use of our words: Build up, not tear down; encourage, not discourage. Praise God. Proclaim the gospel. Confess your sins. In this Sunday message, Pastor Greg Laurie gives us encouragement perfect for the New Year with a message titled, “Happiness: Where to Find It.” Most people deep down inside want to be happy. It’s even in our Declaration of Independence that in the United States of America we want to be happy. Even those who say they don’t want to be happy, and want to be unhappy, find a certain happiness in their unhappiness. You may be surprised to know that God wired you to want to be happy, and according to the Bible, you can be happy—you should be happy. But you just need to look for it in the right place. Here are a few places not to look for happiness. Being beautiful or handsome will not bring personal happiness. Sometimes people think, “If I was as handsome or beautiful as the people that I see in magazines or as the movie stars, I’d be happy.” We’re always trying to look our best with surgery, airbrushing, Photoshop, Instagram filters, and other enhancements. But there will always be someone more attractive, and physical attractiveness will not make you happy. Personal possessions will not bring personal happiness. Your life may improve or be more comfortable, but possessions will not bring the real happiness you’re searching for. For many, having more money leads to depression. Proverbs 27:20 says, “Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied” (NKJV). Having relationships will not make you happy. We are wired for a relationship. We are wired to have someone to love and marry one day. That’s not bad, but if you say marriage is going to make you happy, you are going to be in for a big shock. People let us down. Parents let down children. Children let down parents. Husbands let down wives. Wives let down husbands. Pursuing pleasure will never bring personal happiness. There are many fine pleasures in life that are good. A nice meal. A beautiful sunset. Time with people you love. Those are good pleasures, and then there are perverse pleasures that are sinful. The Bible even says these can be fun for a time, but there are repercussions. 1 Timothy 5:6 says that she “who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives” (NKJV). Here’s the bottom line of Paul’s happiness, found in Philippians 4:4. He says, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” (NASB). That is the key. It is rejoicing in the Lord. It is not rejoicing in your condition, rejoicing in your circumstances, rejoicing in your current emotional state, or something else. It’s rejoicing in the Lord and filling your mind with the truth of God. It changes your outlook. I’m not talking about positive thinking. Here’s something surprising: the story of Christmas relates to a time before Christ’s birth. Pastor Greg Laurie explains just how and leaves us with a stronger appreciation for the holiday. Listen in! Notes This story of redemption, the Christmas story, started a long time ago in a garden—and it began with a tree. The tree of the Knowledge of God and Evil. “The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise. So she ate some of the fruit.” —Genesis 3:6 The Lord gives the first Christmas verse, not Isaiah 9:6 or Micah 5:2 but Genesis 3:15 where God speaks directly to Satan. God the Father was effectively saying, “Satan, there is coming One who will crush you.” Jesus would be born to die so that we might live. The shadow of the cross lay over the beauty of that first Christmas night. The Pharaoh tried to exterminate the Jews, starting with the Hebrew baby boys. The wicked Haman tried to have the Jews wiped off the face of the earth. King Herod, hearing that One was born “The King of the Jews,” tried to kill Jesus. Nothing will stop Christ from coming again! Jesus being God, pre-existed, and He, along with the Holy Spirit and the Father, are co-equal and co-eternal. From our perspective on Earth: Unto us, a child is born. From Heaven’s perspective: Unto us, a Son is given. Jesus is in the Old Testament, concealed, and in the New Testament, revealed. A Theophany is an appearance of God. A Christophany is an appearance of Christ before Bethlehem. Note: It was not an angel of the Lord but the angel of the Lord. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and staff they comfort me.” —Psalm 23:4 A shepherd has two tools: a rod and a staff. Read: Genesis 32:24–30 Never be afraid to commit an unknown future to a known God. Something changed in the heart of Jacob. He went from wanting to win to worshipping, from fighting to surrendering, from wrestling to nestling. Jesus has always been there, and He will always be there in the future. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the people God chose as Jesus’ parents were young and, in many ways, unprepared. Yet Mary and Joseph trusted in God’s plan and were faithful. Pastor Greg Laurie shows how God fulfills His promises through the obedience of regular people. Listen in for a message from Luke 1 and Matthew titled, “With God, Nothing Is Impossible.” Notes The word for power comes from the root word “dynamite.” Mary saw Jesus enter the world as her son and leave as her Savior. Mary was living in Nazareth. 1. Mary lived a Godly life in an ungodly place. Nazareth could be described as sin city. Mary models for us that it is possible to live a holy life in an unholy place. “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young.” Mary was a nobody in a nothing town in the middle of nowhere. God uses “nobodies” to tell everybody about somebody. The Lord hand-picked Mary to fulfill this prophecy. Troubled means “disturbed,” “confused,” or “failure to function.” 2. Mary was surprised that God had selected her and not someone else. Gabriel the Archangel tells Mary what the name of her child, the Messiah, was to be. Mary was willing to do whatever God wants! 3. Mary obeyed and magnified God. Mary wonders how she, being a virgin, will conceive and Gabriel says, “For with God nothing will be impossible.” —Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible! Joseph is an unsung hero of the Christmas story. 4. God chose Joseph just as surely as He chose Mary, to be a stepfather, a father figure for Jesus on Earth! Joseph was doubtful about the supernatural conception. The angel of the Lord came to Joseph, too! If there were no virgin birth, there would be no sinless Christ. If there is no sinless Christ, there would be no atonement. 1. Jesus came to die and give His life as a ransom for many. “For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve others, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” —Mark 10:45 2. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to bring life in all of its fullness. 3. Christ was born in a manger so that we could be born again! God has given us the ultimate gift.
