S2 Ep 18S2E18 – A King and His Kingdom (Defending Theonomy, Part 2)

00:30 - Defending Theonomy, Part 2: What does it mean for Jesus to reign over all powers and dominions? What is the Kingdom of God? What does it look like, where is it, and how do we enter? What does it mean for Jesus to have all authority on heaven and on earth? S2 Ep 17S2E17 – Defending Theonomy (Part 1)

00:15 - Introduction to Theonomy. What is Theonomy and what is a basic definition of it? What does Deuteronomy 4:5-8 say and how does it apply to us today? 09:48 - On today's program I play and review several clips from a recent Pastors Talk episode produced by 9Marks. The hosts, Jonathan Leeman and Mark Dever, interview Carl Trueman about his most recent book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. Although the book and the interview are excellent, a few comments are made about theonomy that are worth bringing up. The men raise several straw men arguments regarding theonomy before knocking them down, seemly misunderstanding what theonomy actually teaches. S2 Ep 16S2E16 – Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)

On today's program I provide an audio recording of a recent article I wrote in defense of Sola Scriptura. I have several friends and family who are either Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox, so many of our discussions tend to revolve around the authority of Scripture. In the article, I first present a case for Sola Scriptura. Then I offer a few criticisms, specifically focused on the Roman Catholic perspective. Finally, I end with several key questions and answers. S2 Ep 15S2E15 – Behavioral Economics (Interview with Steve Moyer)

On today's program I had the pleasure of interviewing Steve Moyer on the topic of behavioral economics. Steve is a certified financial planner and a chartered financial consultant, currently working for Mariner Wealth Advisors. He is also a Christian and has spent his career applying Christian principles to the realm of economics. We cover a lot of topics today, from behavioral finance to the role of government in economics. Please come check out the conversation! S2 Ep 14S2E14 – The American Colonies

(00:36) Law of the Day: Numbers 5:5-10 – “When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person realizes his guilt, he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong..." (09:03) American Colonies and Lesser Magistrates: Today I finished up looking at a few examples of lesser magistrates by considering the American colonies. Under whose authority were they founded? Did they answer to the king or parliament? What was the phrase "no taxation without representation" all about? And was the American War for Independence a just war? S2 Ep 13S2E13 – Idolatry Watch (Safeism and Tyranny)

(01:00) Law of the Day: Leviticus 5:1 – “If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity.” (09:18) Idolatry Watch: Today I look at two recent clips, one from Vice-President Kamala Harris and the other from Secretary Pete Buttigieg. VP Harris presents a false gospel of vaccines while playing fast and loose with the COVID numbers. Secretary Buttigieg sets a new goal of zero traffic deaths nationwide. Both are examples where idolatry leads to a false gospel of mankind's power and ability. This is the recipe for tyranny. S2 Ep 12S2E12 – Interview with Brad Lanning

(01:40) Interview: Today I had the opportunity to interview Brad Lanning, who is running for the 1st Congressional District of Pennsylvania. We discuss his background as well as his reasons for running. We also consider some key topics, including vaccine tracking, minimum wage laws, the Paris Climate Agreement, and concerns about China. Finally, we end the conversation on the topic of human rights, the image of God, and the role of government. S2 Ep 11S2E11 – Lesser Magistrates of History (Magdeburg)

(00:50) Part I: Law of the Day (Unsolved Murders) - "If in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess someone is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him, then your elders and your judges shall come out, and they shall measure the distance to the surrounding cities..." (Deut. 21:1-9) (11:33) Part II: Today I consider another example of lesser magistrates, this time during the Protestant Reformation. The Protestants, named for the official legal protest that they submitted to the Emperor, asked for religious liberty. While after years of conflict the Emperor was able to force nearly all of Germany to submit to Catholicism, one city stood alone in defiance. That city was Magdeburg which, through its lesser magistrates, was able to win its religious freedom. S2 Ep 10S2E10 – Lesser Magistrates of History (Jehoiada and Petronius)

(01:15) Part I: Law of the Day - "You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD." (Lev. 19:18) (11:05) Part II: Today I look at some historical examples of lesser magistrates. First, I discuss Jehoiada from 2 Kings 11 and his resistance to Athaliah the usurper. Second, I consider the Roman Governor Publius Petronius and his resistance to Emperor Caligula. Both men had no guarantee of success, yet they stood firm in the face of tyranny and certain death, not out of a sense of rebellion, but in order to do the right thing. S2 Ep 9S2E9 – Defy Tyrants (Replay of Interview with Pastor Trewhella)

(Originally aired in March, 2021) Part I: Law of the Day - "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.” (Lev. 19:9-10) (Timestamp 17:25) Part II: Interview with Pastor Matthew Trewhella about his book The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates As always, if you have any civic/government related questions, feel free to email me at [email protected], and I will be happy to address them on the program. S2 Ep 8S2E8 – Idolatry and Civil Disobedience, Part 5

Part 1: Law of the Day (Matthew 22:15-22) - “Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?....” Part 2: Today I connect the topic of idolatry with that of vaccine and mask mandates. I consider some of the common phrases or mottos that we see publicly displayed. I also look at the speech given by Governor Kathy Hochul of New York a few months ago. Are these speeches just examples of flamboyant language, or is something deeper taking place? In what ways has the vaccine become idolatrous? What should our response be? S2 Ep 7S2E7 – Idolatry and Civil Disobedience, Part 4

Part 1: Law of the Day (1 Corinthians 10:23-33) - “...But if someone says to you, 'This has been offered in sacrifice,' then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience...?" Part 2: Today I continue with the series on idolatry and civil disobedience. In this episode, I consider the various phases, or steps, of civil disobedience. This includes prayer/petition, escape, and self-defense. I also look at what it means for lesser magistrates to resist higher magistrates. When a whole community of people cannot escape, how do they engage in civil disobedience? S2 Ep 6S2E6 – Idolatry and Civil Disobedience, Part 3

Part 1: Law of the Day (Deuteronomy 7:17-26) - “...You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the LORD your God. And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, for it is devoted to destruction." Part 2: Today I continue with the series on idolatry and civil disobedience. In this episode, I look at the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. I consider why the Christians were persecuted, how it was implemented, and how they responded. Lastly, I discuss the martyrdom of Cyprian, a Christian leader from North Africa. S2 Ep 5S2E5 – Idolatry and Civil Disobedience, Part 2

Part 1: Law of the Day (Deuteronomy 12:29-32) - “When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.’ You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the LORD hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.” Part 2: Today I continue with the series on idolatry and civil disobedience. In this episode, I look at how to detect idols within a culture. This includes either things that are inherently wicked or good things that have become idols. I also look at how Christians have responded to cultural idols in Scripture as well as historically. Finally, I consider how Christians were perceived in the Roman Empire and how they reacted to the pagan idolatry within it. S2 Ep 4S2E4 – Idolatry and Civil Disobedience, Part I

Part 1: Law of the Day (Exodus 23:13) - “Pay attention to all that I have said to you, and make no mention of the names of other gods, nor let it be heard on your lips.” Part 2: Today I begin another series on the topic of idolatry and civil disobedience. In this first episode, I define idolatry and discuss what it looks like. Passages like Romans 1 and Isaiah 44 are central to understanding the nature of idolatry. I also look at how idolatry leads to death and can never result in life. S2 Ep 3S2E3 – Climate Change and Judgment, Part II

Part 1: Law of the Day (Leviticus 25:1-7): “The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you, the land shall keep a Sabbath to the LORD...” Part 2: Today I continue with the topic of climate change and consider several passages from the Old Testament prophets. I also look at how secularism views climate change and how this also is a religious system. Both secularism and Christianity have a concept of sin, atonement, and good works. The question is whether we will serve God or idols. S2 Ep 2S2E2 – Climate Change and Judgment, Part I

Part 1: Law of the Day (Deuteronomy 22:6-7): “If you come across a bird’s nest in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. You shall let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long.” Part 2: Today I introduce the topic of climate change and begin to look at what the Bible says, if anything, about it. I also look at judgment and the different types of judgment that we see in Scripture. The secular prophets view climate change as a form of judgment against humans. In this series I show where they are correct and where they are wrong. S1 Ep 31S1E31 – The Sin of Pride Month

Part 1: Law of the Day - “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” (Lev. 18:22) Part 2 (26:00) - I review and critique a portion of the most recent Bucks County Commissioner Meeting from June 2, 2021. The first ten minutes of the meeting involved a proclamation in support of LGBTQ+ Pride month. This proclamation was received by three individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. I point out the idolatry that is being celebrated, culminating in the flaunting of sin in the face of God. Ultimately, there is always a god of the system and there is always a law of that system. The question is: which god and which law? S1 Ep 30S1E30 – Christians and Non-Violence

Today I was joined by two men from Sattler College in Boston, Dean Taylor (President) and Zach Johnson (Dean of Students). I invited them onto the show to discuss the topic of Christian non-violence. While they advocated for that position, my friend and fellow military officer, Gordon Beecroft, joined me to defend a Christian view of justified violence (e.g. capital punishment, self-defense, and just war). Our discussion covered multiple areas, such as the application of God's law, the role of Christians as ambassadors for Christ, and the nature of God's Kingdom. While we could not cover every significant area, this discussion serves as a starting point that we hope will be useful for all Christians who wish to dive deeper into understanding their role in this world. He shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. S1 Ep 28S1E28 – Interview with Senator Doug Mastriano

Part I: Law of the Day - “Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. And on the day you cross over the Jordan to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them; you shall build an altar to the LORD your God of uncut stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God, and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God. And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.” (Deut. 27:1-8) Part II (Around 14:00): Interview with Senator Doug Mastriano of Pennsylvania's 33rd district. And Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at the Feast of Booths, when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place that he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.” (Deut. 31:9-13) Part II: Interview with Joel Settecase from The Think Institute As always, if you have any civic/government related questions, feel free to email me at [email protected], and I will be happy to address them on the program. S1 Ep 20S1E20 – Holding Rulers Accountable (Lex Rex Part 11)

Part I: Law of the Day - "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear." (Deut. 21:18-21) Part II: We finish looking at Lex Rex, by Samuel Rutherford. In the final chapter, Rutherford asks if rulers are accountable to the people. If they are not, then there is no argument against tyranny. If they are, then it is the responsibility of the people to hold them accountable. Part I: Law of the Day - "You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people." (Ex. 22:28) Part II: We continue walking through the book Lex Rex, by Samuel Rutherford. In chapter twenty, we consider whether people may defend themselves against oppression. In chapter twenty-one, we look at whether the people can wage war without the ruler. On today's episode I continue walking through the book Lex Rex, by Samuel Rutherford. In chapter eighteen, we consider whether there is a difference between the person and the office. In chapter nineteen, we look at whether we should flee from or fight against tyrants. Furthermore, does it matter whether or not we are being persecuted for Christ? S1 Ep 17S1E17 – Resisting a Tyrant (Lex Rex Part 8)

On today's episode I continue walking through the book Lex Rex, by Samuel Rutherford. In chapter sixteen, we look at whether the ruler has the final authority to interpret the law. In chapter seventeen, we consider the situation where the people and their representatives may resist a tyrant. These are vital issue issue, for if the ruler is the final interpreter of the law, none may challenge him. And if the people may never resist a tyrant, he can murder them at will. S1 Ep 16S1E16 – The Law is Above the King (Lex Rex Part 7)

On today's episode I continue walking through the book Lex Rex, by Samuel Rutherford. In chapter fourteen, we look at whether the safety of the ruler is more important than that of the people. In chapter fifteen, we consider whether the ruler is above the law. These are both key issues, for if the ruler is more important than the people, than the people can be sacrificed for the good of the ruler. And if the ruler is above the law, then the ruler plays the part of God. S1 Ep 9S1E9 – Defending Theonomy, Part 2 (Response to White Horse Inn)

Today is the second part of my defense of theonomy. Last episode, I responded to a 9Marks podcast episode hosted by Jonathan Leeman and Mark Dever. Today, I look at a recent episode from the White Horse Inn podcast, hosted by Dr. Michael Horton. While the episode originally aired back in 2008, it was re-released a few weeks ago prior to the election. So, today I look at some of the statements that the hosts make, showing some inconsistencies in how they understand God's law. Again, theonomy does not mean making a carbon-copy of Old Testament Israel. It means recognizing that every system has a god and every god has a law. Here is the link to the White Horse Inn podcast episode (re-released October 21, 2020): White Horse Inn - Christianity and Politics As always, if you have any civic/government related questions, feel free to email me at [email protected], and I will be happy to address them on the program. S1 Ep 8S1E8 – Defending Theonomy, Part 1 (Response to 9Marks)

Today is the first part of a two-part series on a defense of theonomy. In part one, I respond to a recent 9Marks podcast episode hosted by Jonathan Leeman and Mark Dever. They interview T. David Gordon, who critiques theonomy and reacts to its apparent growth in popularity. I look at some of the statements that they make, showing that what they are really attacking is not theonomy but a straw-man. Theonomy does not mean making a carbon-copy of Old Testament Israel. It means recognizing that every system has a god and every god has a law. Today I look at the recent situation regarding Twitter, Facebook, and possible congressional subpoenas. What is the difference between being a publisher and a platform? S1 Ep 6S1E6 – God’s Law, Man’s Law

On today's episode I look at how God's law is the foundation for all law and how man's law should be viewed in light of that reality. We see God's law both in nature and in Scripture, yet it is all a reflection of His character. But when man's law deviates or contradicts God's law, does man's law stop being a law? Was it ever really a law at all? As always, if you have any civic/government related questions, feel free to email me at [email protected], and I will be happy to address them in future episodes. S1 Ep 5S1E5 – Understanding the Law, Part 2

On today's episode I finished looking at how God's law can be applied to God's people under the New Covenant. I show how the apostles understood and applied Old Testament laws to the New Testament Church and I also provide some additional examples of how we can do that today. As Christians, we have a tendency to neglect studying God's law. Yet we must never forget that God's law serves a vital function in the 21st century. S1 Ep 4S1E4 – Special Edition: How to Fight and When to Fight

Today is a special edition episode that I did in light of both the passing of RBG and the recent comments on justice by Tim Keller. Given that the Republicans have seemingly decided to proceed with filling the empty seat on the Supreme Court, I want to look at how to fight with both integrity and honor. As for Tim Keller, I will be looking at when to fight and take a stand on issues of morality. While we cannot be black and white when God allows for grey, we must not be grey when God declares something to be black and white. S1 Ep 3S1E3 – Understanding the Law, Part 1

On today's episode I look at how God's law applied to the people of Israel and what it means for Jesus Christ to fulfill the law. Why does it matter that Jesus is the new High Priest and has inaugurated a New Covenant? How does that affect the way that the law applies to those who are in Christ? Those are just a few of the questions that I address. Finally, I briefly touch on the traditional division of God's law into three categories: ceremonial, civil, and moral. S1 Ep 2S1E2 – Why the Law?

On today's episode I look at what God's law is and why Christians should care about it. I also discuss the three uses of the law as set forth in Scripture. Sadly, too many people call themselves followers of Christ but have no idea what that means for how they should live. I would argue that the primary reason for that is because of biblical illiteracy, especially when it comes to God's law.
