Dow Jones experts had predicted the rate would soar to 19.5% with another 8 million jobs lost, but the economists weren't even close. The economy actually created more than 2.5 million jobs in May, the Labor Department reported. The May gain was by far the biggest one-month jobs gain in U.S. history since at least 1939. Supreme Court may consider making it easier to sue police for misconduct https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-may-consider-making-it-easier-sue-police-misconduct-n1225856 WASHINGTON — As calls grow nationwide for reforms in law enforcement following the death of George Floyd, the Supreme Court will soon announce if it will jump into the debate by considering whether it should be easier to sue police for serious misconduct. Law enforcement officers who behave badly are rarely prosecuted, so lawsuits brought by victims of misconduct are often the only way to hold them accountable. And there's no other way for victims to get compensation for a violation of their rights. But a string of decisions by the Supreme Court has made it very difficult for victims to win in court. When Things Fall Apart: To Mend Our Social Fabric, These Are the Principles That Must Guide Us https://fee.org/articles/when-things-fall-apart-to-mend-our-social-fabric-these-are-the-principles-that-must-guide-us/ From lockdowns, to police brutality, to riots, only a principled approach can make things better. Worries race through one's mind. How could things have gone so out of control so quickly? Young people just starting out in life wonder how they will get by. Parents wonder what kind of lives their children will have in such a world. Will they be able to prosper? Will they even be safe from violence? Thoughts like this can send us reeling. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Is This an Insurrection? || EP 260

E

Patreon.com/GoodMorningLiberty MasterMyTrades.com Trump went from freedom fighter to authoritarian in about a week https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/02/politics/what-matters-june-1/index.html (CNN)The moment was made for TV. With a protest just beyond the White House complex, President Donald Trump made a last-minute decision to give a brief address asserting his authority to impose order on US streets -- then departed the White House and walked across a zone freshly cleared by mounted police, to stand with a Bible outside St. John's Church across Lafayette Square. The church had suffered damage in a fire Sunday night. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington said after Trump's walk that she was "outraged." "I am outraged. The President did not pray when he came to St. John's, nor as you just articulated, did he acknowledge the agony of our country right now," Budde told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "AC360." Tear gas in the capital -- With a haze of tear gas and police pushing back protesters on the north side of the White House, Trump said in the Rose Garden on the south side of the building that he'd call up US troops to keep Americans safe from each other. Pushing back protesters on cue -- Moments before he spoke, police had advanced on live TV to disperse peaceful protesters, some kneeling with their hands up, creating an image of unrest where none had existed. Rule of law -- Earlier, with barely a nod to the police brutality that had sparked the demonstrations, Trump promised a strict rule-of-law response, called smatterings of violence that sprang from large protests "domestic terror" and said he would bring "thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers" to help strictly enforce curfews on federal land in DC. The Insurrection Act -- While he stopped short of invoking an 1807 law -- the Insurrection Act -- to call up federal troops to US cities, he kept the option open and recommended governors call up even more National Guard troops. Tens of thousands have already been called up for both coronavirus and civil unrest. (Note: That 1807 law was most notably used by Republicans and Democratic presidents in the 1960s to force desegregation. Trump would be using it to squelch calls for social justice. So we have evolved). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

MasterMyTrades.com Patreon.com/GoodMorningLiberty Trump targets social media companies with executive order after Twitter fact-checks his tweets CNBC President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order cracking down on "censorship" by social media sites, a move widely seen by critics as retaliation against Twitter's decision to slap fact-checking labels on the president's tweets. Trump executive order says social media companies 'censoring' speech https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/trump-executive-order-says-social-media-companies-censoring-speech-in-us President Trump is expected to order a review of the federal law that protects social media companies from content posted by their users days after Twitter labeled two of his tweets "potentially misleading." Trump is scheduled to sign the executive order on Thursday. A draft of the executive order seeks to limit the legal protections shielding internet companies and websites such as Twitter and Facebook from lawsuits, making it easier for federal agencies to hold the companies liable. George Floyd protest turns deadly; Minneapolis mayor requests National Guard NBC The mayor of Minneapolis asked the Minnesota National Guard to move in after protests in the city over the death of George Floyd in the custody of police escalated Wednesday night with a fatal shooting near the site of the demonstrations, widespread looting, fires and the deployment of tear gas. "I cannot risk the safety of innocent people and so that is what I've been sworn to uphold and that is what I am dedicated to do," Mayor Jacob Frey told NBC affiliate KARE. "We can have both things. Take the Shutdown Skeptics Seriously https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/05/take-shutdown-skeptics-seriously/611419/ Should states ease pandemic restrictions or extend lockdowns and shelter-in-place orders into the summer? That question confronts leaders across the United States. President Trump says that "we have to get our country open." And many governors are moving quickly in that direction. Critics are dismayed. Citing forecasts that COVID-19 deaths could rise to 3,000 per day in June, they say that reopening without better defenses against infections is reckless. That assessment may well be correct. Many insist it is immoral, too. The columnist Amy Z. Quinn says the Trump administration is "choosing money over lives." In a CNN news analysis, Daniel Burke offers this characterization of America's choice: "Should we reopen the economy to help the majority or protect the lives of the vulnerable?" --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support Learn more about your ad choices. Alyssa Milano Discovers Due Process https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/04/alyssa-milano-discovers-due-process/ Only some women are to be believed, when it's politically convenient. It's one thing to adopt a poorly formed set of principles and foist them on others at every opportunity. It's another to apply those principles unflinchingly to one's political opponents while giving allies a free pass. Milano's pro-due-process statement on the accusations against Biden is, in essence, the correct one, just as Biden's recent defense of himself was justifiable. Due process is an essential part of the liberal legal tradition and a foundational part of our culture; there's nothing wrong with invoking "innocent until proven guilty" on one's own behalf or that of a friend. There is, however, quite a bit wrong with invoking this principle only when it suits you and jettisoning it when it comes to people holding political beliefs you find abhorrent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support Learn more about your ad choices.
