Give Me Back My... the Podcast

From the director Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla, Hideaki Anno brings a classic anime to life with Cutie Honey. The argument during the show was if this is an action movie or not. Charlie makes a good argument that this is comedy adventure rather than action, but the kill count is just as high Missing in Action, if not more. With guns, sword fights and giant explosions how can this NOT be an action movie regardless of its absurdity. I had to pull in my Good Beer Bad Movie Night co-host Troy to help make my argument, but opinions couldn’t be more different and the episode benefits from the dissonance. No matter what side of the fence you’re on, this is a banger of an episode.

Greetings, listeners. Our Grand Evil Overlord and Nate (I need to come up with a cooler name for Nate than “Nate.” Boooring) foolishly turn the reigns of the podcast over to me 'Pete' for the month of February. To what nonsense will I subject their unprepared brains? To start off, I felt like I needed to class this joint up and introduce an award-winning Indie film from France called Raw. Arguably (and we did) more of a coming of age than horror, Raw is powerful, beautiful and horrifying. Despite it’s slow pace, Raw is a strong recommend if you’re looking for something different from the mainstream horror.

In a world where sequels run rampant, three knuckleheads couldn’t contain themselves to make a nice and casual anniversary episode. Why is it whenever there’s a mountain of bodies to count it’s always these three? Can they not go one anniversary episode without death and destruction in their wake? What the hell is even happening in Missing in Action?!!! Tune in for the explosive finale to our two year anniversary Q&A episode! Well...we've made it another year apparently, what started out as just a fun hobby has now turned into a labor of love. Alot has changed in two years but somehow we've managed to keep pushing forward and growing as a podcast and building a fantastic community around us. So this week we reached out to you the fans and gave you the opportunity to ask us anything at all while we review the Chuck Norris classic 'Missing in Action'. As it turns out it was way too much to fit into one episode so for our second anniversary we give you our very first two part episode. For Charlie's final birthday pick he stayed on the nostalgia path and picked a horror movie that he had a strong connection to....'Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight'. Growing up watching the TV series and Saturday morning cartoon as an early teen meant that when a full length feature film was announced that there was no way Charlie wasn't going to watch it. We also find out a shocking revelation from Nate concerning this movie as well! So hit that play button Boils and Ghouls to get transported back to when practical effects were king and Billy Zane was the smoothest, coolest horror movie villain of the 90s! Frights! Camera! Hacktion!!!!! HEHEHEHEHHAAAA!!!!!

It's that time of year again, Charlie's birthday has rolled back around and this year and he brought what is possibly the pinnacle of his childhood action movie favorites..... Masters of the Universe!!! While this podcast always has a foot in the nostalgia pool this episode the guys jump off the high dive into pure unadulterated wholesome nostalgia. Pete and Nate were definitely not surprised for the wave of love Charlie has for this live action adaptation of his hero He-Man. They were however caught a little off guard (as was Charlie) at how strong that wave actually is and how its still a cultural and personal icon for him. We even come up with our own He-man characters for each other and ourselves! So please take a trip to our past and enjoy as we cover Masters of the Universe.....Good Journey!!!!!

The gang is all here! For the first time ever the entire party was able to watch a movie together. A pact was made many months ago to cover Puppet Master 2 the next time we were altogether. Covid, random illnesses, and even Southwest wasn’t going to stop this from happening!.... Though some had succeeded in the past. It was bound to happen...this is it, our first Michael Bay movie. But dammit what better way to ring in the New Year than with Bad Boys 2 because it is a helluva ride. In fact we ride together.....we die together.... Bad Boys for life. Charlie and Nate wanted a fun sequel to continue their theme and thought what better one than the ultimate if not the best examples of a buddy cop actioner. So listen along as the guys strap in for an absolute wild ride with more car chases, explosions, bullets, and flat out hilarious dialogue than one movie has the right to have!! Nate wanted a doll for Christmas this year and Charlie and Pete pulled through for the little lad. Only problem was it was it has some defective hardware and went on a Homicidal rampage…again…Child’s Play is a franchise that is 7 movies and 2 seasons deep. It’s hard to believe Chucky has spawned so much over the years, but it’s the first sequel where he truly develops his personality and makes his mark on the horror world. Listen as the fellas talk about their fond memories of everyone’s favorite murderous doll!

It had to be done...after the Al Leong score Nate gave Die Hard 2 Charlie couldn't let that be our Christmas special legacy for the second year. Charlie had to do something drastic, something he never expected he'd have to do especially right before Christmas. What did he do you ask? Well...you'll have to listen to the episode to find out! After an amazing start to November with our RoboCop episode we decided to keep the action train chugging strong with this week's selection....Universal Soldier! The movie our generations will always remember as one of the greatest crossover events in the action genre with Jean Claude Van Damme sharing the spotlight with Dolph Lundgren. But something else became apparent while recording this episode, Charlie and Nate inadvertently had what appears to be a theme for the past month or so. This week Charlie decided to take the guys on a 90s nostalgia roller coaster ride straight from his teenage years. A movie neither Nate or Pete had ever heard of and was a bit nervous going into knowing Charlie's taste in movies. Little did they know Brainscan would end up being a perfect snapshot of life in the 90s which helped them understand Charlie's connection to this movie. The guys also took this episode as an opportunity to dive into their top 3 moments/memories from the 90s and just like a 90s show, there are some crossovers they each shared. It was supposed to be simple, Charlie picked an Ooey-Gooey movie this week...1988 The Blob. What should of been a nice calm simple review descended into chaos almost immediately and neither Nate or Charlie could do anything to stop it. Don't worry though by some miracle they were able to stay on task long enough to plunge their hands into quite possibly one of the greatest remakes to be made and highlight how this film has held up to the test of time. From dissolved body parts to the questionable wardrobe choices for our main man Kevin Dillion there was plenty to remanence about and even surprise Nate on his viewing. You ever just watch a movie with almost zero expectation and it ends up being exactly what you needed at that moment? Well that's what happened to Charlie and Nate for this weeks selection "Blind Fury" starring Rutger Hauer (first appearance on the show!). The guys had an absolute blast watching and then discussing this action/comedy classic, from the fantastic delivery by Hauer, to the best rouges gallery of henchmen even a special appearance by a martial art master, this movie delivers on all fronts. Listen along as both Nate and Charlie slowly descend into chaos at no fault of the movie at all, but were able to compose themselves enough to stay true to the movie. That's right! We had one more interview in the barrel that we wanted to drop in July before it ended and this is a big one for us. We got to sit down with Jim Ojala SFX extraordinaire who has an insane work resume...movies such as Hell Boy 2, X-men Last Stand, Toxic Avenger 4 as well as TV projects like True Blood and Angel. While we didn't have nearly enough time to even scratch the surface of his career we were able to dig into a few recent projects he's done such as his own movie Strange Nature and the soon to be released Crabs both of which are well worth your time...no spoilers of course. Nate is also able bring Jim's punk/metal side to the surface with a few projects he worked on that is sure to surprise many of our listeners as well...once Nate quit fangirling that is. Hey Everybody!!! We have been asked to help with an Indiegogo Campaign for a new independant horror movie called "Watch Dog" directed by none other than LC Holt (VHS2 and You're Next) with special effect done by friend of the show Deryk Wehrley (Late Check Out and He Knows). This episode we get a chance to sit down with these two and talk about how a project like this gets off the ground as well as a rundown of all the amazing perks that are available thru crowdfunding. Of course there are zero spoilers but we do get a glimpse of the premise and a feel of the films tone. Charlie and Nate had an absolute blast during this interview and are extremely grateful that we were asked to help bring exposure to this movie so early on into production. We did it everyone!!! Thanks to the poll we posted in the group it was unanimous that you the listeners wanted us to cover another John Travolta action classic! So to soften the blow to Nate this time Charlie selected the highly underrated and action packed John Woo helmed "Broken Arrow". The guys really dig deep into the action sequences and trust us there are quite a few that even we were scratching our heads as to how they pulled it off and just the sheer amount of destruction they were able to cram into movie that clocks in under 2 hours. Well it's been what feels like forever ago that we released an interview episode for everyone. This one is something very special and unique for the show as its an independant Action/Horror movie made by friend of the show Rob Davidson called "The Ultimate Throwdown"! We were put in touch with Rob by show supporters Bobby and James (Witch House) because they knew we'd be a good fit to help showcase the amazing amount of work being put into this project. Rob gives everyone an excellent look at the movie making process from an independant level as well as some behind the scenes of what are guaranteed to be some amazing stunts in the film. This episode is completely spoiler free as even we haven't seen it yet (just some amazing clips Rob shared with us beforehand)! Well the time has finally come, he's been grounded long enough from picking movies so this week is the 2nd "Pete's Pick"!!!! Pete took us literal when we said we're coming back to Earth after our space journey, so literal he pretty much took us subterranean with his choice "Slugs: The Movie". Listen in as we find out why he picked this particular film as well as if he's going to be able to stay ungrounded for the foreseeable future...the outcome of this episode will definitely surprise you! Well after a month long journey in Space there's nothing like a well deserved Vacation....Space Vacation that is!!! Nate and Charlie try to get some moon rays with a well deserved rest on their Space Cruise but as luck would have it their works not done just yet. The guys get tossed right in the middle of one of the greatest Sci-Fi adventure movies to date, "The Fifth Element" starring action great Bruce Willis and the ever mysterious Milla Jovovich. On this final leg of the "In Space" saga the guys try something a little different and use a review system aptly called S.P.A.C.E. developed by friend of the show J-Man...lets be honest, how could we not use it, we're in Space! So listen along and see just how accurate this rating system is compared to our gut feeling Al Leong segment as well as a surprising Body Count for a PG-13 movie. This week during our journey into space the guys receive a distress call from a group just floating around near Neptune. Imagine our surprise when we realized it was Pete's podcast group from "Good Beer Bad Movie Night" Troy, Kathleen, and Dave!!! Apparently we've kept Pete so occupied on our show that they decided to come looking for him and in doing so ran into this weeks movie selection.... Event Horizon. The next stop in our month long journey into space takes us to the red planet of Mars to visit a jailhouse in a small mining community in this weeks movie.... Ghosts of Mars. Charlie has been dying to cover this movie for a very long time and Nate has drug his feet long enough, the guys dive right into this John Carpenter hidden gem and man do they have fun dissecting it. From its amazing soundtrack, fantastic cast, and just pure mindless action this movie delivers on all fronts and deserves to be counted among Carpenters classics. For the next stop on our month long voyage into space we run into an Alien? species.... alien in the movie but to us he'll always be the Leprechaun! That's right Nates pick for the horror show is none other than Leprechaun 4 In Space, why...we have no idea...and neither did he. But the guys make the best of it and actually have a blast discussing the nonsensical yet charming entry into the franchise. Listen along as the guys think of other franchises that should be in space but aren't....yet, and how Hollywood needs to email us about our brilliant trilogy we've developed. The time has come for this show to boldly go where lets face it, every franchise goes.....IN SPACE!!!! That's right this weeks episode is the first of our month long journey into movies that take place in space for the majority of the film. And we kick things off a little unexpectedly with a movie Charlie didn't like at all when it first came out but over the years has become a personal favorite... "Lock Out" starring Guy Pearce. The guys also added a bit of a twist to this selection because they found the Unrated Blu-ray that neither Nate or Charlie had seen before. So strap in tight as you get launched into orbit to a Maximum Security prison and listen in as the guys go over their mission log of " Lock Out"!!!!

We have such sights to show you.....err...talk to you about? Doesn't have the same ring to it....oh well. This week the guys are going on a journey to HELL!!!! That's right Nate went right for the jugular when he suggested Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 and wow what a change of pace when compared to the other movies that've been covered so far. Follow along as Nate, Charlie, and Pete give you a brief history of the Hellraiser franchise and find out how the second entry stands against the others. Prepare your earholes for this weeks episode because we're about to melt them down just like Olé' Cropsey from this weeks movie....."The Burning". The guys are joined by a very special guest Nate made friends with over on the Instagram page, it's Mike Hochins lead singer of the Death Metal Band "Violent Homicidal Slasher" or "VHS" for short! Mikes band and songs are inspired by the older VHS style horror movies and when we asked him what movie he'd love to join us on The Burning was at the top of the list. So sit back and join Charlie, Nate, Pete, and Mike as they take a trip to summer camp circa 1981 while they discuss this mostly forgotten entry in Slasher movie history.

Wait!? It's not Tuesday!!! Nope but it is Friday the 13th, so that means we are dropping an episode dedicated to the man himself... Jason Voorhees! Nate wanted to do something extra special for the only Friday the 13th of the year and to ramp it up even more it is the anniversary of Part 7, that's right Jason vs Psychic as well as the debut of everyone's favorite man behind the mask.... Kane Hodder. So lets all gather for a party at Crystal Lake and crank up the episode as Nate and Charlie take you kill by kill in this very special " Friday the 13th" episode!!!!

This week Charlie and Nate get to dive back into a Steven Segal movie and not just any movie, his debut in "Above the Law"! Charlie was double prepared for this episode for some reason but lets be honest, you can never get enough Segal movies...or is it "that's enough movies Segal"? Either way the guys actually had a lot of fun re-watching this action classic even though it may not sound like it at times. Alright you gore-hounds...it's about to get messy! We've treaded lightly long enough, time to throw the gore lever and crank this sucker up to 11!!!!! That's right the guys have released the floodgates to bring you all of the ooey gooey you could possibly handle in this weeks movie selection Dead Alive aka Braindead! Nate and Charlie are once again joined by the 'Sultan of Goo' Pete from Good Beer Bad Movie Night while they take you thru the genius that is Peter Jackson and highlight damn near every bloody scene from beginning to end. It's safe to say the guys were all excited to watch this classic VHS era horror movie, find out exactly how much by listening to the latest from Give Me Back My Horror Movies....don't forget your raincoat!
