A Light on Cloud Infrastructure: How Marvell is Scaling AI with New Optical DSP
In this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast – Interview Series, we address the topic of cloud optics innovation and why it is critical to fulfilling the emerging demands in next generation AI/ML systems. Marvell's new Nova offering, a 1.6T PAM4 DSP optimized for high-performance fabrics in AI/ML environments, focuses on delivering breakthroughs in optical connectivity by enabling the highest speed of data movement in cloud AI/ML and data center networks. Powered by a groundbreaking 200 Gbps/lambda optical DSP, Nova doubles the optical bandwidth of current solutions to enable 1.6 Tbps pluggable modules for scaling AI clusters. Nova extends the multi-source pluggable optics ecosystem and provides the advanced technology needed to alleviate data center network bottlenecks as the industry transitions to 51.2 Tbps networking architectures. Host Ron Westfall welcomes Nigel Alvares, VP of Global Marketing and Business Planning at Marvell Technologies, a top-tier semiconductor company. Nigel is a returning guest on this show, and astutely shares his insights and perspective on the direction of the cloud optics market segment and its vital role across AI/ML and data center environments. To start their discussion, they focused on the Nova PAM4 DSP product and how the PAM4 DSPs sit inside of an optical module that plugs into the back of a switch. Nigel demonstrated how one works and deftly explained they essentially transfer data from the switch to optical modules so that data can be moved anywhere in the world. Today, Marvell's Nova product is ready to meet the bandwidth boom clouds are facing as data traffic is forecasted to grow at over 40% per year. Notably, it's growing even faster inside the data center, where PAM4s are mostly used. Some estimate that East-West traffic between racks in data centers is now 70% of traffic. As a result, clouds are investing heavily in switched and optical interconnects powered by DSPs such as Nova. Their conversation drilled down on the following key topics: What kind of impact will the Marvell Nova solution have on AI, especially in handling and scaling the required cloud workloads. Why Nova is the first chip with 200G per lambda or wavelength and how Marvell accomplished this breakthrough. The benefits Nova can deliver such as the doubling of data capacity, getting the same amount of bandwidth with half the equipment, and saving valuable real estate in data centers. We examined the latest developments in co-packaged silicon and direct drive designs including their pros and cons. Using linear direct (LD) or co-packaged optics (CPO) approaches comes down to customer preferences, although it can be two more years before they become mainstream. An assessment of active electrical cable (AEC) technology and how they can help enable server to server bandwidth can start to double every few years akin to rack interconnects as well as optical arriving inside servers due to PAM4 commodifying optical bandwidth. Why modules have a long life ahead of them, especially throughout AI clusters, and how Marvell's 3nm innovations play a key role.

5G Factor: Dishing about Slowing 5G Spending, Spectrum Auctions and the Politics Getting in the Way, and Qvantel BSS Availability on AWS
In this episode of The 5G Factor, Shelly Kramer and fellow analyst Ron Westfall took a look at the recent developments in the 5G ecosystem that we think you might want to know about. Their conversation covered: News that Dish plans on slowing its spending on 5G, at least for a bit. What's the rationale here? Speaking of Dish, the company has filed a petition with the FCC hoping to block T-Mobile's purchase of 600MHz spectrum – what's that all about? And speaking of spectrum, are politics getting in the way of unleashing 5G innovation, especially in rural and other underserved areas? Maybe. And they closed the show talking about Qvantel Flexx BSS, a cloud-native SaaS based BSS, which comes with pre-built out of the box use cases designed for quick deployments that will allow telcos to develop, manage, and monetize new services now available on AWS. CSPs should like this.

The Future of Warehouses is Dark and Integrated
In this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast host Shelly Kramer is joined by George Koutsaftes, President and CEO of Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions for a conversation about the future of warehouses. George joined me from ProMat, one of the biggest manufacturing and supply chain tradeshows, which took place in Chicago last week, and in addition to talking about the future of dark warehouses, he also shared insights on some of the key trends he's observed there. We live in an increasingly digital economy, which includes a massive web of packaging, shipping, warehousing, and distribution designed systems to help meet customer needs. In fact, without this physical infrastructure, the digital economy would grind to a sudden halt. Over the course of the last few years and in order to combat labor shortages and deal with increased e-commerce demand, many companies have moved quickly to add automation and robotics to warehouse operations. In fact, it's not at all surprising that the global market for warehouse automation technology is anticipated to reach $21.7 billion this year, which could lead to dark warehouses — which is a very good thing. Their conversation covered the following: * What a dark warehouse is, and what that looks like in practice. * There's been a significant investment in new warehouses, both physical buildings and the technology within them. They discussed the driving forces behind that and how dark warehouses can alleviate the challenge. * They explored the Interoperability Gap and why it's such a major challenge for the industry. * They discussed some of Honeywell's extended capabilities designed to address the Interoperability Gap and how those are being received in the market. * They talked about customer challenges throughout the industry and the key challenges George and his team at Honeywell seek to address. It was a great conversation and it's clear that addressing warehouse automation is on the minds of many throughout the industry, and with good reason.

New Research on the B2B Digital Buyers' Journey and the Forces Shaping the Future of Enterprise Procurement
In this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast, host Shelly Kramer is joined by Carsten Storm, Head of Marketplace for the SAP Digital Experiences team for a conversation around our latest report: 2022 B2B Digital Buyers' Journey: Forces Shaping the Future of Enterprise Procurement, done in partnership with SAP. In 2019, our team at Futurum Research collaborated with SAP to understand the trends, practices, and challenges in relation to the digital buying of enterprise software solutions. That first edition of the report offered an inside look at the shift that was happening within procurement. But then, our world underwent a cataclysmic shift. Last fall, we again partnered with SAP to understand the forces that have shaped both the demand for and the process of enterprise software procurement. So, what do procurement officers and businesses need to know? What did we learn in the report? That's exactly what Carsten and Shelly discussed in this episode. Their conversation covered the following: The business world has undergone immense changes in the last few years, and we kicked off the show by discussing how this has impacted purchasing. Our research showed that a whopping 89% of B2B organizations reported changing their business models during the past two years — and we discussed what these changes look like. Our research also showed that 78% of respondents reported looking for ways to streamline the procurement process, while 27% say their current process never or only occasionally operates as efficiently as it did in the past. We explored why streamlining procurement is important and the challenges organizations face in that undertaking. We talked about the fact that how we shop, and our shopping preferences — both as consumers and as B2B buyers — has changed, how these changes impact how we do business, and how that has spurred a rise in consumer marketplaces. We explored what enterprise organizations are doing to adapt to a change in procurement practices and what their challenges are as it relates to software procurement. We know that the future of procurement is digital, and our conversation explored what our research showed that organizations want from their procurement processes. B2B procurement pros are very clear: they want to purchase primarily online, through a vendor's site or a digital marketplace, they want a one-stop shop where possible, featuring multiple vendors, and almost 20% today expect to purchase at least half of their enterprise software through a digital marketplace. Given these very clear preferences from B2B buyers, how can enterprise organizations thrive in today's marketplace and serve those buyers' needs efficiently and effectively? To get the answers to that question, you'll need to tune in and hear what Carsten has to say.
