Episode #58: Fast Fix Friday on Disrupting Yourself

In this episode of Fast Fix Friday, I talk why you should disrupt yourself. I had the pleasure of interviewing Whitney Johnson, author of Disrupt Yourself, and formerly co-founder of Rose Park Advisors alongside Clayton Christensen, way back when in episode #13 of Future Squared. She told the story of her own personal reinvention from secretary on Wall Street to high ranking equities analyst to co-founder of a boutique investment firm which invested in and led the $8 million seed round for Korea’s Coupang, currently valued at US$5+ billion. It got me thinking about my own story of personal disruption, and just how important personal reinvention is in today's increasingly uncertain environment where the exponential growth in technology is underpinning the disruption of not just industries, not just companies, but perhaps most importantly, people. Find out how to go about disrupting yourself and my personal journey of self-disruption.   Show Notes: DisruptYourselfBook.com     --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #57: My Lean Startup Journey *midweek bonus*

This mid-week bonus is a little different! After over 50 episodes, mostly of me interviewing other people, in this episode, the tables are turned. I recently had the pleasure of appearing on Ray Milidoni’s Razor Sharp show which was a lot of fun. Ray poked and probed about a number of topics such as how to get started in business, how to get the most out of every day, how to build, measure and learn using the lean startup, we also got talking about Lemonade Stand, the children’s entrepreneurship program I co-founded and why teaching children entrepreneurial thinking is so important, we talk about the entrepreneur’s mindset and above all else, we have a LOT of fun, and I’m sure you’ll gather as much by listening to this episode.   Show Notes: - RazorSharpShow.com - Sprint by Jake Knapp - The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People By Stephen Covey - The Startup Owner’s Manual by Steve Blank - Traction By Gabriel Weinberg - The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton Christensen - All Marketers Tell Stories by Seth Godin - Blue Ocean Strategy by Chan Kim - SupaHands: www.supahands.com/   --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #53: From Theatre to Disruption with Sportsbet's Head of Innovation, Leslie Barry

Leslie Barry is currently the head of innovation at Sportsbet, Australia’s largest online bookmaker with $117M operating profit / 79.4 million pounds in 2015. He was previously the head of innovation at Thoughtworks Australia, was the General Manager of Professional Services at Dimension Data Australia and has also founded several companies including Exertack, a health and fitness tracking business acquired by Techstars alumni Gyminee in 2008 and GetViable, an an online innovation platform sold to Hong Kong-based BigColors in 2011. He is an advisor to several startups including Scanned, CrowdsourceHire, he mentors this year’s intake at the Slingshot startup accelerator and also maintains a personal journal of his innovation journey at InsideInnovation.co. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with hundreds of innovation managers across a range of companies and speak with countless thought leaders on the topic, and Leslie is one guy who just gets it. To put it simply, Leslie avoids innovation theatre at all costs and has very little appetite for bullshit. In his brief time at Sportsbet he has already had a profound impact on the way the company approaches innovation, culminating recently with the ideation, design,  development and release of a product in just 12 weeks - unheard of in the company previously. What makes it all the more impressive is that in 2015 Sportsbet’s revenues grew by 54% so navigating internal politics, when things are rosy and stakeholders might see little reason, on the surface, to change the way they do things. As you will all know if you’ve listened to this show before, I am a massive advocate for the benefits of health and fitness, of both body and mind, on productivity, and we’ll also dive into Leslie’s approach to staying on top of his game.   Topics Discussed: - AI and the threat of human extinction - Why an organisation like Sportsbet needs to innovate - How to get buy-in from senior stakeholders and IT - How to avoid innovation theatre - Why Leslie says he won't have a job at Sportsbet in 2 years - How to effectively partner with startups - Leslie's 'fail button' - What excites Leslie about the next ten years in tech   Show Notes: Leslie's Twitter - @lesliecbarry Leslie's Blog - InsideInnovation.co Leslie's Linkedin - www.linkedin.com/in/lesliebarry Sportsbet's e-sports experiment - respawn.sportsbet.com.au   --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #52: Fast Fix Friday on 50 Lessons from 50 Episodes! Thank You Everybody!

‍Thank you listeners, we've just turned 50...episodes that is, and to celebrate, I've put together a list of the 50 most memorable lessons from the first 50 episodes! Oftentimes, we read books and blogs, we listen to podcasts and audiobooks, we watch keynotes and take part in workshops, we umm and ahh, but despite all of the investment in consuming this knowledge, we rarely take the time to reflect and truly digest the knowledge so that we can become better at applying these insights. Taking time out to reflect on what you’ve just consumed and perhaps scribble some notes down is kind of like eating the right thing after a workout to maximise your results - it’s an incredibly powerful tool when it comes to retention and application of key insights. Over the past six months I’ve been fortunate enough to interview a number of thought leaders on the topic of corporate innovation, entrepreneurship and self improvement, culminating with episode 50. To celebrate this milestone, I took some time out to reflect on some of the best lessons from my podcasting journey and have prepared a list of the 50 most memorable lessons, as the ones that stick with you are usually the best. You can download the entire list at collectivecamp.us/blog/50lessons Why? Episode #51: Agile Government Starts With You *midweek keynote special*

Collective Campus recently hosted an event called Disrupt the Public Sector, as part of the Australian Government’s Innovation Month 2016. The event saw over 100 public servants making their way to pack our event space in Melbourne’s CBD - they heard from a number of thought leaders talk innovation in Government - why it’s important, what it looks like, what the barriers are and how we might navigate these barriers. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to speak on the topic of an Agile Government and how transforming the way government thinks and moves begins with being more self-aware and ownership of our daily actions, both great and small. I touched on a number of topics in this talk such as bottom-up innovation including various examples of how employees are driving change and how to get buy-in from the top in Government. So this episode is a little bit different - the audio quality might not be as great as our usual episodes, as this was recorded live before an audience, but having received lots of positive feedback post the talk, I thought that sharing it with listeners of Future Squared would provide a lot of value. Even if you don’t work for Government, the concepts I discussed in this talk are just as relevant in a large enterprise as they in many startups. By now you’ll know I’m a big fan of experimentation, so consider this episode an experiment of sorts, reliant on you the listener to validate or invalidate the assumption that people want to hear this kind of content! if you’d like to hear more of these midweek specials, then I’d love to hear from you - you can email me at [email protected] or hit me up on twitter @steveglaveski Listen on iTunes: goo.gl/sMnEa0 Listen on Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/future GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack   Hosted on Acast. (He lived in Australia and New Zealand for several years, and still cannot surf.) He is the co-author of The Age of Discovery - Navigating the Risks and Rewards of Our Reneissance, which shows how we can draw courage and wisdom from the last Renaissance in order to fashion our own golden age out of this New Renaissance. Whether we’re seized by Gutenberg or Zuckerberg; the discovery of the Americas or the rise of China; copperplate or silicon etching; —a Renaissance moment, we’re told, then and now, forces humanity to give its best just when the stakes are highest. Age of Discovery navigates the crises of our time and helps us all define a legacy that the world will still celebrate half a millennium from now.   Topics Discussed: - Will artificial intelligence liberate us or destroy us? - What is the role of Government in a rapidly changing technological and economic landscape? - What happens when the world’s concentration of wealth becomes centralized in one place such as Silicon Valley? - What the implications of an increasingly connected world are? - What Brexit and the rise of Donald Trump really mean? - What we, as a people, need to do to ensure our longevity as a species? - Does policy need to be re-written to adapt to these changing times? - Are we facing a productivity paradox whereby the next generation will need to suffer and adjust to changes in order for subsequent generations to reap the rewards?   Show Notes: Chris' Twitter - @chriskutarna Chris' LinkedIn - uk.linkedin.com/in/moniker Ian Goldin's Twitter - @ian_goldin Get the book - https://amzn.to/2zmWdWg   --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #40: Fast Fix Friday on Lean Marketing

It’s no longer enough to shout marketing slogans from the rooftops and expect people to buy your products. Today’s customers are smarter than ever thanks to the transparency and power that has come with the internet.  The world is moving faster than ever thanks to the emergence of disruptive technologies and businesses are facing increasing volatility and uncertainty. As such, marketing campaigns need to truly speak to customer desires and be adaptable enough to move in step with the changing landscape and buyer behaviours. Traditional, long-term, above the line marketing campaigns are now mostly the domain of few industry behemoths - the rest of us need to be a little more targeted and intentional with our marketing but with so many potential marketing channels to choose from, where does one even begin? The lean startup is a method popularised by Eric Ries’ book of the same name and is widely used by startups and more recently, large companies, to quickly test market appetite for new products by using low fidelity prototypes to rapidly experiment and validate or invalidate key assumptions underpinning a business idea. “Speed is fundamental to success” says Ries. Fortunately, this approach can be adopted for marketing campaigns too. In this episode I talk through 8 steps detailing how to pull off your own lean marketing strategy to find new customers for new products.   Show Notes: www.collectivecamp.us   --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #38: Fast Fix Friday on the Corporate Innovation Hierarchy of Needs

Most of us are familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The theory on psychological health is now almost 70 years old, but rings as true today as it did when it first emerged in 1943. It is even more pronounced today with the emergence of millennials in the west who tend to chase purpose rather than just profit, in stark contrast to prior generations, a testament to having already met their other needs. One could draw parallels between this hierarchy and the hierarchy of needs when it comes to innovation within a large company. In this FFF, I dig a little deeper into what I’ll dub the Hierarchy of Needs for Corporate Innovation.   Show Notes: Sign up to my Blockchain for Bankers class - tinyurl.com/zan3ngm Find out more about Lemonade Stand - lemonadestand.rocks --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #17: Stop Treating Corporate Innovation Like a Project

In episode #17, I confront an issue that seems all too common amongst large organisations trying to deal with this thing called disruption. Far too often, the response is isolated initiatives or projects, with defined start and end dates, that don't have clearly defined objectives, aren't embedded into the broader organisational BUs, don't tie in with performance metrics, make little funding or resources available to explore ideas beyond an initiative and ultimately amount to nothing more than theatre with no tangible long-term value. I talk what organisations are doing wrong and what they need to be thinking about if they are serious about innovation and keeping disruption at bay. Episode #15: How to Increase Productivity by 500% and Boost Innovation

Flow has been defined as a mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus. The term was first coined by Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in 1975 and is often referred to as as ‘the zone’, however few people truly appreciate that ‘the zone’ is actually a physiological state. Why did I choose to write about a topic that may at first glance seem to have more to do with psychology and physiological science than business innovation? The answer is simple. A 10-year McKinsey and Co. study on flow and productivity found top executives 500% more productive when in flow. Interested in finding out more? Give this podcast a listen! Steve Blank is considered by many to be the godfather of Silicon Valley and is credited with spearheading the customer development model which birthed the lean startup, popularised by his former pupil Eric Ries' book of the same name. He is one of the most prominent and widely respected thought leaders in the world on innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the last 35 years, Steve has been part of, or co-founded eight Silicon Valley startups. These have run the gamut from semiconductors, video games, personal computers, and supercomputers. (MIPS, Zilog, Rocket Science, SuperMac, Convergent Technologies, Ardent, ESL) Steve's last company was E.piphany, an enterprise software company. Steve currently teaches entrepreneurship at U.C. Berkeley-Haas Business School, Columbia University, NYU, Stanford University Engineering School and UCSF. In 2009 he was awarded the Stanford University Undergraduate Teaching Award in the department of Management Science and Engineering. In 2011 the National Science Foundation adopted his Lean Launchpad class as the U.S. standard for commercializing basic and applied research via the Innovation Corps.   Topics Discussed: - the corporate innovation outpost - the evolution of corporate R&D - getting to "yes" for corporate innovation - why entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are not the same - why horizon 1 systems don't support horizon 3 innovation - why horizon 3 or disruptive innovation requires a little bit of crazy - innovation in the public sector - how important it is to get the culture right - acquisitions and innovation - if he could work for any company in the world at any stage of their lifecycle, which would it be and why   There were definitely some nerves in the lead up to this interview given that Steve is somebody who I have the upmost admiration for in the space of innovation and entrepreneurship and some of those nerves might have shone through during moments in this podcast so feel free to have a laugh at my expense! :)     Show Notes: - SteveBlank.com - Four Steps to the Epiphany (book): https://amzn.to/2zoUH6e - The Startup Owner's Manual (book): https://amzn.to/2MSAfOt - Twitter: @sgblank --- I hope you enjoyed this episode.
