Episode #162: Are you really happy at work? Six key factors to consider.
Mark Twain famously said that “whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, stop and reflect”. It’s easy for us to get sucked into the matrix and grind out work, day after day, and look around at our colleagues all doing the same thing and assume that ‘this is the way it’s supposed to be’ without really ever taking the time to reflect on what we really want and whether or not we’re truly happy and fulfilled in our work. Every few months I perform a sanity check to assess whether or not I need to make any changes to the kind of work I’m doing or how I’m doing it, and I’ve found the following six Fs serve as a helpful guide. --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #161: Kevin Kelly on the Inevitable
Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. He co-founded Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor for its first seven years. He is also founding editor and co-publisher of the popular Cool Tools website, which has been reviewing tools daily since 2003. From 1984-1990 Kelly was publisher and editor of the Whole Earth Review, a journal of unorthodox technical news. He co-founded the ongoing Hackers’ Conference, and was involved with the launch of the WELL, a pioneering online service started in 1985. His books include the best-selling New Rules for the New Economy, the classic book on decentralized emergent systems, Out of Control, a graphic novel about robots and angels, The Silver Cord, an oversize catalog of the best of Cool Tools, and his summary theory of technology in What Technology Wants (2010). His new book is The Inevitable - Understanding the 12 Technological Forces that will Shape Our Future, which is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. This was a fascinating conversation with one of the most influential names in technology, entrepreneurship, digital media and future thinking. Expect to learn a number of things throughout the podcast but specifically Kevin and I cover: Whether humanity will find new things to do or simply live an unfulfilling existence once most of today’s jobs are automated or made redundant What large companies can do to prepare for what Kevin Kelly refers to as The Inevitable What we should do to combat online recommendation systems that serve to harden our minds to particular tastes or beliefs All topics discussed: Kevin’s travels to Uzbekistan and his views on the national dish How Kevin landed on 12 technological forces that will shape our inevitable future Why there’s never been a better time to start a business Why we all be endless newbies going forward, regardless of age or experience The number one skill people need to learn to succeed in the future Will humanity find new things to do once we automate most of what we already do? Why trying to ban the inevitable (and companies like UBER or Airbnb) backfires Will we have jobs in the future? Just yesterday, one of Australia’s long running broadcast networks, TEN, went into voluntary administration after reporting a $232 million loss - another sobering reminder that the once mighty will fall unless they begin to not only challenge but replace their existing business models. Companies are scrambling to stay relevant - or at least look like they’re trying to stay relevant - amidst a storm of growing uncertainty and unpredictabilty. The hard truth of the matter is that there are no silver bullets when it comes to corporate innovation. Episode #144: 13 Must Haves BEFORE You Run a Corporate Hackathon or Innovation Bootcamp
In an era where every large company is under pressure to innovate, or at least show that they’re being innovative, it can be all too tempting to take an old meeting room, turn it into an ‘innovation lab’ by throwing some bean-bags around the place and setting up a fussball table and running a hackathon. Oftentimes though, these hackathons amount to little more than team-bonding activities, with little focus on identifying and validating problems and solutions that are worthy of subsequent exploration. In order to get the most out of a corporate hackathon and generate some quick wins that organisers and innovation champions will be able to use to build a case for subsequent initiatives and further development of ideas, taking the time to consider and prepare the following 13 things can make a world of difference. --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #140: How to Identify Synergies between Corporates and Startups
It’s been well documented by the likes of Steve Blank and Clayton Christensen that if you want explore disruptive innovation in a large company, you have to redesign or create parallel processes, systems and values internally in order up to support behaviours critical to innovation - think moving fast and experimentation. Failing that, take innovation outside of the building by spinning out a company with its own processes, systems and values. But the kicker here is to not treat the spin off as an independent startup, otherwise you might be better off simply setting up a corporate venture capital arm to invest in startups. A better approach is to leverage your relative strengths to mutual benefit. A large corporate will bring domain expertise, networks, distribution channels, customers and resources to the table. Listen to hear how to identify synergies to accelerate growth. Episode #134: Design Thinking is Never Enough
I’d like to take a quick moment to share that I will be taking part in the CEO Sleepout this June to raise awareness of and funds for the homeless. I’m trying to raise $5,000 and if you can spare just $5, I’d love your support. You can donate at bit.ly/sleepoutsteve - every dollar counts. In other news, Collective Campus has just announced a mixed reality startup accelerator in partnership with Microsoft. We will be on the hunt for startups playing in the space of virtual and augmented reality so if you think your organisation could benefit from being involved, we are on the lookout for a one or two partners to come on board so just head to corporateaccelerator.cc to express your interest. A couple of days ago I posted an article called Why Design Thinking is Never Enough in HBR’s Linkedin group and it’s already pushing over 400 likes so clearly it resonates with people so I thought I’d repurpose it for the listeners of Future Squared. --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #131: Book Launch - Day 5 of 5...and a final word on 10X mindsets!
We've made it to the end of the 5 day book free promo and what a journey it's been! The objective of any author who runs a free ebook promo on Amazon is to promote the hell out of it and get their book to #1 in its sub-genres to increase exposure and awareness. I managed to get the book to #1 in all of my target sub-genres within 2 hours of the promo kicking off - including entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, management and startups (it's still #1 in these categories as of writing) ...it got to as high as #3 in the overall business category! This was all thanks to an elaborate growth hacking exercise that I will share with you in coming days. But before I wrap up with the book promo, I just wanted to share some words on mindset...or rather, what former Future Squared guest, Peter Diamandis calls a 10X mindset. We're all trained to think incrementally. To think in terms of 10% growth and to subscribe to platitudes like "Rome wasn't built in a day" and "one step at a time" and in the words of the great Zig Ziglar, anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can do it well. However, what we define as anything worth doing either puts us on a course to 10% better or a course to 10X better. So many people I know set instil limitations based on false beliefs. I often hear people say things like: "I can't start my own consulting firm until I've worked my way up at a large firm, made partner and built enough relationships and credibility - then I'll be ready" "I'd love to write a book but I don't know where to start. I'll need to get professional coaching and I'll need to find a reputable publisher...then I'll write one." "I'd love to start a podcast but I need to invest in a proper recording studio, research, a marketing team and scriptwriters....then I'll be ready." "I want to get A, B and C right before I do D - then I'll be ready." In all of these cases what usually happens is...nothing. We stack the bricks up so high that the walls look too imposing so we don't even bother. In the past year with the help of my team, I've released two books, a podcast that has been in the business chart on iTunes since its release over 14 months ago and doubled the size of my boutique consulting business and recently expanding to Singapore. Is this because I am smarter or more talented than your average person? Definitely not. It comes back to mindset and what I like to call the 4 P's. Proactivity. Persistence. Passion. Purpose. It's asking questions like "how can I get a book to #1 on Amazon?" and then building a strategy to get there. And with two self published books under my belt, I do plan on taking the publisher route next time and 10Xing my author efforts, but it won't seem like such an imposing thing to do...and finding a decent publisher, with the success of my current book behind me, should prove to be much easier. So if you're listening to this - what are your self-limiting beliefs? Where are you wired to think about growing by 10% instead of growing by 1,000%? What questions are you not asking - the answers of which could take you from A to Z in the same time that you normally go from A to B? --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #123: 10 Ways to Balance Innovation with Business Objectives
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Lawrence Levy, former CFO of Pixar Animation Studios. Levy worked closely with Jobs and the Pixar team to design and implement a roadmap that transformed what was a sleepy graphics art studio into one of Hollywood’s greatest success stories, having since generated lifetime box office revenues of US$10.8B. One thing that most large organisations struggle with is how to balance creativity and innovation with financial objectives and external stakeholders...something that is at the core of what Pixar does. So what I’ve done in today’s episode of Fast Fix Friday is distilled 10 key takeaways on how to build a culture that plays both sides of this coin. --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #122: Take Company Culture to Infinity and Beyond with former Pixar CFO, Lawrence Levy
Lawrence Levy was the CFO of Pixar Animation Studios from 1994 through to 2001, so in Pixar terms, from Toy Story to Monsters Inc but maintained a Board role until the smash hit Cars in 2006. Lawrence recently penned To Pixar and Beyond: My Unlikely Journey with Steve Jobs to Make Entertainment History, which was an Amazon Best Book of 2016 in Business & Leadership category. The book chronicles how Steve Jobs called Lawrence out of the blue and persuaded him to join Pixar and turnaround a company that was on the verge of failure. Levy worked closely with Jobs and the Pixar team and implemented a roadmap that transformed the sleepy graphics art studio into one of Hollywood’s greatest success stories. Episode #121: Ask for Forgiveness, not Permission.
This one is for all of the corporate innovators our there, all of the entrepreneurial thinkers and status quo challengers working for a large company. You might feel a little bit suffocated or restrained by your companies processes...you might often see your ideas get shot down by middle or senior management, you’re probably asked to completed a 50 page business case simply to test an idea that requires only a few hundred dollars and access to some customers, everything you suggest might require a meeting with key stakeholders who take weeks or months to get around a table and any decisions ultimately require the review and approval of higher ups. It’s no wonder that innovating in a large company can be hard.I’ve been there, I know what it’s like. So what can you do if you find yourself up against a brick wall whenever you've got an idea to share? Episode #116: The $100 MBA with Omar Zenhom
Omar Zenhom attended Wharton business school and dropped out in frustration to build The $100 MBA. Previously an educator & university manager for 13 years, the $100MBA organisation is on a mission to revolutionise business education. Omar is also hosts the podcast of the same name which now boasts well over 800 episodes and previously won the Best of iTunes award! He is also co-founder of Webinar Ninja which he has scaled from zero to over $2.6m a year (as of mid-2016, I elude to this probably being much more today during the show) without raising a single dollar of funding, which I think a lot of startups can learn a huge lesson from. Topics Covered: - Omar’s love for 80’s music - Is a traditional MBA worth it or is it just a time machine? - Drawing on Omar's 13 years in academia and the challenges facing today's fundamentally broken education system - How talent and great ideas don't come close to guaranteeing success in entrepreneurship and how it's all about implementation and resilience - How to dig yourself out of rough patches and what entrepreneurs call the 'trough of despair' - The importance of having a supportive partner and wider circle of influence - Whether immigrants and their children make great entrepreneurs - The $100MBA and Webinar Ninja - Omar's Podcast - Building a startup without sourcing funding and how funding can be both a blessing at times, but more often than not for early stage entrepreneurs, a curse - Why it's important to get a taste for every job in your company before outsourcing or delegating it Show Notes: 1) The $100 MBA website - 100mba.net 2) The $100 MBA podcast - 100mba.net/show 3) Webinar Ninja - webinarninja.co 4) Omar on Twitter: twitter.com/theomarzenhom --- Join the conversation on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/where you can discuss episodes, request guests, propose questions for forthcoming guests and access exclusive content and special offers! Episode #115: Identify your Blind Spots
Listen on iTunes: goo.gl/sMnEa0 Listen on Stitcher: goo.gl/OqEVCy Feedback… when was the last time you asked of objective, honest and critical feedback? I’m not just talking about those mandated and ineffective annual performance reviews, I’m talking about ongoing feedback from not just people above you in the food chain, but your peers and people who report to you. The human brain can only consciously process something like 120 bits of information, yet at any given moment we are surrounded by several million bits of information which we can only ever process subconsciously. As such, our perceptions of the world are shaped by how we choose to see them, and often, our perceptions of ourselves too. In this episode of Fast Fix Friday, I talk feedback, and why you should be getting it often. Episode #113: How Government Can Better Support Startups
Listen on iTunes: goo.gl/sMnEa0 Listen on Stitcher: goo.gl/OqEVCy When I say entrepreneurship in 2017, what comes to mind? Emerging technologies, youthful exuberance, risk taking and social media platforms perhaps. Government rarely comes to mind. However, if it wasn’t for the US Government then you mightn’t be connecting with people via Facebook, searching for information via Google or read articles like this on your Apple iPad. In this episode, I explore what's currently broken when it comes to Government startup engagement and some key things it could be doing to facilitate innovation instead of just regulate it.
