The Four Seasons are one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. Led by Frankie Valli, their lead singer with the distinctive falsetto voice, they had dozens of hits beginning in the early 1960s including “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Can’t Take Me Eyes Off Of You”, “Dawn (Go Away)”, “Rag Doll”, “Working My Way Back To You” and many more. My guests in this episode all had important roles with The Four Season. L. Russell Brown wrote their hit song “C’mon Marianne”. Lee Shapiro was their longtime Keyboard player and the arranger for their hits “December 1963: Oh What A Night” and “Who Loves You”. Robby Robinson is the band’s current Keyboard player and Musical Director for the last 46 years. And John Paiva was the band’s guitarist from 1973-78. Mark Egan is an acclaimed electric bassist. He’s played on countless jazz and pop albums as well as movie and television soundtracks. He was a member of the Pat Metheny Group and then formed the band Elements with drummer Danny Gottlieb. He played with Gil Evans for 13 years. He’s recorded with a Who’s Who including Sting, Roger Daltrey, Judy Collins, Cyndi Lauper, Art Garfunkel, Gato Barbieri and Larry Coryell. And he has 14 albums as a leader to his credit. Jeremy Swift shot to worldwide fame as Leslie Higgins - the Communications Director for the AFC Richmond football club - in the hit series “Ted Lasso”. He was nominated for an Emmy Award. This episode is the WORLD PREMIERE of “Lou’s Blues”, my new single. As I've mentioned several times on the podcast, I came of age musically during the British Invasion era of the 1960s, and then I segued into the Jazz Fusion era of the 1970s. That era was dominated by incredible bands like Weather Report, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My band, Sagov, was a part of that scene.What I loved about jazz fusion era was how it combined the power of rock with the sophistication and improvisation of jazz. “Lou’s Blues” is inspired by that era. I call it a tone poem. It’s a musical journey. Rod Argent is the superb keyboard player in The Zombies, one of the greatest bands of the British Invasion era of the 1960s. They had massive hits with “She’s Not There”, “Tell Her No” and “Time Of The Season” - all written by Rod - and they had a sound and a sophistication that was unlike any other band at that time. Lee Shapiro was the longtime keyboardist and musical director for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one of the greatest vocal groups of the rock era. He arranged two of their biggest hits, “December 1963: Oh What A Night” and “Who Loves You”. He went on to have a career doing jingles for Budweiser, Coke and others. He created the Rock ‘n Roll Elmo doll for Fisher-Price, which sold 4 million units. He collaborated with Barry Manilow on “Copacabana, The Musical”. My Co-host is Gary Puckett, ‘60s Superstar with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, as we interview another music Superstar, Jerome Gourdine, better known as Little Anthony of Little Anthony and the Imperials. Little Anthony and the Imperials was one of the few artists who bridged the doo wop era of the 1950s and the rock era of the 1960s. They had one hit after another with “Tears On My Pillow” (1958), “Shimmy Shimmy KO KO Bop” (1960), “Goin’ Out Of My Head” and “I’m On The Outside Looking In” (1964) and “Hurt So Bad” (1965). Their songs have been covered by so many artists. They appeared twice on the Ed Sullivan Show and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.In honor of my co-host the featured song in this episode is “Young Girl”, which was a #1 hit for Gary. Bert Berns and Nat Weiss are two giants of the music industry, yet both relatively unknown to the public. Bert Berns was one of the foremost songwriters and producers of pop and rhythm and blues in the ‘60s. His hits include “Twist And Shout”, which The Beatles took to international fame, “Piece Of My Heart”, Janis Joplin’s gigantic hit, “Hang On Sloopy”, the mega-hit for The McCoys, “Cry To Me”, a hit for Solomon Burke and later for The Rolling Stones, and “Tell Him”, a great early ‘60s song for the Exciters. His producer credits include “Brown Eyed Girl”, Van Morrison’s first smash hit, "Under The Boardwalk" by The Drifters, and "Cherry Cherry" by Neil Diamond. Nat Weiss was a lawyer by training. He became the U.S. business partner of Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles, and was Brian’s right hand man for the band in America, including sorting out all the merchandising opportunities coming their way. Nat parlayed this relationship into one where he would suggest artists for Brian to manage, including The Cyrkle. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most iconic figures in all of rock music and was a hero to Robert and millions of people. So when Robert recorded his debut album "Miles Behind" in 1994 he decided to include a cover of one of Jimi’s songs. He chose to reimagine a “psychedelic jazz” version of Hendrix’s classic “Fire”. It features Al Foster from Miles Davis’ band on drums plus the amazing Ada Dyer on vocals. Twenty five years later, with his band, Project Grand Slam, Robert decided to re-record “Fire” but in a different style. This new, reimagined version of the song became the band’s closing number in concert. This episode features a bit of both versions of “Fire” - the studio version from 1994, and a “live” concert version from 2018 from the “It’s Alive!” album, featuring the wonderful Ziarra Washington on vocals. Al Kooper is a true Superstar of rock music. He was a member of The Blues Project. He founded Blood Sweat & Tears. He recorded Super Session with Michael Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. He played the iconic organ part on Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone”. He played the memorable french horn introduction and piano on the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. He discovered and produced Lynyrd Skynrd. He co-wrote “This Diamond Ring”, the #1 hit for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. And he was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
