He worked with Phil Spector, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt with the Stone Poneys, Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra and so many more. Tommy Roe has been called the Father of Bubblegum rock. In the 1960s he had 27 Top 100 hits including 6 in the Top 10, with “Sheila” and “Dizzy” reaching #1. Jeremy Clyde was half of the iconic ‘60s duo Chad & Jeremy. They had several big hits during the British Invasion era of the 1960s including “Yesterday’s Gone” and “A Summer Song”. They made guest appearances on the Dick Van Dyke Show, the Patty Duke Show and Batman. Jeremy became a film and stage actor and has appeared in several Broadway productions. The theme of this Music Day episode is Singles.Back in the day - before albums took over - the record business was all about singles. An individual track put out as a 45 RPM record, the kind with the big hole in the middle for the turntable. There was always an A side and a B side to each single. The A side was the featured song. But sometimes a radio disc jockey or the public fell in love with the B side - and that was the one that became a hit.In the last year I’ve put out two singles that are featured in this Music Day episode. The first, “The Fall Of Winter”, I co-wrote with Jim Peterik of the Ides Of March and formerly with Survivor. Among many other hits, Jim wrote “Eye Of The Tiger” for Survivor which became the theme song for the movie Rocky III starring Sylvester Stallone. He sings lead on “Winter” backed by me and my band, Project Grand Slam, and featuring a wonderful guitar solo by Elliott Randall of Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers fame.The second single is one that I wrote called “All Of The Time”. The theme of this Music Day episode is Cover Songs.A cover song is when an artist performs a song that someone else has already performed. Most artists have done covers. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, for example, both started out exclusively playing covers before they began to write their own songs.This episode presents two of my covers. I prefer to call them “reimagined versions” because I always try to make my covers as original as possible. The first is “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks. It features the wonderful Lucy Woodward on vocals. Dave Davies of The Kinks has praised our cover. The second is “The ‘In’ Crowd”, Dobie Gray’s hit that was also a jazz hit for Ramsey Lewis. The movie is all about Horn And Hardardt, which for a time was the biggest restaurant chain in the United States. Bruce Belland was a member of The Four Preps - America’s first boy band. Their 1958 million selling hit “26 Miles Across The Sea” made them into international pop stars. The song influenced Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and inspired Jimmy Buffett. The Preps were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show and had a recurring role in “Ozzie And Harriet”.
