Al Kooper is a true Superstar of rock music. He was a member of The Blues Project. He founded Blood Sweat & Tears. He recorded Super Session with Michael Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. He played the iconic organ part on Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone”. He played the french horn introduction and piano on the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. He discovered and produced Lynyrd Skynyrd. He co-wrote “This Diamond Ring”, the #1 hit for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. And he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Judy Collins is an iconic Renaissance Artist and Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter with 55 albums and hit singles including Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In The Clowns”. She has been a dominating force in social activism, as a filmmaker, author and as a keynote speaker. And she had one of the greatest songs of the rock era written about her - “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by Stephen Stills and Crosby Stills and Nash. In this wonderful interview we discuss her background and successes, including her artistic formative years in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with fellow artists Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Richie Havens and Peter Paul and Mary, and she tells a few terrific stories. And we do a Double Songfest. In the first one we play and discuss several songs by other artists who she loves including Shawn Colvin and Joan Baez, and in the second one we play and discuss some of her greatest works. Joey Dee and the Starlighters were Stars of the early 1960s. Joey wrote and sang “The Peppermint Twist”, a #1 song in 1962 that was integral to the worldwide twist dance craze phenomenon. They became the house band at The Peppermint Lounge in NYC, where people lined up each night to get in to rub elbows with the Stars of that era including Jackie Kennedy, Judy Garland and John Wayne.The band went on to have a number of other hits, and the list of famous musicians who played with Joey Dee includes Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes and Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals.My featured song is my reimagined version of Dobie Gray’s hit, “The ‘In’ Crowd” from the album PGS 7 by my band, Project Grand Slam. Peter Asher (Peter & Gordon) and Jeremy Clyde (Chad & Jeremy) were stars during the British Invasion era of the 1960s. Peter & Gordon had massive hits with songs like “A World Without Love” and “I Go To Pieces”. Peter went on to have an illustrious career in the music business, first as the head of A&R for Apple Records where he signed a then-unknown James Taylor, then as producer for many artists including Linda Ronstadt, and currently as the host of “From Me To You”, a weekly Beatles show on Sirius/XM. Jeremy was half of Chad & Jeremy who had several big hits including “Yesterday’s Gone” and “A Summer Song”. He tours together with Peter these days. We do two Songfests - one where we select and discuss several favorite British Invasion era songs by other artists that were One Hit Wonders or off the beaten path. WORLD PREMIERE!"The Gift": song by Robert Miller and arrangement by Michael Abene.I originally wrote "The Gift" as a love song ballad on the occasion of the birth of my first granddaughter. My band, Project Grand Slam, recorded and released the song in 2015 on our "Made In New York" album.In April 2024 Michael Abene was a guest on this podcast. Michael is a Grammy winning arranger and composer who has done arrangements for Germany's WDR Radio Big Band, the Maynard Ferguson Big Band, the GRP All-Star Big Band and many others. He's a true giant in his field. After the interview I asked Michael to listen to the original recording of "The Gift" and see if he might be inspired to come up with something new and different. Michael came back with a Big Band arrangement of the song written as a Samba, with horns.The new version was recorded at EastSide Sound by Lou Holtzman, my longtime studio/engineer, and features me and my Project Grand Slam band mates playing on the rhythm track, plus five horns. Harvey Brooks is one of the most important and heralded bass players of the entire rock era. Starting in the 1960s he played on so many seminal albums and singles including Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited", "Super Session" with Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Stephen Stills, Bloomfield's band, The Electric Flag, and even Miles Davis's groundbreaking album "Bitches Brew". This is a Very Special Episode celebrating that we’ve just passed 2 million downloads for the podcast! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, with no audience at all. It took two years to reach 1 million downloads but just one more year to reach 2 million.I’m extremely thankful for all the wonderful guests that I’ve had, and so appreciative of my audience for your support.When I began the podcast my goal was to motivate and encourage my listeners to follow their dream, whatever it may be, just as I had followed my youthful music dream later in life. It was only after I turned 60 that I was finally able to devote myself entirely to music. Since then I’ve released 14 acclaimed albums including a Billboard #1. I’ve also written a best selling book and started this podcast. As I like to say, you’re never too old, and it’s never too late, to follow your dream.My guests have been an amazing assortment of talented and successful musicians and other creatives. I’ve become friends with many of them. In this wonderful interview we discuss her background and successes, including her artistic formative years in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with fellow artists Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Richie Havens and Peter Paul and Mary, and she tells a few terrific stories. Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway’s greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. Welcome to the first Saxophone Summit! Featuring the following four extraordinary world class saxophone players: John Helliwell of Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. They dominated the charts in the 1970s with their album “Breakfast In America” which sold over 20 million copies. Fred Lipsius, the saxophonist and an arranger for Blood Sweat & Tears, another one of the greatest bands of the modern era, which introduced the horn section into Rock ‘n Roll. Their self-titled second album won the Grammy for Record Of The Year in 1970. Fred arranged several of their biggest hits including “Spinning Wheel” and “Hi De Ho”. Bob Reynolds, the saxophonist for Snarky Puppy, one of the great bands of this era. They are a Jazz Fusion band that’s won 5 Grammys.
