Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway’s greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. My band, Project Grand Slam, or PGS for short, has released 14 acclaimed albums and numerous singles, crossing multiple genres within Jazz and Rock. I pride myself on the variety of my music. So this episode is a short tour of PGS and a few of our Greatest Hits.“Spring Dance” is the title tune from our 2009 album. It heralds the beginning of springtime, one of the happiest and most anticipated times of the year. Spotify linkMy father was a trumpet player who loved Latin music, and PGS has always had wonderful Latin musicians. I wrote “The Queen’s Carnival” to celebrate that Latin tradition. Link“Ma Petite Fleur” - My Little Flower - is a love song ballad. I gave it a French title just because I thought it fit. LinkIn 2015 I reorganized the band and included the first of several outstanding female singers. So I started writing vocal songs for them like “Redemption Road” featuring the exquisite Ziarra Washington. LinkOne of my musical signatures has been to include on each album a reimagined version of a hit from the 1960s, the era when I came of age musically. My first one was Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” sung by the incomparable Kat Robichaud of The Voice fame. LinkMy band has always been at the top of its game when playing live. Here’s “Yeah Yeah” recorded live at a festival in Pennsylvania with the superb Marilyn Castillo on vocals. LinkOne of my greatest pleasures in doing the podcast are the musical collaborations that I’ve done with some of my World Class guests. Here are a few examples.“The Fall Of Winter” I co-wrote with the great Jim Peterik of The Ides Of March and formerly with Survivor. Elliott Randall of Steely Dan fame participated in this one too. Link“All Of The Time” is a gentle, whimsical love song. Tony Carey of Rainbow produced it and added a lovely organ part. Link“This Time”, from the album Bobby M and the Paisley Parade, features the great John Helliwell from Supertramp on sax. And me on the vocal. LinkI went back to my jazz roots with “The Gift”, a collaboration with Grammy winning arranger Michael Abene. He took my ballad and changed it into a big band Samba with me and my PGS bandmates as the rhythm section. LinkRecently I decided to return to my instrumental roots with “Sostice”, a single that I released last year. LinkAnd then most recently I took another single, “The Rich Ones”, and added 8 World Class musicians who had all been guests on the podcast and released a new extended version of the track called “The Rich Ones All Stars” which, I’m pleased to say, has been on fire on YouTube and Spotify. This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I’ve had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. I’m pleased to say that everyone who I asked agreed.The new version, “The Rich Ones All Stars”, features the following musicians in this order.BILLY COBHAM of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, recorded a new drum track for the tune. Billy is one of the most revered drummers of all time.I kept RANDY BRECKER’S flugelhorn solo from the original version of the tune because it’s just so darn good.JOHN HELLIWELL was the saxophonist in Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin’ Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ In The Years”. Elliott gave me a classic guitar solo for the new track.And last, but certainly not least, is DAVID AMRAM, who is, simply put, a National Treasure at 96 years young. He was Leonard Bernstein’s first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic and also the composer for Shakespeare In The Park among many other accomplishments. As we close out the year 2024 I am airing once again this episode begging for an end to the gun violence and mass shootings that plague our country.In 2018, in the immediate aftermath of yet another senseless, hate driven mass shooting at the Tree Of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, I wrote “Tree Of Life”. It’s a somber, mournful plea to find “a better way” to deal with gun violence and mass shootings. When I started this podcast in 2021 one of the first episodes I aired featured this song after yet another mass shooting. Then, in 2022, with the carnage continuing in schools and other public places, I aired the episode a second time. In September 2024, in the aftermath of yet another mass shooting in a school in Georgia, I aired the episode again. The cycle continues. The politicians offer only “thoughts and prayers”, but nothing changes and nothing gets done. Think about the fact that children attending school today must be taught what to do if there’s an active shooter! This is insanity. Why does this happen primarily in the U.S.? Maybe it’s because we have so many more guns in circulation than any other country. Maybe it’s because we haven’t outlawed automatic weapons designed for military use. I started this podcast 3 ½ years ago in March 2020 during the depths of the pandemic. My first episode was a Welcome Episode introducing myself and the podcast. At that time I had only a basic concept for the show - to motivate and inspire others to follow their dream, just as I had followed my youthful music dream later in life. Fast forward to today. I’ve published over 400 episodes to date, and the podcast has been ranked for some time in the Top 1% with listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries. My guests have included many famous and amazing musicians and other creatives. They dominated the charts in the 1970s with their album “Breakfast In America” which sold over 20 million copies. Fred Lipsius, the saxophonist and an arranger for Blood Sweat & Tears, another one of the greatest bands of the modern era, which introduced the horn section into Rock ‘n Roll. Their self-titled second album won the Grammy for Record Of The Year in 1970. Fred arranged several of their biggest hits including “Spinning Wheel” and “Hi De Ho”. Bob Reynolds, the saxophonist for Snarky Puppy, one of the great bands of this era. They are a Jazz Fusion band that’s won 5 Grammys.
