“Win And You’re In (The Playoff Picture)” SJS@PIT 01/28/23Dustin Tokarski is a new dad; like, REALLY new. My guess is he hasn’t slept in over 24 hours. Casey DeSmith starts in net tonight, and my guess is that means Casey DeSmith isn’t getting pulled even if he gives up a handful of goals in the first period. I thought Casey played damn well against the Capitals two nights ago, but coming as that performance was on the heels of a fairly dreadful outing against Florida on Tuesday, CDS has yet to establish himself as solid-of-late. Sending good vibes out to DeSmith, may the force be with him. For if it is not, the Penguins will likely go to sleep on the outside of the playoff picture. “Gap Control (In The Standings)” PIT@WSH 01/26/22 It’s that time again: Sid versus Ovi, eighty-seven versus eight, Penguins versus the Capitals. It’s ALWAYS exciting, isn’t it? And these two teams seem to perennially compete for a playoff spot, destined to at least ‘brush past’ one another en route to a playoff run. In the case of PIT against WSH, the ‘brush-by’ in question is typically of the less-gentle variety, and tempers tend to flare. It’s DeSmith in net tonight and, at least of late, that hasn’t meant wonderful things for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Number one from Rochester, NH looks to steady his side-to-side rocking ship, to stop pucks, to Get A Win. Casey needs a clean W for himself and for his Penguins who, whether due to injury bugs, bad bounces, or off-ice misfortune, have for some time looked a long way off from the back-to-back champs they once were. Rather, the Pens have fairly remade themselves as the club who takes their sweet time establishing a collective identity - until pretty darned deep into each NHL campaign.Thank you for listening!! “Jimmy Dragged Gabby Through The Mud” PIT@NJD 01/22/23Your Pens are on the road to take on the Devils at THE ROCK. Honestly, as a New Jersey native, I must say that the Prudential Center is a KILLER venue for NHL hockey. It’s also a TOUGH place to watch your team get beat. That said, the last Penguins road game I witnessed, as a resident of the Garden State was a W over the Devils. Let’s hope that Tristan Jarry, newly reinserted into PIT’s lineup and fresh off a clean, impressive, 44-save victory at home against Ottawa on Friday, can resume his All Star-caliber play. Moreover, the Penguins will need to ‘have-their-backstop’s-back,’ doing everything they can to contain the speedy Jersey squad. I start the episode with some tape from former Vancouver Canucks head coach, Bruce Boudreau. IMO, “Gabby” was fairly disrespected by GM Jim Rutherford, with the story of his impending firing leaking as early as November. What an awkward position to be in, no? And then to be unceremoniously dismissed as soon as the front office could get its chess pieces in place. Suppose that’s just the way the The Show works. The Pittsburgh crowd went wild, but the Penguins kinda just went, “Wha?” … And so, the Pens got their butts handed to them by the Jets, and the Black-and-Yellow faithful were sent home just a little more bruised than they already were, after what’s been a pretty lousy first half of the 2022-23 season for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania’s NHL Franchise. Casey DeSmith goes between the pipes against the mighty Carolina Hurricanes tonight. I stayed up late last night, watching the January 12, 1985 matchup of EDM@PIT, live from Civic Arena. It was Mario’s first time going up against Gretzky’s Oilers, and let me tell you: Apart from Lemieux scoring on his first shift, putting the Penguins up 1-0, the game used to be a HECK of a lot crazier back then. Obscene, uncalled violations of practically every sequence. So as much as we (I’m no exception) complain about, “Ref, how can you NOT call that,” trust me: The game we watch today is a WHOLE hell-of-a-lot more civilized than what was happening in the mid-eighties. Mark Friedman is back up with the NHL club, Pittsburgh Penguin Taylor Fedun will be wearing a suit and enjoying the game from the Mike Lange Media Level, and Andrew McCutchen is/was/is a Pirate. “Double Lucky” PIT@PHI 11/25/22Malkin attempted to throw his game-winning stick, up over the protective glass and into the crowd not once, but twice as he celly’d his way up the halfwall to Dan Vladar’s left. The game finally over, Malkin’s 1001st NHL tilt tucked neatly under his belt, the W secured for Pittsburgh. In the cosmic sense, Evgeni Malkin has truly done it all: Three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe trophy, the Art Ross, the Ted Lindsay, and the Hart Memorial trophy. And there’s more, some of it perhaps yet to come. But right now, what Geno tells us he wants, more than anything, is another Stanley Cup with his Penguins. Tonight’s matchup against Philadelphia has all the makings of a Pittsburgh loss. The Flyers are on a losing streak they’d love more than anything to break, and they’ve got home ice and a nationally broadcast game as the setting for such an upset. Moreover, the Penguins are only-just-barely finding a team-wide balance, sitting as they are a single point out of the eastern conference playoff picture. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and many will tell you it’s time to sing or get off the stage, so to speak. Well, if Philadelphia is the stage, Pittsburgh has the performer best suited for it. Sidney Crosby has been going on a mega-tear of late, most recently earning the NHL’s 1st Star Of The Week honors. Although 71’s 1000th NHL game already came and went, a 5-3 victory for his team, on the road in Chicago, the hometown fans have something to give Geno: A tsunami of clapping, shouting, board-pounding, foot-stomping, and whistling to be precise. The applause will last, it will echo through the rafters of PPG Paints Arena for as long as the Penguins’ current barn stands, as long as there are ice hockey games played within its property lines. Malkin, who has played his entire career both in Pittsburgh and in the shadow of one of the Hockey-Rushmore caliber Sidney Crosby, is a treasure of this franchise, of this league, and of the sport of hockey. “Evgeni Malkin’s 1,000th NHL Game” PIT@CHI 11/20/22Last night in Winnipeg, Tristan Jarry and the Pittsburgh Penguins played hard-and-smart for the FULL sixty minutes of regulation. They got rewarded, in the form of their very first shutout victory of the season. Following a historically bad losing streak, the Pens needed two things to come together in order for the team to feel stabilized. For one, they needed to play their game for the entirety of three periods. Then they were going to need their top goaltender to ratchet-strap the payload down to the bed of the bed of the pickup, chisel the ice off the tow hitch, and get back to work. Forget the recent 7 game losing streak, because when it comes to playing on the road in Chicago, the Penguins haven't won in that barn since 2009. The recent seven-game losing streak snapped in Washington just two nights ago, the Pens go back to goaler DeSmith, comma Casey, of Rochester, NH in an attempt to ride the momentum of whatever chemistry may have led to the team’s first victory - 4-1, over the Caps - in over two weeks. Felt longer than that, didn’t it? Sam Poulin is sent down to WBS, Mark Friedman is recalled but didn’t skate this morning. What seemed like it might be a wiping out of PIT’s D-Corps by a bruising Capitals team earlier this week …apparently wasn’t. All defenseman were present for today’s morning skate. Let’s hope the Penguins of Pittsburgh can keep a good thing going. “The Banshees of Cranberry” PIT@WAS 11/09/22Tonight, your Penguins visit the Washington Capitals for what is surely “just another” must-win game, because what game isn’t, when you’re in the midst of a historical, longest-in-the-Mike-Sullivan-era, epic-ass losing streak? Do I feel better? Yep, I do. Thanks for letting me try out some words. And now that I got that off my chest, exactly what *was it* were we talking about? Oh, right. The Caps. Yeah, they convincingly defeated the Edmonton Oilers a couple nights ago, even on a night when Connor McDavid did Connor McDavid things. So, do I expect the Penguins to go into the nation’s capital and defeat the team who sent EDM home with their tails between their legs? Nope. And don’t mistake my tone, here: I’m not giving up on these Penguins, not even for this season. Far from it. But to turn this ship around, while inserting into your lineup names like *Big Jeff Carter, Teddy Blueger, and Fillip Hallander, not to mention major D-pairing shuffling… Let’s just say I’d be happy with a game where the Pens play hard, leave it all out on the ice, and heck, I’ll even make a bit of a prediction here: Take home a loser’s point. That, to me, would be a step in the right direction. If, by hook or by crook the Penguins can eek out the W you won’t hear me complain. Longest episode notes ever? Check.
