How to Self Publish a Book and Earn Passive Income with Rachel Richards
In a recent article on CNBC, more than half or 51% of Americans have less than three months' worth of emergency savings. The pandemic has definitely made a mark on savings, and in my opinion, really shown that you need more than 3 months worth of savings in your “all hell broke loose” fund. However, saving more money is often times difficult. What about making more money? In this episode, you'll learn about another idea to create passive income. Rachel Richards, who has been on this show before for her rental real estate empire, has also has built a substantial monthly income from her book sales on Amazon. Even if you don’t profess to be a writer, surely there is something you have to share - a skill, a talent, an idea, etc. Rachel’s here to pull back the curtains and share the behind-the-scenes story of how she built a cash-flowing self-publishing side hustle in just a few years, and how you can do the same. Shannah Shares: How Do I Make Peace With My Money Situation
Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A where I tackle your listener questions. Today’s question comes from Reisha. “Hi Shannah. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my question. I really want to make 2022 better than the years prior. I’ve had a lot of anxiety and stress around money and just started realizing it after listening to your podcast. I always wondered why I would get so stressed out when I looked at my bank account, or when my credit card balance wasn’t decreasing so much, but then I would go and spend more money and get even more anxiety. It’s crazy to me that we do those sorts of things as humans. I do have a good job and make what most might consider a good income. But, things fall apart for me every month. I always think I will end up with more money left, which I don’t. I always think that I will just wake up one day and suddenly not be so stressed or anxious about money or my future, but I don’t. I heard you say in one episode a year or so back that you have to first make peace with your money situation before you can move forward. I actually wrote that down in the notes on my phone and keep coming back to it. Can you give me some tips and thoughts, things to journal about, anything really that can help me move towards peace? I really don’t want to spend the rest of my life stressed out about money when if you look at my take-home pay, I shouldn’t. I imagine someone else out there is feeling the same way. Actually, maybe we’re all ready to make peace. I think that’s what I love about this show, you always make me feel special and your non-judgemental approach is so heartwarming. Seriously, thanks. Ok, I know this is a big question, but would love your thoughts.” Episode Mentions Here are the journal questions mentioned in this episode. What emotion/s are you holding on to about money? In what ways do you feel like money keeps you stuck? How have you attached your identity to money? In what ways did your parents, or whoever raised you, talk about money? If money didn’t exist, how would your days, weeks, months, years change? Episode Sponsors Find out how Upstart can lower your monthly debt payments today when you go to UPSTART.com/mymoney. Shannah Shares: Are My Workplace Benefits Valuable
Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, community Q&A. In this episode, I’m tackling a question from a MMP listener, Susanna. “Hi there, Shannah. I’ve been listening to the show for a while now and finally got up enough nerve to ask a question. I’m new at a company and looking all over the workplace benefit options has my head spinning. I don’t know how to place any value on what I’m being offered, or really, what to pick. I’m also really thinking about money lessons from the pandemic and how that shapes my benefits - like hello mental health benefits. Also, I know I just started working for this company but I’m also considering making a big life change and start building my own business. Of course, if I do that, I loose out on all the juicy benefits…but again, I don’t even really know if those are of value. Ok, so you see, I’m lost here. I’d love to hear any tips from you or experts who can help guide me in valuing all of this and thinking about takeaways from the pandemic. Oh, also, any tips for deciding if it’s worth leaving these benefits behind because they can also be expensive. Thanks so much for answering my question.” I had a chance to speak with Marquis Smallwood, Vice President of Workforce Engagement at MetLife and Marsha Barnes, CEO of The Finance Bar, who deal with workplace benefits on a daily basis about this very question. Let’s hear their advice on how to know what benefits work for you and how to value those benefits. How to Invest in Stocks: The New Way to Build Wealth
Learning how to invest in stocks requires one rule - that you throw out the old rules and learn the new way to build wealth. Our guest, Joe Percoco, and his business partner, Clay Gardner, were frustrated that millennials only had two options for investing: buying and selling stocks themselves or investing in a market-weighted index. So they decided to create a third option. Joe is the co-founder and co-CEO of Titan, a fintech startup whose aim is to become this century’s answer to Fidelity Investments. With 500% growth in the last 12 months, 30,000+ users, nearly 1 billion in assets under management and a recent valuation of $450 Million - backed by investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Kevin Durant, Odell Beckham Jr. and Will Smith - it’s safe to say that Titan is well on its way to ushering in a new capital order. In this episode, you'll learn how to make money according to Joe, the new rules to investing, how to align your investing choices with your ethics, and so much more. Shannah Shares: What Is Going on With Inflation and How Will It Impact the Holidays
This episode of Shannah Shares was inspired by a listener question from Selena: "Hi, Shannah and everyone at Millennial Money. I was so excited to find your podcast last year in the midst of a very tough money year and really a tough year all around. I was feeling super down about my money and not being able to hit my goals. I just want to first say that you helped me get rid of some stress, sleep better, and hit my goal of fully funding my Roth IRA in 2020. This year, I wanted to go deeper, start stock investing, pay off some debt and get more of a money vision together, and I was like, let me see what my girl Shannah has to say. I’m so happy to report that I’ve checked all of those off my list even without making any additional money. Seriously, when you say we can do it, you actually mean it. I tell all my friends about this show. Ok, my question. I’m hearing a lot about inflation and the holidays and I don’t totally understand why I should care. I’m in my early 40’s and have heard stories when inflation was really high in the ’80s, I think, and there were lines for gas, getting a mortgage was super expensive, but what does it mean now and how will it impact this holiday season and I guess into next year. Thanks again for all you do…really, it makes a difference. Your friend Selena." I was joined by Kristin Meyers, Editor in Chief of The Balance, to provide insight into how inflation is hitting wallets this year, what consumers can expect over Christmas, and tips and tricks on how to rethink holiday shopping. bonusWe've got a BIG announcement and we need your help! We've made the decision to rename the show in 2022 to reach a bigger audience, be more inclusive, and grow the show to world domination status. We've spent months trying to find two good names that are available and really represent what this show is all about. I'd be honored if you could take a minute and head over to the survey below and let me know what you think the new name should be. I'll be doing a big reveal in January 2022 of what the new name will be. Nothing will change on your end - just a new name and a new logo, bigger guests, more money topics and so much more. Why We Eat What We Eat on Thanksgiving

The Secret Strategy to Invest in Real Estate and Earn Passive Income
Yes, it is possible to invest in real estate and earn passive income on any income. If you’re active on social media, you may have heard of Rachel Richards and her brand Money Honey. Rachel has been on the show in the past, however, in this episode she's sharing her story about getting started in real estate investing. The truth is Rachel isn’t a trust fund baby and actually never made six figures in a job. She found creative ways to save money and was saving half of her salary to ramp up to her first investment all with less than 20% down. Rachel is a great example of bringing intentionality to your money so you can achieve a money goal. In her 20’s she decided rental real estate was her means to generate passive income and essentially retired in less than 2 years. In her story, I hope you find a bit of yourself and motivation that you can create your own version of Rachel’s passive income success. In this episode, we talk about what it means to have financial freedom, how to think about passive income, how to get into real estate investing, how much money you need, how to spot a good deal, and so much more. EIn this Shannah Shares, Community Q&A episode, I'm sharing the 7 tips to help you stay focused on your money goals inspired by a question form Amanda: "I love your podcast and have been listening for over a year now being inspired and working towards my goals. Maybe my question isn't really a question, but more like a request for a pep talk. I have 4 main money goals that I've been slowly working towards Paying off my student loans, saving 4 months of expenses in my emergency fund, saving $3,000 in a what I like to call an "oh shit fund" (I can access this savings account much quicker than my emergency fund), and finally saving for a house. For the past 6 years, I've been laser-focused on paying off my student loans, but because of the pandemic, I decided to shift my focus on hitting my emergency fund goal. Recently, however, I've been struggling with staying focused on achieving the emergency fund goal. I now have only $9,000 left to go of my student loans and I'm also only 3 months away from hitting my emergency fund goal, but now I'm getting the urge to use basically all of my emergency fund money to pay off my student loans now. I know if I did this, I would feel AWESOME but know I would feel anxious knowing I had no emergency fund to fall back on. Do you have any suggestions for staying focused on one goal before making a rash decision and jumping to another goal? I know these are all good problems to have, but I would really love some words of encouragement or advice on how to stay focused on my current goal. Shannah Shares: Prenup vs. Postnup - Everything You Need to Know
This episode of Shannah Shares was inspired by a question from Brian and Tracey. They have friends who recently got a postnuptial agreement and are curious about how they work and if it makes sense for them. As controversial as they might be, if you're thinking about a prenup or a postnup, the first place you should start is getting some education around these hot-button documents. Jennifer Guimond-Quigley is joining us on this episode to demystify what you need to know about prenups, and breaking down the differences between postnups in a fun and an easily digestible way (no crazy lawyer speak here, just a totally educational and enjoyable conversation). Shannah Shares: Is All Debt Bad?
The Community Q&A comes from Sheila who writes: "Well hi there Shannah, thanks for all the great money gems that you dish out on the show. You’ve really changed my life and I love listening to episodes over and over again because I always learn something else. This podcast is like my fun encyclopedia for all things money. That sounds bad - seriously this show is fun and educational. Ok, so I have a question. I’ve really been thinking about my debt and want to seriously tackle it. I know you’ve done a lot of episodes on this, but curious if there’s one that you could point me to. I’m trying to reframe how I’m thinking about debt too. I know you mention that not all debt is bad...I mean, is that true? I seriously hope it is because it feels really unrealistic to say that I will never have debt and that when I’m debt-free, I won’t have debt again. That just doesn’t make any sense. So I think the trick is to figure out how to pay it off with a strategy as you say and then have a good mindset about debt going forward. Anyway, I’d love to hear any guest again that you think has a good perspective on this whole debt thing. Please keep up the podcast...it’s honestly the reason why my finances are so together and it feels really good." Take a listen to this episode featuring Michael Bovee and his take on debt. Michael is a debt expert and co-founder of Resolve a company that helps people in financial distress navigate their way to financial health. In this chat, Michael shares ways to pay down debt, the nitty-gritty about debt settlement, and the ins and outs of filing for bankruptcy. My rule is there is no room for judgment when it comes to debt – life happens, things happen, let this episode be a tool you can use if you or anyone you know find themselves making debt payoff a top resolution for 2020. Shannah Shares: Tearing Down 5 Investing Taboos
Tearing down 5 investing taboos on this episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A. Today's question comes from Laquesha: "Hi Shannah. Thanks so much for answering my question. I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can’t figure out if I’m supposed to wait to start investing until I’ve paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that’s not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a kiling, and I kinda feel bad that I haven’t started at all, know what I mean. You’ve done so many great investing episodes, I’m curious if there’s an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You’re awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. My boyfriend can’t believe I care this much about my money, but I just tell him, yes, yes I do and so should you. Ok, thanks again." Shannah Shares: Use These Two Tricks to Prioritize Your Savings Goals
Every Sunday I’m going to be answering your questions in these special Shannah Shares community Q&A episodes. Sometimes I’ll tackle a single question and sometimes it might be multiple questions, so keep tuning in. Today’s Community question comes from Robbie: "Hi there, Shannah, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question and for all the great money content. I’m seriously learning so much. I wish I would’ve had this podcast when I was in college. I’m in my mid 30’s now and I just feel like I’m playing catch up all the time. I make good money, between my partner and me around $300K a year. We live in Chicago though and it can be pretty expensive. We’ve got some goals we’re trying to save for - a wedding, a home purchase, and a big honeymoon trip. The problem is that we save money and then we tend to blow it on things that aren’t so important or need it for emergencies or just dump stuff. Can you help us figure out how to prioritize our money goals seeing as we want to save for big stuff? I feel like I could use a little of your tough love to get us on the right track. Every article I read just says to spend less and that isn’t really helpful. Thanks again and I hope you never stop this podcast because I would be so lost money-wise."
