Single Women & Money: How to Spend, Save, & Invest Wisely
I have some shocking info to share with you. Data shows that almost all women will be single at some point either later in life or in the earlier years. Whether it’s being married and getting a divorce, being married and being widowed, or never getting married, if you’re a woman listening, buckle up for singlehood. And, unlike dual-earning couples, many of America’s 66 million unmarried women survive on one income. Yep, I know, mind blown, right? Of course, women earn less and are more at risk when things like the current levels of inflation spike up. What this means is that we have to be smarter with how we save, spend and invest our money. Margaret Price and Jill Gianola have written a great book called, Single Women & Money detailing everything you need to know to live well on your income. These powerhouse women are guests on this episode and share why the money situation for single women differs greatly, how the economy impacts single women more intensely, financial resources for single women in hardship, and key money steps to take in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and so much more. Let’s jump into the conversation. Links Single Women & Money book Meet Margaret and Jill Episode Sponsors Thanks to Chime for sponsoring the show. Get started with Chime today. In this episode, I'm featuring a Budget Rescue with Robert who asks: "Hi Shannah, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. BTW I love the new name of the show. This is one of the only places I feel like we can listen to all different types of conversations and you always surprise me with the topics. It’s so cool. I’m writing to see if you would give me some insights into my monthly budget. Here’s my snapshot - I make around $5K per month and have a fairly stable job, at least I think so. Here’s my spending: Rent - $1950 Car payment - $350 Student Loans - $300 once the pause stops in August Credit cards - I owe $6300 on two cards and pay $250 on one and $275 on the other. I know I need to get rid of this debt Groceries - approximately $100 a week/ $400 a month Eating out - $500 (sigh, I like to eat out a lot) Household items - $150 Dog care - approx $125 a month Clothes shopping - $150 a month on average Utilities - $250 a month Car insurance - $165 a month ATT cell phone - $127 a month I know that I should have around $350 - $500 a month left over but the problem is that I don’t each month and I can’t figure out why. You’re super good at helping people with their budgets so I was wondering if you could give me some pointers and thoughts on what I might be missing or not including here. I’d like to be able to save some money for my ER fund every month and put some into a travel savings account. Thanks again for this show…it’s helped me so much." When you get married, you want to start your shared life together on the right financial foot. Most people are so involved with wedding planning that they put off having necessary money conversations that always arise after you tie the knot, and those often lead to fights and relationship breakdowns. Shannah Shares: 7 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Money Goals
In this Shannah Shares, Community Q&A episode, I'm sharing the 7 ways to stay focused on your money goals inspired by a question form Amanda: "I love your podcast and have been listening for over a year now being inspired and working towards my goals. Maybe my question isn't really a question, but more like a request for a pep talk. I have 4 main money goals that I've been slowly working towards Paying off my student loans, saving 4 months of expenses in my emergency fund, saving $3,000 in a what I like to call an "oh shit fund" (I can access this savings account much quicker than my emergency fund), and finally saving for a house. For the past 6 years, I've been laser-focused on paying off my student loans, but because of the pandemic, I decided to shift my focus on hitting my emergency fund goal. Recently, however, I've been struggling with staying focused on achieving the emergency fund goal. I now have only $9,000 left to go of my student loans and I'm also only 3 months away from hitting my emergency fund goal, but now I'm getting the urge to use basically all of my emergency fund money to pay off my student loans now. I know if I did this, I would feel AWESOME but know I would feel anxious knowing I had no emergency fund to fall back on. Do you have any suggestions for staying focused on one goal before making a rash decision and jumping to another goal? I know these are all good problems to have, but I would really love some words of encouragement or advice on how to stay focused on my current goal. Shannah Shares: 7 Tips To Focusing On Your Money Goals
EIn this Shannah Shares, Community Q&A episode, I'm sharing the 7 tips to help you stay focused on your money goals inspired by a question form Amanda: "I love your podcast and have been listening for over a year now being inspired and working towards my goals. How to Save Money On Everyday Essentials So You Afford Your Money Goals
With inflation, rising gas prices and the higher cost of groceries, saving money on everyday essentials is a necessity. Being financially well off isn’t about earning 50% more in your job, winning the lottery or coming into a ton of cash. It’s the everyday small amounts of money you can save here and there and then routing that towards your expenses and goals. You may remember Jay Klauminzer, CEO from one of my very fav apps Raise, on previous episodes. Shannah Shares: How Can I Reach My Money Goals When I’m Always Stressed Out
Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares Community Q&A. In this episode, I’m answering a listener question from Richard. “Hi Shannah. I feel like I know you but I only know you through my earbuds three times a week. Thanks for this show. Honestly, it’s given me life in a time when I felt so stressed out with money. I’m 41 and to be completely transparent with you I’ve never really learned about money. I’ve just fumbled my way through. I would imagine someone else is listening and agreeing. My parent’s never taught me about money, I didn’t learn it in school and I’ve felt left to figure this all out. I’m doing pretty well as far as salary but I don’t have a lot to show for it at the end of the month. That’s hard to admit. Even though I make 6 figures I’m still living paycheck to paycheck and it’s stressing me the f out. I set all these money goals all the time and then I never reach them. In fact, I just don’t make progress because I feel like I’m full of so much money shame, guilt, and just anxiety. I don’t want to live stressed anymore and I know that is what is in the way of me making progress. You’ve been so great at helping me see how I can’t make good money choices when I’m full of anxiety. Thank you for talking about something that no other money person seems to address. You’ve done so many great episodes around this I’m curious if there’s one that you think I have to listen to ….even listen to again to let the words sink in. I may be your biggest fan because I feel like I have your calming voice to encourage me each week. Thanks again, Richard.” Links Muse Muse mobile app Ariel Garten on LinkedIn Episode Sponsors Get started with Issuu today for FREE or if you sign up for a premium account you will get 50% off when you go to ISSUU.com/mymoney. Why Is Financial Inclusion Important & How Does It Impact Your Life
Did you know that 30% of the population of the world is still unbanked? Meaning, 30% of the world’s population can’t easily get to a bank, let alone deposit a check, take cash out, or use any of the conveniences that help you pay for your life. And, on top of that 93% of bank closures happen in low-income areas. In this episode, I have an important conversation with Briana Marbury. Briana serves as Executive Director of the Interledger Foundation, which aims to build access to financial pathways around the world. She brings 15 years of non-profit experience and leadership to the role, as well as a passion for promoting financial inclusion for all. She is dedicated to expanding the public’s understanding of how we can use technology’s immense potential to improve lives. You’ll learn what it means to be unbanked, how Briana thinks we can increase access to financial services, what role crypto plays in our society, why financial inclusion is critical for us all, and how her money story was shaped as a young woman who didn’t have many banking options. Shannah Shares: Is My Life Insurance Enough For My Family
On this episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A, I'm answering a question from Erica: "Hi Shannah! First off I love your podcast. Your podcast has helped me so much. I learn something new every time I tune in. My question is this. I'm 31 years old with a 2-year-old son which I’m the sole provider for. When he was born I bought a term life insurance policy for 20 or 25 years for 10x my salary. I thought I was thoroughly covered as all the financial advice I get says that’s what you should get to make sure your child is taken care of when you’re gone. Two weeks ago my uncle passed away unexpectedly and I’ve been assisting in planning his funeral. My question is this if you have term life insurance and you live past that then essentially you’re no longer covered and now need some other type of burial policy; what type of insurance or burial policy would you recommend? Should I get that in place now because I’m young with no major health issues or can I wait until the policy I have now expires? I want to not only be sure my son is covered if something happened to me during his childhood but also that I’m not a burden to him in my adulthood. Thanks for your advice and all that you do. What would the world look like if women had money rights from the start of time? I would imagine a very different world. Women have been pushing their way into equality for years. It was just 1963 when the Equal Pay Act was passed and1974 when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act made it illegal for credit card companies to discriminate against women. If you are a woman listening you know we still have a long way to go, but thanks to these 5 female pioneers our future is brighter. Shannah Shares: 5 Investing Taboos to Break
Are these 5 investing taboos keeping you stuck? In Today's Shannah Shares, Community Q&A reboot episode, I tackle a question from Laquesha: "Hi Shannah. Thanks so much for answering my question. I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can’t figure out if I’m supposed to wait to start investing until I’ve paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that’s not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a kiling, and I kinda feel bad that I haven’t started at all, know what I mean. You’ve done so many great investing episodes, I’m curious if there’s an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You’re awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. My boyfriend can’t believe I care this much about my money, but I just tell him, yes, yes I do and so should you. Ok, thanks again." I will be the first to admit that Valentine’s Day is most definitely a Hallmark holiday. And let’s be real, dating, wooing, courting, falling in love, whatever you want to call it, it can be expensive. In this episode, Kristin Myers, Editor in Chief of The Balance is here to share the best ways to afford the cost of dating. BTW, in a recent study they did at The Balance, millennials spend on average $69 for first dates, yes, really! Kristin is also sharing how to create a perfect date for a fraction of the price when you should talk about money with your honey and the impacts of inflation on your wallet. Plus, we both get a little personal sharing some of our favorite dating stories. This episode is sure to make your heart swell. How to Tame Your Money Anxiety with Emily Rose
Learning to tame your money anxiety takes some practice. I’m a big fan of this episode because I will be the first to raise my hand and shout, “I have money anxiety.” Our guest, Emily Rose, is here to enlighten us all on this topic of money anxiety. Emily is a school psychologist, yoga teacher, author of the journal Write it to Right it, and also runs the blog, MissMagnoliaSays.com. As Emily says, we all have anxiety around money, but for each of us, that looks a little different. Our biggest anxieties tend to come from the comparison trap - you know the “shoulds.” We’re all familiar with the “shoulds,” right? I should know how to invest, I should do this with my money, I should have a good credit score or I should own a house right now. It’s completely normal to run through the laundry list of things you should’ve done. In fact, Emily’s overall message is that having anxiety is actually normal. See, we all have anxious thoughts around money and that’s ok. In this episode, Emily helps you understand how anxiety might be showing up for you, ways to recognize those anxious thoughts, and some practical exercises to help you when you feel your money worries bubbling to the surface. In this special reboot of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A, I'm sharing how to prioritize your savings goals for the big stuff. Today’s Community question comes from Robbie: "Hi there, Shannah, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question and for all the great money content. I’m seriously learning so much. I wish I would’ve had this podcast when I was in college. I’m in my mid 30’s now and I just feel like I’m playing catch up all the time. I make good money, between my partner and me around $300K a year. We live in Chicago though and it can be pretty expensive. We’ve got some goals we’re trying to save for - a wedding, a home purchase, and a big honeymoon trip. The problem is that we save money and then we tend to blow it on things that aren’t so important or need it for emergencies or just dump stuff. Can you help us figure out how to prioritize our money goals seeing as we want to save for big stuff? I feel like I could use a little of your tough love to get us on the right track. Every article I read just says to spend less and that isn’t really helpful. Thanks again and I hope you never stop this podcast because I would be so lost money-wise."
