Practical Steps to Rewrite and Reclaim Your Money Story

If you’ve ever seen a movie, read a book, or listened to a song, you know how important stories are. Stories are what root you in life and give a lot of context to who you are and what you do. On this show, we like to talk about the idea of your money story. Think of your money story as a collection of how you were raised, your views toward money, your beliefs, and all the things that have happened to you related to money. Your money story holds great power over your relationship with money and understanding your story is vital to you being able to live the life you want to live. Our guest, Christina Blacken knows a little something about money stories herself. She’s a public speaker, performer, and founder of The New Quo, a leadership development and inclusion consultancy helping leaders create inclusive cultural and organizational change through narrative intelligence. Christina says, “when you think about money, what are the negative ideas of beliefs that pop up? And when you start to list those out, you can surprise yourself with, wow, I have a very specific narrative around money and how it connects to my identity, self-worth, lifestyle, and the impact I’m having in the world.” In this episode, Christina will guide you through questions to help you unpack your narrative around money and figure out if your money truly lines up with your values so you can rewrite and reclaim your money story. How to Take Back Control of Your Financial Life

How good would it feel to take back control of your financial life and stop feeling so financially stressed? I’m hoping your answer is, “pretty awesome, but how do I do that?” According to our guest, Liz Davidson, CEO of Financial Finesse, a leading provider of unbiased financial wellness programs in the country, you have to start by getting financially well. Just like you take care of your mental health, you also need to give your money some TLC beyond spreadsheets and calculators. Believe it or not, just 23 years ago the term financial wellness didn’t exist until Liz coined it and started a revolution of looking at your money from a holistic perspective - for example, instead of isolating one goal that you have, you look at all your goals in terms of the entire vision you have for your money and life. This is what it means to take back control of your financial life. In this episode, Liz is sharing everything from what it means to be financially well and how you can get there, why you shouldn’t sacrifice money goals while paying off debt, how to prioritize your money goals going forward, and the power of unbiased money advice(yes, it does actually exist). We cover all this and so much more with Liz, who happens to be a big influence in my financial life and my career. There’s a lot of fangirling in this episode. Are you ready to take back control? Is the Paycheck Worth the Pain

Is the paycheck worth the pain, that’s the question we’re diving into? Ok, friends, I’ve got a powerful money story to share with you from our guest Jaime Fiore Higgins, author of the new book, Bully Market: My Story of Money and Misogyny at Goldman Sachs in this episode that is going to rock your world. As I talked with Jaime it reminded me of a time in my own career, the only corporate job that I’ve had when I worked for a guy who let’s just say was not a good boss. I lost a part of my soul for that paycheck and told myself I would NEVER do that again. But my story isn’t unique. Maybe you have a story like mine where you struggled with the question, is the paycheck worth the pain? As our guest, Jaime says, “money is a sticky thing. We all need it but we don’t think about the sacrifices we make to earn it.” In this episode, you’ll hear the twists and turns of Jaime’s story, her advice to you if you’re in a similar situation, and the steps you can take to take back your power and see beyond the paycheck. This story is as juicy and important as it comes. Let’s start talkin’. LINKS Bully Market book Jaime's website SPONSORS Thanks to ShipStation for sponsoring the show. How to Get Paid As a Freelancer, Entrepreneur, or Creative

I often tell people that I’m allergic to fluorescent lights. It’s, of course, not actually true, but I’ve really only had one W-2 9-5 job in my life and have always been an entrepreneur and freelancer at heart. There are a lot of perks that come with freelancing like the ability to make unlimited money and of course working in your pj’s and grabbing snacks whenever you want. But, there are downsides to freelancing and being an entrepreneur. It’s often hard to get paid after you do your job. Most companies like to really drag out the payment schedule and that can leave you really feeling in pinch. With high inflation, so many freelancers are extra nervous as companies are trying to cut costs. Not to worry, our guest Tony Tran, is the CEO and co-founder of Lumanu, is a platform that democratizes the creator economy by allowing creators and freelancers like you to grow, collaborate, and thrive on their own terms. Tony shares how to get paid as a freelancer or creator, tax changes impacting freelancers, important deductions that you might not know about, and how to deal with the mental health side of freelancing and worrying about money. So all you side hustlers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and creators, this episode is jam-packed with great information to set you up for money success. Let’s start talkin’. How to Deal With Money Anxiety: The Signs, How It Impacts Your Body, and Affordable Ways for Help

It’s time to get our therapy on in this episode. This is probably one of the most important episodes we’ve done because it hits at the heart of what we all feel about money - it’s stressful and causes a great deal of anxiety. There are countless studies that show that money is the #1 cause of stress and anxiety and most of us are left to figure out how to deal with it in a world where talking about money is still a taboo topic. As our guest, psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora, author of a new book called The Anatomy of Anxiety says, anxiety, it’s all in your head, right? Wrong. Money anxiety is a complex topic with many onion layers and as Ellen says, anxiety often begins first in our bodies. We dive into this complex topic of anxiety and talk about what goes on in your body when you’re anxious, how to make decisions when you’re feeling anxious, tips and techniques to manage your anxiety, and how to figure out what your money anxiety is actually telling us. Prenup vs. Postnup: What's the Difference and Which One Do You Need

This special Halloween vault episode of Shannah Shares was inspired by a question from Brian and Tracey. They have friends who recently got a postnuptial agreement and are curious about how they work and if it makes sense for them. As controversial as they might be, if you're thinking about a prenup or a postnup, the first place you should start is getting some education around these hot-button documents. Jennifer Guimond-Quigley is joining us on this episode to demystify what you need to know about prenups, and breaking down the differences between postnups in a fun and an easily digestible way (no crazy lawyer speak here, just a totally educational and enjoyable conversation). The True Cost vs. Investment of Dog Ownership

You’ve probably heard the saying, dogs are man’s and woman’s best friend. Well, I can tell you after getting our pup Winnie this year, that is for sure a true statement. We all know dogs are so much more than that, they are true family members. What is also true is that dogs can be an expensive investment. I don’t even want to tell you how much money we’ve already spent on toys and chews alone in the first 6 months of having Winnie, which I am sure all you dog parents can relate to. So I thought it made sense to devote a whole episode to our furry best friends and explore dog ownership, the costs vs. investment. Our guest on this dogolicious episode is Krista Karpowich who owns Wag Out Loud and is the host of the Wag Out Loud pawdcast. The Wag Out Loud pawdcast is a show that helps us pet parents to be the best advocate for your dog’s health and wellness. She’s here to share everything she knows about dogs including how much money to spend on food, what to feed your dog, what kind of pet insurance she loves, how much money to devote to training, treats and toys, and so much more. Whether you have a dog or are looking to bring one into your life, this episode is for you. LINKS Wag Out Loud Pumpkin Trupanion Lemonade Pawp SPONSORS Thanks to ShipStation for sponsoring the show. The True Story of Money & Why It's a Made-Up Thing with Jacob Goldstein

Have you ever sat back and wondered, “what is the actual story of how and why money was created?” In every episode of this pod we’re talking about different ways to better your relationship with money and breaking down all the how-to’s and how not to’s with money. But, let’s take a step back from that if you’ll indulge me, and let’s look at why we even use money in the first place. I think you can certainly agree that money has messed us up - it’s divided us, it causes so much stress and fear, and money also has the power to create change and a lot of other good stuff. It’s a complicated story that our guest, Jacob Goldstein, author of the book Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing, former co-host of NPR’s Planet Money podcast, and host of a new podcast called What’s Your Problem took a deep dive into. Jacob’s new book is a must-read riveting story of money with all its twists and turns. I’m going to let Jacob tell you more, like the story of how Marco Polo uncovered that people were using paper money and how it changed everything, and so many other juicy details that we chat about. Stop Being Aimlessly Broke & Start Being Broke on Purpose

Raise your hand if you’ve ever said these words, “I’m broke?” We throw the word broke around almost as much as we do with my least favorite words, “I’m fine.” What does it actually mean to be broke - my guess is a little something different for us all. As our guest, Dr. Melody Wright, founder of Broke on Purpose and Kinly’s Director of Financial Education says, “there’s a difference between being aimlessly broke and broke on purpose.” Broke on purpose is a choice you make proactively to help you pay off debt, buy that house you’ve been saving for, or any other money goal that means something to you. Melody has helped thousands of people stop being Aimlessly Broke, and transform their mindset, behaviors, and practices related to money, and she’s here to help you do that same thing in this thought-provoking episode. Ask Shannah: Should I Break Up Over Money

This Ask Shannah episode was inspired by a question from Nicole who wrote, “Shannah, I’m so thrilled to have found the Everyone’s Talkin’ Money podcast. You cover so many topics that I never knew I wanted to learn about and I’m always sharing them as you ask me to do with friends, so thank you. Ok, I’ve got a doozy of a question. My partner and I are always getting into fights over money. We’ve been together for 5 years now and are considering marriage but I’m pretty scared. We’ve gone to therapy about money but it feels like nothing changes. My partner and I both sneak and hide things we’re buying that we both know are bad. I’ve listened to a lot of your episodes on mindset and money trauma and I really get into them but then I have a hard time talking to my partner about what I learn and what I’m feeling. I don’t know, I just feel like all we’re doing is fucking up our relationship by letting money take such a front seat. Any advice and tips and anything else you can share I’d so appreciate it. I’m going to be bold and say that I’m sure I’m not the only one listening who is also letting money f-up the relationship.” SPONSORS Thanks to Chime for sponsoring the show. How to Untangle Your Relationship with Money

It’s been almost a year since my husband Jeff and I moved to the East Coast from Los Angeles. This last year has been a giant process of untangling a lot of stuff that I had gotten tangled up, including maybe even shockingly so, parts of my relationship with money. I want to ask you, are there parts of your relationship with money that need to be untangled? I was so excited to talk with our guest Angela McKinney, an additional recovery expert, somatic guide, and author of a new book Untangle: How to Create Big Possibilities Through Small Changes for this episode. Angela has a 3-Step mind-body system called The Untangle Method that she’s walking you through in this episode. How to Break The Top 5 Investing Taboos

Are these 5 investing taboos keeping you stuck? In Today's Shannah Shares, Community Q&A vault episode, I tackle a question from Laquisha: "Hi Shannah. Thanks so much for answering my question. I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can’t figure out if I’m supposed to wait to start investing until I’ve paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that’s not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a killing, and I kinda feel bad that I haven’t started at all, know what I mean. You’ve done so many great investing episodes, I’m curious if there’s an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You’re awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. My boyfriend can’t believe I care this much about my money, but I just tell him, yes, yes I do and so should you. Ok, thanks again." The Receipe To Finally Succeed at Budgeting

Alright, raise your hand if you’ve tried budgeting, you’ve tried all the apps, and for whatever reason, you’ve decided that something must be wrong with you because it doesn’t work. Well, my friend, you aren’t alone. I too have tried my share of budgeting apps only to get frustrated at the process because I know that most traditional budgeting programs and apps are missing the golden key you need to actually be successful. They are all missing the psychology piece - aka a deeper dive into your thoughts, feelings, habits, beliefs, childhood money stories and so much more. I like to call it the gunk that actually matters when you’re trying to better your money situation. Well, I’m not alone. Our guest, Dani Pascarella is a Certified Financial Planner who previously worked on Wall Street and decided that she was fed up with traditional budgeting and decided to start OneEleven and create a budgeting app that focuses on the psychology of money. We talk about why money is the #1 cause of stress, why traditional budgeting is broken, steps you can take to ensure you achieve your money goals, and so much more. Let’s start talkin’ money. Shannah Shares: 7 Ways to Stay Focused On Your Money Goals

Shannah Shares: 7 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Money Goals In this Shannah Shares, Community Q&A vault episode, I'm sharing the 7 tips to help you stay focused on your money goals inspired by a question from Amanda: "I love your podcast and have been listening for over a year now being inspired and working towards my goals. Maybe my question isn't really a question, but more like a request for a pep talk. I have 4 main money goals that I've been slowly working towards Paying off my student loans, saving 4 months of expenses in my emergency fund, and saving $3,000 in what I like to call an "oh shit fund" (I can access this savings account much quicker than my emergency fund), and finally saving for a house. For the past 6 years, I've been laser-focused on paying off my student loans, but because of the pandemic, I decided to shift my focus on hitting my emergency fund goal. Recently, however, I've been struggling with staying focused on achieving the emergency fund goal. I now have only $9,000 left to go on my student loans and I'm also only 3 months away from hitting my emergency fund goal, but now I'm getting the urge to use basically all of my emergency fund money to pay off my student loans now. I know if I did this, I would feel AWESOME but know I would feel anxious knowing I had no emergency fund to fall back on. Do you have any suggestions for staying focused on one goal before making a rash decision and jumping to another goal? I know these are all good problems to have, but I would really love some words of encouragement or advice on how to stay focused on my current goal. Why You Should Crockpot Your Savings & Skip the Microwave

We're featuring one of my favorite vault episodes from 2018 that was a listener favorite. I hope you enjoy it! All personal finance experts can agree on one thing – starting to save early will almost always help you reach your lifestyle goals quicker and with more ease than those who wait longer. When you think about your savings there are two ways you can save – the crockpot style or the microwave style. Inspired by a recent industry article in Financial Planning Magazine, thinking about a crockpot for your savings strategy makes pretty good sense. With any crockpot recipe, the idea is simple. You gather all your ingredients ahead of time, throw them into the crockpot, turn it on low and slow for 6-8 hours, and then you have an almost always perfect meal sure to wow anyone. What You'll Learn We’ll chat about the crockpot method of savings Why a crockpot method might make more sense than microwaving your savings Focus on saving little by little over time with consistency so whenever you reach the age you would like to quit working, your investments and savings have spent some time “cooking together.” Let’s talk about what you can and can’t control with your savings Some guidelines to always keep in mind with savings Links Mentioned: 401(k) Calculator How Much to Save for Retirement Investor Questionnaire Risk Tolerance Profile (just pretend it’s in USD) Episode Sponsors Thanks to Chime for sponsoring the show. Franchising 101: Everything You Need to Know to Invest in a Franchise

Have you ever been curious about franchising? There smart ways to invest in a franchise, you just need to know how to find the right one. I’ve been super excited about this episode because, believe it or not, in 875 episodes I’ve never talked about franchising. I have to admit, I had some preconceived notions about franchising, but I’m happy to say that they were blown out of the water after this conversation. For the past 20 years, Kim Daly has been helping people realize their dreams of business ownership through franchising - and I’m not just talking about all those fast food chains you drive by every day. The franchising business goes way deeper and Kim’s job is to help you figure out what franchise aligns with your life goals. This episode is an inspiring story that could help you build wealth and achieve your dreams in a business model that my guess is you might not have explored before. As I always say, everything with money deserves a listen and then you have the info to figure out whether it’s a fit for you.
