How to Work a 9-5 & Be a Successful Real Estate Investor with Profitable Short-term Rentals
Can you have the best of both worlds - working a job that you love while being a successful real estate investor and building wealth? If you’re Rachel Gainsbrugh the answer is yes. Rachel was facing what so many of us face, huge student loans - I’m talking over $500K, and a passion to figure out a revenue stream that would help her create a life she didn’t need a vacation from. After a lot of research, Rachel found short-term real estate rentals, mainly through Airbnb, and was able to create a 15X revenue stream, which basically changed her life and her family’s. In this episode, we dive into Rachel’s story of success as she shares with you how to find the right properties for short-term rentals, how to avoid some of the biggest mistakes when it comes to real estate investing, and how to work a 9-5 job and still be a successful real estate investor. I hope this episode inspires you to think that if Rachel can do it, you can too. Let’s start talkin’. The True Story of Money & Why It's a Made-Up Thing with Jacob Goldstein
Have you ever sat back and wondered, “what is the actual story of how and why money was created?” In every episode of this pod we’re talking about different ways to better your relationship with money and breaking down all the how-to’s and how not to’s with money. But, let’s take a step back from that if you’ll indulge me, and let’s look at why we even use money in the first place. I think you can certainly agree that money has messed us up - it’s divided us, it causes so much stress and fear, and money also has the power to create change and a lot of other good stuff. It’s a complicated story that our guest, Jacob Goldstein, author of the book Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing, former co-host of NPR’s Planet Money podcast, and host of a new podcast called What’s Your Problem took a deep dive into. Jacob’s new book is a must-read riveting story of money with all its twists and turns. I’m going to let Jacob tell you more, like the story of how Marco Polo uncovered that people were using paper money and how it changed everything, and so many other juicy details that we chat about. Stop Being Aimlessly Broke & Start Being Broke on Purpose
Raise your hand if you’ve ever said these words, “I’m broke?” We throw the word broke around almost as much as we do with my least favorite words, “I’m fine.” What does it actually mean to be broke - my guess is a little something different for us all. As our guest, Dr. Melody Wright, founder of Broke on Purpose and Kinly’s Director of Financial Education says, “there’s a difference between being aimlessly broke and broke on purpose.” Broke on purpose is a choice you make proactively to help you pay off debt, buy that house you’ve been saving for, or any other money goal that means something to you. Melody has helped thousands of people stop being Aimlessly Broke, and transform their mindset, behaviors, and practices related to money, and she’s here to help you do that same thing in this thought-provoking episode. I’ll let Melody show you the way. Let’s start talkin’. Ask Shannah: Should I Break Up Over Money
This Ask Shannah episode was inspired by a question from Nicole who wrote, “Shannah, I’m so thrilled to have found the Everyone’s Talkin’ Money podcast. You cover so many topics that I never knew I wanted to learn about and I’m always sharing them as you ask me to do with friends, so thank you. Ok, I’ve got a doozy of a question. My partner and I are always getting into fights over money. We’ve been together for 5 years now and are considering marriage but I’m pretty scared. We’ve gone to therapy about money but it feels like nothing changes. My partner and I both sneak and hide things we’re buying that we both know are bad. I’ve listened to a lot of your episodes on mindset and money trauma and I really get into them but then I have a hard time talking to my partner about what I learn and what I’m feeling. I don’t know, I just feel like all we’re doing is fucking up our relationship by letting money take such a front seat. Any advice and tips and anything else you can share I’d so appreciate it. I’m going to be bold and say that I’m sure I’m not the only one listening who is also letting money f-up the relationship.” SPONSORS Thanks to Chime for sponsoring the show. How to Break The Top 5 Investing Taboos
Are these 5 investing taboos keeping you stuck? In Today's Shannah Shares, Community Q&A vault episode, I tackle a question from Laquisha: "Hi Shannah. Thanks so much for answering my question. I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can’t figure out if I’m supposed to wait to start investing until I’ve paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that’s not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a killing, and I kinda feel bad that I haven’t started at all, know what I mean. You’ve done so many great investing episodes, I’m curious if there’s an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You’re awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. The Receipe To Finally Succeed at Budgeting
Alright, raise your hand if you’ve tried budgeting, you’ve tried all the apps, and for whatever reason, you’ve decided that something must be wrong with you because it doesn’t work. Well, my friend, you aren’t alone. I too have tried my share of budgeting apps only to get frustrated at the process because I know that most traditional budgeting programs and apps are missing the golden key you need to actually be successful. They are all missing the psychology piece - aka a deeper dive into your thoughts, feelings, habits, beliefs, childhood money stories and so much more. I like to call it the gunk that actually matters when you’re trying to better your money situation. Well, I’m not alone. Our guest, Dani Pascarella is a Certified Financial Planner who previously worked on Wall Street and decided that she was fed up with traditional budgeting and decided to start OneEleven and create a budgeting app that focuses on the psychology of money. We talk about why money is the #1 cause of stress, why traditional budgeting is broken, steps you can take to ensure you achieve your money goals, and so much more. Let’s start talkin’ money. Shannah Shares: 7 Ways to Stay Focused On Your Money Goals
Shannah Shares: 7 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Money Goals In this Shannah Shares, Community Q&A vault episode, I'm sharing the 7 tips to help you stay focused on your money goals inspired by a question from Amanda: "I love your podcast and have been listening for over a year now being inspired and working towards my goals. Maybe my question isn't really a question, but more like a request for a pep talk. I have 4 main money goals that I've been slowly working towards Paying off my student loans, saving 4 months of expenses in my emergency fund, and saving $3,000 in what I like to call an "oh shit fund" (I can access this savings account much quicker than my emergency fund), and finally saving for a house. For the past 6 years, I've been laser-focused on paying off my student loans, but because of the pandemic, I decided to shift my focus on hitting my emergency fund goal. Recently, however, I've been struggling with staying focused on achieving the emergency fund goal. I now have only $9,000 left to go on my student loans and I'm also only 3 months away from hitting my emergency fund goal, but now I'm getting the urge to use basically all of my emergency fund money to pay off my student loans now. I know if I did this, I would feel AWESOME but know I would feel anxious knowing I had no emergency fund to fall back on. Do you have any suggestions for staying focused on one goal before making a rash decision and jumping to another goal? I know these are all good problems to have, but I would really love some words of encouragement or advice on how to stay focused on my current goal. How to Become a Fiscal Feminist & Take Charge of Your Money
Women have been largely overlooked in money conversations and you know the stats, we earn less, live longer, and so much more. We definitely get the short end of the equality stick a lot. So it’s even more important, no, make that critical, that we as women learn how to have fiscal freedom. As our guest, Kimberlee Davis says, “ a lot of women don’t know what the heck is going on with their finances and don’t like to talk about it.” In Kimberlee’s new book, “The Fiscal Feminist”, she shares the must-know money lessons that every woman needs to know and holds her hand through some serious topics like divorce, prenups and postnups, and all those money topics that you’d rather hide from. Her message is that you need to become the CEO of your life. Join us for this inspiring episode that feels like a fun information overload, in the best way possible, and a wild ride with Kimberlee. Why You Should Crockpot Your Savings & Skip the Microwave
We're featuring one of my favorite vault episodes from 2018 that was a listener favorite. I hope you enjoy it! All personal finance experts can agree on one thing – starting to save early will almost always help you reach your lifestyle goals quicker and with more ease than those who wait longer. When you think about your savings there are two ways you can save – the crockpot style or the microwave style. Inspired by a recent industry article in Financial Planning Magazine, thinking about a crockpot for your savings strategy makes pretty good sense. With any crockpot recipe, the idea is simple. You gather all your ingredients ahead of time, throw them into the crockpot, turn it on low and slow for 6-8 hours, and then you have an almost always perfect meal sure to wow anyone. What You'll Learn We’ll chat about the crockpot method of savings Why a crockpot method might make more sense than microwaving your savings Focus on saving little by little over time with consistency so whenever you reach the age you would like to quit working, your investments and savings have spent some time “cooking together.” Let’s talk about what you can and can’t control with your savings Some guidelines to always keep in mind with savings Links Mentioned: 401(k) Calculator How Much to Save for Retirement Investor Questionnaire Risk Tolerance Profile (just pretend it’s in USD) Episode Sponsors Thanks to Chime for sponsoring the show. Franchising 101: Everything You Need to Know to Invest in a Franchise
Have you ever been curious about franchising? There smart ways to invest in a franchise, you just need to know how to find the right one. I’ve been super excited about this episode because, believe it or not, in 875 episodes I’ve never talked about franchising. I have to admit, I had some preconceived notions about franchising, but I’m happy to say that they were blown out of the water after this conversation. For the past 20 years, Kim Daly has been helping people realize their dreams of business ownership through franchising - and I’m not just talking about all those fast food chains you drive by every day. The franchising business goes way deeper and Kim’s job is to help you figure out what franchise aligns with your life goals. This episode is an inspiring story that could help you build wealth and achieve your dreams in a business model that my guess is you might not have explored before. As I always say, everything with money deserves a listen and then you have the info to figure out whether it’s a fit for you. How to Become a Financial Grownup
What would it feel like to be a financial grownup? I share a bit more in the episode, but I grew up in a family where we openly talked about stock investments, wealth, and growing your money, even from an early age. However, I missed some important lessons around saving money, how to deal with debt, and honestly realistic expectations of how much money you make post-college. I did what you probably did, just figure it all out. However, I know you want more for yourself and for your kids…or future kids. You may recognize Bobbi Rebell’s name from previous episodes. She’s a Certified Financial Planner and is the author of Launching Financial Grownups: Live Your Riches Life By Helping Your (Almost) Adult Kids Become Everyday Money Smart. She’s also a fellow podcaster with her show Money Tips for Financial Grownups. Shannah Shares: Are These 5 Investing Taboos Keeping You Stuck?
Are these 5 investing taboos keeping you stuck? In Today's Shannah Shares, Community Q&A reboot episode, I tackle a question from Laquesha: "Hi Shannah. My boyfriend can’t believe I care this much about my money, but I just tell him, yes, yes I do and so should you. Ok, thanks again." Why You Need to Invest Differently to Reach Financial Freedom
The world of investing has largely been monopolized by companies that offer an outdated way of investing. Most investment companies don’t offer community amongst members or any type of education to help you. Enter Eve Halimi and Anam Lakhani, two 25-year-old phenoms who are also the Co-Founders of Alinea. Alinea is an investing community that helps its investors take a look under the hood to meet the people behind the company, aligning their investor’s impact interests and personal values with their investments. Eve and Anam are sharing how to invest in this new era, including why social sharing is so key when it comes to investing. Eve and Anam detail in this episode their journey to creating Alinea and how they are taking on the big boys like Robinhood and other old-school investment firms to provide you a better investing community. That’s right, I said community, and these powerhouse women mean it. Oh, and BTW, they are seriously smart when it comes to knowing how to invest wisely. I’ll let them take it from here. Revenge Spending: Is Your Splurge Worth It?
Alright, who has been guilty of a little revenge spending this year? I know I have. That dopamine hit is a real thing when it comes to spending. However, is that a good thing for our bank accounts, but maybe helps a little with our mental health? As our guest, Dr. Jaime Peters, Assistant Dean and Professor of Accounting, Finance, and Economics at Maryville University says, “if you’ve saved up and you want to buy something great, but the problem is when you start stretching yourself to spend just to feel good again.” In this episode, Jaime shares what revenge spending is, how you can balance spending with achieving your money goals, and what you need to think about if we are headed for a recession this year. Shannah Shares: How to Save For the Big Stuff
In this special vualt episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A, I'm sharing how to prioritize your savings goals for the big stuff. Today’s Community question comes from Robbie: "Hi there, Shannah, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question and for all the great money content. I’m seriously learning so much. I wish I would’ve had this podcast when I was in college. I’m in my mid 30’s now and I just feel like I’m playing catch up all the time. I make good money and between my partner and me around $300K a year. We live in Chicago though and it can be pretty expensive. We’ve got some goals we’re trying to save for - a wedding, a home purchase, and a big honeymoon trip. The problem is that we save money and then we tend to blow it on things that aren’t so important or need it for emergencies or just dump stuff. Can you help us figure out how to prioritize our money goals seeing as we want to save for big stuff? I feel like I could use a little of your tough love to get us on the right track. Every article I read just says to spend less and that isn’t really helpful. Thanks again and I hope you never stop this podcast because I would be so lost money-wise." Money 101: How to Track Your Cash & Why It Matters
I’m so excited about these new money 101 episodes. Over the course of the next few months, I’ll be breaking down some topics like how to pay off debt, ways to easily start investing, how to improve your credit score, and so much more. This episode is dedicated to the much-hated and universally loathed budget. As you can tell, I’m not a fan too. That’s because I believe that budgeting was never taught properly to you, so the fact that you hate budgeting isn’t your fault. It’s like a system that was set up to fail, so if you’ve never felt like you could do budgeting correctly or the numbers never work out, not to worry at all. In this episode, I give you permission to ditch your budget and instead learn the power of tracking your cash. Shannah Shares: Are Rewards Credit Cards Worth It
This episode was inspired by a question from Bri: "Thank you for being the FIRST person to support me through my financial journey as an adult. I’m currently healing from many different emotions surrounding money. My question for you is about credit cards with perks. I got a few cards totaling 4,000 that I’m paying down but I didn’t realize I was doing a disservice to myself by not utilizing cards with perks (travel, rewards). Should I be moving toward paying off and closing 2/3 of those cards or pay off/down and try to add those smarter cards to my life? Thanks again for all you do, you’ve changed my life for the better. What Are NFTs, How Do They Work, & Should You Invest In Them
What are NFTs and are they really an investment? I’ve been looking forward to this episode for quite some time because I’ve got a lot of NFT questions. It feels like all I’m reading these days is more about NFT hacks and losses so I was curious to know everything - what are NFTs, how do you create one, and are NFTs actually investments that you should spend your money on. Also, I’m a bit curious if NFTs are just another passing fad or here to stay. I knew just who to talk to. Stephen Young is the Founder and CEO of NFTfi, a company that allows NFT owners to use the asset you own to access liquidity, aka cash. As Stephen says in our conversation, “NFTs are simply memes you can invest in.” I think we need to know a lot more about NFTs, so let’s get talkin’.
