Civil Society Groups say the first presidential summit has failed to make a difference
The second Presidential Summit on Gender Based Violence and Femicide starts today in Midrand. The summit was in response to the 24 demands submitted by the #TheTotalShutdown Intersectional Women's Movement to President Cyril Ramaphosa following 27 nationwide marches on 1 August 2018. Organisations that are at the frontline of the battle against Gender Based Violence and Femicide, say the first presidential summit that was held in a bid to dent the scourge, has failed to make a difference. They hope that the second summit will deliver reforms that will compel the criminal justice system to prioritise justice for victims. This as many victims still claim that they are being failed by the police and the judiciary. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Mandisa Khanyile of Rise Up against gender based violence

Film and Publication Board issues legal notice for SA service providers to comply with Film and Publications Act
The Film and Publication Board has issued a legal notice on South Africa's Internet service providers demanding that they comply with amendments to the Film and Publications Act. The legal notices require these service providers to report on measures they have taken to tackle the spreading of child sexual abuse material and 'other online harms' on their platforms and services. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to acting regulatory development and enforcement executive at the Film and Publication Board, Pandelis Gregoriou on a brief summary of these amendments

Inter-Ministerial Committee on GBV Chairperson says numerous life sentences handed down for crimes committed against women and children.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Chairperson, Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, says this year alone, numerous life sentences were handed down for crimes committed against women and children. Nkoana-Mashabane was briefing the media on the eve of the Second Presidential GBVF Summit which takes place tomorrow and Wednesday, at Gallagher Estate, Midrand. She says government has made great strides to Gazette the National Council on Gender Based Violence and Femicide.

Residents win fight to be refunded unlawfully charged property rates
Earlier this month , the Pretoria High Court ordered the city of Tshwane to refund thousands of ratepayers monies owed to them after the city charged higher tariffs and increased bills without notification. A group of residents won their fight to be refunded unlawfully charged property rates dating back to 2011. Some owners say they were shocked in September of 2012 when their monthly rates bills increased by about 700%. The court order comes as the metro is battling a severe liquidity crisis. Public sector workers begin countrywide pickets amid wage negotiation deadlock
Tensions between Public Service Unions and government continue to rise as unions embark on countrywide mass pickets. The unions are demonstrating their frustration at government's unilateral decision to offer workers a 3 percent salary increase. This follows the collapse of wage negotiations last week as Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stuck to his guns in his Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement stating that government's current offer is in the best interest of both the fiscus and workers. There are about more than 1 million prisoners accross the african continent allegedly living under inhumane, cruel and degrading conditions. Various African law and justice leaders and human rights organizations accross the continent believe that it is time to rethink crimes law and incarceration on the african continent. The various african leaders converged in Sandton this week to discuss possible solutions faced in the correctional and justice system on the continent. Deputy Minister of Justice, John Jeffrey says the criminal justice system favours the rich, and this is evident if one looks at which people are in prisons; the poor - Jeffrey says we are NOT all equal before the law.
