Ep 136The Meaning of Memorial Day
The Meaning and Origins of Memorial Day Hey everyone, welcome back to the Discover Montcalm Podcast. I’m your host, and today I want to take a moment to reflect on something truly meaningful: Memorial Day—what it is, where it came from, and why it still matters. Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend, a barbecue, or the unofficial start of summer. At its heart, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance—a time when we as a nation pause to honor the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country. The origins of Memorial Day go back to the aftermath of the Civil War, which, as we know, was one of the bloodiest conflicts in American history. Communities across the country began holding springtime tributes to fallen soldiers—decorating their graves with flowers and flags. These early events were often called “Decoration Day.” Memorial Day The first widespread observance is often credited to a ceremony held on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where General James A. Garfield gave a speech and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of over 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Over time, the day evolved. After World War I, Memorial Day expanded to honor all Americans who died in military service—not just those lost in the Civil War. In 1971, it officially became a federal holiday, and Congress moved its observance to the last Monday in May, giving us the three-day weekend many of us now associate with the holiday. But here’s the thing—Memorial Day isn’t about celebration, it’s about remembrance. It’s about gratitude. It’s about honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who never came home. So as we enjoy the warm weather, gather with friends and family, or attend a local parade or ceremony here in Montcalm County, let’s take a moment—just a moment—to remember those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy today. From everyone here at the Discover Montcalm Podcast, we say thank you to those who served, and especially to those who sacrificed their lives. Your legacy lives on. Ep 134Protect our Produce episode 134
Protect our Produce-Michigan’s Produce Industry Is in Trouble — Here’s Why You Should Care Episode 134 of the Discover Montcalm Podcast welcomes Jamie Clover Adams from ProtectOurProduce.com, and she’s sounding the alarm: Michigan’s $6 billion fresh produce industry is in real danger. Host and producer Duane Weed dives into this critical conversation with Jamie, who breaks down how outdated federal wage policies are squeezing the life out of local farms. The Adverse Effect Wage Rate (AEWR), a federally mandated wage system for H-2A guestworkers, has skyrocketed over the last decade—up more than 50%! That unpredictability is forcing farmers to make hard decisions, and in many cases, walk away from growing the produce that’s been part of Michigan’s identity for generations. A Crisis in Numbers To put things in perspective, since AEWR took hold, 16,000 acres of fruits and vegetables have been lost in Michigan—that’s about 11,765 football fields. Why? Because labor costs have become unsustainable. Michigan produce farms: Labor costs = up to 55% Auto industry: Labor costs = ~7% Restaurants: Labor costs = ~32% Jamie explains that growers simply can’t keep up when they’re competing against lower-priced imports and unpredictable wage hikes. Protect our Produce Real Voices, Real Impact This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about families, legacy, and our food system. In the episode, Jamie shares quotes from Michigan farmers facing heartbreaking choices: “We have not replanted asparagus on our farm for three years now… Labor has created an issue whether we’re going to continue down this road.”— Bill Schwass, Springdale Farms, Scottville, MI “As a father… you really struggle if it’s sustainable long term for [your kids].”— Mike Wittenbach, Wittenbach Orchards, Belding, MI What’s at Stake for Michigan? This isn’t just a farming issue — it’s an economic and community issue. Michigan’s fruit and vegetable industry supports 40,000 jobs and provides over $350 million in annual payrolls. That means real money going back into our local communities. Protect our Produce – How You Can Help Want to make a difference? Ep 124Buy Local, Build Community
Buy Local, Build Community-The Power of Supporting Local Businesses episode 124 Today, we’re diving into a topic that directly impacts all of us—buying local. Now, I get it. Big-box stores and online shopping are super convenient. You can order something at midnight in your pajamas and have it on your doorstep in two days. But here’s the thing—when you spend your dollars locally, you’re not just making a purchase, you’re making a difference. Check out this video! Why Buy Local Does Not Work 100% of the Time? We have just talked about why buying local is so important—but let’s be real, no county can be 100% local. And that’s okay! Think about it—where does your gas come from? Your cell phone? That laptop or TV? There are just some things that aren’t made locally because we don’t have the industries to produce them. And that’s true for every small community, not just Montcalm. Buy Local – Outside Resources Even our amazing local businesses rely on outside sources. Your favorite coffee shop? They probably get their beans from South America. That local boutique? Some of their materials might come from across the country. And even our farmers, as self-sufficient as they are, might need tools, feed, or equipment that aren’t produced nearby. So, does that mean buying local doesn’t matter? Absolutely not! It just means we need to be realistic about what can and can’t be sourced here. The key is to support local businesses whenever possible, so more of our money stays right here, fueling our economy, creating jobs, and keeping Montcalm County thriving. Buy Local Challenge So here’s a thought—next time you need something, ask yourself: Can I buy this locally? If the answer is yes, go for it! Hand those videotapes to me to transfer, not shipping across the country to have it done. Follow Discover Montcalm Podcast for more community stories that matter. Ep 122Continuous Miracle WGLM 106.3FM
Continuous Miracle WGLM 106.3FM Welcome back to another inspiring episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast! In Episode 122, we dive into the journey of recovery and hope with Mike White, the voice behind the new program Continuous Miracle, airing Sunday mornings from 11 AM to noon on WGLM 106.3FM. What is Continuous Miracle? Continuous Miracle WGLM 106.3FM is more than just a radio show—it’s a conversation about sobriety, personal transformation, and the journey toward recovery. Hosted by Mike White, a longtime Greenville resident who has been in recovery for nearly nine years, this program offers real stories of people overcoming addiction, featuring a wide range of perspectives, including doctors, therapists, community members, and those in recovery themselves. The Heart of the Continuous Miracle Show Mike’s personal experience and involvement with the Montcalm Alano Club (MAC) in Greenville give him unique insight into the struggles and triumphs of people in recovery. Through this show, he and his co-host, Scott, aim to: Educate the public about addiction and recovery. Reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. Offer hope to those battling substance use disorders. One of the key messages of Continuous Miracle is that recovery takes a community. The show highlights not only medical professionals but also counselors, AA sponsors, and even individuals who never thought they had an issue—until one moment changed everything. Check them out at https://montcalmalanoclub.com/ Check out this video! A Personal Journey Mike’s path to recovery was not linear. After losing his life partner, he found himself at a crossroads. With the encouragement (or as he says, being “voluntold”) by his AA sponsor, he became more involved with local recovery efforts. His work with MAC and Ferris State University led him to discover the vast resources available in the Montcalm area and beyond. “You either get here through the liver, the law, or love,” Mike shares—a saying in AA that captures the various ways people find their way to recovery. Whether it’s health issues, legal troubles, or loved ones reaching their breaking point, the road to sobriety is deeply personal and different for everyone. Addiction is More Than a Habit During the episode, Mike and Kara discuss the complexities of addiction. From alcohol to gambling, food, or other substances, addiction is often misunderstood. “It’s not just about willpower,” Mike explains. “It’s about rewiring habits, learning new coping mechanisms, and finding a community that supports healing.” Through Continuous Miracle, listeners will hear about: The science behind addiction and recovery. Real-life stories of people who turned their lives around. Resources available in Montcalm County and beyond. The role of therapy, 12-step programs, and faith in recovery. Why The Continuous Miracle show on WGLM 106.3FM Matters There are many misconceptions about addiction, and stigma often prevents people from seeking help. By bringing in voices from different backgrounds—medical, legal, spiritual, and personal—Continuous Miracle aims to break down barriers and encourage open discussions. As Mike emphasizes, “Addiction is a disease, not a moral failing. And like any disease, there’s a treatment.” Recovery is a continuous process, and with the right support system, anyone can reclaim their life. Julie Stafford Daily News ep 112
Julie Stafford, From the Greenville Daily News to Peaceful Valley Farms episode 111 Julie Stafford, formerly from the Daily News and now with Peaceful Valley Farms, we cover the history of the Daily News and how owning a Lavender Farms is now Julie’s happy place. Journey through the fascinating history of journalism in Greenville, from its humble beginnings as a single-sheet news source in the 1800s. Explore the remarkable media history of how this publication evolved into the Greenville Daily News, demonstrating the power of daily news analysis in keeping communities informed. This story shows the future of media has deep roots in dedicated local journalism that serves its readership. #LocalNews #MediaEvolution #communityjournalism Check out this video! A Chronicle of Community: The History of Greenville, Michigan’s Newspaper In the heart of Montcalm County, Greenville has been home to a rich tradition of local journalism, embodied by a newspaper that evolved alongside the town itself. Beginning humbly in the 1800s, Greenville’s newspaper started as a simple one-sheet publication, distributed only when major news called for it. Over the decades, this fledgling operation transformed into the thriving Greenville Daily News, an enduring institution that has served as the voice of the community for generations. From Humble Beginnings: The Birth of Local News Julie Stafford, whose family became central to the paper’s legacy, believes it began as The Independence. This one-sheet newspaper, later renamed The Greenville Independence, focused on spreading significant news at a time when communication was limited. In an era before radio or television, the paper was a vital thread connecting Greenville’s residents to one another and to the wider world. As the town grew, so did the publication, gradually increasing its reach and frequency. By the late 19th century, the paper had become a staple of daily life, evolving into a consistent source of information, advertisements, and local stories. A New Era: The Stafford Family Legacy The modern history of The Greenville Daily News began in 1951 when Julie Stafford’s grandfather took over as managing editor. A man with vision and entrepreneurial spirit, he revolutionized the paper by introducing the town’s first commercial printing press. This innovation allowed the paper to print not just for itself but for businesses across the eastern United States, cementing Greenville’s place on the map as a hub for high-quality printing services. During this time, the paper flourished, reflecting both the town’s growth and the importance of hyper-local journalism. Under his leadership, the paper captured Greenville’s milestones—from economic developments to social events—and helped document the town’s identity. Growth Through Generations In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Julie’s father joined the paper, carrying forward the legacy. His leadership brought modernization and stability to the publication, ensuring it remained the go-to source of information for Greenville residents. Through economic booms and challenges, the newspaper chronicled the lives of its readers, providing a mirror to the community it served. The family legacy continued into the early 2000s when Rob Stafford, Julie’s older brother, became involved. Rob’s work ensured the paper adapted to an increasingly digital landscape while maintaining its focus on local stories and its commitment to high journalistic standards. In 2012, Julie Stafford took the helm, becoming the steward of her family’s and the newspaper’s legacy. Her leadership focused on preserving the paper’s deep ties to the community while embracing the challenges of modern journalism. Under her guidance, the paper balanced the demands of print and digital publishing, ensuring it remained relevant to readers of all generations. The Importance of a Local Newspaper Throughout its history, The Greenville Daily News has been more than just a publication—it has been a lifeline for the community. Local newspapers play a unique and vital role in small towns, providing: Connection: Sharing stories of local businesses, school events, festivals, and everyday triumphs creates a sense of unity and pride. Accountability: Local papers hold governments, businesses, and community leaders accountable, ensuring transparency and fairness. Preservation of History: Newspapers serve as an archive of a town’s story, preserving the moments that define its identity for future generations. Empowerment: Through coverage of challenges and achievements, local newspapers empower communities to work together toward shared goals. In an age when many local newspapers have struggled to survive, the resilience of The Greenville Daily News stands as a testament to its importance. It remains a trusted source of information, a chronicler of history, and a voice for the people of Greenville. A Legacy of Community As The Greenville Daily News continues to serve Montcalm

Ep 102Fighting Falcon 20 years ep 102
Fighting Falcon Military Museum celebrates 20 years In the 102nd episode of Discover Montcalm, we revisit The Fighting Falcon Military Museum, a landmark in Greenville, Michigan, that pays tribute to the town’s unique WWII history. Back in Episode 2, host Duane Weed interviewed the late Bill Delp, who shared stories about the iconic glider—known as the Fighting Falcon—built in Greenville during the war and its significant role in military history. Bill Delp passed away in 2022, but his passion for the museum lives on. Now, 20 years after the museum’s opening, board member Bill Garlick joins Duane to talk about the museum’s recent developments, upcoming plans, and how they continue to honor the glider’s legacy. This episode not only dives into the past but also sheds light on the importance of preserving local history for future generations. For more information check out https://www.thefightingfalcon.com/ website. Listeners are encouraged to share their own stories. Whether you’re a business, community leader, or resident, your narrative matters. Reach out to host and producer Duane Weed at 231-250-9624 to book your interview today and be a part of Discover Montcalm. Check out this video! Fighting Falcon History The Fighting Falcon Museum in Greenville, Michigan, was established to preserve the unique history of the town’s involvement in World War II, specifically through the production of the WACO CG-4A glider, known as the Fighting Falcon. During the war, the Gibson Refrigerator Company in Greenville shifted its production from refrigerators to military gliders, which played a pivotal role in airborne operations. These unpowered aircraft were used to silently transport troops and supplies behind enemy lines. Greenville produced more than 1,000 gliders for the war effort, making it an essential contributor to the U.S. military’s success. The museum, which celebrates its 20th year, not only honors this remarkable chapter in Greenville’s industrial and military history but also serves as a broader tribute to veterans and military service. With displays of military memorabilia, including items from local veterans, the museum offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage. Since opening, the museum has expanded its collection and now features an original Fighting Falcon glider on display, allowing visitors to connect with the town’s wartime legacy. The Fighting Falcon Museum remains a vital part of the community, dedicated to educating future generations about Greenville’s contributions to national history. Cheese making in Montcalm County
Cheese making in Montcalm County episode 93 Farm Country Cheese House, located in the charming town of Lakeview, Michigan, is a celebrated local establishment known for its high-quality, handcrafted cheeses. Since its founding in 1984, Farm Country Cheese House has built a reputation for excellence by using fresh, hormone-free milk sourced from local Amish farms. This commitment to quality and tradition is evident in their diverse range of cheeses, from creamy, mild varieties to sharp, aged delights. https://farmcountrycheese.com Check out this video! The Basics of How Cheese is Made Cheese-making is a fascinating process that transforms milk into a wide variety of delicious cheeses. Here are the basic steps involved: 1. Milk Selection and Preparation The cheese-making process begins with fresh milk, which can come from cows, goats, sheep, or other mammals. The quality and type of milk play a significant role in the flavor and texture of the final product. The milk is often pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria, although some traditional cheeses use raw milk. 2. Acidification Next, the milk is acidified. This is usually done by adding bacterial cultures (starter cultures) to the milk. These cultures convert lactose, the sugar in milk, into lactic acid. This step helps to develop the cheese’s flavor and aids in the coagulation process. 3. Coagulation Once the milk has acidified, rennet is added to coagulate it. Rennet contains enzymes that cause the milk proteins (casein) to coagulate, forming a gel-like consistency. The milk separates into solid curds and liquid whey. 4. Cutting the Curds The curds are then cut into smaller pieces to allow more whey to be released. The size of the curds affects the moisture content of the cheese; smaller curds result in a harder cheese, while larger curds result in a softer cheese. 5. Cooking and Stirring The curds are gently heated and stirred. This process helps to further expel whey from the curds. The temperature and duration of this step vary depending on the type of cheese being made. 6. Draining the Whey After cooking, the whey is drained off, leaving behind the curds. The curds may be placed in molds to shape the cheese, and the remaining whey is pressed out. 7. Salting Salting is an important step for flavor, preservation, and texture. Salt can be added directly to the curds, or the formed cheese can be soaked in a brine solution. 8. Shaping and Pressing The curds are placed into molds to give the cheese its final shape. They may be pressed to expel any remaining whey and to help the curds knit together into a solid mass. The amount of pressure and duration depend on the type of cheese. 9. Aging (Affinage) The final step is aging, or affinage. The cheese is stored in a controlled environment where it matures and develops its flavor and texture. The duration of aging can range from a few days to several years, depending on the type of cheese. Additional Steps for Specific Cheeses Some cheeses undergo additional processes such as: Washing: Some cheeses are washed with brine, beer, wine, or other liquids to develop a specific rind and flavor. Molding: Blue cheeses have molds introduced to create their distinctive blue veins. Stretching: Pasta filata cheeses like mozzarella are stretched and kneaded to develop their texture. Conclusion Cheese-making is both a science and an art, with each step carefully controlled to produce the desired characteristics. From the selection of milk to the aging process, every stage influences the flavor, texture, and appearance of the final cheese.
