Fighting Falcon Military Museum celebrates 20 years In the 102nd episode of Discover Montcalm, we revisit The Fighting Falcon Military Museum, a landmark in Greenville, Michigan, that pays tribute to the town’s unique WWII history. Fighting Falcon History The Fighting Falcon Museum in Greenville, Michigan, was established to preserve the unique history of the town’s involvement in World War II, specifically through the production of the WACO CG-4A glider, known as the Fighting Falcon. During the war, the Gibson Refrigerator Company in Greenville shifted its production from refrigerators to military gliders, which played a pivotal role in airborne operations. These unpowered aircraft were used to silently transport troops and supplies behind enemy lines. Greenville produced more than 1,000 gliders for the war effort, making it an essential contributor to the U.S. military’s success. The museum, which celebrates its 20th year, not only honors this remarkable chapter in Greenville’s industrial and military history but also serves as a broader tribute to veterans and military service. With displays of military memorabilia, including items from local veterans, the museum offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage. Since opening, the museum has expanded its collection and now features an original Fighting Falcon glider on display, allowing visitors to connect with the town’s wartime legacy. In 2011 he started at the Daily News where he is a senior staff writer and photographer, Cory combines his love for words and images to capture the essence of the community that he calls home. Ravell Centennial Farm-The Barn’s Storied Past Built in 1917 by George’s grandfather and nephew, the barn initially served as a place to house animals and store hay. Over the decades, it evolved, becoming an auto body shop and the birthplace of Universal Magnetics in the late 1970s. He was born May 21, 1938, in Buffalo, NY, the son of Oliver Friend Ravell and Dorothy Cleo (Baisch), and raised by his grandparents, Henry and Amanda Baisch, on the family farm. In 1956, George married the former Janet Hackbardt with whom he shared 64 years of devoted marriage until her passing on December 19, 2020. George proudly served his country for four years as an electronics specialist in the United States Airforce, where he achieved the rank of Airman Second Class. After his service, he pursued a career as a business owner and entrepreneur with a passion for magnetics and rental property management. A man of many talents, George loved traveling, singing in the Schubert Male Chorus, and participating in the choir at Bethel Lutheran Church. He treasured spending time with family and friends. As an active and dedicated member of Bethel Lutheran Church, George lived out his faith and will be remembered for ministering to and mentoring countless young men within his community. George is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Janet Ravell; and his daughters, Dorothy Ravell and Eileen Ravell. Cheese making in Montcalm County episode 93 Farm Country Cheese House, located in the charming town of Lakeview, Michigan, is a celebrated local establishment known for its high-quality, handcrafted cheeses. Since its founding in 1984, Farm Country Cheese House has built a reputation for excellence by using fresh, hormone-free milk sourced from local Amish farms. The Basics of How Cheese is Made Cheese-making is a fascinating process that transforms milk into a wide variety of delicious cheeses. Here are the basic steps involved: 1. Milk Selection and Preparation The cheese-making process begins with fresh milk, which can come from cows, goats, sheep, or other mammals. The quality and type of milk play a significant role in the flavor and texture of the final product. The milk is often pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria, although some traditional cheeses use raw milk. 2. Acidification Next, the milk is acidified. Singing Together in Montcalm County Valerie VanderMark’s Musical Journey Singing Together in Montcalm County, Valerie VanderMark has been building up Montcalm County’s arts scene through her lifelong dedication to the performing arts. With a passion that has fueled her throughout her career, Valerie’s journey is intertwined with the melodies and harmonies that have enriched the community. Valerie’s love for the performing arts blossomed early on, leading her to pursue a career path that would allow her to share her passion with others. Meeting her husband Greg while performing in a play was a serendipitous moment that added another layer of joy to her journey. With an impressive tenure of thirty-four years as the Performing Arts Coordinator at Montcalm Community College, Valerie has left an indelible mark on the local arts community. Prior to her time at MCC, she shared her knowledge and enthusiasm for music as a teacher in both Greenville Public Schools and Central Montcalm Public Schools. Valerie’s impact as an educator is evident in the glowing reviews from her students. Her enthusiasm is infectious, igniting a spark in her students that fuels their passion for music and performance. Even in her retirement, Valerie continues to be an active participant in the arts community. She lends her talents to the MCC Alumni & Friends Choir, serving as their director and guiding the choir members in creating beautiful music together. Backwoods Sugar Shack with Cody Rockafellow episode 80 The Backwoods Sugar Shack was started in 2016 by Cody Rockafellow from Six Lakes Michigan. However, Cody and his family have been making syrup since 2008 tapping about 330 trees. After Cody graduated from high school, he decided that this was his passion, and has grown the business to what it is today. Follow them at https://www.facebook.com/backwoodssugarshack Backwoods Sugar Shack Taps the Backwoods Sugar Shack has over 4000 trees with the potential to tap another 4000+. The most common question is “How much sap does it take to make a gallon of syrup”. The answer depends on the sugar content of the sap. It takes about 45-48 gallons of sap for 1 gallon of syrup. It is definitely a labor intensive process but making something that everyone enjoys is worth all the hard work. https://www.backwoodssugarshack.com/ Watch this episode: Michigan Made Maple Syrup At the Backwoods Sugar Shack nestled in Six Lakes, Michigan, the process of making Michigan-made maple syrup is a time-honored tradition, deeply rooted in the region’s rich natural resources and community spirit. It all begins in late winter when the maple trees awaken from their winter slumber, signaling the start of the sugaring season. Cody, a skilled sugarmaker, ventures into the woods armed with traditional tools and modern equipment, ready to tap the majestic maple trees. With careful precision, he and his crew drill small holes into the tree trunks and insert spouts to collect the precious sap that flows slowly but steadily. The sap is then transported through a network of tubing or collected in buckets, depending on the land owner’s request. Back at the sugar shack, the sap undergoes a meticulous process of evaporation to transform it into the golden nectar known as maple syrup. In large evaporator pans, the sap is heated over a wood-fired modern evaporator, gradually reducing its volume and concentrating its sugars. Cody monitors the process attentively, ensuring that the syrup reaches the perfect consistency and flavor profile. Once the syrup reaches the desired density, it is carefully filtered to remove any impurities, resulting in the pure, amber liquid that is emblematic of Michigan maple syrup. Finally, the syrup is bottled and labeled by hand, ready to be shared with the local community and beyond. Each bottle of Backwoods Sugar Shack maple syrup is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of Cody and his team, as well as the unique terroir of Six Lakes, Michigan. Ole Amble was a pioneer preacher of the 1800s and early 1900s, who planted and pastored up to seven churches at the same time with more than 1,000 members throughout Montcalm County, Michigan. As a Norwegian immigrant, he became the spiritual leader of the region’s Scandinavian communities. Hauck Over the past 40 years, I had the privilege of holding positions that have given me a fairly broad understanding of leadership, organizational behavior, strategic planning, human relations, creativity, and critical thinking. With a primary focus on higher education, I have served as department chair, division chair, college chair, assistant academic dean, director of academic affairs, and dean of arts and sciences. Today, I am the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Montcalm Community College. I have also served as an officer in several professional organizations on the local, state, and national levels, and as a military chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves. With a heavy interest in globalization and international studies, I have taught college courses on location at the University of Shen Zhen (China), China Baptist Theological College (Hong Kong), the University of St. Petersburg (Russia), St. Petersburg Christian University (Russia), and the Arriba Institute (Ecuador). I have participated in archeological digs in the Middle East, and have led or participated in international field trips to 70 countries. I have published nineteen books, including Exploring Humanities Around the World, and Organizational Transformation in Higher Education. In addition to teaching humanities and religions over the years (my passion), I have also taught courses in organizational behavior, leadership, and critical thinking for Central Michigan University, Siena Heights University, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and Spring Arbor University. In 2008, I became a dean at Montcalm Community College. In addition to supervising the arts and sciences faculty and classroom instruction at the college, I am also involved in the design, development and implementation of new courses and MCC’s study abroad program and cultural events.
