Watch this episode: Memorial Day Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. For our communities, it’s a time of deep reflection and gratitude. This day is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. All around our country, Memorial Day brings together neighbors, families, and friends to remember those who have served. Our towns are adorned with flags, and parades marching through our streets, filled with veterans, local bands, and community groups. It’s a time when we come together to show our respect and appreciation. Local cemeteries, like those in Greenville, Vestaberg, Carson City and Stanton, we see families placing flowers and flags on the graves of loved ones. These quiet moments of remembrance are reminders of the cost of our freedoms. Services held at these sites often include the playing of “Taps,” a solemn tribute that resonates deeply with all who hear it. Memorial Day also serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity of our communities. For many, it’s a day to listen to the stories of our veterans, learning from their experiences, and carring forward the values they fought to protect. It’s about community, remembrance, and gratitude. As we enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today, let’s take a moment to remember those who have given their lives to make it possible. It is definitely a labor intensive process but making something that everyone enjoys is worth all the hard work. https://www.backwoodssugarshack.com/ Watch this episode: Michigan Made Maple Syrup At the Backwoods Sugar Shack nestled in Six Lakes, Michigan, the process of making Michigan-made maple syrup is a time-honored tradition, deeply rooted in the region’s rich natural resources and community spirit. It all begins in late winter when the maple trees awaken from their winter slumber, signaling the start of the sugaring season. Cody, a skilled sugarmaker, ventures into the woods armed with traditional tools and modern equipment, ready to tap the majestic maple trees. With careful precision, he and his crew drill small holes into the tree trunks and insert spouts to collect the precious sap that flows slowly but steadily. The sap is then transported through a network of tubing or collected in buckets, depending on the land owner’s request. Back at the sugar shack, the sap undergoes a meticulous process of evaporation to transform it into the golden nectar known as maple syrup. In large evaporator pans, the sap is heated over a wood-fired modern evaporator, gradually reducing its volume and concentrating its sugars. Cody monitors the process attentively, ensuring that the syrup reaches the perfect consistency and flavor profile. Once the syrup reaches the desired density, it is carefully filtered to remove any impurities, resulting in the pure, amber liquid that is emblematic of Michigan maple syrup. Finally, the syrup is bottled and labeled by hand, ready to be shared with the local community and beyond. Each bottle of Backwoods Sugar Shack maple syrup is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of Cody and his team, as well as the unique terroir of Six Lakes, Michigan. It’s a labor of love that captures the essence of the Michigan maple syrup tradition, one sweet drop at a time. About Discover Montcalm Podcast Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by Duane Weed. Their open-air ambiance and presence at events contribute to their appeal, making food trucks a dynamic and cherished aspect of today’s society. Annual Food Truck Rally & Car and Craft Show Timothy C. Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library hosts the Annual Food Truck Rally & Craft Show with many food options from multiple food trucks. An outdoor craft show featuring local artists and crafters will be set up along the White Pine Trail. Parking provided by the Howard City Mason Lodge No. 329. Also included is a Used Book Sale hosted by the TCHRTL Friends of the Library, Car Show hosted by Frontline Towing & Recovery, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament hosted by Off-Season Sports Academy & Fitness 3 on 3 Basketball The origins of 3-on-3 basketball tournaments can be traced back to the grassroots and street basketball culture. As neighborhoods and communities embraced basketball as a popular sport, informal games with smaller teams naturally emerged. The condensed format of 3 players per side allowed for faster-paced, more dynamic matches that could be played on smaller courts. This format gained traction as an accessible way for people to engage in competitive basketball without the need for full teams or large facilities. Over time, organizers recognized the appeal of these smaller-scale games and began organizing official 3-on-3 tournaments, which eventually led to the establishment of structured leagues and events that catered to players of all skill levels. The simplicity, speed, and inclusivity of 3-on-3 basketball tournaments contributed to their enduring popularity and widespread adoption. The Howard City 3 on 3 started in 2020 and is a place to not only foster competition but also teach sportsmanship and make new friends. Craft Show in Howard City Including a craft show during this Howard City community event offers a unique and enriching experience for both artisans and the community. This event provides a platform for local artists and crafters to showcase their talents and creativity, fostering a vibrant creative economy. Attendees have the opportunity to discover one-of-a-kind, handmade products ranging from artwork and jewelry to home decor and clothing. The show encourages a sense of community pride, as it highlights the skills and traditions of the region. By supporting the local craft show, patrons contribute to the growth of small businesses, forge connections with makers, and bring home exceptional items with stories behind them. Richard Rush Sheridan-Stanton Family History episode 51

Richard Rush growing up around Sheridan and Stanton, shares his family history episode 51 Growing up in Sheridan and Stanton Michigan Richard Rush was born and raised just north of Sheridan and south of Stanton. His dad had a farm there called Rush and Sons Dairy. He started by putting the milk in canning jars and delivering it to Sheridan, Stanton, Crystal and Greenville. As they grew they began pasteurizing milk. They had our own cows and raised crops to feed them. Mutual support and collaboration In times gone by, the agricultural community thrived on a profound spirit of mutual support and collaboration among farmers. Back in the day, when technology was limited and resources were scarce, farmers would come together in a heartwarming display of camaraderie to assist one another during critical periods such as planting and harvesting seasons. Neighbors would gather to share their expertise, knowledge, and physical labor, transforming arduous tasks into communal celebrations. This tradition not only facilitated the completion of essential agricultural tasks but also fostered a deep sense of unity and interdependence among rural communities, leaving an enduring legacy of cooperation that continues to inspire today’s farming practices. His mom would later run and buy the Sheridan Café’. When Richard moved away his brother Alvin started a business call Rush Forestry. Alvin would do work all over the state and taught people how to do selective cutting, instead of clear cutting, so one would always have a forest to come back too. Implement Selective Cutting of Michigan Forest Selective cutting, also known as selective logging, involves the careful removal of specific trees within a forest while leaving the majority of the ecosystem intact. This method offers several advantages over clear-cutting, which involves the complete removal of all trees in an area. it is essential to note that select cutting requires careful planning, monitoring, and adherence to sustainable forestry practices to ensure its long-term effectiveness. Balancing human needs with ecological preservation remains a key consideration in managing forests for the well-being of both present and future generations. Upon being back in the area Richard has become familiar with the old Meijer north of Greenville and the Jesus Loves Store. Finding there is a purpose in life through a relationship with Jesus. Through the years his faith has grown and with what he was taught by his father and growing up in Montcalm County that we all cared and helped each other. Life in Montcalm County is a great place to discover. About Discover Montcalm Podcast Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by Duane Weed. Howard City 150th History with Rich and Cheryl Pease episode 47

Howard City 150th History with Rich and Cheryl Pease Howard City 150th History with Rich and Cheryl Pease. Durning the 2018 150th Year Celebration Duane caught up with Rich and Cheryl to learn more about Howard City. Howard City is a village located in Montcalm County, Michigan, in the United States. The area where Howard City is situated was originally inhabited by the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, drawn to the region by its timber and fertile soil. The village was named after Judge Jonathan Howard, who was instrumental in securing a railroad line that passed through the area.In 1868, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad established a station in the village, leading to increased settlement and economic growth. The railroad allowed for the transportation of timber, agricultural products, and passengers, contributing to the village’s development.Howard City was officially incorporated as a village in 1883. Throughout its early years, the village relied heavily on the lumber industry, with sawmills and other related businesses flourishing. The abundance of timber in the area played a significant role in the local economy. As the timber resources dwindled, the village transitioned into an agricultural community, with farming becoming a prominent industry. This shift helped sustain the local economy, and Howard City continued to grow as a rural community.Over time, the village has expanded its infrastructure, including the establishment of schools, churches, and various businesses to serve the needs of its residents. Today, Howard City remains a small but vibrant community, known for its friendly atmosphere and rural charm. About Discover Montcalm Podcast Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by Duane Weed. Reflect on Montcalm County – episode 46

Reflect on Montcalm County Welcome to the Discover Montcalm dot com podcast, where we’re going to reflect on Montcalm County, the communities, the businesses, the attractions, and the people that make up Montcalm County. Host and producer Duane Weed reflects on going back in time and looking at how people have started their businesses, how the communities have grown in their history. In episode six. Margaret Krebs came to the studio and talked to us about her 100 years of change. And, you know, one of the things that she was talking about was back when her mom was single and was a teacher where Burley Park is today. Her mom would take the train from Trufant to Burley Park, spend a week teaching, and then go back home to her parents house. Margaret wishes her mom would have seen a washer and dryer and indoor plumbing. When asked about what were some of the things that they did, you know, reflect back on her childhood or her younger years. And she talked about the Danish Brotherhood hall in Trufant and kind of what that building that group did to kind of keep the community together. “Well, I couldn’t go too far because we didn’t have automobiles. We spent time at the Danish Brotherhood Society hall, states Margaret. “We had dances and dancing at that time was very popular because that was something that didn’t cost much. You had a makeshift band to put on the music, you know, but the whole community came together on a Friday or Saturday night to get together and be social.” Back in episode two of the Discover Montcalm podcast, Duane asked Bill Garlick to come in from the Fighting Falcon Museum and tell us what is the Fighting Falcon Museum? Bill shares, “Well, the museum is quite an interesting place. It covers the military history of Greenville from the Civil War, all the way up through to the end of our modern conflict.” Bill Delp tells us “During the war Gibson in Greenville Michigan had a contract to make incendiary bombs, these incendiary bombs. Gibson wasn’t the only company making. And then there are several companies that manufactured them, Gibson made 750,000 of them for roughly $500,000. That was only $0.75 a piece.” which are pretty cheap warfare bombs. These small bombs were held in a canister of about 150, and it was held in the bomb bays of bombers. And when they were dropped out of the Bombay over their target, the canister exploded and blew these small incendiary bombs. It just scattered them in the sky.” Bill continues, “And when they hit the town, they were over where they’re bombing the target. Each one exploded. And of course, it started a fire. And the minute this happened, they obviously thought they had to put water on them. When they put water on them, then they really had a problem.” As we reflect back, Ralph Hauenstein was the Reynolds Township supervisor from 1970 to 2005, and in 2018 I had a chance to interview him for what was going to be part of a documentary on Montcalm County. When asked, what was the biggest growth during his time as a supervisor. “I felt as though the development of the whole township and the subdivisions that we had going and the different enforcements that we had protecting those had developed. And the value of the township had gone up millions of dollars from what it was when I took over, it was maybe 12 million or something like that, I think. And went up to 300 million” states Ralph. “You don’t necessarily see it just driving down the road, but if you look throughout Reynolds Township and some of the back roads and the subdivisions back there, there’s some beautiful, beautiful homes and it was very accessible from Grand Rapids. I think that’s one of the primary reasons that it developed so rapidly and we have such good development.” Reflecting on Montcalm County, the history, the events is why Discover Montcalm is here, to help keep this information alive and shared with the people. Why Buy Local in Montcalm County-episode 42

Why Buy Local in Montcalm County Why Buy local in Montcalm County? It is crucial for the overall well-being and development of our area to really focus on local. First off, the Economic Growth: When you buy from local businesses, a significant portion of the money stays within the community. Local businesses are more likely to reinvest their profits locally, which contributes to economic growth and job creation. This, in turn, leads to a stronger local economy and increased opportunities for residents. Buying local enhances Community Development: Local businesses are often deeply rooted in the community and are more invested in its growth and development. They are more likely to contribute to local charities, sponsor local events, and support other initiatives that enhance the community’s quality of life. By supporting local businesses, you contribute to the overall well-being and development of your community. Unique and Diverse Offerings: Local businesses often offer a unique range of products and services that reflect the local culture, heritage, and preferences. They bring diversity to the market and provide alternatives to the standardized offerings of larger chain stores. By supporting local businesses, you help preserve the local flavor and character of your community. Buying local provides Personal Connections and Relationships: Shopping at local businesses fosters personal connections and relationships within the community. Local business owners often know their customers by name, provide personalized services, and genuinely care about their patrons. This sense of community creates a more welcoming and friendly environment, which enhances the overall social fabric. Economic Stability: Relying heavily on large chain stores or external corporations can make a community vulnerable to economic downturns or external shocks. By supporting local businesses, you help diversify the local economy and create a more stable business environment. This diversification provides resilience and better equips the community to overcome economic challenges. For those around Montcalm County we remember when Elelctrolux moved out. Early On Services infants to 3 year old

Early On Services in Montcalm County Early On Services in Montcalm County aims to provide support to children from birth to age three who have developmental delays or disabilities or who are at risk of experiencing developmental difficulties. This program focuses on identifying and addressing potential challenges early on to promote the child’s healthy development and overall well-being. Through the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District Early On services are provided through collaborative efforts involving various agencies, organizations, and educational institutions. These programs may involve assessments, screenings, and evaluations to identify any developmental concerns in infants and toddlers. If delays or disabilities are detected, a team of professionals, including educators, therapists, and medical specialists, work together to design and implement an individualized plan for each child. The specific services offered by Early On programs can vary but often include early childhood education, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social-emotional support. These services may be delivered in various settings, including at their home, parks, or an area determined by the parents and the Early On team. The goal of early intervention programs is to provide children with the support they need during critical developmental stages, which can have a significant impact on their long-term outcomes. Additionally, these programs often involve family support and involvement, recognizing the important role that parents and caregivers play in a child’s development. Early On Services Early On offers early intervention services for infants and toddlers, birth to three years of age, with developmental delay(s) and/or disabilities, and their families. Research has shown that by addressing delays early on – especially between birth and age 3 – we can more effectively impact a child’s development, even into adulthood.
