The Jus Jammin Guys Welcome to my Basement-episode 38
Welcomne to my Basement the Jus Jammin Guys – episode 38 The Jus Jammin Guys from the Welcome to My Basement Facebook page record in the Howard City area. “Jus Jammin” is a term that’s often used to describe a musical jam session. The “Welcome to my Basement Jus Jammin” Facebook page is a page for about “The Jus Jammin Guys” that are music lovers that share their love of music and connecting with others who enjoy classic rock and blues.. The page includes a number of videos performed in the founder, Duane Weed’s basement. The Jus Jammin Guy perform music they grew up to, music that has influenced their lives and musical taste. The guys all grew up with rock and roll music from the 1960’s, 70s and 80’s. Back when rock and roll was a cultural phenomenon that gave rise to some of the most iconic and influential musicians of all time. Many people who grew up during this era claim rock and roll music as their own, as it represented a rebellious spirit and a sense of freedom that defined the counterculture of the time. From the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin and CCR, these bands pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in popular music, and their music reflected the social and political changes of the era. Today that music continues to inspire and influence new generations of musicians and people all over the world. The West Michigan music scene is a vibrant and diverse community that encompasses a wide range of genres and styles. From indie rock and folk to hip-hop and electronic music, there is a wealth of talent and creativity to be found in this region. Duane and The Jus Jammin guys enjoy sharing their music from the Welcome to My Basement facebook page. Using social media to share with friends, family and people that enjoy the classic rock and blues the guys perform. The Howard City and Montcalm County music scene is a small but tight-knit community that is passionate about live music and local talent. While the scene is not as large or well-known as other music scenes in Michigan, it has a dedicated group of musicians, fans, and venues that work together to create a supportive and collaborative environment. From open mic nights at local bars to community festivals and concerts, there are plenty of opportunities for musicians to perform and connect with audiences. The scene also benefits from the natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities in Montcalm County, which provide a unique backdrop for live music events. The Jus Jammin guys record most of their videos in a Howard City basement, Duane’s basement to be exact. Duane, a producer/director and owner of DW Video, captures the videos with three to six cameras. Captures 12 tracks of audio that is then mixed down and added to the multi camera edit. The band consists of: Mike Nulph is the bass player, Bill VanOss is on guitar along with Dan Salas on guitar and keyboards and Duane on drums. Danny also does the mix down of all the tracks at Vida Recording Studio. The power of music today remains as strong as ever, with its ability to inspire, uplift, and bring people together in a way that few other things can. Follow the Jus Jammin Guys at https://www.facebook.com/WelcomeToMyBasementJusJammin to watch all their videos that pay tribute to the many people and groups that have inspired them. A Conversation about Discover Montcalm episode 33
A Conversation about Montcalm County episode 33 Welcome to the Discover Montcalm Podcast where we’re going to take a look at the communities, the businesses, the attractions and the people that make up Montcalm County. Host and Producer Duane Weed wants to bring you up to date on exactly what we’re doing and why we’re doing the Discover Montcalm Podcast. The goal is to tell your story, that story can be the history of a community, local business and organizations and interesting people that make up the county. The purpose is to get to know the people behind the sign, you have a sign on your building, a sign in your window, but what about the person that’s running the business. The podcast is a dive into the people that work at the business, what they have to offer, and what services/products are being offered. Duane likes to say, “it is a conversation not an interrogation”. Before the podcast, Duane will have an email conversation going over a handful of your frequently asked questions. This way Duane can lead the conversation and at the same time making sure that we’re covering your story and brand, in the right way. Don’t be surprised, Duane also filters in some other questions that are more impromptu. The goal is to have the people on the west side of the county know what people on the east side of the county are doing. Century 21 Rockgate Jackie Bissonette Howard City episode 32
Century 21 Rockgate broker. Jackie Bissonette, located in Howard City, is our guest on episode 32 Jackie Bissonette grew up in Bay City until her late 20’s when her family moved to Houghton Lake MI. She worked for Consumers Energy at the time in Human Resources and her husband was a chef and running the kitchen of a local restaurant. As her career took off in the HR field, she took advantage of career opportunities and spent the next 21 years in various aspects of HR including employee relations, change management, staffing and recruiting, and coaching managers. During that time Jackie worked for only 2 companies, Consumers Energy for 15 years and Universal Weather and Aviation, a Houston based company for the next 6 years. These job opportunities led to many corporate relocations and when her and her husband finally arrived back in Michigan in 2012, they bought a farm and decided to get into real estate and became a licensed agent. From all of those moves, she had a lot of experience being a buyer and seller so knew what traits to work on as a REALTOR and what traits to avoid. Her HR skills parlayed well with the consultative aspects of real estate so it was a good match for her. From there, she opened Rockgate Real Estate in 2017 and set up an office on M46 in Howard City. That was doing fine and then in November of last year CENTURY 21 contacted her and began exploring franchise opportunities. A great move to offer her agents the training and technology tools they were seeking. About that same time, Jackie acquired a second building in downtown Howard City where the office is now. Located at 220 E Edgerton Street in Howard City CENTURY 21 Rockgate is open 9-5 weekdays, reach out and connect at 1 231-937-1077. Discover Crystal Michigan – episode 21
Discover Crystal Michigan in Montcalm County – episode 21 Discover Crystal Michigan in Montcalm County. The Crystal area has an abundance of lakes and natural resources. Outdoor enthusiasts can participate in watersports, hunting, and snowmobiling. Other activities include roller skating, movies, motocross, and stock car racing. The area also provides unique shops, convenience stores, and dining. SOURCE: https://www.crystalareachamber.org/ Crystal lies on the eastern side of the county and is bounded on the north by Ferris township, on the east by Gratiot county, on the south by Bloomer township and on the west by Evergreen. This township was originally covered by forests of beech and maple timber, and after these were cleared of their trees the fertility of the soil was discovered and that fertile belt which lies in the east part of Bushnell township, and comprises the greater part of Bloomer, extends also into Crystal, reaching to and bounded generally by Fish creek, although the timber to the northland east of this creek was of a mixed variety. This tract, which lies in the basin of Fish creek, as was mentioned above, is the most productive and best-tilled part of the township, and comprises the more wealthy portion of its inhabitants. The township, on the whole, has a great number of good farms and the farming is done on an extensive scale and compares very favorably with any other township in the county. In the month of June, 1852, John Smith and his brother, Humphrey, came to Montcalm county in the employment of A. Rust & Company, who at the time were engaged in the lumber trade in Marine City, and for whom they were looking up pine lands. The brothers traveled through the eastern part of Montcalm county, and coming to the shore of Crystal lake, were delighted with the beautiful sheet of water, and camped and remained here from Saturday until the following Monday. The village of Crystal is situated near the east shore of the lake. The first settlement in this vicinity was made by Enos P. Drake who in the year 1857 built a small dwelling house and saw-mill, the latter on the outlet of Mud lake. Drake built the first mill. The first framed building was the Eagle hotel. The village was laid out by Asa Ward on land owned by Mr. Burtch and Mr. Drake. About Stanton Michigan Nestled between small lakes and public recreation areas in west-central lower Michigan, the city of Stanton offers a small town environment with agricultural roots, a low cost of living and a high quality of life. Conveniently located within an hour drive of more populated areas (Grand Rapids, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Big Rapids) and two major airports (Lansing and Grand Rapids), the city also serves as a gateway to northern lower Michigan via M-66. As the county seat of Montcalm County, Stanton has several county facilities and office buildings within its boundaries, which adds to the vitality of the business community. Its classic downtown hosts parades and an annual festival each year. Source https://stantononline.com/community/about/ History of Stanton Stanton was organized in 1860 when the people of Montcalm County voted to move the county seat here from Greenville, which had been the original county seat since 1840. At that time, the County Board purchased 40 acres (160,000 m2) from Fred Hall of Ionia and named the city “Fred” in his honor. The family of Levi Camburn was the first to settle here and he became its first postmaster on March 10, 1862. The city was renamed for Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton in 1863. Stanton was platted in 1865, incorporated as a village in 1869, and as a city in 1881. The growth and challenges of Reynolds Township – episode 13 Ralph Hauenstein first came to the area after his neighbor in Grand Rapids, Lee Olsen (purchased the knife company changing the name to Olsen Knife). Lee invited Ralph to fish the Tamarack where he caught a 5 pound brown. Deciding to move to the area, Ralph’s father purchased the farm and 80 acres. Later Ralph and his wife moved into the farmhouse while they built the home he now lives in, this was about 1970. During this time he went to school to learn about being an assessor and soon became the supervisor of Reynolds Township. In this interview we cover the biggest challenges at the time, like there was no zoning. A couple businesses that were “dumping junk in here” and we quote. When asked about his biggest accomplishment he goes over how the value of the township grew. From business to community growth the interview that was conducted in 2018 is a wonderful look through Ralphs eyes and wonderful for the Howard City and Panhandle area of Montcalm County. Was involved in the county’s involvement of mental health for the area. Duane asked Ralph to recap and he talks about the growth area he sees that we are in. Growing up Montcalm and the surrounding area episode 12 Going back to the early years my father talked a great deal about his grandfather who came in to Hubbardston Michigan not in Montcalm County but almost. In 1870 with 4 boys and his wife, he would spend the winters working at what they called the Northwoods, Montcalm County. Don does not know for certain where but at the time it was driven by the economy. His Grandfather had a cabin as was beginning a farm and to be productive in the winter time he’d go North, (Montcalm County) and work in the woods. Now bringing it forward quite a few years, as a youngster on the farm we milked 30 cows. We would grow corn, hay and crops that was really surrounding the dairy farm. He had been living and in working with was education during the 1960’s where he taught and then spent time at the American school. In 1970-71 Dr. Burns was contacted by a Dean of students at Montcalm Community College indicating that there might be a position for him at the college, so he came back to the farm and then the process of applying for that position began. Don was very happy with the growth of MCC during his time there. Shortly after becoming President he was part of starting a union that helped with the growth of the college. In the 1990’s they had a growth spurt, in the buildings and staff and built the Dozer building and more updates to the facility. Then built the M-tech building in Greenville. In 2003 Electrolux moved out of Greenville with over 5000 locals jobs were lost. MCC and the community stepped up to offer training for these out of work people. MCC doubled enrollment and meet the needs of what these people needed. Always looking at how can improve, know who is Montcalm County. Rural, Ag County, a place bless with lakes and trees and green. A place with small rural communities. Have wonderful access to healthcare and education. A place where people are able to work, live and compete in a global economy. When Dr. Burns retired in 2009 after serving in that capacity for 25 years, the MCCF renamed the scholarship in his honor. The MCCF Donald C. Born in Trufant Michigan, Margaret’s grandparents sailed from Denmark in 1883, settling in the Gowen, near Trufant. From a young age she loved to teach. Teaching her younger siblings how to read when she was five or six. She graduated valedictorian at 16, received a Reader’s Digest Scholarship which allowed her to attend Central State Teachers College, now called Central Michigan University. “It is not often you can chat with someone almost a century old,” producer and host of Discover Montcalm Duane Weed says. “Library Director Cheryl Smith from the Reynolds Township Library joined me to interview Margaret. I would have loved to have done this interview with my grandparents. This was fun.” When asked what technology she best enjoyed over her lifetime, Margaret responded with, “Having my mom see a refrigerator or washing machine, that would have been nice.” According to a Daily News article, “Margaret’s faith has always been strong. In 1970, she was called upon by a Grand Rapids priest to start what would become Christ the King Catholic Church in Howard City. In 1976, St. Francis de Sales in Morley joined Christ the King and Margaret’s husband, LaMoyne, then in the real estate business, found the property at M-46 and Reed Road, where it is located presently. The Daily News article went on to say that In 2018, for the 150-year celebration of Howard City, she was honored to be the annual Harvest Festival grand marshal. Her granddaughters, Haley and Mary, and son, Alan, rode with her. Gov. Rick Snyder gave her a certificate of special tribute. In part, the governor’s written remarks sum up her life: “Margaret Nielsen Krebs, a long-time resident of Howard City, has been an active community member. As an educator, she has shaped the minds of our state’s children. As a faithful disciple, she helped found the first and only Catholic parish in Howard City. Thank you for your tireless work, and many contributions to Howard City and the State of Michigan.” One thing this interview taught me is that you are never too old to do something new. Margaret became an author when she was 97, ‘100 Years of change’ was written with the help of her oldest daughter Karen Cornell, wife of Rob Cornell The book was written after Margaret’s blessed survival of a serious hospitalization in 2021. The book is a perfect gift for anyone interested in life during the early 1900’s, Margaret Mary (Nielsen) Krebs at age 98 has written a beautiful story about her life growing up in Trufant, Michigan. Raised by hard-working, loving parents on the family farm with her eight siblings and grandpa White. Although her family was losing their farm due to the depression, she worked her way through college and went on to teach for more than 37 years. She even managed to start a catholic church. Her infectious smile and laugh can be felt in the words of this beautiful story about family, change, determination and love. 100 years of history 100 Years of Change: The Life of Margaret Mary (Nielsen) Krebs Paperback – March 31, 2022 by Margaret Mary Krebs (Author), Karen Cornell (Author) You may find her book in the libraries of Howard City, Cedar Springs and Lakeview.
