Decorating beautifully is a lot easier if you have a few essentials on hand. This way you can whip up a vignette in a few minutes, transform a room with pops of color & texture or add seasonal touches without it taking hours & involving lugging bins. Listen in to get our thoughts on creating your own decor arsenal. Here is a list of items we think you should have on hand to make your home a place of beauty without much effort. You do not need closets or bins full of decorative items. Just a few wisely chosen versatile decor pieces will do the trick. Throws add texture & color for not too much of an investment. Use different weight for the various seasons. Think how vibrant plaid throw would change a room for the holidays or a neutral linen throw for hot summer days. Have two or three throws in your closet and change them up. Candles - Kelly's mom swears by these & so does Yvonne Luminara Flameless Candles. Plate hangers - have them on hand for when the mood strikes you! Adhesive Plate Hangers. Runners not table cloths for added texture and to ground your table decor. Vases of different sizes & heights. White pitchers - they go it solo and are perfect to hold kitchen essentials and of course, flowers. Depending on the design they go with every look from country to urban chic. White Pitcher. If you are getting ready to tackle a room renovation, then sit down. We have some things we need to tell you. Firstly make sure your spouse is on board with any project. You want things to go smoothly not only for the project, but also for your relationship. Be sure everyone is on the same page as far as everyone's role in the project, but also the budget and scope of the work. Being organized is critical. We recommend having a binder for each project, full of photos, and maybe tile or wallpaper samples. Think about how you will communicate the details of the project. Can things be misinterpreted? Do you have a small area in your home that is hard to decorate? Don't worry about it... we have lots of great ideas to live large in a small room! We all have spaces in our homes that are smaller and sometimes these are the most challenging to decorate! What room in your house needs to live larger! Here's the first rule of small space decorating... KEEP IT SIMPLE! Remember to take pictures of your room as you style it. Pictures don't lie! If you have a small bedroom think about installing a Murphy bed. You can have all those extra space to live in and pull down your bed when you go to sleep. Think about keeping your walls light and your color palette light. Unifying a room with color is a great way to make a space look larger. Infuse lots of texture into a small room when you use a light color palette. Pull the furniture away from the walls. Just a tad. Doing this will give the illusion of space. Let a room breathe! Don't decorate every space! Be very aware of keeping decor simple. Keep windows very minimally dressed, or even keep window free of fabric. Think about smart storage solutions. In a small room, light becomes important. Pay attention to brightening up your small space with light. Furniture with less visual weight works better in a small area. Keep your furniture leggy! Things that are skirted might look to heavy in a smaller area. Use your closet wisely. How about taking off the door of your closet and make a bookshelf or a desk. Add things like molding, a high shelf or curtains hung high will help the eye move up. Remember our eyes like to look around a room and if we can draw our eyes up to something in a room our mind's perceive this as "larger". Add a mirror to a small room. Don't add tiny art. Even in a small room, it will get lost. Go bigger. Smaller things may look cluttered. Keep your small space uncluttered! And keep it neat! Think about the "cantaloupe rule" ... don't have anything in your space smaller than a cantaloupe. Pretty good advice! Scale furniture to your room. Larger furniture with less visual weight. We three have white kitchens. Each one is very different from the other, yet there are certain guiding principles when deigning & decorating a white kitchen that we agree on ~ well, for the most part anyway! Top tip - remember white is white is not white... Not all whites are really WHITE, so not all whites look great together. Chose hard surfaces first, tile, countertops, then choose paint. Much easier to find a paint to go with those other choices than the other way around. Warm up a white kitchen with wood tones. Too much stark white can read sterile in a bad way. Sterile stuff in kicthen is nice, but not sterile in feel. Resist the urge to decorate above the cabinets. If at all possible have cabinets or crown moulding go all the way to the ceiling. Add texture & interest with a planked wall or ceiling like Kelly has done. White is a classic and will always be in style for kitchen design. Have a look at our white kitchens... One of the easiest and prettiest ways to add a pop of organic life to your home is with a plant. And one of the easiest plants to keep alive and thrive is a succulent. So it's only common sense you should try a bit of succulent beauty in your home! You can get both real and faux succulents and they are very inexpensive! They are not cacti. But a broad range of plants that have cells that retain water. So succulents don't need to be watered as often. Succulents do not have spiky spines. Put your leaves on a dish and let the broken end callous a bit. This should take a few days. Then fill the saucer with cacti/succulent potting soil and lay the succulent leaves on top of the soil vertically. DO NOT PLANT THEM IN THE SOIL. Water minimally. In a few weeks, tiny roots will begin to appear and a tiny plant will grow out of the leaf. Then the "mother leaf" will wither and die. Plant the new succulent in cacti/succulent soil and watch it grow! Succulents are fabulous juxtaposed to something more elegant. Think about succulent and silver! Don't let your dishes just sit in your cupboards. Don't you know they are waiting for you to play! Anita, Kelly, and Yvonne say, GET OUT YOUR DISHES AND PLAY!!! We have lots of ways to decorate with dishes. Vintage or new, dishes are made to be seen in every room! HomeGoods is a great source for dishes and especially white dishes and dishware!!!! Vintage shops have BEAUTIFUL, inexpensive china for pennies on the dollar! Make sure you visit your local shops! Yvonne's favorite plates are those on pedestals... white cake pedestals! Oh, be still my heart! You can see some great ways to use cake pedestals HERE Like other decor, dishes look best if grouped in a limited color palette! The more en-mass dishes are the more striking they look! Group or stack like dishes! Platters are a big favorite of ours! Think about using a platter as a tray! What a great look! Glue little metal feet to the bottom of a platter to make a one-of-a-kind tray. Crazing is a naturally occurring process in older dishes. Tiny line appear and actually add to the beauty and patina of dishes. Don't be to show them off! Hang plates and lids etc on the wall. Use hidden hooks. Instead of them being symmetrical on the wall create an asymmetrical design to imitate movement. Yvonne puts her electric toothbrush on a tiny square butter pat plate. Fun idea! Fill bowls and platters and cake stands with seasonal decor! If a piece of art or a hutch is a little too small to fill the space add dishes to the wall on either side. Use vintage cups to use as a scoop or a measure. Many vintage cups actually measure 1 cup. BEA’S SWEET PICKLES 1 quart sliced dill pickles, drained ½ cup tarragon vinegar 2 ¾ cup sugar 2 tablespoons pickling spices Combine sugar and vinegar, let stand at room temp until sugar dissolves, about 4 hours. Put picking spices in a square of muslin. Tie up. Return half of pickles to jar with half of sugar syrup. Add spice bag and remaining syrup. Refrigerate. Let sit for 24 hours before use. BEA’S POTATO SALAD 2 potatoes, peeled , diced, and cooked 3 stalks celery, chopped 2 hard boiled eggs, peeled, and sliced 1/4 cup Bea’s Sweet pickles, chopped 1/4 to 1/2 cup Bea's Sweet Pickle juice 1 to 3 tablespoons yellow mustard Mayonnaise to taste Salt and pepper Let potatoes cool; combine potatoes, celery, egg, and sweet pickles. Creating a timeless kitchen is easier than you think. If you are designing a kitchen, think about the elements that are not trendy. Think of things you can add that have been in style for a long time. I like to use white subway tile, white cabinets, with black, white or gray counter-tops. Marble, white granite, gray quartz or quartzite are all classics. If something looks very '2018' then it's won't be in style for the long haul. Be careful about choosing the counter-tops, appliances, and the cabinet style. Avoid the trendy things, since the trendy things will make your kitchen look dated before you know it. When hanging a trio of pictures and two were the same size and one was smaller how would you hang it. Most people like the smaller picture in the middle of the two larger pictures. And most people love a tri of pictures rather than one small or two together. It's all about the rule of 3. Symmetry is usually most pleasing to the eye. And bigger is usually better! Does your home exude character? Does it have a look all its own? Adding character to your home no matter what style will make your home one in a million! Today let's talk about what we can do to add character to our homes. One way to do add character is to replace the doorknobs and look for vintage ones like crystal. Look for little things to add to your home like a tassel hanging from a doorknob or lamp. Add shutter to the back of your home and replace a solid door with one that has windows. Add the street address to a transom or sidelights of your door. You can have it painted on or use frosted details. I have the letter "P" on one of the sidelights and it's just a frosted decal. No one is the wiser... until now! Molding is a great thing to add to your home to give it a more custom look! Replace hollow inside doors with great solid wood ones. Add ceiling medallions to your chandeliers. Add planking to your walls or ceilings. Walk around your home and make a list of all the little details you could add to add character to your home. If you have wall to wall carpeting on your stairs you might want to think about ripping it out and painting the stairs or if you have good wood underneath the carpet and add a flat pile runner. Add a french chair Add a statement piece to each room. Find a vintage mantel and fake a fireplace. Update your chandeliers. Paint ceilings a different color.
